Detailed description is The scholarship is awarded annually at the end of year Middleburg High School Band awards concert.
This scholarship is to honor the memory of Ryan Evans Murray who died on February 21, 1993.
Ryan was in the 11th grade at Middleburg High School, and a drummer in the band.
Mr.
John Wilkerson, the band director, contacted Ryan's parents early in 2006, and having never met Ryan, asked if an Outstanding Service Award could be given each year in Ryan's memory.
(On a side note, Ryan's picture has been hanging on the Middleburg High School band room wall since 1993.) Ryan's parents suggested that a scholarship be also given with the award, andafter the Clay County School Board approved, began raising the funds to support the scholarship.
The current band director, Joy Henderson, has enthusiastically continued the Service Award and Scholarship.
As of 2014, over $17,000 has been given out in scholarships.
