Weve lost a great leader we have lost our fire that we have lost a son. Ever remember him or really are we are in mourning. Yeah i want to ask you about some of the negatives as you call them and many others both inside and outside zimbabwe saw Robert Mugabe as someone who ruled the country with an iron fist was willing to send up desk wads against his political enemies there were accusations of rigging elections and destroying the economy in his efforts to to stay in power at all costs what would you be saying to all of them who you see in that way. Well if you have described if you have to become variables you know youre going to cause a lot of people. So there was competition he opened up the political space obviously initially they wanted to do it to introduce the one state it didnt work out with again you know also the north economic structural adjustment was a wrong concept from the i. M. F. And world bank it destroyed our economy the process but unfortunately obviously with this coming from the war we didnt have enough capital to sustain those economic policies so yeah things work out so we had an unfortunate incident 3 in march a bigger lens which again he described as a very dark day in zimbabwe that matter was resolved and we signed a peace accord in 187. You know we became but we also you know in terms of education is about with one of the eyes this is the lead. In africa more than 90 percent so really in terms of the negatives are you can be a revolutionary and dont. Make everyone happy so there is pressure and possible that process we were under british rule 400 years show you can imagine trying to do certain things trying to undo the. Reform process definitely ruffled a lot of things it made a lot of people in the west especially in britain. Very disappointed that we that moved but lets also understand that it was the british that supported. Provided the. Military. To support. Me from 1800 to 2001 to be precise. Much much. 2001 the british army was training our army and all of these are the negatives they have been right in front of them by they chose to ignore those things serve their country good or the blame on mugabe because theyre way in charge of our military in fact of the training they were a child you know and that youve been there you really are now you did president got the 9094 prime a tongue and thanks very much for being with us. Now Londons High Court has rejected a challenge to Prime MinisterBoris Johnsons planned suspension of parliament sworn this lets go to nadine barber live in london so nadeem presumably the government will be breathing a sigh of relief at this for now thats what has him perhaps only momentarily this court case the high court in london was one of 3 legal challenges going on in the u. K. This week against that purgation against the suspension of parliament for 5 weeks something which could start from next week now Boris Johnson and his government have said that it was business as usual theyre doing it because they need to prepare for queens speech theres nothing unusual about it but the length certainly is longer than normal and all of the claimants its had argued that this was to basically avoid parliamentary scrutiny the ruling in london says that it was in fact legal but theyre planning to appeal similarly a court case in scotland which was rejected on wednesday theres an appeal in that case and theres also another case in belfast in Northern Ireland gina miller the businesswoman who brought this case in london along with former Prime Minister john major says shes still optimistic that they will win. Im not putting becomes ever more chaotic we feel it is absolutely vital that parliament should be sitting. Here therefore please that the judge judges have given us permission to appeal to the Supreme Court which we will be doing and they felt that our case has the merits to be handed out so we are looking to sit on in the Supreme Court and penciled in the 17th of september for the appeal hearing. Now it was the mistrust of so many people in parliament here that Boris Johnson really wanted to take britain outs of the year without a deal on the 31st of october that led to this vote earlier in the week for this legislation to force him to seek an extension and that legislation that bill is now being debated in the house of lords on friday and its expected to finish its run later on friday and if that happens its a crucial step in many peoples opinion in stopping britain in some peoples eyes crushing out without a deal indeed in an indian voice johnson continuing his campaign for a snap election ahead of the brakes a deadline hes pushing for election because parliament will likely prevent him from legally leaving the European Union without a deal so the team what is the british Prime Minister been doing today in terms of trying to sell that in his travels. Well you quite quite right house theres still a lot of talk about how Boris Johnson could trying to take britain out to without a deal at the end of october even with this law he has basically been in pretty election mode he was in the north of england on thursday now hes in scotland hes been at a fish market promising people there to take back control of our waters an echo of the take back control so you can of the Referendum Campaign but it seems that he is losing control certainly of parliament hes not going to majority here and that will be crucial busy on monday because it is expected that hell try again to try to push for an early general election but under the fixed Term Parliament act hell need 2 thirds of the commons to approve that right now the opposition leaders are trying to agree that tactics in a Conference Call but its clear that most of the labor party and the liberal democrats and scottish nationalists really want to avoid johnsons preferred date of the 15th of october because they fear that he could still trying to get that no deal through so many people are saying we need to wait until the deadline for seem to seek an extension then an election in which he would be seen to have failed to do what he promised to do or die to take britain out on that deadline and so i think there is a feeling now that theres an election coming up but its not known exactly when thats going to happen has already been bob and i 1st married in london. So its been a tough week for britains Prime Minister on tuesday m. P. s including 21. 00 of his fellow conservatives seized control of the parliamentary agenda and fast tracked the bill to prevent a no deal breakers it at the end of the month johnson then lost his majority when one of his ministers defected he responded by sacking all 21. 00 rebel m. P. s who voted against him the next day johnson lost a vote on that briggs it delayed bill in the lower house is government also later abandoned efforts to block the bill in the upper house johnson responded by trying to call a snap election he lost that vote too and finally his brother joe resigned on thursday he said he was torn between family loyalty and the National Interest what john Johnson Johnston is a pull up politics supporter of Politics Home he joins us now from london to talk more about this thanks very much for being with us so as we said rough week for Boris Johnson where does he go from here well yes its been an incredibly tough week and as you were saying hes hes really out there just now trying to sell this new general election hes desperate to have this general election by mid october but parliament is just completely out of control for him this has been an absolute horror show of a week its his 1st full week in parliament as Prime Minister hes lost every single vote the m. P. s have seize control of the agenda and push through this new deal legislation and now it looks like hes even going to struggle to get his way it being able to have a general election its an extraordinary position for a Prime Minister to be in. But from labors point of view why why would labor and the rest of the opposition in parliament for that matter agree to an election at this point when the longer this drags out the worse it seems to get for Boris Johnson and his government i mean if you were their political strategist youd be telling them to to to just let this play out as long as possible. Absolutely and i think thats certainly part of their their thinking you know Boris Johnson is having a dreadful time his ministers are not doing particularly well in the commons subject javid Spending Review did not go down particularly well some of his other ministers have had to apologize for gaffes this week as you said his own brother resign from the government announced he was standing down as an m. P. Because he just couldnt stand by and watch what was going on any longer so the opposition are certainly going to try and drag this out for as long as possible. But they also have a difficult case to make they have been calling for a general election for years and now theyre being offered one. Theyre kind of struggling to make the case for why the they wont take the opportunity straight away but essentially it comes down to the opposition not trusting Boris Johnson the shadow chancellor John Mcdonnell said this week that they didnt trust him that no no promise that he made on having an election in october would be sufficient for them and told this extension has been taken they are not going to give him his way and how we. Saw it e. U. Leaders be looking at this because they havent given any indication at this point that they will be willing to to to budge on any of the the key issues like the the irish backstop regardless of what happens if there is an election and johnson stays as Prime Minister and is able to strengthen his hand. Well i think they theyve kind of admitted that the talks arent really going anywhere at the moment that theyre paralyzed they have repeatedly said that theyre willing to look at any new proposal on the irish border issue which has been the kind of main contention of the whole brets in the go see a ship but multiple e. U. Sources have said that the british of have not come up with anything new as not been any new concrete proposals put forward so i think at the moment theyre just going to have to sit back and wait and see what happens with all of this kind of turmoil in westminster i think rightly that they believe that its best for them to stay out of the way and unless it play out and see what theyre left with good to speak we appreciate your insights on this John Johnston thanks for being with us our Hurrican Dorian is still battering the east coast of the United States after causing destruction across the bahamas at least 4 people have been killed in the United States and 200000. 00 homes are without power storm is now a category one hurricane but coastal areas of North Carolina and virginia remain on alert as it moves north by far the greatest impact has been in the bahamas where at least 30 people are confirmed dead and the bahamian Prime Minister has called the devastation a historic tragedy these are satellite images taken before and after dorian made landfall they give you some idea of the scale of the destruction in the island nation at least 30 people confirmed dead as we said but that number is rising as rescue workers recover more bodies nearly half the homes on the worst hit islands of abaco and grand bahama are either destroyed or severely damaged my mother up alone has more from marsh harbor on the island of arbuckle. Its Early Morning in the bahamian island of abaco and esther is sifting through whats left of her home. In the same house you slipped in for the last 56 years. Oh my but you know the get back. And it was more than how. You quoted. The woman. Down the road at a nearby airstrip a chaotic scene is playing out everywhere and everything stopped and the never possibly about this go back up the 1st airplanes have arrived to evacuate survivors of hurricane doreen t. R. E. Nubile is here with her children but there are hundreds of others trying to evacuate and there simply arent enough planes its a disaster a lot of people dont live. Thats passed away a lot of bodies its ridiculous no have no homes theres no shelter and its really really bad here. Driving down the road toward marsh harbor it becomes clear why so many people are fleeing this region of the bahamas was the worst hit by the storm. This is about as bad as hurricane damage gets as you can see the scene here in marsh harbor is nightmarish there is debris everywhere there are boats in front of peoples driveways the floodwaters have not receded yet and for thousands of residents weve lost their homes here that nightmare is far from over. For many of the injured and displaced one of the only places to go is this hospital the only Health Facility left standing after the storm its just. This i dont know what to think of. Any minute they even check it they would take all get from here. And they give you know hope for you know theres no hope for. Him if. Its the but. It could be months before life returns to normal on abaco. Some of those who have managed to evacuate may never return in the meantime there are still hundreds of others waiting for their turn to get out. Marsh harbor of the bahamas. All right in a few moments well have the weather with Kevin Carlisle but still ahead on i just. And new cabinet for sudan including an historic 1st as a woman takes charge of the foreign ministry. And the world cup hosts show why theyre one of the strongest teams in asia thats coming up in sports with joe. With dorian in the atlantic we want to update you on what is happening here in the western pacific as well we have 2 storms to talk about one is the typhoon that is making its way towards the north this is typhoon lingling we also have tried to be Tropical Storm force site over here well get to that in just a moment because its no other the picture completely but with ling ling winds up to 203 Kilometers Per Hour gusts used to 250 now the storm has actually weekend this is equivalent to a category 3 storm it is moving quite quickly its moving to the north at 20 Kilometers Per Hour now that is one of the things that is actually a benefit to the area because were not going to see as much rain falling across much of this region as we go towards tomorrow the storm is going to be entering into the yellow sea and with that were going to be staying a lot of storm surge across parts of the Korean Peninsula as well as over here towards parts of china thats going to cause a problem of course with storm surge rip currents across much of that area it is going to be weakening and as we go towards sunday notice how quickly it makes its way towards the north it will be up here towards parts of china now far side down here towards the south that is making its way towards japan as we go towards the end of the weekend and by monday we could be seeing that skirt parts of tokyo as well as sendai will bring you an update on that as we go towards the weekend as well. Hello again youre watching and is it a reminder of our top stories this hour the former president of zimbabwe Robert Mugabe has died aged 95 hed been in poor health in a single poor hospital gobby was the lead the country for 37 years before being deposed in a military coup in 2017. Londons high court has rejected a challenge to Prime Minister baraks johnsons plan suspension of the u. K. Parliament woman comes as johnson continues his campaign for snap election before the oktober 31st deadline. Dorian is still battering the east coast of the united. States at least 4 people have died and 200000 homes are without power the biggest impact has been in the bahamas where least 30 people have died. Our train station has been closed in hong kong as hundreds of protesters gather there theyre demanding the release of Security Camera footage of a violent confrontation between police and protesters at the Prince Edward station last weekend our Police Officers were accused of using Excessive Force against the protesters if you go to holland joins us live now from hong kong 3 so give you what more are we hearing on the protests thats happening out. Thats right had some that protests started when a young lady knelt in front of the Railway Staff begging them to release the c. C. T. V. Footage from that night of all this the 31st the police had not allowed journalists into the station so the only footage that is there is on verified mobile phone footage she was soon joined by other protesters and then community commuters so it ended up being a sit in with hundreds of people there but they soon have now left the station after they heard that police were coming in that incident has raised the ire of not just the protesters but people across hong kong its waste a lot of antigovernment protest antigovernment sentiment because it basically showed that the police were disregarding protocol and also disregarding not just the protesters but the average person so later this evening were going to see another protest in the heart of hong kongs Financial Center where people across the spectrum are expected to gather to once again call on an investigation into the use of Excessive Force by police and Police Brutality not like to know that that is an authorized protest there is her mission for that protest to take place so that it is expected to be large and many people are expected to join not just your regular protesters but the general hong kong public after they finish work later this friday evening and we know china has been warning that the end could be coming for hong kongs protesters what also theyve been saying. Thats right has a man you know the highest rank ill ranking chinese official has now spoken on the situation in hong kong primarily look at chan hes the 2nd highest ranked chinese leader he was speaking after angle america expressed concern during a press conference hes on a visit to beijing she had also called on the Chinese Government to safeguard hong kongs freedoms the right hong kong residents rights and to end the protests peacefully and heres what he said in response. To the Chinese Government unswervingly safeguards one country 2 systems and hong kong people govern hong kong people and strongly supports it and supports the government to in the violence and chaos in accordance with the law to return to order which is to safeguard hong kongs long term prosperity and stability the world needs to believe that the Chinese People have the ability and wisdom to handle their own messes well. Now there has been much International Focus on the hong kong protests but not just with governments around the world commenting on it so a primary look at chan was also very quick to point out that hong kongs affairs are chinas internal affairs all right david apart on live forests from hong kong now nigerians in south africa are being offered free flights home thats after a violent anti immigrant riots in johannesburg this week the flights would be on the privately owned Nigerian Airline piece tens of thousands of nigerians live in south africa for more and this is live for us in the nigerian capital abuja so i mean has anyone taken up this offer for a patch ration of nigerians from south africa or not and why. Well basically as im no information yet regarding how many nigerians of taken up that offer initially there was confusion regarding the status of the Nigerian Commission in south africa as to whether or not that embassy has been shut down because there were reports that the ambassador there has been recalled to nigeria waits turned out to be not the case the ambassador kind of lead the high commissioner in john is back right now so its not clear how many nigerians of approach the embassy for this flight and i think my feeling tells me that only very few may take up this offer despite the situation there because many nigerians who are there who own businesses there may not just shut up shop and come back home immediately they were a lot of them were hoping that this could get resolved amicably thats the situation right now but it will become clearer later before the end of the day if we see the 1st flight coming into nigeria from south africa as im and of course this is part of a i think a diplomatic spat that has been going on right now between nigeria and south africa whats happening with that. Well basically the president has sent a special envoy yesterday to meet with the South African president and senior government officials alongside the commissioner in south africa so theres so much at stake here as them trade between the 2 countries is estimated at over 60000000000. 00 u. S. Dollars there are an estimated 24260000 living or working or studying in south africa and it is still clear how many South Africans live and work in nigeria but they have lots of businesses most of the most profitable african businesses in nigeria actually owned by south africa or linked to south africa so theres so much just stake here for both countries by the way of course also stepped into the of the discussion saying that the tension and the violence the retaliation all these arches could affect better Regional Cooperation better regional integration remember the whole of africa is trying to unite and the one trading block of the africa Free Trade Agreement now the 2 biggest economies if anything goes wrong between the 2 biggest economies that agreement could suffer and that could affect we were talking about 3 to 400000000 people in the african continent how many tourists in a budget thank you. Sudan has its 1st female foreign minister a smile is among 4 women included in the cabinet thats separate from the Sovereign Council that will lead the country until elections within 3 years have a morgan reports from the 2. After days of deliberation by the countrys Prime Minister the names of members for sudans 1st cabinet of ministers appointed since the ousting of longtime president already bashir were announced the tradition you know suddenly that idea. 2 summers and we start today and you face for a country of free manage well it will pave the way for us to build a sudan that we are all proud of the 1st priority of the Transitional Government will be ending conflict and this decree confirms the appointment of ministers for the transitional period sort of through the cabinet made up of 20 members include sudans 1st female foreign minister along with 3 other female ministers. The Prime Minister said it was a recognition for the role of women in the revolution which started in december with antigovernment protests and led to the overthrow of bashir by the military april he also said that 2 seats in the cabinets will be filled in the coming days with further consultations needed to ensure representation of every region in the country the cabinet and bill by sudans Prime Minister will ask for the transitional agreement implemented the vision of the protesters those include justice and accountability for the alleged crimes committed by for sure the government since it came to power in 1989 theyre also calling for peace in the conflict zones in the country but implementing these changes may come with some challenges. Sudans revolutionary front a coalition of armed groups and a part of the forces of freedom and change coalition that signed the power sharing agreement in august had previously expressed reservations over the agreement it says the deal signed needs to address the core issues of the conflicts and the impact of war but i didnt hear what. We need refugees to be able to return home and we need them to be compensated we want to rebuild sudan and restructure its economy and the issue of bringing places along one will take effect from all the countries including the international community. And hours before the announcement protesters took to the streets once again. Hundreds demonstrated in front of the countrys High Judiciary Court urging on an independent judiciary during the transitional period to ensure their demands during the 8 month protests are not forgotten for a little but are not mean about your part of it was you know today we came out demanding an independent judiciary to represent us and were anyone who turns to that can get their rights not like the former regime where your rights were oppressed and the judicial system was bribed and politicized. Had to tag it today were demanding justice fairness for those whove been killed weve got in the civilian government some people gave their lives for it to happen that shouldnt have been the cause so those who are responsible for crimes must be trite thats what i want from the Transitional Government. The government says its working to build a new future after 30 years of rule under the former regime and present sudan in a new light protesters are not about to forget what it took to bring about that change people morgan on to 0 but its owner. Well as ever mentioned their women are being praised for their role in bringing down on what to bashir and now theyre demanding a bigger role in sudans future how many dollars that. Is a filmmaker and activist. Thats the name given to female protesters who led rallies and faced tear gas and live bullets to bring down the form. Of the she. She was arrested in january and spent 39 days in jail along with 50 other females she is unhappy with the limited role of women in the political power sharing deal thats been agreed to. Womens contribution in the evolution was no less than 70 percent but when we came to forming the councils we got a very weak representation the f. F. C. Documents stipulated 40 percent of seats for women but if we look at nominations weve got less than 10 percent thats why weve started a campaign to demand an equal share women say that considering their Important Role in the revolution they deserve more than what theyve been offered. Out of the 11 Supreme Council seats they got to and in the 20 member cabinet only 4 female ministers have been appointed as i dont know who that is one of sudans most outspoken feminists she says women abilities are undermining going to head up into question. The purpose is to crush women selfesteem by saying theyre not qualified or cant even qualify for these positions the male culture organizes the world according to a binary order in which men enjoy the best qualities such as wisdom ability well even women with a lower category of values such as emotions stupidity or also wily ness for that matter. One of the main writers of the new constitution of the document disagrees with ned. Use it to empower women rather than. Places. They say they dont need but they say they are ready to. Just give them the positions. So you think theyre not qualified. And it is also our duty to. Ready addressing a mostly male crowd now he said but after a long history of exclusion its time to give women a chance in public office. They speak to us about qualifications but look at this 60 years of rule since independence its been a heap of failures linking qualification to james as an excuse they used to exclude women and it has no basis sudanese women have been graduating from medical colleges since 951 is it logical nobleman is qualified to take up the job of minister of health for instance. As these debates go on so then these women are starting to break new ground for the 1st time since independence a woman is appointed our stock diplomat but didnt other women rights campaigners say needs to be done.
