About our Program:.
.
The School Psychology Program is a three-year program that prepares students to become school psychologists who work in a variety of school settings.
The first two years of the program involve coursework on campus and practicum experiences in local schools.
The final year of the program is the full-time internship in public or residential schools across the country, depending upon where our students wish to work.
(Our interns have elected to serve their internships across more than 40 states, to date.) The M.A.
in Developmental Psychology is awarded after the first year; the Specialist Degree in School Psychology is awarded at the end of the third year.
.
.
Ours is a three-year Specialist Degree program (not a terminal Masters program).
That is because we are nationally accredited through the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), an organization that does not certify school psychologists at the masters level, only at the specialist level.
Our students typically receive a Masters Degree in Developmental Psychology after the first year of coursework because the second year of our three-year program requires many field-work (school-based) courses that require the masters degree before we can send our students into the schools..
.
.
Develop a subspecialty in working with the Deaf:.
.
The Gallaudet School Psychology Program is fully approved by NASP and recognized by the National Council for the Accreditation in Teacher Education (NCATE).
In addition to providing quality training for the profession of school psychology, our program provides a subspecialization in working with deaf and hard-of-hearing children and their families.
There are many job openings in the field of school psychology, especially for graduates trained in nonverbal assessment which is part of our deafness subspecialization..

.
Questions Frequently Asked: .
.
Do I need to be a psychology major?.
.
If an applicant does not have an undergraduate major in Psychology, then the Admissions Committee will review the transcript for specific psychology coursework, with at least four to five psychology courses.
General Psychology is an adequate start, but the Admissions Committee will look for more advanced coursework in psychology, covering such areas as Developmental Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Adolescent Psychology, Statistics, and the like.
It is very important that a Statistics course be in the applicant background.
(Statistics is generally required of all psychology majors.).
.
Do I need to be proficient in American Sign Language?.
.
Students who enter our program have varying levels of sign proficiency.
Some are totally new to signing (but earned an invitation for admissions due to high ratings across other application criteria), others are native signers or interpreter-level, and many are in between.
Gallaudet offers sign communication courses for students at all levels as well as intensive summer learning opportunities..
.
Do I need to take the GRE?.
.
The program requires GRE scores for admissions.
However, we do not weigh those scores heavily in the admissions process.
We look at other factors such as your essay, your experience working with children, your academic history, and your letters of recommendations.
So yes, the GREs must be taken and scores must be received in order to enroll in the program but low GREs do not automatically disqualify an applicant..
