Detailed description is We are a welcoming congregation! The building of Derby Line’s first church, the Universalist, was started in 1839 and completed in 1840. For about a year preceding the building of this church, service was held in the Scott Tavern and conducted by Rev. Norman Camp from Burlington. In 1871, the building was placed on a stonework foundation. The bell, cast in 1873, was hung shortly thereafter. In 1888, the seven large stained glass windows were installed. Finally, the historic tracker organ, which is still in use today, was placed in the front of our sanctuary in 1892.. . Upon completion of the church edifice, subscribers met and the pews were sold at auction, $1,556 being realized from the sale. Pewholders, who represented several different denominations, then cast votes to see what denominations could supply the pulpit. The Episcopalians, having paid the most for their pews, were given first choice and Rev. Camp remained until 1842. .
