Our mission is to get as many people on bikes as possible. Bike ownership means access to jobs, better health, less pollution, less crime and happier people. Owning a bike can get you away from an abuser or bad situation, owning a bike can get you to school or a grocery store that was previously too difficult to reach. Bikes empower young and old, male and female and bikes don't care where you came from they just want to help you get where you are going. The best thing we can do for our city and the underserved is to provide bikes and that is our sole purpose. . . Spokes for the city offers a 3 part process for bike ownership. First step to teach the rider how to ride the bike and bike safety. The second step is to learn bike maintenance and the third step is to teach the next rider in the program the first two steps. At graduation the rider gets to pick a bike that has been put together and tuned up by the other riders in the program. . . We will run a small fleet of box trucks to pick up all the bikes in the surrounding suburbs of Washington DC. We will then provide the donors with a tax write off and then bring the bikes back to our warehouse where we sort the working parts from non and start the process of getting those bikes functional for the graduates. We will also teach classes for more advanced bike repair, wheel building, and other custom skills for advanced riders and owners. . . Washington DC is unique in that it is a huge metropolitan area with many miles of wealthily suburbs. Just think of how many bikes are sitting in garages and sheds throughout the DMV that could be repurposed to give someone else a whole new and opportunities. Bikes can change the world and we want to help. . . Ward 7&8 in DC are particularly challenged with crime, teenage pregnancy and generational poverty. By providing an under served area the opportunity to change their life we are changing the world. Bikes mean jobs, empowerment, freedom, exploration and better health. Bikes can also mean freedom from abusers and unhealthy situations. What city in America couldn't use more of that?
