Steps with iran. And meet snowball, the dancing cockatoo. His videos were a viral hit but in boston they have got scientists all of a flutter. Hello and welcome. Im Michelle Fleury in new york and Christian Fraser is in london. Theresa may tried hard with donald trump. She invested a great deal of Political Capital setting up his recent state visit, and she persevered with the relationship in spite of his often public criticisms of her brexit strategy. It was all to no end. Today, the president ridiculed her on twitter while doubling down on his criticism of Sir Kim Darroch, her governments representative in washington. The wacky ambassador the uk foisted upon the United States, he tweeted, is not someone we are thrilled with, a very stupid guy. He should speak to his country and Prime Minister may, about their failed brexit negotiation and not be upset with my criticism of how badly it was handled. I told theresa may how to do that deal, but she went her own foolish way, was unable to get it done. A disaster i dont know the ambassador but i have been told he is a pompous fool. Tell him the usa now has the best economy military anywhere in the world, by far. Thank you, mr president. Well heres what white house adviser Kellyanne Conway had to say about his tweets. President is very clear about the comments made by the uk ambassador to the us, and the president also yesterday commented on how brexit should have been many present people accuse the president of meddling but it turns out he was right. Theresa may leaves will leave office in two weeks time. Sir kim darrochs tenure at the British Embassy in washington, is also coming to a close. So the tweets are a headache not for them, but theresa mays successor. Post brexit, what kind of special relationship is this going to be . Jeremy hunt and borisjohnson will go head to head in front of a Live Television audience tonight. And ahead of that debate it would seem they have different views on how they would approach the mercurial donald trump. Here is a tweet from mr hunt. Here is borisjohnsons response. Is he right to criticise the Prime Minister . I myself have said some critical things about brexit negotiation so far. Thats one of the reasons why i am standing tonight. Were joined now from westminster by sir Christopher Meyer who served as uk ambassador to the us and from washington by amanda sloat of the brookings institution. Sir kim has taken sensible decision today to stay out of the way. It was his choice not to go to a meeting with if could trump. If you were him, what would you be doing in the next few weeks while all hopefully blue over . First of all, i would look to august, which is only three weeks away, when washington closes down and people go on holiday. I would hope to get to august in reasonably good shape, and then i would hope that come september when everybody returns that some of the heat will have gone out of this dispute. Because the one thing that i would have to test is to what extent the president s anger and vindictiveness in spite actually infect the whole administration, is this just infect the whole administration, is thisjust a question infect the whole administration, is this just a question of not being received by donald trump at a dinner in qatar . Orders that spread into the white house staff and the National Security council . Will serve him find himself shot out with all kinds of meetings . There was a cancellation earlier today at a meeting involving the commerce secretary and liam fox. Thats one of the things you have to find out, how untenable is your position as ambassador, your ability to do the job, has become as a result of the president s fury at the leaked cash of telegrams which sikkim sent back to london . Even by Donald Trumps extraordinary standards it would shock people that he would double down, having been so vocal in his tweets yesterday, it demonstrates that this is becoming an asymmetrical relationship. This is not entirely surprising that this president. We have seen on previous occasions that he tends to ruminate on things and wakes up in the morning and tends to double down on them. His initial tweet yesterday seem them. His initial tweet yesterday seem to come in the wake of Prime Minister mays defensive said kim derek, and trump does not have anything to lose at this stage. Theresa may will be gone in two weeks so there is no incentive for him to be nice to her, and it is in keeping for him to hit back at those who he thinks of this speculation has been rife given this speculation has been rife about who is behind all the motives behind this league, is there a sense at all that donald trump is taking the bait and playing a role in whatever is behind this . It certainly will be interesting to see who is responsible for the leaks. There seem to be two possibilities, one to somebody within the british syste m one to somebody within the british system who potentially has an axe to grind orare seeking system who potentially has an axe to grind or are seeking to play a role in the leadership contest or in the brexit debate, the other possibility that people are of course discussing, especially given the journalist who leaked the documents on her ties to aaron banks and his ties to russian money influencing the campaign, is whether or not there is Foreign Government interference, and certainly whichever one of those two directions this goes, there will be significant consequences. It seems the government is ruling out foreign intervention. Given that we are seeing the politicisation of the Civil Service in britain, what happens if the next ambassador to washington is more of a political figure rather than someone from britains Civil Service . That is not without precedent. It is not unusual for the British Ambassador to be a political appointee. I can think of three straight off the cuff. And there may have been others, ijust cant remember. So there is a precedent for political appointees. It is quite possible that the new Prime Minister will appoint somebody whom he considers more congenial to his way of thinking and the way in which he wants to handle relations with United States. But to pick up a point i had christiansen early on about the asymmetric nature of the relationship between britain and the us, this is not unprecedented. Go back to 1956 in the suez crisis, where the Us Administration used all its power and strength to stop us in oui its power and strength to stop us in our invasion of the suez canal with france and israel. We showed our viewers the different approaches thatjeremy hunt and borisjohnson appeared to be taken, which do you think is the better approach, to stand robust and push back and say, thatis stand robust and push back and say, that is our ambassador, he will stay, all as you said to be more congenial with donald trump . |j stay, all as you said to be more congenialwith donald trump . I think we should play this semi long. It may well be that trump will get even more steamed up offered to another nights sleep and come out with more extreme language tomorrow. We have to wait for the immediate storm to pass, we have to wait and see exactly how constrained, how hamstrung pass, we have to wait and see exactly how constrained, how sir kim will turn out to be, and hope that when we have a new government in britain, when the Summer Holidays are over, when everybody is back in washington, there can be a fresh start. I thinkjeremy hunt said the very least a British Foreign secretary can say in the circumstances. His statement was pretty mild, it asked for respect, which is not an unreasonable thing to quest, the whole thing is on the prism of brexit and the contest between him and borisjohnson. You asked me to comment on boriss approach, so fighters beat make no comment at all on the row with President Trump. Maybe debate tonight he will be obliged to Say Something more concrete than he has, but there is nothing wrong with what Jeremy Hunter said. Our interest is for this to wind down, and it may be some time for this to happen, so we have to be patient and resist the temptation to jump into the mosh have to be patient and resist the temptation tojump into the mosh pit with donald trump. Sorry to interrupt you there. Amanda, do you think Donald Trumps administration will toe the line and follow their bosss lead . That is the big question right here in washington. Everybody is trying to decipher what donald trump meant by his tweet. Yesterday, he said we would not deal with kim derek any more, reporters and not been able to get the straight answer on whether or not he has been formally png read, they are pointing fingers, but as we are seeing with the Treasury Department this inviting him from the dinner la st this inviting him from the dinner last night, the Commerce Department cancelling a dinner, it appears that senior political officials are trying to respect the letter and the spirit of Donald Trumps wishes in his tweet. Always a pleasure, thank you both for your views on that. Png, persona non grata. Not as ostracised as donald trump likes to perceive that he was. When you look at some of the invitations that politico has gathered over the last year, you will see that in fact, you might not be able to see actually, but in that tweet from jake sherman, there are a list of parties and events, celebrations, at the British Embassy in washington, and a lot of names of people from the administration, very senior people. All these sort of people who flow through the British Embassy from time to time. My bet is that sir christophers point, whoever holds the social can do for the British Embassy might have a quite summer ahead scale it back, i hope it blows over. So as discussed conservative leadership rivals Boris Johnson and jeremy hunt are preparing to debate each other, in just under an hours time. The itv debate will be the first and only time the two go up against each other before the postal ballots are returned. Lets speak to vicki young our chief Political Correspondent whos in salford ahead of tonights debate. I always like to think it is like a boxing match, they are in their respective dressing rooms, being taped up, ready to go, what is happening backstage at the moment . am sure that is happening somewhere. This of course the first head to head debate and the only one they will have, and team hunt have been very critical of borisjohnson, saying he has been hiding from scrutiny, he has not done as many interviews, he did not want to debate early on because those postal ballots to conservative Party Members went out a few days ago, and most people think that those receiving them fill out the form, send it back quickly, so could this contest already be over . It is certainlyjeremy hunts last chance to turn things around, he is seen as being the underdog in this contest. As you were talking about there, this whole row with donald trump, that personal criticism of theresa may, how will borisjohnson respond to that . He will be pinned down i think a lot more closely in the debate tonight because he could talk about having a Good Relationship with the white house will being critical of brexit policy, but the question is, would he stand by the uk ambassador or not . It is a decision he potentially will have to make in two weeks time. Historically, the conservative party has been synonymous with the british establishment. How has the party got to the point where it is looking at a politician who has so many questions about his character . That is the criticism of borisjohnson, not only that, that has been raised an awful lot, and certainlyjeremy hunt has been betraying himself as a steady, serious figure, that is how he frames it, and obviously hoping to be contrasted with borisjohnson, but mrjohnsons team say he was in london may, he fulfilled that role, they did not talk about his role as foreign secretary so much and there will be questions about this this evening, and it is part of the reason people think borisjohnson has not done as many interviews, because he does not want to answer those questions. Recently, there was a flurry of activity but the row he had with his girlfriend. When he is asked this question is, he says he will not answer them, he doesnt wa nt to will not answer them, he doesnt want to dragged his loved ones into this, and that is his response. He will not go there. But with the tory Party Faithful, he has always been popular, they seem to go for that exuberant character at this time, and the same with conservative mps. So many of them said things about borisjohnson so many of them said things about Boris Johnson that so many of them said things about borisjohnson that i would not be able to say to you on air, and yet over half of them have swung behind him because they now feel he is their only chance of delivering brexit by the end of october, of trying to beat nigel farage and take away that threat, and they hope to beatJeremy Corbyn, so thats why they are getting behind him, and thats why they think the tory Party Faithful will do so as well. Meanwhile the labour leader Jeremy Corbyn announced today that in the event a tory government striking a deal on brexit or tries to take the uk out without a deal, then he and his party will proactively support a referendum and in those circumstances labour will campaign for remain. It is an evolution in the partys position. But there has been no indication yet on what would be on the partys manifesto in the event of a general election. And Jeremy Corbyn has refused to say whether labour would want to remain if the party won power or whether they would be negotiating a new deal. Here isjohn here is john pienaar. Jeremy corbyn has bowed to pressure inside his party. Labour have pledged to fight the deal or no deal brexit of the next Prime Minister and campaign to stay in. As labour party of remain 01 stay in. As labour party of remain or leave . Labour is a party that says we hit are going to take no deal off the table and people will have the choice. Do they want to accept no deal or vote on the possibility of remaining. We are a big democratic organisation, i spent some time consulting with all parts of the labour party and Labour Movement and we have come to this position. We have a democratic process and will decide on our election position when that comes. Maybe you are fearful of losing more support. I have been listening. But the pressure to support another referendum had grown too loud to ignore and next the anti brexiteers in labour will demand that the party backs were made before the election and if it wins and today they are celebrating. Members have been telling us they want us to be and remain party and want us to put the new deal to the people. We will now campaign for that and im proud that the shadow cabinet have listened to their concerns. We had further discussions about what we do before and during an election. Other state labour last back brexit deal. People say what they want but do not explain how to get there and the idea that Boris Johnson explain how to get there and the idea that borisjohnson is going to become Prime Minister and then say lets put this to a referendum, it is just not lets put this to a referendum, it isjust not going lets put this to a referendum, it is just not going to happen. Lets put this to a referendum, it isjust not going to happen. Would labour lose more new supporters now and what about the remaining members who have turned away, is it already too late to bring back the droves of labour supporters who deserted labour supporters who deserted labour because of your position so faron labour because of your position so far on brexit . Labour will offer something very different, a radical change in our country where we value everybody, not the tax giveaways that Boris Johnson and jeremy everybody, not the tax giveaways that borisjohnson and jeremy hunt are competing on. The labour brexit plan is still a work in progress. Pro remain to date but labour could still go to the next election promising to get a better deal in europe and then call a referendum on that. If that happens will it be pro remain or pro leave, Jeremy Corbyn has put off deciding election policy until later. Both major parties are feeling the squeeze of brexit and neither one knows how to handle it. I guess some of these positions will evolve further depending on who becomes Prime Minister. Then it will becomes Prime Minister. Then it will be through the summer we start to see which direction the government is going on. And then we will see labour develop their position. President trump has been hosting the amir of qatar at the white house this afternoon and if theres one foriegn country that can defuse tensions between the us and iran its likely qatar. According to officials, the qataris have offered to mediate between the washington and tehran. Keep in mind saudi arabia, the united arab emirates, bahrain and egypt have maintained a sea, air and land blockade around qatar since june 2017. Precisely because of those ties with iran. Nonetheless much of the emphasis today was on Investment Opportunities between the two countries. Were joined now by Ilan Goldenberg the director of the middle east Security Program at the center for a new american security. I guess im curious to understand why qatar has offered to mediate between washington and tehran, what is in it for them. Qatar generally, they take a different position to some other gulf states to take a harder line against iran. The country position has been to try to play the middle road on the issue and on the one hand they are concerned about this big neighbour right across the water that threatens them in some ways and is kind of scary over there and continues with the pursuit of destabilising behaviour and issues that can be problematic in the region but they also share the vast majority of their wealth in this huge gas field that they share with iran and so their attitude has a lwa ys iran and so their attitude has always been to try to find some kind of way forward in the middle and live with and deal with the iranians instead of competing with them the way saudi arabia or even the uae do. Is there any hope on their part to see some movement on the issue of the blockade and is that what this is about . I think basically the visit to washington was ultimately about the us and cut our relationship and when the blockade was first announced two years ago by saudi arabia and the uae President Trump came out forcefully on the side of saudi arabia and the uae for them to use on it is clear that he has made up with qatar and effectively they have managed to woo the president with a combination of significant investments in the United States across the economy, a large arms sale and the fact that qatar maintains still the most important military base for the us in the middle east. So i think what this visit shows is the relationship between the us and qatar will go on even though there is little hope at this point of trying to break the blockade or come to some kind of agreement because both of these sides, all of these sides, they are in deadlock and no one seems to be able to break it. So were just living with this new reality of a fractured Gulf Cooperation Council and gulf region and that is just people continuing to move ahead with their policies. Because that seems to be no way out of this blockade. spent some time on that air base it is key for the americans and played a key role in the war in iraq and subsequent peacekeeping operations. Do you get the impression that the americans are trying to shove qatar towards the other arab states, the qatari Prime Minister a couple of months ago was injeddah and it seems that theyre trying to bring these two sides together because they see this role that qatar could play. The United States is not interested in a rift amongst its partners. Their biggest priorities in the middle east, one is countering iran and the other is dealing with the threat ofjihadist extremism. And both of those interests are extremism. And both of those interests a re better extremism. And both of those interests are better served when you have a unified gulf with all working together to address these challenges and problems. And instead of spending all their time fighting with each other. So you had numerous high level american convoys going out to try to solve this problem but i think the administration has settled on the fact that there is no solving the problem right now, we will find quite ways for them to begin cooperating on things like the trip to jeddah as begin cooperating on things like the trip tojeddah as you said. The us will apply some pressure to try to bring them closer together where it cant but that is all the us can do. And i think that is also the rest of the International Community and the uk. Thank you for your thoughts. Now to something completely different. It is a distinctly human trait. Getting with the beat. Picking the right move for the right song. But there is a bird, a cockatoo, by the name of snowball who has learnt not only how to dance but how to girate in sync with the music. Many of you will have seen him. These moves went viral in 2007 when his owners posted a video on youtube back in 2007 millions of people have watched him. Lets get the music up. Neuroscientists have identified 1a separate moves including the side to side, the head foot synch and even the vogue. Strike a pose. Shake a tail feather. You know. Anyway their study published in the current biologyjournal says that snowballs performance of different manouevres, demonstrates that he is in fact a curator. He is developing moves to interact socially. This is beyond 100 days from the bbc. Coming up for viewers on the bbc news channel and bbc world news well get more on the calls for the us labor secretary alex acosta to resign over his role in the 2008 plea deal of the financierJeffrey Epstein. Good evening. For those of you in scotla nd good evening. For those of you in scotland on your Summer Holiday break you probably would have liked to see skies like this in cornwall and repeated across many parts of South West England and south wales today. What you got to something closer to this, a pretty wet day in edinburgh and that repeated across much of scotland and Northern Ireland and the north of england. Still waiting at the moment and will be through the night across much of scotla nd be through the night across much of scotland and Northern Ireland. Further south most places staying dry and quite muggy. Even warmer than recent nights as well across scotla nd than recent nights as well across scotland and Northern Ireland. Still High Pressure to the south of the uk on wednesday. We could just see a greater chance of some showers in the south but only a small chance at wimbledon. Most of the date will be dry and warmer than today. Most places in england and wales think temperatures rising. But still the chance of some showers here and there. Temperatures up to 25 degrees for some. Northern ireland and parts of scotla nd for some. Northern ireland and parts of scotland still seeing some rain come and go. We could see some severe storms developing later across the eastern parts of scotland which could have an impact on the wednesday evening rush hour. These storms are slow to move east, lingering into the evening before fading. Then on thursday a story of the sunshine and showers and quite a lot of clout at times. Feeling pleasa ntly warm lot of clout at times. Feeling pleasantly warm and the chance of some showers in the south but the main focus is the north of england, central and eastern scotland. Temperatures widely into the 20s. On friday the showers back across eastern scotland, maybe not quite as severe. Some showers for england and wales but a lot of dry weather not feeling quite as warm but still pleasa nt feeling quite as warm but still pleasant in the sunshine. Not as humid either and into the weekend fewer showers and more in the way of dry weather. This is beyond one hundred days with me, Michelle Fleury, in new york, Christian Fraser is in london. The chief executive of hong kong, carrie lam, has said that the controversial bill she was pushing which would have allowed extradition to the chinese mainland is dead, though she refused to say that it had been fully withdrawn. The bill will lapse at the end of the current parliamentary term. The bill sparked weeks of unrest in the city, and protesters have vowed to continue their rallies until the Hong Kong Government meets five key demands, including the full withdrawal of the bill. A short time ago, we spoke to lord patten, who served as the final governor of hong kong from 1992 until the end of British Colonial rule in 1997. Lord patten, carrie lam has basically said the extradition bill is dead but she did not go so far as making it official. How significant is that, will it be enough . I think her tone of voice was a great deal better. She talked about the overwhelming majority of people who have demonstrated and there have been a series of marches, up to 2 million people, having done so peacefully and making their point and their concerns about hong kong and its future in the most effective possible way. And she said it had only been a tiny minority, a small minority who had broken into the Legislative Council the other day and could be accused of anything violent. I hope that tone of voice will be replicated by some of beijings spokesman. Now, whether she has gone quite far enough, im not sure. I think she wants to underline the fact that the extradition bill which has caused so much concern is really dropped, she is not going to bring it back. Given how vital beijing is to britains post brexit future, should britain get involved at all in the affairs of hong kong . I do not think brexit is going to be affected very much by china in the future. Frankly, the idea that in order to sell things to china you have to kowtow is absurd. We have duties and obligations towards hong kong, we still help have even in a post brexit world, a sense of not honour as a country and we owe hong kong to stand up for them because we signed a treaty with china and, when we left hong kong, when we handed hong kong back to china which is supposed to guarantee hong kong freedoms and a high degree of autonomy for 50 years after 1997. And it is not 50 years after 1997 yet. So here we are, lord patten, being bullied by the chinese, while simultaneously being bullied by the american president. I dare say you as a remainer would say well, there you go, britain alone is much weaker . I would say that. You are quite right. On the question of President Trump and his latest effusions, the first thing to say is that kim darroch is a very distinguished, very intelligent, very public spirited civil servant. A servant of his country. I do not think you would say any of that about President Trump. I think the British Government and other governments would have been very surprised if kim darrochs dispatches from washington had suggested that the administration was very competent, that President Trump was a great diplomat. That really would have surprised people because they would have known that our ambassador had lost his marbles. What we cannot accept is a situation in which a bully in the white house is going to decide who represents the United Kingdom abroad. I do not want us to see is trapped on our own between bullies in beijing and bullies in washington. Ijust ask in the wider context, Angela Merkel said that europeans can no longer rely on the United States. I watched the interview with joe biden, president ial hopeful, last week and he said one of the first things he is going to do if he gets into the white house is to reset the post war alliances with europeans. Do tweets like this do real damage, could it be too late for the next american president , is europe starting to look a different way now because of the kind of bullying that we are seeing . I think we all recognise that this is an extraordinary and not in a flattering sense of the word, administration. President trump is to diplomacy what dolly parton is to heavy metal welding this is an exceptional way of handling your allies. It is extraordinary that he thinks the best way of ensuring that america is great, which it is, is by rorting of his allies dolly parton, welding . I wouldnt rule it out. Mexico has until the end ofjuly to show that its reducing the flow of migrants to the United States or else face tariffs on its exports. These are the terms of a controversial deal president Lopez Obrador signed with us President Trump. The bbcs ana Gabriela Rojas has been to mexicos southern border with guatemala to see the mr obradors plan in action. The perfect pr drill. Newjeeps. Shiny uniforms. And a brand new badge. Mexico has created a new Security Force called the national guard. And invited the media for their first day on the job. We are at mexicos southern border with guatemala. The border between guatemala and mexico is hundreds of kilometres long. Full of rivers, mountains and forests. There are many question marks about how mexico can really control this area. Half a million migrants have already crossed using unofficial routes this year alone. Many are dreaming of a better life in the United States. Maria, not her real name, is from honduras. We are protecting her identity. Translation we left honduras because gang members cut off two of my sons fingers. We are only passing through mexico to the usa, but the authorities have our papers. When they expire, they want to deport us. Immigration officials are on high alert in tapachula. And are now supported by the national guard. Mexico needs to be seen to be tough, especially after President Trump threatened to impose tariffs on its exports. If he didnt cut the number of migrants reaching the us border. But critics say president Lopez Obrador should have stood firm. Translation trumps wall starts here, and the Mexican Government is somehow paying for it. The mexican president rejects this during a visit to tapachula. Translation we are protecting migrants so they dont become victims of people trafficking. For the young and old, sleeping on the streets, the us border feels a long way away. But many ask how mexico can seek support for its own undocumented people in the United States when its prepared to implement similar policies at home. Hundreds of journalists in hundreds ofjournalists in prisons and last year dozens were killed. And its against this background that the british and canadian governments will host a global conference for Media Freedom in london tomorrow. Around 60 ministers and a thousand reporters will attend the event but two Russian Media organisations will not be there. Rt and sputnik News Agencies have been banned by the Uks Foreign Office for playing an active role in spreading disinformation. For more, i spoke to the bbcs russia and disinformation specialist olga robinson. There has been a lot of controversy about russia today and sputniks reporting of the years. Were you surprised they were singled out and banned from this event . surprised they were singled out and banned from this event . I would say not really. I have been covering Russian Media for the past six yea rs. Russian media for the past six years. This Media Conference, the first Media Conference of this kind, isa first Media Conference of this kind, is a major event where thousands of people take part, thousands of journalists across the globe and also public figures, and russia today and sputnik has been described. They have been banned from attending the event because the Foreign Office which organises it considers them essentially media who are actively engaged in spreading disinformation, and russia today and sputnik, according to many media experts and analysts across the globe, are essentially very effective tools to push its lines and also to influence Public Opinion abroad. The obvious one that people would think about is the interview they did with the two suspects from they did with the two suspects from the salisbury poisoning, so the chief executive, the editor in chief, did these interviews, it was not particularly forensic, was it . Not necessarily. We were translating the interviews in my department as we saw it. We were really surprised by some of the questions because it looked like, she wasnt trying to find out what it is they were doing in salisbury in march last year, but she was rather trying to divert attention by some of the questions to some school themes, and even hinting that they were possibly gay. What are the repercussions of this . It is quite visible the action the organisers have ta ken. It is quite visible the action the organisers have taken. Is there likely to be a repercussion in russia for western broadcasters . Very often, when it comes to russia today and sputnik, russian authorities are very quick to respond, it is usually a very angry response, and last year in fact, when ofcom found russia today in breach of impartiality rules, and in fa ct breach of impartiality rules, and in fact seven programmes on the skripal poisoning, were found in breach of those rules, and straight after that the british media working in russia, in particular the bbc, was subjected toa in particular the bbc, was subjected to a cheque straight after that. That was launched by russian authorities, and they did find they say irregularities, and were still waiting for the final results of those checks to out. Which could carry sanctions . Potentially, yes, even potentially a ban on british journalists or russian journalists working for the bbc in russia from working for the bbc in russia from working in the country. Thank you very much indeed. The pressure is building on the us labor secretary, alex acosta, after new charges were brought against american financier Jeffrey Epstein for sex trafficking involving minors. Epstein has pleaded not guilty but, in 2008, he struck a deal in florida to avoid more serious charges, and one of the prosecutors who helped craft the agreement was mr acosta. Leading democrats, like nancy pelosi and chuck schumer, are calling on the labor secretary to resign in light of his role in that plea deal. Today, mr acosta said he was pleased that ny authorities are moving forward with new evidence. President trump was asked about the controversy, and had this to say. I do hear that there were a lot of people involved in that decision, notjust him. He has been a really great secretary of labor. The rest of it we will have to look at. We will have to look at it very carefully. I feel very badly actually for secretary acosta because i have known him as being somebody that works so hard and has done such a good job. Joining us now is elisabeth bumiller, Washington Bureau chief for the new york times. We said yesterday on the programme that the trial ofJeffrey Epstein would have other implications for seniorfigures in would have other implications for senior figures in washington, would have other implications for seniorfigures in washington, and so it is proving. The labour secretary was a prosecutor in miami and did cut this very lenient deal 11 years ago. That is absolutely right. And right now, the president is standing by him, but there are calls all over the place for his resignation. The miami herald which broke the most recent story about what happened in florida wrote a scathing editorial this morning calling for his resignation. Mr acosta says he got the best deal possible at the time. There is some debate about that amongst former prosecutors in his office, some support and say it was true, it was a tough case, they did not have a lot of cooperation at the time from the women, they suspected they were paid off, they felt it would be hard to make a case, other people in the office say that he should have made a case, they argued strongly for it. In the end, it was the plea deal, one of the most perplexing questions is why was it kept secret from the victims, and there has never been a real explanation for that up until this point. A lot of Top Democrats are calling for his resignation but where were they when he was approved for his current position . A good question. Not as much of this was known during his confirmation hearing, it came up a bit but since then the miami herald has published its choice and there is much more detail so again this raises questions again about the Trump Administration and the white house vetting procedure of nominees from cabinet positions. The champ white house has a sorry record on vetting. This probably could have been uncovered but in any case this is where we are now and again as long as the president stands by him it does not seem that he will go anywhere. But this is tuesday and things could change very quickly in washington. He ventured a quick thought last night on twitter that this row surrounding kim darroch could be inflated to distract from what is going on withJeffrey Epstein, would that be beyond the pale . That is a new one just a thought i think they are separate, i think donald trump, say what you wa nt i think donald trump, say what you want about him but he is transparent in his dislikes. And i think he was embarrassed and angered by the ambassador and his cables and he lashed back as he does in many cases. Probably reading too much into it stay with us as we want to get your thoughts on ross perot. He was the texas billionaire who shook up us politics in the 1990s. Ross perot has died at the age of 89 but certainly leaves a legacy. In 1992, he leaped into the president ial race as an independent and ended up getting 19 of the vote. He spoke to voters turned off by the two major parties and ran again in 1996 but didnt fare as well. Elisabeth bumiller is still with us for more on the impact he had. What was his egoist impact . Biggest impact. He showed the strength of Third Party Candidates in this country. When he rang that was the strongest showing of a Third Party Candidate 1912. He also showed how the dissatisfaction with a lot of middle class americans with the democrats and the republicans, most of his votes came from Middle America and the middle class. And to this day members of the bush family insist that he, that because of ross perot george bush lost his second term and they blame that on ross perot. Since then scholars have disputed that notion and say in fact that most of his support did not come from republicans but nonetheless again it shows the strength of Third Party Candidates if they are interesting candidates. Ina if they are interesting candidates. In a sense he was the disrupter before the disrupter. He was not for blowing things up, he was not far right, he believed it was a much more positive notion of america that he had. The lifting of taxes, you know, free enterprise, free trade. Again much more positive notions of america than the tea party and much less conservative than the tea party. Thank you so much for your time and your insights. This is beyond one hundred days. Still to come. Setting records at the tender age of three years well speak to the boy who climbed Three Mountains to honour his best friend. Employees from ethnic minority groups in the uk earned on average 4 less than their white counterparts last year. Whoo a new generation of graduates. Today, these young people at Bath University are celebrating their academic achievements, and many will go on to be part of britains future workforce. But according to a new report, some of these graduates could see differences in pay because of their ethnicity. So, what does the Ethnicity Pay gap actually mean . If you line up all the workers in britain in order of their pay, its how the salary of the white person in the middle compares with that of the ethnic minority person, also in the middle. So, its notjust about whether white people and ethnic minorities are getting equal pay for equal work, but also to what extent ethnic minorities are joining and progressing to better paid jobs. The new report found ethnic minorities earn nearly 4 less than white ethnic groups. In london, this is even higher, with a pay gap of nearly 22 . If we look at hourly pay, white workers will earn £12, compared with just £9. 60 for people from bangladeshi backgrounds. And those from chinese families earn much more. £15. 75 an hour. As the uk becomes more culturally rich, there are growing calls for all employers to publish their Ethnicity Pay gap figures, similar to the gender pay gap, to ensure broad fairness for the changing faces as the uk becomes more culturally rich, there are growing adina campbell, bbc news.
