A Tucson neighborhood was embroiled in chaos and bloodshed Sunday afternoon after a suspected gunman shot two paramedics and then turned his gun on firefighters and neighbors attempting to extinguish a nearby house fire, killing one, before an officer shot him.
"We saw really a nightmare scenario play out with near-simultaneous events at separate but nearby locations. This created a level of chaos that made the situation extremely challenging," Tucson police Chief Chris Magnus said.
Leslie Scarlett, 35,
is accused of opening fire on an ambulance crew around 3:45 p.m. Sunday, Magnus said.
Tucson Fire crews were sent to extinguish a house fire in the 2100 block of East Irene Vista near South Kino Parkway and East 36th Street, while a team of medics were responding to a medical emergency at Quincie Douglas Park for an unrelated medical call, police spokesperson Sgt. Richard Gradillas told The Republic.
