The Lakes Area Community Coalition is a 501c3 that engages all community stakeholders and mobilizes resources to provide wellness and prevention programs, recovery resources and treatment support for the chronic disease of addiction. . . The coalition and its members work closely with the Walled Lake Consolidated School District to provide programming that helps our youth make healthier choices, learn necessary tools for the successful navigation of life and be more resilient in the face of life's challenges. In addition, we provide monthly Families Against Narcotic (FAN) meetings to provide information, education and resources as addiction is a family disease. . . We work collaboratively with the other 17 community coalitions in Oakland County as well as substance abuse prevention professionals, our local business, civic and community leaders to assess, evaluate and implement services and programs to meet the needs of the citizens of Walled Lake, Wolverine Lake, Wixom and Commerce.. . "As a person living in long term recovery, I was inspired by a former AA sponsee who was willing to do anything to keep her daughter, a heroin addict, alive. By joining her on the front lines of this battle, I learned a lot about the disease of addiction (beyond my own alcoholism) and about the stigma that keeps so many people sick.
