Hes been speaking to our sports correspondent, joe wilson. Jonny bairstow is a world class cricketer. For england hes essential a rock. A batsman and wicket keeper, just like his father. He played for england too. The link between son and father is unmistakeable. Thats a brilliant catch by bairstow. David bairstow played cricket for yorkshire for 20 years, but he never sanonny grow up. When jonny was eight, he returned one evening with his mother and sister to discover that his father had taken his own life in the family house. Me and my sister were both very, very young. In some ways, yes, you do remember everything that went on because you will remember that. At the same time, there are bits of it that you choose not to remember, that you choose to park. Like i mentioned in the book, there is no need to be angry for many, many years, or anything like that. The comparisons with his father were inevitable once jonny became a cricketer. He only ever imagined a career in sport. Jonny has tried to stop answering questions about why his father took his own life, but its clear as he dealt with retirement, his wifes illness, david struggled with emotional pain he couldnt express. Almost that its not culturally allowed to talk about emotional feelings and depression or whatever it might be. Do you feel thats changed in your world, in your experience as a sportsman, is that culture changed . I think theres a different view on it now, definitely. I think that theres obviously sports psychologists, yeah, doctors now will see different things. But theres still not a single thing that you can say, right, youve got depression because there are so many different aspects of it. Youve got Mental Health issues, anxiety, youve got this, that and the other. You cant say, right, youve got a snotty nose, youve got a cold thats easy. I wonder if reading that book and maybe hearing you talk about it might make somebody think twice about taking their on life . About taking their own life . What do you think about that if that could be a result from your writing this and talking about it . Yeah, i think it potentially could do. Everyones going to react to it in a different way. People have had setbacks from early on in their life, then theres no reason why you cant go on and still succeed. You talk in the book about how, you know, your dad would be proud of you and what youve done in cricket of course he would be. I also reckon hed be proud of you for the way youve talked about this and dealt with it in the book . Yeah. Who knows but. Id hope so and i think hes be very proud of the way becky and i have turned out. Thanks for your time. Thank you.
