A dangerous gap bell is the next act in a drama already five years old the conclusion has never been less certain. A no vote will write history. Our people with him move on within a europe of democracy and solidarity. The leftwing Prime Minister believes a no vote will strengthen greeces hand in future negotiations, a National Mandate to demand more for less. A yes vote then would in effect be a no to him and his party. Actually, many people are voting yes are voting against current government. Its definitely yes to continue with the members of europe. The yes and the no camps is not just a strength to defend positions, but they illustrate a division in greek society, one being driven much deeper this week between the largely middle class voters of the yes camp willing to sign this country up to more austerity measures to defend what theyve got and many of these here, workers with no jobs with little or nothing left to lose. A no vote for the workers and for the young people in greece says that we have to stop all the negotiation with the European Union. We have a take our lives back and fight for our jobs and democrats. We are not enemies with the other party of the yes. I have friends who belong to yes. Tomorrow, they will also they will still be my friends. One of the newspapers that had an english headline today in athens described the situation as chaos. That might be a little much. I dont see chaos but i do see and according to the poll, it is going to be a very close vote. If this rally is any indication, the Prime Minister and his supporters are going to work hard to turn out no volts. Thats John Siegenthaler from athens. Our European Countries watching. It seeks to explore the issues raised by one of europes dominant ideologies. While the museums overall theme seems leftwing capitalism is what is making people suffering. This is what connects the museum to the crisis. When the sickle currency was created, it was meant to bring europe together. As a common eastyearold, so they would benefit from being part of one zone with one Interest Rate and one economic policy. In some countries notably germany, it has brought prosperity. Greater competitiveness has often given german firms the edge over german counterparts, but those shared policies have brought problems in Southern Europe as one by one countries have needed to be bailed out by the e. U. Institutions. In germany opinion is divided about whether the policies of the euro zone are to blame. The euro was a good decision. What the greeks now make of it is a different matter that could be problematic but i would always support a common currency. It was a bad idea. The german marc would have been better. Through europe, we finance all poor countries. The German Government repeatedly stressed its commitment to solidarity across europe and that if the euro fails, europe fails. One leading member of the ruling party said the euro zone could survive. The Economic Contribution of grace to the euro zone is 2 , meaning it can live with a weight grace. The question remains how will greece remain economically. The situation now cannot continue because there is no prospective for growth. Although sundays referendum will provide a clear view of what voters want from the youre euro zone, the crucial vote may be yet to come and a yes vote here is for from certain. Last Weeks Supreme Court ruling legalizing samesex marriage across the United States has definitely not ended the debate over the issue. All three employees in the county Clerks Office in tennessee resigned, saying the courts ruling conflicts with their religious views. They issue marriage licenses, but dont have to perform the wedding ceremonies. Nearly 5,000 residents evacuated after a derailment of a train are cleared to go back home. The e. P. A. Is testing water air and soil samples near knoxville tennessee. Everything is looking pretty good right now. Noxious fumes sending more than 80 people to the hospital. The cows of texas is still under investigation. Finding a place to live in San Francisco is tough the prices high, the houses scarce. New homes are being built but some of the land where the houses are under construction could be contaminated. We are joined live from Treasure Island in San Francisco bay. What lice beneath . The sights are former naval bases that had radioactive material. No questions the beauty of this coastal property, but some are questioning the plan to build housing here. San franciscos housing prices is so significant that the near completion of just 88 new don doughs is notable. Eventually, plans call for 20,000 units above and along the San Francisco bay. Not everyone is celebrating. So there is a shortage of Affordable Housing in the city. Is this one of the answers . No. No. I can emphatically say no. Marie harrison with the Green Action Group advises against renting or buying here by the former Hunters Point naval shape yard and the same way on Treasure Island. In both places, the navy is cleaning the soil at its former bases. The u. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said war ships used to be decontaminated after testing and used to conduct racation experiments on animals here. I cant see people moving in while this toxic land surrounds them. They are working on cleaning up not just the buildings but the cleanup, digging into the ground lifting up soil, that has anything and everything in it and youre living right on top of it . Living just a football field arm from the Lookout Point of the shipyard, this 4yearold went to the hospital last month. I was coughing. A lot . It didnt stop. Her father said doctors gave her daughter an inhaler when she had trouble breathing. They worry the remaining toxins may be to blame for the little girls lung problems. It may play a strong part of it. This is the last house and its close to the area right there. Its not clear if the shipyard is the source of her illness, but there are high incidents of asthma and heart decease here. Toxic chemicals in the ground can because airborne, the socalled fugitive dust concerns this man. I know what the human outcomes are the babies are sick extremely sick, and that we need to protect them. We need to get the dust out of the air. The Environmental Protection agency would not speak to us on camera. A spokeswoman said the agencies oversight is rigorous and the navys own internal routine Quality Control system functions as it is designed to do. When the navy has found concerns, it has reported them and corrected them. In 2008, a whistle blower reported sloppy work rewarding the way radioactive samples were collected, and this document, an internal memo presented to the division chief at the state department of health shows the state suspended plans for the city to take over 22 buildings from the navy after radioological testing methods were questioned. Across from San Francisco here on Treasure Island, the navy is cleaning up another former military site. Plans call for 8,000 new Housing Units to add to the 700 that are already here. There are signs that indicate a source of radiation is nearby, but just steps away from this cleanup site is a densely populated neighborhood. This woman has lived only street for two years. Does it worry you at all . No. Theyve had meetings and such saying this is safe, near demolishing everything over here anyway. Theyre going to demolish everything and build up the community. It doesnt make you nervous. You dont worry about whatever said in the ground here . Not really, they say its safe. The original environmental plan robert is overseeing the Treasure Island development for the city of San Francisco. He is confident that the clean up crees under the supervision of the state department of Public Health are keeping the toxins contained as they transfer them out of here. How can they control the wind or the tides or anything leaving to other parts of the island . Its about taking measures to mitigate risks and to contain the soil that theyre removing, the soil that theyre removing is the concern and as they excavate that and load it into trucks, they are covering the trucks wetting down the material so it doesnt become airborne and then monitoring around the excavations to make sure that they are providing sufficient water and in high winds, they discontinue their work. He said the island will be a vibrant place when the Navy Completes the transfer of all of the land to the city in seven years. He said plans call for 25 of the residences to be Affordable Housing. Thats more than the double the requirement for new housing probables in San Francisco. Even now, one third of the people who live on Treasure Island were formerly homeless. There are resident she will Addiction Treatment centers here. That concerns tompkins. They are human beings and you are going to expose them to the radioological waste chemical waste, you dont have to worry about lawsuits, because they dont have the money to sue you for damages. Theres a per speaking that its possibly unsafe here but affordable its the only choice people have, so send them to Treasure Island. I dont think thats the case. Again, we work with the permits with the Department Board of Public Health and they dont have an interest in moving people into housing. They have an interest in. Safety and Public Health. If they look at hour facilities and make sure before we rent things out to individuals, that we are providing a safe environment. And yet, one Treasure Island resident we spoke to refuses to drink the water. Robert beck said the leases here tell residents they are not permitted to plant or disturb the soil. If it concerns my doctors health, im going to make sure she is taken care of. The reality is that the housing crunch such that it is in San Francisco he may have few alternate places for his daughter to live right now. The navy expects to end the cleanup at hunters. 6 years from now and said it expects to finish the cleanup on Treasure Island a year after that. Thank you. Pride or prejudice, a sign filled with symbols of the confederacy. The battle over whether that should change. Believes named after people who shared theshared the same philosophy as dylann roof. He believed africanamericans were interior, and he was willing to take the lives of nine citizens because of that ideology including a state senator. On our campus, one of our most iconic buildings is named after a senator who believed that africanamericans were in foror and openly bragged about lynching africanamericans. As a young man Benjamin Tillman oversaw the murder of a black senator, simon cokier. That being said, some of the men who are on our dollar bills and fivedollar bills and every other bill once owned slaves, so when we get on this slippery slope. Some say that the original outrage over the Confederate Flag is leading to hysteria over symbols of the old south. Do they have a point . We have a tradition in this country of honoring the wrong people for the wrong reasons. The legacy of slavery touches every part of the United States, its economy institutions, including the universities. When you read a book like ebony and ivory that becomes crystal clear. We have over 180 schools with buildings that honor confederate leaders. We have to stop this tradition of honoring the wrong people for the wrong reasons. What about o. O. Howard, he was an historic figure for the union side but to the indians was not a hero. Soldiers shot into indian teepees killing women and children, so should howard change its name . I think those are conversations we cant fear. When we honor people like john c. Calhoun or Benjamin Tillman were missing opportunities to honor people who contributed on the right side that history. Harvey grant zornell thurston, being honored now at duke. If were going to name buildings after people, he should honor people whose contribution to justice transcends time. Whats your opinion on the name of historic forts like fort lee, brag and hood. Should they be renamed . We have to look at history in all of its complexity. We dont want to erase the struggle for justice and the fact that there were enemies in the struggle like confederate leaders. We have historical textbooks and museums to do that. When we name buildings and monuments, we are honoring those people and we dont want to honor that legacy. The fact that we had civil war reenactors and some people dress like union soldiers, others like confederate soldiers. Now there are calls for the confederate soldiers not to carry the Confederate Flag. Do you agree . The reenactment is different than the building that houses the school of education. What we have to do is look at his practices of education understanding these complex moments of history are a great opportunity for education. One problem that we have because of the legacy of the united daughters of the confederacy in the south is a fictional kind of history that doesnt really talk about what actually the confederate state said was the reason for secession. We need to understand that. Thanks a lot. Thank you. It was 152 years ago today the battle of gettysburg, the civil war would go on for another two years before the south surrendered. David levine went back to gettysburg where many famous photos were taken. We hear from him tonight. This is photography which gives people the chance to see how places have changed from 150 years ago to today. I came armed with 23 picture that we found that we decided having looked at the images and at the photographs of the areas today that we might have a good chance at achieving the same photographs that were taken 150 years ago during the civil war. The real beauty in these images is seeing the fade from then to now. Particularly if you have people in the pictures that suddenly disappear and youre present with a modern day image it has this ghostly quality to it often. The easiest way to find the precise location is to have a series of reference points at different distances from you. When youre presented with a scene, if you have a building in the near fore ground and way off in the distance, its quite easy to reference those two buildings to each other to work out where you should be in relation to those two buildings. Some of the pictures, theres one at devils den which is a series of boulders. Its quite difficult to use those landmarks as your reference points. Also, some of the landscapes have changed quite a lot. Whether thats the natural landscape or the buildings themselves some have been modified lots over the past 150 years. The civil war era was an amazing time for photography. It was only 2025 years after the birth of photography and the guys that were working at the time were real pioneers in their craft artists and they looked at themselves as artists. When im in the field and trying to get the photograph, i get quite technical about things, actually. I dont get swept away by the emotions of the historical events at the time, but when youre laying images on top of each other it starts to take that kind of impact. You can more of david levins photography at website. Families of those who died in the attack on pearl harbor may get closer because of technology. The men who died at pearl harbor have been honored in many ways over the last 74 years but for the hundreds who died on the uss oklahoma, there remains have been co mingled and buried in unmarked graves like this one. Pressure from the family and new advancements in science may have made it possible for the department of defense to figure out once and for all just who is buried here. On a sunday morning december 7 1941, japanese planes appeared without warning over pearl harbor. Lowell a sailor died among 400 shipmates. This is a Western Union to my father joseph valley, dated december 20, 1941. The Navy Department deeply regrets to in form you that your son is missing following action in the performance of his duty and in the was a of his country. Bob valley said news of his brothers death was the worst pain of his life, but trying to bring the remains home prolonged that torture. The biggest frustration is the navy that fought us all the way and im going to say tell it like it is. To understand the nature of the fight its important to understand how the sailors on the oklahoma died on december 7. The oklahoma sustained nine to 11 torpedo hits. She has literally had her guts slashed out of here and now is turning over and those crews are in their general quarters. Many sailors would have been sleeping in. When the general quarters sounded, they would have raced to their battle stations to try to waterproof the interior of the ship. Once the flooding began, they would have been taking reef final in a water tight compartment. This is the kind of place they were trapped slowly breathing up the oxygen until it finally ran out days later. The bodies of the crew remained underwater for years. When they were finally brought up their remains wound up mixed together in graves in the National Cemetery of the pacific known as the punch bowl. Ray emery survived pearl harbor aboard the uss honolulu. When he discovered the navy could not tell him who i was buried where he began to catalog the lost bodies himself. I got clipboard and paper and started walking day one and anything close to december 7, i spent many a moon up there i went after all navy, everything of world war ii that was buried in that cemetery. If i figure im right i stick with it. I stick with it. Thats my ship. How many casualties they had and where theyre buried. From his house ray managed to take 17 different databases and compile them all. Hes been through thousands of records like these records of the remains and what portions of the skeleton were intact, the dental records used, all of that to try to piece together himself where everyone was buried, who everybody was, and hes the first person to ever didnt ties the cemetery to try to make a workable record out of it. All of that didnt exist before he came along. Emery went headtohead with politicians and the department of defense in letter after letter. We have expended more than enough manpower and hours in researching and responding to your many inquiries, this will be our final response to you rewarding this issue. That was 1999. That was not their final response to you. I wrote back. I started writing even more letters. After 40 years of work, emerys crusade helped convince the department of defense which argued the mixed up graves should be left alone to disband itself existing democratic for handle the dead and create a new lab in hawaii for identifying remains through d. N. A. Still, the crew of the oklahoma will be an enormous challenge. We exhumed one casket in 2003. There were five skulls in that casket, however from d. N. A. Analysis we know that theres over 100 individuals represented in that one casket. We know hes remains are highly co mingled. Researches believe they will identify 80 of the remains over the next five years. Perhaps lowell will be one of them. I can show you emails that im getting back from my contacts that are involved. If it wasnt for you the families excuse me i want to bring him home. I dont want any thank you. I just want the story to be out the true story. I dont care who in the heck dont like it or who gets stepped on. Its worth noting here that there is no fixed time table for this process no deadline that the department of defense has to abide by. For those that were alive tell the of pearl harbor, if theyre waiting for this to happen, they may not still be alive when the process finally comes to a close. Straight ahead the oil spill settlements, several states getting billions from b. P. , but theres a legal twist in the fight for compensation in mexico. What were you thinking about . That just came to you. It wasnt overnight. I thought about it a lot before i sat down and said oh, yeah, heres the melody ive been looking for. You know how you think in your head for a while before you actually convert it to thought. I got to thinking about the album, i just threw it on as an extra. You didnt think it was going to be a hit. But then the success of the song as you know, particularly because war i think molds culture. If you look at the gulf war and then katrina and then the attack on america after this, god bless the u. S. A. Was the song of the year in nashville it mellowed for a while used it to close our show, everybody loved it. I recorded an album all the american songs that i love, that you love, that weve heard and sang and in put u. S. A. On that album, done. Not just republicans embrace this song. I was very specific about that to begin with and that is what the song got hot, i was asked by the Republican Party no the democrats first to use it at a convention in San Francisco and i said no. The republicans called me and said we want to use it at our convention in dallas. I said no. Im a conservative christian ill tell you that, but its not going to be political. But then it was. Once that happened, now im tied to reagan and to the Republican Party, and thats fine. Tell me what its like to be on stage in a stadium and some of these pictures here with you and sick that song, whats the reaction from people . Good night moon, or red dog red dog and we taught them about collars and animals and in sects and life, but no patriotism. I think that maybe one of the problems with our country is why were not unidentified, because we didnt get started when they were little kids and tell them its important to be a patriot to respect your flag and its important to give respect to the military.
