Election on the 12th of december so channels to presume there are meetings and have a sensible that we can finally get brexit done. Timetable for the bill that we have before us so that this house can there is no support from the benches resume discussion of these serious opposite for this to proceed. But matters and come to a resolution on the house cannot any longer keep the deal which, personally, this country hostage. Millions of matters and come to a resolution on the dealwhich, personally, i repeat, i will vote for, and if it families and businesses cannot plan for the future, and i dont believe reaches the reading, as i think it will, and it could well be that we could get back to the orderly government which i think the general that this paralysis and stagnation should be allowed to continue. Now public are dearly wishing we would rapidly do. I have noted what he has that no deal is off the table, we said and rapidly do. I have noted what he has said and i am open to any such have a great new deal. We have a discussions, but it does require great new deal. It is time for the willing participants. And it remains to be seen with the passage of time whether that be so. But i think voters to have a chance to pronounce on that deal and to replace this everyone will be attentive on this occasion, as of every other, to what the father of the house has had to Dysfunctional Parliament with a new one that can get brexit done so that say to us and take benefit from his the country can move on. You are 00 02 05,688 4294966103 13 29,430 watching a bbc 49 years of experience. MrJeremy Corbyn. Thank you, mr speaker, i apologise to you and the Prime Minister for apologise to you and the Prime Ministerfor not being apologise to you and the Prime Minister for not being present at the point of order, i was detained outside of the chamber. I am back here. I understand a bill that will be tabled tomorrow. We will always look and scrutinise that bill, and we look forward to a clear, definitive decision that no deal is absolutely off of the table and that there is no danger of this Prime Minister not sticking to his word because he has some form on these matters, and is taking this country out of the eu without any deal whatsoever, knowing the damage it will do twojobs whatsoever, knowing the damage it will do two jobs and industries all across this country. That point stands in its own right. Point of order on a completely unrelated matter, Esther Stephen doughty. Thank you, as you know i believe in correcting things when i get things wrong and i want to apologise to the honourable member for east yorkshire. I understand he has been readopted by his association, and i wa nt to readopted by his association, and i want to apologise for mistaking his seat for another, i truly apologise to him. Typically gracious of the honourable gentleman. And i have a sense that it will be accepted. Let us sense that it will be accepted. Let us heara sense that it will be accepted. Let us hear a response. You are watching beyond 100 days. The prime minusters third attempt to call a general election has just failed. He told mps the government will now give notice of a short bill for a general election on december 12. Our chief Political Correspondent vicki young is in the central lobby of the houses of parliament for us. No surprise, one suspects, that the government would lose the emotion that they have put forward today. What about movements now on this bill, a 19 bill that they have put forward , bill, a 19 bill that they have put forward, or at least they will do so before the house tomorrow . Yes, complicated stuff, but there is more than one way to get to a general election, tonight they have tried through the fixed term parliaments act and you need two thirds of mps to back it. Even though it looks that the government has won on those numbers, 299 to 70, it does not make the threshold required. Another way to get to the election is to introduce a bill which says, forget about the fixed term parliaments act, we will have an election on a certain date and that is put in the bill, and what borisjohnson is going to do is to lay it down tonight and it can be discussed and voted on tomorrow, and he is again going for the date of the 12th of december. Now, this was an idea thought about by the lib dems and the snp. They have discussed this, they have said that they would bring forward a bill but with the date of the 9th of december in it. And the big question now, because it would only require a single majority to get it through, is whether the lib dems and the snp would go for it, because it does not matter what the labour party would do, there would be enough people if you could get the tories plus the snp and lib dems to get that through. Let us speak to Stephen Gethins of the snp to give us Stephen Gethins of the snp to give usa Stephen Gethins of the snp to give us a reaction. You have spoken a lot about wanting another general election. Borisjohnson has said will bring it before the house tomorrow, this is the opportunity you have been waiting for. Let us have a look at the bill. We want a general election and we want to see the back of the tories, but fundamentally we want to stop exit and we want the opportunity to remain within the eu. Let us have a look at that bill. I do not want to sign off on anything that safeguards borisjohnson sign off on anything that safeguards Boris Johnson dodgy brexit. I want to stop exit. So you do not want him to have time to bring or carry on the passage of the bill, the Withdrawal Agreement bill, which got its second reading, went past the first age, you are worried that he might try to rush that through parliament in between now and that general election, or the dissolving of parliament . Yes, we dont trust him. That Withdrawal Agreement only got its second reading because members of the labour party voted for it. We know that that agreement makes people poorer, it hits our Public Services and takes away opportunities from young people. Dont just and takes away opportunities from young people. Dontjust take my word for it, that is what the uk governments loan analysis found. We dont want that, we want people to be givena dont want that, we want people to be given a proper choice. So you would want some kind of commitment from the government that they will not try to get their daily through . Yes, we want something that can stop brexit, we do not think that is giving people a choice. We want to see that it nailed down. We want to see that it nailed down. We want to see this bill, i dont trust this Prime Minister, he is the most untrustworthy person to hold the office of Prime Minister in our lifetimes. Please forgive me but you will not be surprised that we want to read the fine print of this bill when it comes out. Isnt the truth that your party is split on this . One of your colleagues said he did not want to have an election and he will not vote for it because he thinks that borisjohnson will return here with a big majority and the smp will have been partly responsible for getting him into that position . I think you have spoken to one member out of 35 and i respectfully disagree. I have spent three years, more than three years, voting for that second referendum, trying to find every which way to remain, take no deal off the table, revoke article 50, have that as our default position. The smp could not have done more to help us remain in the eu. Smp. We have done more to help us remain in the eu. Smp. We crash out on the latest on the 31st ofjanuary and we do not have the numbers at the moment for that peoples vote that we keep on voting for and the liberal party keep on voting against. So, this is our opportunity to see the back of the 40s. The snp is pretty confident that we can wipe out the tories in scotland and we will heavily campaign against them and a disastrous and dodgy brexit that will cost far too manyjobs in scotland and elsewhere. I want to see the back of the tories, i do not trust borisjohnson see the back of the tories, i do not trust Boris Johnson remaining see the back of the tories, i do not trust borisjohnson remaining in power as Prime Minister. Trust borisjohnson remaining in poweras Prime Minister. It trust borisjohnson remaining in power as Prime Minister. It gets too many opportunities to crash us out with no deal without a say. Thank you very much indeed. That is the view from the snp who want to see the bill. We should get to see it later tonight and all eyes will also be on labourand later tonight and all eyes will also be on labour and Jeremy Corbyn, qt he backed the bill . He has said that he backed the bill . He has said that he wants to be very clear that no deal is off the table and we would have to see what he means by that. He is clearly not happy with that extension which has been agreed today, of course, we will not be leaving the eu on thursday as planned and as promised by Boris Johnson. That has been moved to the 3ist johnson. That has been moved to the 31st of january. The question is whether that is enough forJeremy Corbyn to agree to an election before christmas. Vicki young, it is Michelle Fleury here. With the lib dems and the snp teaming up they can get their majority, how solid do you think that supporters . |j get their majority, how solid do you think that supporters . I think that isa think that supporters . I think that is a problem. These things have a lwa ys is a problem. These things have always been an issue. If you have opposition parties working together oi opposition parties working together or working with the government, clearly, many people feel unhappy about that. The problem is that those parties, the lib dems and as we have heard and as we have heard from the snp, they do not trust the Prime Minister and they wa nt to trust the Prime Minister and they want to make sure that that bill is watertight. But it means going through several stages in the houses of commons. It also has to go through the house of lords and there could be peers in the house of lords who would also do what they could to try and block a general election. So, it is not an easy path, not like the old days where before the fixed term parliaments act a Prime Minister, certainly one who was the short of majority and really finding it difficult to govern, could simply call an election and have that election when they want it. It is not like that any more, which is why borisjohnson is not like that any more, which is why Boris Johnson is finding not like that any more, which is why borisjohnson is finding it so difficult to get to the election that he wants. Vicki young at westminster, thank you so much. Yet again, it is not yet clear whether borisjohnson will get again, it is not yet clear whether Boris Johnson will get that election. We will be back tomorrow to talk about that vote. Now two events in the middle east. The worlds most wanted terrorist is dead. Isis leader Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi blew himself up after being cornered by Us Special Forces in a tunnel in north west syria, in territory thought to be hostile to him. Al baghdadi at one time controlled an area the size of Great Britain, carrying out atrocities which resulted in thousands of deaths. Many hostages were beheaded. But in recent years, the group lost ground in the middle east. Al baghdadis death could not have come at a better time for donald trump. The president has been criticised for withdrawing troops from syria, and is facing an impeachment inquiry by his democratic opponents. Mr trump watched the special forces operation from the white house situation room, and gave this description of what happened. We captured a man that should have been caught a long time ago. Unfortunately, he wasnt, and he has done tremendous damage. But it was an amazing display of intelligence and military power and coordination in getting along with people. Lots of great things happened. So that was a big, big day. Before coming on air, i spoke with former cia director and retired us army general, david petraeus. General petraeus, what is the significance of the death of al baghdadi . I think it is very significant. It is a huge achievement. Al baghdadi was, after all, the leader who established achievements that had never been seen before by islamist extremists, not even by Osama Bin Laden. He established the first caliphate, controlled an area which i think it is roughly the size of Great Britain, certainly the size of the state of indiana, a very large portion of Northern Iraq and North Eastern syria. He also took the whole effort on social media and the internet to an entirely new level. So this finality of his death, obviously, literally puts a stake through the heart of many of the images that he tried to project, not the least of which, again, was this extraordinary achievement of the caliphate. All of that said, and every observer has noted that history shows us that the death of a leader of an extremist organisation, even a hugely successful one like baghdadi or even Osama Bin Laden or al zarqawi or others does not end the threat posed by the organisation they led. Given your background in intelligence, i mean, an operation like this, a raid like this depends on having intelligence on the ground but with us troops withdrawing from syria, does that mean an operation like this would not be possible in the future or at least would be a lot harder . I think the reassuring news of recent days is that the United States is going to retain somewhere around 50 or 60 of that area that they controlled before, using, of course, the Syrian Democratic forces, largely Syrian Kurdish forces on the ground North Eastern syria. That is quite heartening. When i heard that we were withdrawing completely from North Eastern syria, i thought that that represented a new opportunity for the Islamic State, an opportunity for a resurgence. It gave a victory to iran and russia, not our friends and indeed, it called into question our credibility, notjust in syria but around the world. So this willingness to have an enduring presence, to ensure an enduring defeat of the Islamic State, again, it has never been enough to just defeat or even destroy, as we did, alqaeda in iraq during the surge. You have to keep focus on them. You have to have a sustained commitment, albeit one that is crafted in a way that is sustainable in terms of the cost in blood and treasure. Who should americans have their eye on in the future, with al baghdadi gone . What is the threat . The truth is that this threat emerges wherever there are ungoverned or even inadequately governed spaces in the muslim world. Extremists will exploit the spaces, and we do have to do something about them because what happens there does not stay there, it tends to spread violence, extremism and instability and as we saw in the case of syria, a tsunami of refugees, not just into neighbouring countries but all the way to europe and our nato allies. And of course, it caused the kind of domestic populism challenges that governments in europe are dealing with now. You talk about a sustained focus but in recent weeks, there seems to be a lot of confusion about what americas strategy has been. I think there have been questions about what is the future of the us commitment, certainly to syria, perhaps to the region. The announced withdrawal, and then adjustment, stay in half or more of the area of syria, again, has brought about some confusion, even as we have on the us side added over a number of months some 14,000 troops to the gulf states to shore up deterrence and defensive capabilities against iran. I am heartened by the fact that we will keep forces in syria, even if it is around the Oil Producing areas. That is not trivial because that was what the Islamic State generated a lot of revenue from when they controlled that area. It is something that would give our Syrian Democratic forces partners continued revenue, and also, frankly, a bargaining chip of considerable value when it comes to dealing with the government in damascus. General petraeus, were out of time. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with us today. Thank you, michelle. She was a rising star in the Democratic Party but last night congresswoman katie hill announced she will be resigning, after allegations of an affair with an aide. In her resignation letter, the freshman representative from california apologised for mistakes made along the way but blamed an abusive husband and hateful political operatives, after naked photos of her appeared in conservative publications. Many have labelled it revenge porn and ms hill said shes exploring legal options. But at 32 years old, she will now be leaving the seat she won less than a year ago. Heather caygle reports on congress for politico and joins us now from capitol hill. Talk us through this. Here is someone accused talk us through this. Here is someone accused of wrongdoing who has denied some of the allegations, admitted to some poorjudgment. So why is she now resigning . Like you said, ithink why is she now resigning . Like you said, i think it is important to note that she has denied that she had a relationship with her congressional staffer, which is the focus of the house ethics committee, and that would have been a violation rules. She said in a letter of house rules. She said in a letter and any follow up video, where she did get pretty emotional and was fighting back tears, that she is deciding to leave because she is afraid that more intimate photos of herand afraid that more intimate photos of her and people close to her will come out, and that will hurt people around her. She so she is hoping that by stepping aside, the drip, drip, drip of revenge pawn, as she calls it, from her ex husband will soon calls it, from her ex husband will soon stop. It is causing a distraction and if someone else runs for the seat, perhaps they can better serve her constituents now. Heather, clive myrie and london. She was a rising star of the Democratic Party and from that freshman class of 2018. She has a seat in the House Oversight committee. Clearly this will be a huge loss for nancy pelosi and the democrats. So, she is a freshman, so to put it into perspective, they do not have a tonne of power on the hill. But like you said, she was one of the most visible freshman and she had not only position of oversight, she was the vice ranking member. It is given toa the vice ranking member. It is given to a junior person to get them to learn the ropes on that. Eventually they can take a more powerful position. She was one of two frenchmen representatives at Nancy Pelosis leadership table and so she was in these leadership meetings with the speaker and other Top Democrats and she brought a voice to the table representing the freshman. There are more representatives from that class that goes to these leadership meetings and they could also replace katy hill. There is discussion about that. But she is deftly missing from the conversation. What did you think of the reaction of nancy pelosi . She basically said that katie hill had made a great contribution but also did not mince her words and said that her position was untenable. Yes, i thought the statement of nancy pelosi was interesting, not only deterrence of it but the brevity. She acknowledged that katie hill brought a contribution to the freshman class and was this leader, a rising star, like you guys have stated, but then she said that she acknowledged the message that mate staying in congress untenable. Not only that, she added sentence that added that congress, like any workplace must maintain high standards. I thought that was very telling. Nancy pelosi did not go into the allegations that katie hill has put forward that this is the hands of another blues abusive husband. That is very interesting. I am not sure what if any private conversations they had before this. And what guidance Speaker Nancy Pelosi oareford katie hill. But the speaker has been the democratic leader for 20 years now, she is no nonsense , every leader for 20 years now, she is no nonsense, every member has allegations against him she is happy to let them prove that they did not do anything wrong but she does not tolerate misdeeds, as she said. That was made clear in her statement. Heather, thank you very much for joining us, live from capitol hill. Michelle, the suggestion that perhaps katie hill had been the victim of revenge pornography, allegedly at the hands of an abusive and estranged husband. These are all allegations, it must be made clear, that will get a measure of sympathy from many in the Democratic Party, and indeed, across the aisle, perhaps, if all of this is borne out to be true. And i think people in washington are used to seeing situations like this involving men in power, here it is a woman. You are also talking about the first openly bisexual members in congress, one of the first, and there is discussion about whether this played into this, the reaction or not. But we make no bones about the fact that our shows title is well beyond its billed duration of 100 days. It was originally to reflect on the first daysin originally to reflect on the first days in office for donald trump. The other week the president marked 1000 daysin other week the president marked 1000 days in the white house. It seems no one paid too much attention to the shows name save the odd Google Search from a confused viewer until last friday. Take a listen to this. This week, its all been about the b word. It was all a tall order for the Prime Minister to get it all done in 100 days but that seems to be a figure that the media love. For some unfathomable reason, bbc news channel still calls its washington based show beyond 100 days when trump has now been in office for nearly three years. Laughter. Its bizarre. Its like calling doctor who beyond christopher ecclestone. Laughter. Like shooting a dock in a barrow, an easy like shooting a dock in a barrow, an easy hit transatlantic was another title people were thinking of, but perhaps we need to move on. You are watching beyond 100 days coming up for viewers on the bbc news channel and bbc world news today with the december general election there were on the cards, we will speak with the Group Pushing for a peoples vote. Are the hopes for a second referendum really over . Hello, apart from some hazy sunshine apart across the south of the country, it was a fine day, plenty of crisp autumn sunshine. The next few days, similar story, we hold on to High Pressure, mainly dry with some to High Pressure, mainly dry with some sunshine, but it will be caught. Here is our area of High Pressure which brought the fine weather to many parts of the country today. These weather fronts are associated with this low pressure which is continuing to slowly make inroads northwards, introducing more cloud. Some patchy rain as well for the Channel Islands and into the south west of england, perhaps even into south wales as we head through the course of the night. Still one or two showers peppering the north and east coast being brought by that breeze but for most it is a cold and clear night. Central and north heiress will have another widespread frost. Mist and fog around, too, which will tend to clear quickly. Tuesday, similar to monday, dry with plenty of sunshine. Showers affecting the north and east coast, cloudy across scotland. For the south west, it remains cloudy with some south west, it remains cloudy with some shower of rain for the south west of england, south wales, more of a breeze here, too, so feeling quite chinni chili because of that strengthening one. For tuesday night, the cloud and rain spreads further northwards. Across the north of the uk, another dry, clear, cold night with widespread frost, but less cloud in the south. High pressure pushes over towards the near continent as we head through wednesday, allowing this low pressure and a weather front to advance further north and eastwards. It could be that many parts of wales, central and southern england could see cloud and hazy sunshine further north. Turning wet and windy for parts of northern ireland. Some of that rain could be quite heavy for wales. The rest of the sunshine and dry weather for scotla nd the sunshine and dry weather for scotland and the north of england where it is another chilly day, 14, 13 degrees. Milder air moving in. For thursday, that High Pressure retreats into the continent a living low pressure to take over, pushing cloud and weather fronts across much of the uk. The amount or air will slowly encroach across the country although it will still be quite cool across the north east. Later this week etched on sweater at times with that mount air moving in. Later this week etched on sweater at times with that mild air moving in. Election on the 12th of december so that we can finally get brexit done. This is beyond 100 days, with me, Michelle Fleury, in washington and clive myrie is in westminster. Our top stories british mps turn down borisjohnsons plan to hold a general election on december 12th but the government say theyll try again by another means tomorrow. The government will give notice of presentation for a short bill for an election on the 12th of december so that we can finally get brexit done. Islamic state leader al baghdadi died a coward says president trump. What does his death do for the fight against extremism . Coming up in the next half hour. These pictures are live from california, where emergency workers are confronting wildfires and high winds are hundreds of people are forced from their homes. Plus, why your approach to persuading people youre in the right, might be all wrong. Well explain. The eu has announced its informal approval of a new brexit extension a full three months, running until january 31st. And with the extension being signed off this week, brussels will watch from the sidelines, as the next moves are decided in westminster. We have just seen mps vote against the governments plan hold an election on december 12th. It was Boris Johnsons third it was borisjohnsons third attempt to call an early election, and each time he has failed to secure the two thirds majority he needed. It is now announced that he will try again tomorrow, but this time via a route that only needs a simple majority. We will not allow this paralysis to continue, and one way or another, we must proceed straight to an election, so later on the scene in the government would give notice of presentation for a short bill for an election on the 12th of december so that we can finally get brexit done. And there is no support in the house that we have heard early on from the benches opposite for the wab to succeed, but the house could no longer hold this country hostage. Our chief Political Correspondent vicki young is in the central lobby of the houses of parliament for us. Has this been put forward yet . No, it hasnt, and the snp and the liberal democrats who first had this idea but are very concerned about what Boris Johnson might idea but are very concerned about what borisjohnson might do between now and parliament being dissolved for that election, they want a commitment from him that the Withdrawal Agreement bill wont be pushed through by him, because of course they dont want brexit to happen. The last thing they want is a bill to go through which delivers brexit before a general election, and what we are just hearing now from number 10 is that they are saying that their Withdrawal Agreement bill will not be brought back, while the election bill goes to the house of commons, so the bill tomorrow that Boris Johnson wants to the house of commons, so the bill tomorrow that borisjohnson wants to introduce for an election on the 12th of december would have to go through the house of commons and the house of lords, and what number 10 are saying now that they will not try to get the Withdrawal Agreement bill through. That is going to upset some bill through. That is going to upset some conservatives. There are lots of conservatives worried about a no deal brexit whojust of conservatives worried about a no deal brexit who just want a deal, they wanted to go through, they were pretty dismayed when borisjohnson decided not to pursue it, wanting to pass that first hurdle a week ago on saturday get through second reading, but we are now hearing that they are going to give that commitment. Of course there is a big questionnaire. To the snp and liberal democrats believe him . To they believe number 10 when they say that. The truth is that it 10 when they say that. The truth is thatitis 10 when they say that. The truth is that it is pretty tight to get any kind of big bill of legislation through between now and then if you wa nt to through between now and then if you want to have an election on the 12th of december. The other question of course is about the date itself. Jo swinson, leader of the liberal democrats, seems to be saying they have already rejected the date of the 12th of december, she wants the 9th of december. Does that mean she wont vote for it . We simply dont know at the moment whether that would happen, but the tories, the conservatives, they do need the snp and the liberal democrats to vote for it if they are not going to get labour, and labour certainly sounded lu kewa rm labour, and labour certainly sounded lukewarm about the whole idea. 0k, vicki, thank you for that. Vicki youngin vicki, thank you for that. Vicki young in the central lobby at westminster. Im joined now by abby tomlinson, an activist at for our futures sake the Student Led Campaign pushing for a peoples vote or a second referendum. Thank you forjoining us. With the liberal democrats and the snp joining forces in calling for an early election, where does that leave the case for a peoples vote . The case for a peoples vote is still very much alive, still very much on the cards. I think we dont actually know that this general election is going to happen yet until it has passed the house of commons. Nowadays in politics you dont want to Say Something is going to happen until we deafening know for sure it is going to happen. The campaign has been growing momentum for the past year and a bit. It was less tha n for the past year and a bit. It was less than a week ago that we had a Million People marching on the streets of london in favour of a peoples vote, and mp5 should look at those people marching and know what the people want, which is a peoples vote. But we know why the liberal democrats of the snp have with the way they have, and that is because there arent the vote in parliament for another referendum, or at least a referendum and am on Boris Johnsons or at least a referendum and am on borisjohnsons deal. That is the simple mathematics of the situation. It might be right now, but we dont know how situations will change. The Peoples Vote Campaign has done an incredible job Peoples Vote Campaign has done an incrediblejob of Peoples Vote Campaign has done an incredible job of persuading mps from all parties to come together and campaignfora from all parties to come together and campaign for a peoples vote. We have mps, lib dems, tories, labour mps that want to peoples vote. I think we can persuade more people to come on our side, i dont think we can say that it is not going to happen right now. But that unity that you talk about in that range of the opposition coming together, that has fractured. We have got labour thinking one way, the liberal democrats and the snp thinking another. That unity was there at the beginning of this whole process to a degree, and we saw several defeats for borisjohnson degree, and we saw several defeats for Boris Johnson in degree, and we saw several defeats for borisjohnson in his attempts to try to move forward brexit in the way that he wanted. Now that opposition has fractured apart, and asa opposition has fractured apart, and as a result, it is causing huge problems. We are a crossparty campaign and it was all was going to be difficult to do that. Mps campaign and it was all was going to be difficult to do that. Mp5 on all parties should look now, is an election going to solve brexit . At the answer that question is no. There is no certainty that we are not going to have another Hung Parliament unable to make decisions, no certainty that we will have a parliament that i can actually decide what it wants from brexit. I think now mps should look to the people and want to look to them to find out what they actually want from brexit, because what they are facing now would borisjohnsons brexit deal is so different to what they were sold in 2016. What about they were sold in 2016. What about the problems within the Peoples Vote Campaign, people being fired and suggestions of disagreement and anger and so and suggestions of disagreement and angerand so on . And suggestions of disagreement and anger and so on . Where is it all going run . I think the nature of such a Large Campaign that has so many people involved in it, youre a lwa ys many people involved in it, youre always going to have disagreements, and the staff team a peoples vote are completely united. We just want to get back to work and get back to campaigning fora to get back to work and get back to campaigning for a peoples vote, because this campaign doesnt belong to the people at the top, it belongs to the people at the top, it belongs to everything a staff member, every Civil Volunteer in every Single Person that was out on the streets marching for a peoples vote a couple of saturdays ago. Abbey tomlinson, labour activist and speaking up in behalf of the possibility of a peoples vote, thank you very much. We are going to go back to central lobby. Vicki young, our chief Political Correspondent is there, with a guest. That is right, we have moved on from one vote which has not gone through, so no general election on Boris Johnsons terms. Through, so no general election on borisjohnsons terms. The question now, can he get to that election through a different route, bringing ina through a different route, bringing in a short bill to go through the house of commons and the house of lords with the opposition parties to back that . Jo swinson from the liberal democrats, the liberal democrat leader, has been pushing foran democrat leader, has been pushing for an election on the 9th of december. She has just for an election on the 9th of december. She hasjust said for an election on the 9th of december. She has just said that actually she has rejected the idea ofa actually she has rejected the idea of a 12th of december election date, the one that borisjohnson will be putting forward. So who knows . Who knows where we are, but lets speak to Andy Mcdonald from labour who could hopefully tell us what labour might do. We are hearing from downing street that they are willing to not push through their Withdrawal Agreement bill between now and whenever parliament would be dissolved for an election. Does that make you more or less likely to decide whether to vote for that bill tomorrow . This is bizarre. Boris johnson won the second reading of his bill, so what should be happening now is he should be coming back with that bill for us to scrutinise it through the Committee Stage and take it through to the third reading, but there are Critical Issues contained in that. We have the trap door, the issue of the Customs Union, and obviously inextricably linked with that is the issue of a border down the arrow c, which we heard the dup last week, and they speak the truth. This is a really dangerous path to take, so we should have been talking about that, and of course we should have been talking about a confirmatory vote, a second referendum, which the liberal democrats appear to have abandoned without a care. Boris johnson said in the chamber that labour is running out of excuses trying to get out of a general election, accusing your party and your leader of running scared of the voters. You do seem to be coming up with different excuses as time goes on, and you have talked about taking no deal of the table. One way to do that is to have an election, Jeremy Corbyn becomes Prime Minister, you can take no deal of the table. But why on earth we have got a bill that has got through its second reading. You dont like that deal, you got called it a tory deal you dont want to back. That is why we want to amend it and deal with all the issues. Why not negotiate your own deal as the government . That is what we will do, general election, and we win the general election, we will go to the european union, but we have already indicated that the sensible, credible action that involves a Customs Union and a single market, would be acceptable to the european union, and we have said we will put that back to the people, let the people decide on the final say. You know people will watching this who we re know people will watching this who were thing, you are her majestys official opposition and you dont wa nt official opposition and you dont want a general election. I dont think most people can ever remember a time when this has happened. |j think most people can ever remember a time when this has happened. I do wa nt a time when this has happened. I do want a general election. I caution against having a general election on the 9th of december all the 12th of december, depending on which, the coalition seems to be falling out with themselves before it is informed. But to do that on the 12th of december, when we are asking a lot of elderly people that i go to, will you please consider a postal vote, she said, no, ilove will you please consider a postal vote, she said, no, i love to cast my vote, we are going to be asking them to go out to the polling stations in the of winter. We are going to be running the risk of thousands and thousands of students being disenfranchised. There were disenfranchised in 2016. Are we going to do it to them again . So yes, election what happens, whenever it happens, labour is ready, but this is an improper way to go about this is an improper way to go about this important business. 0k, thank you very much indeed. When we see the bill published, we will see if labour change their mind, and whether Boris Johnson labour change their mind, and whether borisjohnson is going to get to that election through another route. Vicki young in westminster, thank you so much. Here in the United States, democrats are applauding the raid which killed Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi, but have complained that russia and turkey we re complained that russia and turkey were given advance notice when congressional leadership was not. President trump defended his decision by saying he was afraid there would be leaks. Yesterday the president laid out in graphic detail how al baghdadi was killed saying he died like a dog and a coward. But he praised those who carried the operation. Us personnel were incredible. I got to watch much of it. No personnel were lost in the operation, while a large number of baghdadis fighters and companions were killed with him. He died after running into a dead end tunnel, whimpering and crying and screaming all the way. Joining us now is former us defense secretary william cohen. We just heard that donald trump describing the final moments of al baghdadi. What did you think about the language he used, was it notable to you at all . It is unusual for a present of the United States to use language which is certainly provocative. In professional sports, we dont allow taunting, and this was clearly taunting to the isis member saying, your leader, your fearless leader was full of fear, a coward, cut down like a dog, and thatis coward, cut down like a dog, and that is language trying to indicate to the isis followers that you have been following a false prophet. This has not been a strong courageous leader but a coward. And so it has its place certainly in terms of trying to degrade the image of al baghdadi, but in terms of whether or not it will provoke other remaining isis members to strike back, to say, well, if you think we are cowards, we will show you that we are not, so it runs that risk, but i think his goal was to try and diminish the image of a leader of isis who was the founder of that movement to show he really was a coward at last. But whether it has that in fact, we will have to wait and see. Was there a risk that it backfires, and actually as general petraeus was telling us earlier, that it would be something they can use when theyre doing recruitment online . Absolutely, and this is why i think restraint is always in order, the fact that he was taken down by our military, who demonstrated their power, precision, professionalism, the kind of training they do 24 7. Professionalism, the kind of training they do 24. Mr cohen, it is clive myrie here in london. You we re is clive myrie here in london. You were a republican serving under a democrat president as defence secretary. What do you make of these claims by democrats that they were not informed prior to this raid of what was going to happen, and and the turks were given advance notice . I think it is consistent with what the president is attempting to do, and that is to politicise the military. He has done this in the past, where he will grip go to a group of our soldiers, airmen, marines, and say that the democrats are not your friends. Marines, and say that the democrats are not yourfriends. It marines, and say that the democrats are not your friends. It is the republicans who are supporting a Strong Military. That is a very dangerous thing for him to do. It is one thing to politicise some of our other institutions, even though i have questions there, but the military is sacrosanct. It is nonpartisan, nonpolitical, and hear what the president is suggesting, i couldnt trust the leaders of the Democratic Party, they would leak this and you would be in jeopardy. Yet i trust vladimir putin, i trust the russians, but i dont trust you. This is his way of sending the signal that the democrats are not really supportive of Strong Military action, which is a falsehood, and i think that was his message and that was what he was trying to do. Secretary cohen, we are going to have to leave it there, thank you very much forjoining us. My pleasure. There is no question that this was a major success for mr trump, particularly given questions over hisjudgment some particularly given questions over his judgment some people suggested over the decision to pull troops out of North Eastern syria. I guess that av of North Eastern syria. I guess that as raid gave rise to a lot of euphoria on his part, but how quickly things can change where the American People are concerned, particularly when it came to their national pastime, baseball. So there, donald trump in the box with his wife and various other members of the Republican Party at the world series, watching the nationals play, the Hometown Team play, on the day of his greatest Foreign Policy victory so far, or success , Foreign Policy victory so far, or success, he was booed by the crowd. It highlights just how partisan politics have become even on this particular day. To california now, where the governor has declared a state of emergency as strong wildfires continue to spread. More than a Million People have already been left without electricity in the states biggest ever blackout. Around 200,000 people have had to evacuate an area north of San Francisco near the city of santa rosa and a separate fire in los angeles that started just north of the getty center arts museum early on monday morning has forced more than 10,000 people to evacuate their homes. That fire is burning close to major roads and some of the citys most expensive homes. Nba star lebron james and actor and former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger were among those forced to evacuate. Our correspondent sophie long is in los angeles and she joins us now. Sophie, how far away are you from the fires, and how far has it spread . I am just in the fires, and how far has it spread . I amjust in the Brentwood Hills in West Los Angeles at the moment. If i move out of frame a little bit, you can probably see the fire burning behind me, you can see the smoke coming up from the trees. There are flames down there. We have been here for the past hour or so, and watched as helicopters and planes have been fighting the fire from the air, dropping the reta rda nt. From the air, dropping the retardant. Just in the distance you can see the trees and houses, then thick smoke. That is the 405 freeway behind there, the only thing that is separating these flames from the mansions of bel air and the rest of the sprawling city of los angeles beyond. So people are very worried about the location of this fire. It is currently burning about 500 acres, which is tiny in comparison to other fires that are burning at the moment, particular that one in sonoma, that is still burning, that started on wednesday, and firefighters are still fighting at around the clock, but here in los angeles, the main priority at the moment is to get people out of their homes. They have been evacuation orders in place since the early hours of this morning. Most people are heeding the advice, but you listen to some people on the local radio who say, im going to stay, i think i can fight it. One los angeles politician said, if you are watching this news briefing on television, then you are an idiot, you need to get out, it is not safe. And most people understand that. People use to wildfires here, they have had terrible wildfires for the past two years, the worst in the state cosmic history last year that killed 86 people, so the priority here in los angeles is to people out of their homes. On the way we saw lots of people being evacuated and getting their animals to safety, their horses, meanwhile in sonoma cou nty their horses, meanwhile in Sonoma County firefighters continue to fight the fire that is now burning 66,000 acres, so it is a huge fire and still they are only a 5 containment. Sophie, thank you for that, sophie long in los angeles. Whilst it might seem at the moment on both sides of the atlantic that people are becoming increasingly entrenched in their opinion, at some points in our lives we do change our minds on things. Whether its making the decision to change careers or shifting our thoughts on a political issue. But how exactly do we do it . Well, many people would say you should sit down and go through the pros and cons and make a reasoned and rational decision. But in her new book stop being reasonable Eleanor Gordon smith argues that when it comes to finding out whats true or convincing others about what we know, being rational might involve our hearts as well as our minds. And shejoins us now. Thank you so much. This idea, people think you should logically make your case, and you will persuade people to your point of view, but you are saying that that is not true . This is not a new insight. This is an insight that goes back hundreds of years, that what we need to use as well as the traditional armoury of logic and reason and rational debate is something much more human and intimate that has to do with our emotions, and the ways that we see ourselves and the people that we see ourselves and the people that we see ourselves and the people that we love and the people we trust. What im arguing in this book for a series of case studies and interviews that i worked on is that not only are these things pragmatically useful in helping us change peoples mines, but they are actually philosophically important, tools that we often forget have not just a place but a legitimate place in our attempts to try to persuade people to find the truth. You say these are useful tools, but i guess in the moment, in the current environment, when you have got politics so partisan, whether were talking about here in the United States or in Great Britain or other parts of the world, why is it that we seem to have that art . parts of the world, why is it that we seem to have that art . I dont know that we have lost the art so much as we have started using it for more nefarious purposes. Very often when we think about Critical Thinking or how to reach people, what we are trying to do is reach people inside a particular environment, a broadcast environment that caters to what people already believe or even an entertainment environment where the act of changing someones mind is very often regarded as a kind of combat sport that we do on television for views or inflammatory content, and i think what that allows us to sideline is the significance of individual stories and of hearing from one particular person why they managed to change their mind, and that kind of return to a particular story is really what i try to do in the book, and try to do with these interviews, to try to serve as an antidote for precisely the enrolment you mention, which is one where we have a kind of persuasive fatigue. We try so often to change peoples mines on it so seldom works. Clive myrie here in london. It is not part of the problem, it is too easy for all of us to find those avenues of information that are akin to what we already want to believe in what we already want to believe in what we already know, and therefore it is just difficult to have an open mind, open up your mind to someone else . think that is totally the problem but it is also the problem which well meaning people cant necessarily do much about, until at least we start going back to First Principles and asking ourselves tough questions about what persuasion really involves. In the uk at the moment in the United States in many parts of the world, what we are seeing is environment not wear as you say people just get their information from environments they already trust, but where there isa they already trust, but where there is a whole apparatus, business, whole way of making money and personal brands which is all about sharing particularly inflammatory opinions, are not even inflammatory opinions, are not even inflammatory opinions, just the opinions we already agree with, and i think we have failed to reckon with the fact that our apparatus of changing peoples mines is not suited to that kind of very commercialised, very polarised environment. It is something that we need to update our r something that we need to update our weaponry if we were going to continue to exist in this way. Eleanor gordon smith, author of stop being reasonable, thank you for joining us on the programme. To some of the days at the news. Now, a bus ride in pennsylvania that gave commuters a whole new meaning to that monday morning sinking feeling. This bus was stopped at the traffic lights waiting for them to turn green when a sinkhole suddenly opened up in the street beneath it swallowing the entire back half of the bus into the earth. Luckily the bus only had one passenger on board at the time and both the driver and passenger were able to escape with the passenger only being treated for minor injuries. You can see the front end stuck up high in the air. A new seesaw. The morning commute will never be the same again. My word that is exactly what you get on a monday morning, not to be sneezed at coming up next on bbc world news, ros atkins is here with outside source and for viewers in the uk, i will have the latest headlines. Hello there. Apart from some hazy sunshine across southern parts of the country and a few showers peppering north and east coasts, it was a fine day with plenty of crisp autumn sunshine. The next few days, autumn sunshine. The next few days, a similar story, High Pressure, mainly dry with some sunshine, but it will be cold. Here is our area of High Pressure which brought the fine weather to many parts of the country today. These weather fronts associated with this low pressure continuing to very slowly making inroads northwards, introducing more cloud. Some patchy rain to the Channel Islands and into the south west of england, perhaps even into south wales as we head through the course of the night. Still one or two showers peppering northern and eastern coast, brought on by the north east breeze, but for most cold clear night, central and northern and Western Areas will have another widespread frost. Perhaps a little mist and fog around as well which will clear quite quickly, on tuesday looks pretty similar to how monday turned out, dry with plenty of still if you showers affecting north and east coasts, and showery in the south west, more of a breeze here too. So it will feel quite chilly because of that strengthening easterly wind, and as we head for a tuesday night, it looks like the cloud and the patchy rain spread a little further northwards. Across the north of the uk, it is another dry, clear, cold night, again with a widespread frost, but less cold in the south. High pressure pushes over towards the near continent as we head through wednesday, allowing low pressure head through wednesday, allowing low pressure and its weather to advance a little further northwards and eastwards, so it could be that many parts of wales, central and southern england, will see cloud, hazy sunshine further north, and also turning wet and windy for parts of northern ireland, certainly for wales in the south west, and some of that could be quite heavy. Dry across the far north where it will be chilly, 14 or 15 degrees in the south west, signs of milder air moving in. As we head into thursday, High Pressure retreats into the continent, allows low pressure to ta ke continent, allows low pressure to take over, pushes cloud and weather fronts across much of the uk. The mild airwill fronts across much of the uk. The mild air will slowly encroach across the country, although well still be quite cool across the north east, and while their more noticeable across england and wales, later this week it turns wetter at times with them while theyre moving in.
