Authorities are investigating the death of Sgt. Jessica Mitchell, found fatally shot on Interstate 10 in San Antonio on New Year's Day.
Firefighters responding to a car crash along the interstate discovered Mitchell's body, WOAI-TV in San Antonio reported, citing police. Joint Base San Antonio released a statement saying Mitchell's death is being investigated by the local police and the Army's Criminal Investigation Division.

The statement said Mitchell, assigned to the U.S. Army Medical Center of Excellence at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston, was pronounced dead at University Hospital San Antonio about 3 a.m. Friday. Mitchell, 30, a dental specialist, was shot multiple times, the medical examiner's office said.
