The leaders of britains two biggest parties trade blows, ahead of next months election amid claims the conservatives are misleading voters. Good morning. Its 1 00am in london, 9 00am in singapore and in hong kong, where almost all of the protesters whod been barricaded inside a university have now left, with more than a thousand people arrested. Police and pro democracy activists have clashed over the past few days using tear gas and rubber bullets, and petrol bombs and bricks. The United Nations have urged the authorities to end the standoff peacefully. Rupert Wingfield Hayes reports from the campus. They came out looking more like prisoners of war hands on each others shoulders, forlorn, humiliated and exhausted. Family members looked on anxiously, hoping to catch a glimpse of a missing child. This man saw his brother, a man he says was only in the hong kong polytechnic to help negotiate, but he too is now in a police cell. How does that make you feel . Angry. Very. And. He wanted justice to come out in hong kong. Its one country, two systems. Its not china. Its the rule of law in hong kong. But now its being like china. Tonight, we managed to get inside the university, and this is the sight that greeted us. The detritus of sundays battle and the ammunition, ready for a battle yet to come. Whats this . Petrol ether. And another one. Ethyl acetate. So, this has all come from the universitys chemistry labs, it looks like, and has been used to make what was clearly being. Look at this, this is a bottle with a gas canister attached to it. Im not sure whether it would have actually worked, but the students here, the protesters here were preparing, you can see, for another full scale battle with the police. Tonight, maybe 50 protesters are Still Holding out here. They are portrayed in the media as the hardest of the hardcore, but this young man seemed more scared and lonely. He told me even his family has now turned against him. They blame the protesters and say they deserve this, he tells me. They even say its right for the police to shoot at protesters. When i hear this, its very tough, i feel very sad. Its clear none of the remaining protesters wants to stay. The steady trickle of surrenders has continued all evening, many too exhausted to go on. Then suddenly, as we watched, a group of about ten tried to make a run for it. Within seconds, the police were on them from all directions. They never really stood a chance. It appears this, or surrender, are now the only choices facing the few who remain inside. Rupert Wingfield Hayes, bbc news, in hong kong. And the us senate has passed a bill aimed at protecting human rights in hong kong. The legislation threatens to revoke hong kongs special status granted by washington, unless it retains sufficient autonomy from china. Lets take a look at some of the days other news. 106 people have died in iran during 5 days of protests, according to amnesty international. But the organisation believes the real number is much higher. Some reports suggest as many as 200 have died. Unrest broke out across the country following a sharp rise in petrol prices. Bbc persians Rana Rahimpour explains the background to the protests. Its partly a result of the sanctions, the president explained that there were three options, one is to sell more oil which is not civil under us sanctions, or to increase taxes or to reduce the subsidies, because the iranians fuel is heavily subsidised, it is very cheap to most of the countries in the region, and they decided the letter but that has triggered these nationwide protests, which according to iranians officials have been at least 100 cities. A top us official has told an impeachment inquiry that us President Donald Trump made inappropriate political demands of his ukrainian counterpart during a july phone call. The inquiry is investigating whether pressure was applied on ukraine to investigate democratic Candidatejoe Biden and his family in exchange for military aid. National security staffer leiutena nt colonel Alexander Vindman said he raised concerns about the call between the two president s, which he described as improper. The bbcs Aleem Maqbool has been following it all. Many are taking huge risks to testify against their president. For Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman, a military hero and National Security aid still working for the white house, those risks felt acute. Dad. Hands shaking as he gave his opening statement, he addressed his father who had fled soviet ukraine for a better life in the us. Do not worry, i will be fine for telling the truth. He was one of those who was on the crucial call between donald trump and his ukrainian counterpart and felt the need to report what hed heard. I was concerned by the call. What i heard was inappropriate and i have forwarded my concerns to mr eisenberg. It is improperfor the president of the United States to demand a Foreign Government investigate a us citizen and a political opponent. These hearings are about the accusation donald trump tied military aid to ukraine to the country opening investigations into the activities of hunter biden, son ofjoe biden. I just got to watch and the republicans are absolutely killing it, they are doing so well, because its a scam, its a big scam. Theyre doing something that the founders never thought possible and the founders didnt want, and theyre using this impeachment hoax for their own political gain. If you will you both please rise . But in todays hearings, we also heard from one of the key figures who steered Donald Trumps ukraine policy. At no time was i aware of or knowingly took part in an effort to urge ukraine to investigate former Vice President biden. As you know from the extensive real time documentation i have provided, Vice President biden was not a topic of our discussions. I was not on thejuly 25 phone call between President Trump and president zelensky. I was not made aware of any reference to Vice President biden or his son by President Trump until the transcript of that call was released on september 25, 2019. Were now into the second week of these public hearings with with much more testimony to come over the next couple of days but if social media is anything to go by, then supporters and opponents of donald trump are only becoming more entrenched in their views with very few americans changing their mind. Aleem maqbool, bbc news, washington. With just over three weeks to go until the uks general election, the leaders of britains two main Political Parties have clashed in the first televised debate. As anticipated, brexit dominated much of the discussion. The conservative Prime Minister, borisjohnson, repeatedly challenged the Opposition Labor Party leader, Jeremy Corbyn, to clarify his position on brexit. The labor leader said he would negotiate a new deal and present that to voters in a referendum. 0ur Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg reports. Tonight the conservative Prime Minister, borisjohnson, and the leader of the labour party, Jeremy Corbyn, debate. First, their chance at an opening pitch. Labour is offering real change and real hope. People want to get brexit done, and to unleash the potential of this entire country. I think its time that we actually recognise we have to maintain a firm and good trading relationship with europe, otherwise morejobs will be lost all over the country, as they have already been lost because of the uncertainty. We have a deal that, as i say, is oven ready. It is good to go. And it is approved, as i say, notjust by our partners in the eu, but by every one of the 635 conservative candidates, and it delivers everything that we wanted from brexit. Remember, the Prime Minister wants to leave injanuary, with his deal. Jeremy corbyn is offering you another referendum this deal, or leave with a different deal, or remain. Are you going to campaign for leave or remain . I want to bring people together. Therefore, there will be a referendum in which that decision will be made by the british people, and our government will abide by that decision. When you say you will get it done, really, mrjohnson, you are going to embark on probably seven years of negotiations with the United States on a trade deal. Be aware, this election could be a majorjunction for the uk. The tories rule out another referendum in scottish independence. Labour. Of course, Jeremy Corbyn and the labor party are going to do a deal, and they probably have already done a deal, with Nicola Sturgeon and the snp to form a corbyn sturgeon coalition. And the price of that deal, the price of Nicola Sturgeons support, she has made it absolutely clear, would be a second referendum on the union. I think i ought to be able to reply to this nonsense. Will you be able to reply. This nonsense of a coalition between labour and the snp. There is not going to be a coalition between labour and anybody else. There have been no deals that have been done, and there will be no deal that will be done. Does the truth matter in this election . I think it does, and i think its very important. I think its very important to hear from. I have been very clear about the deal i have done. Then, in the immediate aftermath of that interview, they were asked to step onto the minefield of the monarchy. Sue from leeds. Is the monarchy fit for purpose . Is Prince Andrew fit for purpose . Before we discuss Prince Andrew, i think we should discuss the victims that are there because of what has happened. I think all of our sympathies should be obviously with the victims ofjeffrey epstein, and the law must certainly take its course. The first duel over, weeks still to go in this campaign. But initial impressions for the two rivals for number ten they may well last. Here are the leaders of the liberal democrats and snp reacting to the debate. Arejust think what are just think what we had was the bluster and diversion from both of them that needed to be challenged, and whether that was on them each trying to excuse their record on anti semitism or, in the case of borisjohnson, trying anti semitism or, in the case of Boris Johnson, trying to anti semitism or, in the case of borisjohnson, trying to divert the question about racism onto brexit which i thought was very strange. They have just proved tonight that they are not up to the job. Whatever future scotland wants, should be decided here in scotland by the people of scotland, its not for Boris Johnson orJeremy Corbyn to dictate, and thats the issue at this election, are were going to let these westminster politicians and that failed system to determine what our country can become or are were going to take that descison into our own hands . There has also been a heavy criticism directed at the conservative party after rebranding one of its twitter accounts to look like an election Fact Checking agency. The account was renamed factcheckuk during the televised leaders debate, with no clear mention of its party connections. And in the last hour, twitter has issued a statement, warning that Decisive Action would be taken if there were any further attempts to mislead people in this way. You are watching newsday. Lets return to the ongoing unrest in hong kong. Im joined by vicky wong, the Political Editor of the coconuts news site in hong kong. What do you make of what we are seeing now, the final moments of Polytechnic University . We are still we have still got a number of people still in there, but do you think this has been successful, given that so many people are now in custody . It is really hard to say, at this point. As you mentioned, there are still probably about a dozen people still left inside the campus. It is hard to. It is really ha rd to campus. It is hard to. It is really hard to say. I mean, i imagine that they are probably not going to leave without at least putting up a fight. Im not sure if you see there were dramatic scenes of people trying to make a run for it on campus, but then riot police ended up arresting them anyway. But we believe that i feel that whoever is still left in there, they are going to be arrested and subsequently charged with rioting, which here carries a maximum penalty of ten years in jail. What do you make, how do you describe, the way that the protesters have conducted themselves . Because we have seen the level of ammunition that they have had, that they carried on onto that campus with them. They were really well armed. Yes, whats been interesting about this Polytechnic University siege is that it is a departure from a tactic that protesters have used before. I think you might remember that months ago one of the reasons why these protest had lasted or endured as long as they have was because they employed this tactic called b water, which means keep moving and try not to occu py means keep moving and try not to occupy the same spot for too long be water. Yet in the Polytechnic University case, we have students sticking to one spot and guarding it very heavily. And what do you make of the reaction from the police . Because they have been removing people, they have been taking them into custody. These people are arrested. Do they have any other choice in how they behave . Arrested. Do they have any other choice in how they behave . |j arrested. Do they have any other choice in how they behave . I it is very different. I feel like a lot of people feel that the Hong Kong Police are now at the point where they dont really care about the optics and dont really care what things. You know, how the International Media or how the world kind of perceives their actions, if that makes any sense. So in that case, what happens next . What. Youve got, as you said, a dozen or so youve got, as you said, a dozen or so people still within that building. But realistically, what is the next stage of this . Because the devastation has been on a massive scale. What is next for this movement . Its this movement has been going on for almost half a year now, and it does feel like there is now, and it does feel like there is no end in sight. And you have to remember that one of the slogans being chanted at protest sites is five key demands, not one less, and one of those demands is the withdrawal of the extradition bill, which is what kickstarted the protests in the first place. Although that has been met, protesters still feel like they need the other demands. And one of them is an independent enquiry into Police Conduct and Police Brutality against protesters. And the government havent given any sign that they are willing to give way on that. I feel, from that they are willing to give way on that. Ifeel, from speaking that they are willing to give way on that. I feel, from speaking to some protesters, that if they at least conceded on that demand, then things would possibly die down. With regards to, just very briefly, vicki, the new police chief, do you have any thoughts that he may be able to restore order . It is a very. He has got a very difficult job ahead of him. I do feel like, even under the new police chief, that the protests will still continue, and the new police chief is chris tang, who is known for having a bit of a hard stance against protesters, so i dont think it is going to change. Thank you so much for your time. Land mines kill or injure an average of four afghans every day. The bands two surviving members, Roger Daltrey and pete townshend, posed by their plaque after the unveiling. Hello there. It was a very cold start to tuesday. Widespread frost up start to tuesday. Widespread frost up and down the country, particularly across scotland, far north of england. Now, for this morning, its not going to be quite as cold to start. Thats because we have had more of a breeze, and variable amounts of cloud as well. There still a few chilli spots across the north and east of the country, where a few clear spells linger. But further west we will have more of a breeze, and these weather fronts bring thicker cloud, outbreaks of rain, affecting parts of south west england, through the day. Maybe western wales, along samarra seacoast, northern ireland, affecting western scotland at times. They could just be the odd shower, as well, running into the eastern coast of england stopped perhaps into northeast scotland, but most places will be dry. Variable cloud, some spells of sunshine. Again, another chilly day to come, the quietest cold across western areas. 1011 degrees. As we had to wednesday night, it says mainly dry again for much of the country. Variable cloud, quite a breeze blowing, so as not going to be quite as cold again, with loads down to one to three degrees. But generally, for many, four and five, and certainly a little bit milder than that for the west. Where we have the cloud in the rain. Thursday, similar picture. We will continue with this weather front across western areas, bring outbreaks of rain. The odd heavier bestseller to the south west, but generally late and patchy. Elsewhere, variable cloud, some sunny spells, and a bit more fat around on thursday. Temperature was, again, single figures for most, but nine, maybe ten across the south. Some subtle changes we had on into friday. Looks like this where the front may put a little bit further north and eastwards across the country, so it could be a cloudier day still, with outbreaks of rain moving across northern england, into parts of scotland. Further south, we may see some sunshine developing, and a rush of heavy showers following on into friday afternoon, into the evening, particularly in the south west. Temperatures coming up the south west. Temperatures coming up on the south, as well. Ten and 11 degrees quite widely. Still a cooler feel across the north, but even here, eight and feel across the north, but even here, eightand nine. Then, as we head on into the weekend, looks like area of low pressure will scout southern parts of the uk. The weather front may spread northwards, introducing a band of rain, and then we look to the west. This next area of low pressure, which could bring more widespread, wet and windy weather as we had through the latter pa rt weather as we had through the latter part of the weekend into the start of next week. But you will notice the orange colour is really taking over, so it really will be quite mild as we end the week, although it will be turning more and more u nsettled, will be turning more and more unsettled, with rain spreading too many areas. It will be quite windy as well. Those temperatures reaching the low teens celsius, particularly across england and wales. Hello, im kasia madera with bbc world news.
