I come to speak to him about the work hes foundation does around the world, his philosophy and approach to life and how things have changed since hes become a father. How is your life changed and says, well yeah, says, but i mean now moving to house and i have a daughter. And my girlfriend and the film is now my wife been all the way it hasnt changed that much in that. And so basically finding full time and still trying to do the same things. You know, i mean in general, id say life is a little broader now its a wife and a daughter and, and just more going on. And you also have a foundation that has a lot of work and you sent me a book that sometimes its difficult to think about that more public case because people have someone to talk to you about climbing for the. Im not saying much about what, why do you think is so difficult about that . I think that most people are more curious about the sensational things, the rock climbing the wrist, like the big drama. And nobody wants to talk about Energy Access and in the world. And no energy poverty, exactly like Solar Projects, or even just Environmental Issues in general. You know, i mean, none of us quite as exciting is risk in your life on, id say, well off you said somewhere that you think its really important to live intentionally. And that can mean most Different Things to different people. What do you think it is that distracts people from living intentionally . What are the things that you have to push away in order to prioritize . I mean, thats individual to anyone. You know, what do you care . Most about, but in my case, a lot of that is cutting way. So sidled expectations and things wed like, how are you supposed to dress or look, or what are you supposed to do . And like, are you supposed to move in a certain way . Like how you just live, how we want, because ultimately were almost done as well. Good time on the way. And did you find it quite easy to push away with that stuff or is it something that you constant may have to at some point . Pushed back again. I think for me its always been relatively easy to live intentionally because ive always loved going, climbing more than anything else. If there has been easy to shape my life and service of, of climbing, you know, making whatever to isnt necessary to me prior to, to maximize the amount of time ive spent outside. Finally, i think that the challenge for people to live intentionally is if they dont know what theyre living for, certainly, you know, if you dont know, this is what you want to do most. You know, once i usually get up and seized and because like what, what am i seizing like, what am i doing with my dad . And as a passionate climber, you know, i always know what i would do that they would just either train climb or arrest. I think thats like a really big part of why your story and your journey resonates to so many people youre finding what it is that you want to do. And you then executing that and then pushing himself in that is speak to a lot of people and inspires. And so having explained that, i think is very powerful. I say it is interesting is i think read this a lot more now is apparent because i feel like someone, your parenting is just allowing your child to find the thing that they care about enough to get out of bed and try hard on you know, its like, it seems like a real gift to find that and you know, its been a gift in my life to find that for myself. And now sort of like, well, i hope i can help my daughter find that at some point, find something that shes passion about enough to, to keep her motivated her whole life is great. So the 2018 National Geographic documentary free. So i want to know scott, im introduced by so so im free, started climbing to a huge audience. And when i watched the documentary, i was struck by the amount of preparation and how you planned the finest details of my difficult and inter composites of a coffee time. But when youve done all the climbing, like and past any way, you are doing several days and you have is kind of organized, it requires different skills. I wonder if you could explain a little bit about the balance between the psychological and the physical preparation for these different types of kinds. I had to put a lot of preparation into for his own. Okay. Ive just because the, the objective okay, was so daunting something here that is hard for me. Its big, its intimidating. Its just a lot. But not all kind of executives require that degree of preparation. And then the, the other part of that question about the psychological versus physical preparation. I mean, the sort of interesting because climbing is a physical sport, but free selling a. So mental, i mean basically theres always a little bit of both. And so depending on what your training for what youre trying to do, you know, sometimes the mental side is more important. Something out of the physical side is more important. It really depends on what you have and what youre aspiring towards. They say that no mine is not in the beginning, the documentary you are living it is on. You dont have many attachments to the external world. And by the end of i dont see where you are now. Youll married with a kid, you have a house, you have a foundation that does what all around the world. And i wanted to know if that was something that you intentionally set out to do or if it organic key grew around. You mean, sir . So i sort of the Home Condition years before the phone, pre solo. I mean its over 10 years old now. So, you know, ive already been working on a foundation for me 85 years when, when i 1st saw it all kept. And i always aspired to have a family one day to have, you know, Meaningful Life partner and things like that. You know, i mean, i want to grow old near grandparent or, you know, its always been part of the plan. But ive always wanted to write time and quite a bit as well. And so i, you know, ive been doing things in the right order trying to one of the reasons i think the documentary so popular is because people see it and they see that, you know, very self sufficient and some, sometimes out of necessity with that concerns. Its easier to kind of control your life and what you have going on then instead of in external variables that can affect things. And i think that was like an interesting point in the documentary about how you introduce balancing out and you relationships with the upcoming and, and the world that you care about, say, passion a and then it meets this point with somebody who really cares about you. Once youd see maybe make decisions that you dont want to do, and i think its difficult to balance sort of that stuff. Its scary. Who wrote kind of get a scary thing and relationship. How did you feel about that kind of response to all of that stuff . Because it was something that i think types of people, i think a lot of people see the film and they think that im quite callous. Which we just fair. You know, that im carrying that to that. You know, i should have prioritize the relationship more. And it is totally fair criticism, but i think that when you look at it in the, the Bigger Picture of the heart of my life, it kind of makes sense that is coming objective that ive been working towards for almost 10 years. That i probably would, has that over this relationship, even though its a great relationship, but you know, id only been dating this one for 6 months or a year when we started filming, when i started working on the line. And so even though she seem incredible, and she is incredibly smart when i married and have a family, but you know, youre kind like, well, this lifetime dream, you know, sort of our ways this, but in your relationship. But i think a lot, if you watch the feeling theyre like, wow, like i really like prioritizing the wrong things and its not like, well in the broader context of life, you know, you just have to choose the right things to the right times. Ive, ive told my wife is now and like, im so glad that i freeze out all kept when i did and didnt sit on it for a few more years until we were married and did have kids and didnt have, you know, other obligations in life. Because i think would be much harder to take on a challenge like that. You know, as a father now. Um that was one part of your fix. It particularly shocked me. I want to talk to you about and it was about when he went on a trip to chide to film documentary, portales of navy. And he worried about how seeing the simple facts which id in life made me realize, perhaps for the 1st time how easy my life was compared to those in less privilege societies. That insight would lead me a few years later to read direct. My goal is towards something more other than crime and it took a lot of seeing him, but that was be a pay phony. Can you explain what that tiffany was exactly what it was a letter. I mean, you know, tiffany might be too strong or for wordpress, but uh, i mean, i guess it was the 1st time that i really examined my own life and where i come from and i grew up in suburban california, and everythings pretty easy. You know, im pretty comfortable. You know, just middle class parents. Good education. Everythings, everythings fine. And then go into real shad, which is the middle of nowhere. I mean, we drove for for days without road across open desert, and then you run into communities of people living, you know, as, as they probably have for thousands of years like literally now in the structure. No, no modern trappings and civilizations just like living in the sand. And there we spent several weeks there climbing for assistance on these big samsung towers. And like these kids would come and watch. I mean, there was just a lot about it really just made me appreciate my own, you know, my own circumstances that i never really appreciated and everything just seems normal when you grew up in the suburbs, you know . Yeah, this is how everybody lives and you go to other pressed the wrong, you know, i know this is a lot harder and was that i guess the 1st time you you say it lets you do the things. Is that what lets you wanting to start the 100 foundation . Yeah, that was a big part of me wanting to sort the confirmation. And, you know, mean the direct beginning of the Home Foundation came for a handful of other things. Part of which had to do with my own rising media profile and sort of success. I was sort of uncomfortable. The fact that it was somebody making more than i needed. And theres so many people in the world that have so much less than they need. And i was like, all this not really fair considering, you know, ive sort of falling into a very lucky place, my life doing the thing that i love to do most. And, you know, getting paid for your life goes, thats cool. And what am i talking about something i foundational or the, the facilities you have and, and how different people live. I wonder if you kind of grew up with that, i guess moral awareness or if that was something that you developed through your climbing and the traveling that you did. I think i was maybe a little bit prime. So that kind of moral awareness because my Family Travel thrown on and my grand parents actually travelled quite broadly. So i grew up seeing pictures of my grand already candles and things like that into my god. And as i grew up sort of within appreciation of the broader world around me, then i think seeing it directly with my own eyes, really made us thinking quite a bit more. And yeah, i mean, to me, the sort of issues of basic fairness, you know, its like, and particularly, you know, its a little concerned. But when you see kids abroad serve like its just by the roll. The dice that i was born in, in suburban, california, and some other kid is born in real chad. And its like youre both just kids. Youre both just appear in the world. And like why it is one child, you get to have a really easy life and another just having a very difficult life. Its like theres no real fairness in that. And part of certain foundation was just my attempted grappling with that inherent in fairness and in the human situation. And its quite interesting because climbing and itself can be quite a solid tree thing to do. Its a nature, its all around lots and lots of people. So i find it interesting that you still manage to meet and interact with people watched you whats happening and the fact that what you do and what can do so coming coming, seems like its sort of a solitary is for an way, especially for sewing, but actually i think that climbing interacts probably more than almost any of us for you interact with normal people. Were normal places because the thing about timing is you have to go to the rocks and rocks are typically in the most rural and far flung places on earth. And then you stay there for quite a long time while you work on climbing projects. So you also want to be living in Rural Communities for weeks of a time. And youre there to climb and youre doing these difficult climate objectives every day. Then you also see the kids just growing up in his village. You have partnered with the project, memphis rocks. So thats been around since 2018 that is in memphis. And it combines timing with one of the other passions which is sort of the pallet. And i wanted to know why you got involved in that project specifically and how it works. I mean, members are, so is a good example of what im trying to do to the foundation which is helps to help people in a way its good for the environment. And so with this arrives, i mean, im sorry, this is taking very time and jim, but its really a community have between your organization. Its like a, it does everything is a 3 bags of clothing, bank it, it helps their local community in any way that people require. And then donald sedation put solar on the roof and base just saves them their utility bill. And thats just more money. They can put directly into the programs that help their local community. And to me thats, thats the sort of clear when, when were like, oh, you can help department as a grade, you know, kind of help the environment in a general sense. But mostly it helps this local community in a very specific way. And you know, i love when, when projects like that is there, like, i dont want to see numbers, right . Spending a bunch of money sending money to their living utility is like the utility is doing just fine, you know, like they dont, its, i dont need it, like nobody cares about. I mean, the members, utility in general is pretty regressive and theyre really not doing anyone any favors like, you know, i was like, screw them. Yeah. I found that project very, very fascinating. Did you go, do you find that you have much time to go and visit these projects and i know in relationship with them ongoing because theyre in general, i try not to visit all the projects that were funding. I mean, at this point weve, we funded dozens of projects around the world. And if i was trying to visit each one, thats basically just sort of a weird, touristy thing. I mean, the thing is were, were supporting senior organizations around the world and were trusting our partners to do whats best for their community in a way that anyway, its good for the environment. I have sort of misgivings to any kind of uh, philanthropies. Its based on like me going to watch. Sure thing happens to be like, and i dont need to see it. You know, its, its nice to occasionally contribute to, to projects. And i, you know, volunteer to, to few things and like actually try to help and, and occasionally you, you visit to make a film or do something where you can highlight the work that theyve done. But in general, i think the, the guiding principle with autonation is always been seeing the project my getting the projects done, like as long as that work is actually happening. And i know they are very passionate about the my at impacts school in guatemala. I could you explain a little bit of to me about what thats about. Yeah, so the associates are maya runs as girlfriends, asians girls in guatemala. And its one of my favorite projects, just because its such a clear win win sort of situation where uh, the whole nation helped finance solar panels on the school. It saves them Something Like 10000. 00 a year, which in enroll guatemala, like god, is you know, probably another teaching position or whatever else and, and basically its more money going into teaching and it is girls, which to me is, is the perfect situation. Theyre also doing educational competitor on the way the girls learn about the panels and they do whole educational things. But the important thing for me is that the school has more money to educate kids. Thats, you know, its like why waste money paying utility or whatever else, when you couldnt be putting it into the project that youre there for, which is educating children. Where was it that this particular focus was sort of energy came from for year. Was it something youve always cared about . Was it something that you looked into about to some specific moment or i just wanted this for environmental projects that improves standard of living is sort of helped humans. Because i learned one thing. Direct visions was that nobody cares about the environment if their basic needs are met. And so, you know, i care deeply about the environment. I care about Climate Change. You know, im worried about some of our, our global future. But i realize that theyre literally billions of people on earth, the dont care about that kind of thing because theyre too busy meeting basic needs. And thats totally understandable. But i felt like theres no real point in protecting the environment in a broad sense. If youre not also helping humans meet their needs, because, you know, mean someone will cut down the last 300. So that means boiling water for their family. You know, its like if they need fuel like theyll take it where they need it. And so, you know, it felt like if youre trying to protect the environment, it starts by helping make sure that people have everything they need. So thats kind of where the homepage and started. And we just want it consistently funding Solar Projects on the world because solar, so often in an elegant win win solution where people can meet their energy needs while doing so in, in, uh, environmentally, you know, relatively friendly way. Its like kind of the best option in most places. And so over the years weve just double down on spring Solar Projects on the run. I think about this quite as somebody said that theres a reason why that chinese mountain is so long and the space of the top is so small. When you achieve that peak, like you did, when you a free site at a copy time, you have a platform. I wonder if having that platform changes your viewpoint from before in terms of what the legacy is. Yeah, were, so i, she started the conversation years before i should have anything super meaningful and support kind of knowing that if i was ever going to do anything big or mainstream, like if, you know, i kind of knew that i knew that i wouldnt do something useful in the world and so i went and started the operation. But i also knew that if i started it sort of a little bit early anyway, you know, like before, i was fully ready for it. That it would kind of naturally grow with me. And that when the time came, it would be able to really blossom on its own. And thats really worked out exactly how, how it helped. Because now were 10 or 11 years into the worst. And weve been doing this due to the foundation. And certainly the last 2 years, its really been taken off where were supporting dozens of projects on the world. We do have over 2000000 in grants last year. If it is small scale organizations, basically were just giving so much more than i ever thought was possible. And yet in the grand scheme of global philanthropy and, and certainly in global finance, like thats nothing you know and, and barely even touches the part of the problem is that we face, you know, theres a lot of money going to large scale converts land to be here you have Something Like the phases earth fund, you know, putting like a 1000000000. 00 in a climate. But most thats going to like, big better technology, sort of things like direct carpet capture from the air and, and sort of like a next generation stage. And you know, thinking that theyve gone to the Gates Foundation and theres certainly a place for that kind of stuff in the world. I mean, like, its great that people are looking at the solutions for the future. For when you think how much you need there is on earth right now and how, how easy it is to, to meet those needs. You know, its like some of the projects that were funding. Its like a 50000. 00 check to something in your organization. And it can totally transform their way of life, or having light for the 1st time, have any refrigeration for the 1st time in some rural community. That goes there. A transformative to, to humans live and kind of like, it just seems morally and i would say more of the questionable because, you know, i mean, finding any kind of kind of plan for him. Like, yeah, thats great. But its like when theres that much mean its on that in the world. I feel like you should start there. Obviously a inequality and the Climate Crisis matches a lot to you. That how to you prioritize. What is that like . How it, where does that come from for you . Is it just something that you see and you then, through mazing people and talking to them . Is there any philosophy that you feel like you can provide to me ever at a fair number of books about things like this over the years . But i think ultimately it is. Comes down to me doing what i feel comfortable with what you know, what allows me to sleep all every night and i do sleeve all the time. But so, so i personally cuz im always tired from accident. But um, but i mean, i dont need roughly a 3rd of my income every year to do the information, to environmental projects around the world. And to me that feels like an appropriate start. And, you know, i, i wont even be surprised by start giving more than that in the future. Just uh, but you know, for now my god, i dont know how to buy a house and have a family and sport my child and stuff. But at some point, you know, those obligations will be, will be met hard, my personal obligations to family and my community will not necessarily you know, then you just give the rest of the its fascinating to hear that coming from outside of the United States. I mean, im from the okay, and we have people buy things they dont need and can seem things i dont need. But its interesting to hear me talking about that being in america and will say living on that from so my life, my face active. So im sure the capital the world. Uh, yeah, i feel like, you know, that sort of vacuous consumption like people to advise they dont need, you know, friends like looking for something that they care about. You know, theyre trying to buy things to fill a whole or to, to make them feel better and have whatever, you know, and sort of lucky enough that the, i dont need to fill those all the like a time and all the time. Like i, i know what i love to do i, i love when i do, im happy with what im doing. I dont need to buy random stuff, but i dont need, i will say actually i think if were really going deep on this, at a fundamental level, i come from, from the world view sort of abundance. Like i think that theres more than enough for everybody to go around. Its more about equity, we distributing what we have, like, we dont need to to make more things like, theres so much, you know, so we just need a few or maybe odds and things like that. We did say at the beginning that people often ask you about that because of the risks of for example, for you started out and specifically um, but i wanted to ask you about it and saw different way. Because when youve done all the work that youve done and you are invested in something which has, i guess a legacy and you have a daughter as well. I want to know what it is that you really want to be 9 for leaving a high end. At this point in your life, i mean im, you know, im pretty proud of the comment that ive done because i put a ton of work into it and, and as of it is pretty cool, you know, i guess its, its hard. That said, i wouldnt be surprised if, when im older, im more proud of, you know, i family or the work that ive done to my foundation or who knows what else i might even started in the next 15 years of my life. You know that, i mean, im always gonna be proud of the things that ive done as a rock climber, but, but im definitely open to the fact that, that other things in my life were probably surpassing. And i do want to kind of in specifically talking about your thoughts and how that has changed or prospective they can get things like the Climate Crisis in the future. Do you think that having a child yourself has impacted on . I guess that important that you see in protecting the law that we live in so that you can also. And so its actually, i mean is a, its a natural question that i guess why like do i care more about the environment . Because i have a daughter now, and the answer is basically now, because the reality is, my daughter is gonna grow up relatively comfortable her whole life regardless. You know, mean that the worst effects of Climate Change are felt by the lease privilege. Keep honors, you know, its like that basically the, the domain are 2000000000, chorused deep honors are the ones who are most affected by changing climate. And so, you know, my daughter is gonna grow up in air conditioning. I, shes, shes fine, either way. And that, you know, really, that sort of highlights the unfairness of it all. You know, for most of us, our kids are going to be just fine. You know, is like there be higher c was around some of the major metropolitan areas there would be like, you know, different pumping systems. Itd be like, like for most of the adult world, well adapt as we go. But its really in the developing world that the people are gonna be the most personally affected by changing climate. And thats, you know, i mean, most of the same sort of issues of unfairness that, that helped me start on nation 10 years ago. Thank you for coming and speaking to me about these things today.
