‘A step in the right direction’: Staten Island activists react to Derek Chauvin verdict

Chauvin, 45 and white, was convicted of killing Floyd in an encounter where he pinned his knee on the 46-year-old Black man’s neck for 9 minutes, 29 seconds, as Floyd lay face-down in handcuffs. Floyd had been accused of passing a counterfeit $20 bill at a neighborhood market.
“I am very very happy for George Floyd’s family to finally get that reconciliation, but me, honestly, I am not deeply moved by it,” said Donovan Robinson, 25, of West Brighton, who was a key speaker at some of the largest protests on the borough in 2020. “When you have a video of someone standing on someone’s neck for nine minutes, that is not justice, that is just obvious.
