If the labour party wins power. Ido i do not blame the nurses, i do not blame the doctors, i do not blame the health service, i blame a government that has underfunded our nhs. Tonight 5pm, imjane hill. A doctor has been found guilty tonight a doctor has been found guilty of multiple counts of Sexual Assault against 23 female patients in one of the worst cases of a gp abusing his patients in real recent times. Manish shah, who practice as agpin times. Manish shah, who practice as a gp in east london convinced patients as young as 17 to have unnecessary intimate examinations for his own sexual gratification. Manish shah, who is 50, will be sentenced in february. This report from our health editor. Patients thought their gp was trusting and caring. But dr manish shah was found to have breached that trust. He was found guilty of Sexual Assaults on six patients, after similar verdicts concerning i7 others at a previous trial, which couldnt be reported at the time. Hed carried out vaginal and breast examinations, which were unnecessary and in breach of medical guidelines. Some of his victims gave evidence at the trial. He would say, like, you know, you need to have, Sexual Health tests to make sure youre safe. You never whether somebody goes with somebody else, even though you might have a safe partner. He wasjust encouraging the tests along and i didnt think nothing of it. I thought if a doctor suggests it you pretty much go along with it. He just duped so many people, you know, he used our weaknesses, ourfears, and just took complete advantage. But not one time did i actually think he was doing anything untoward. The court heard that the experience of the celebrity jade goody, who died with cervical cancer, had been mentioned to patients by dr shah as a reason for having smear tests. The prosecution said dr shah had exploited the fears of patients about cancer and with a sexual motive. One was aged 17. Hed falsely noted in medical records that patients had requested the examinations. Dr shah worked at this east london practise. One of his patients reported him to the Practice Management in 2013. The police were called in, and he was suspended from working as a gp. Police sources have indicated this is one of the biggest cases of its kind involving one doctor. It raises questions about the oversight of gp practices. A lawyer has told the bbc he intends to start civil legal action seeking compensation on behalf of some former patients. It seems astonishing to my clients he was able to behave this way for so many years without anyone raising questions. We know he was in practise for a number of years, that these assaults continued over a number of years, so they have to answer that question as to why questions were not raised internally. Sentencing of dr shah will take place in february. Hugh pym, bbc news, at the old bailey. Lets talk a little bit more to malcolm underhill, who we saw briefly in that report. He is a solicitor representing a number of women who say they also were assaulted by manish shah. Hejoins me via webcam. Good evening. Your reaction to todays verdicts, firstly . Clearly, it is a very satisfactory outcome for those who have given evidence this afternoon. But not only those for my clients and others who have been affected by the inappropriate behaviour of doctor shah, who managed to get away with these intimate examinations and salts over far too many years. Explain to us in more detail why you therefore want to bring civil charges in this case . My clients wa nt charges in this case . My clients want justice. They want to charges in this case . My clients wantjustice. They want to be listened to. They want to be heard. They want it to be acknowledged that they too were assaulted by dr shah. Their ultimate pursuit is to secure compensation. But they want admissions for what went on and they wa nt a nswe rs admissions for what went on and they want answers as to why this was allowed to go on for so many years, without the practice noting what dr shah was doing. Because it seems to be farfrom shah was doing. Because it seems to be far from satisfactory that dr shah was able to conduct these kind of examinations over so many years against so many patients without any eyebrows being raised internally. I think the surgery have got a lot of questions to answer as to exactly how he was able to manipulate individuals and get away with his terrible assaults. In broad terms, terms of a gp surgery and how they function, what sort of additional safeguards do you believe could or should be in place . We know that dr shah persuaded some of his patients to come in early, when other members of staff were not around, or not so many of staff were not around, or not so ma ny staff of staff were not around, or not so many staff were around. We know there were some concerns raised by other members of staff about that. We need clear rules about when gps can meet with patients. Not automatically outside of automatic gp hours without some kind of oversight. Secondly, there is the issue of chaperones. We know that dr shah did invite patients to have a chaperone and that on occasions there were chaperones in the consulting room. But the difficulty is that those chaperones do not know exactly what dr shah was doing at the time. They were simply another individual in the room. They did not know whether the actions taken by dr shah were justified or not. What we got to do, weve got to have an overview, a review, of the way in which chaperones are used and whether or not the individuals in the room are appropriate to be there. Clearly, we need someone with there. Clearly, we need someone with the medical knowledge to know whether or not dr shah was doing was indeed correct. Malcolm underhill, many thanks for your time. Thank you. We will turn to the election. Two days before the general election, borisjohnson and Jeremy Corbyn have been trying to focus their campaigns on what they see as vote winning issues for their parties. For labour, the emphasis has been on funding for the nhs but the partys Health Spokesman has had to insist that a secret recording of him apparently criticising Jeremy Corbyn was simply ba nter. For the conservatives, borisjohnson has warned a Hung Parliament would mean more uncertainty about brexit. Heres our Political Correspondent, chris mason. The last slog towards election day is under way. Jeremy corbyn in blackrod outside manchester. All the parties want to talk up what they see as their key messages. And well hear from Jeremy Corbyn in a moment. But, first, stuff happens in elections. A private chat between a shadow cabinet minister and a friend, whos a conservative activist is leaked, and the labour front bencher is candid about his partys prospects. I mean, going round these national places, its dire for labour. It is dire. And my strategy is to try to help as many of my colleagues back over the line. Erm, ive been banging on about the nhs in their areas for them. But its awful for them. And it is. Its a combination of corbyn and brexit. Mr ashworth insists it has been selectively leaked. Look, right. Is this great . No. I look stupid, i know i do. You dont believe a word of what you said. Im trying to wind him up, right . And the reason this has come out today is because the tories know that the crisis in the nhs is ruining their campaign. A pointJeremy Corbyn wanted to focus on. Weve now got until thursday night to win this election, thursday night to save the nhs, thursday night to End Child Poverty in britain, homelessness in britain, thursday night to build the houses that we need, thursday night to get a government you can trust that will actually represent you. Labour are emphasising the nhs following a bumpy day for the Prime Minister yesterday after a four year old boy was pictured apparently asleep on a hospitalfloor in leeds, because there was no bed for him. Demand in the nhs continues to grow. We have seen that since its foundation. The founding assumption of the nhs was with increasing provision, demand would drop, but the opposite has been true. We have seen demand increase. But what we have is a very targeted and structured programme that has been agreed with nhs england to make important investments in places like leeds. At this stage in the campaign with a couple of days to go, its about the parties playing their greatest hits. Its no time for obscure album tracks. Enter the liberal democrats with their big pitch on brexit. We need to run the best, the biggest, the hardest operation we have ever run to get those liberal democrat votes out, knocking on tens of thousands of doors, in each and every one of our target seats, to make sure that we can stop Boris Johnson getting a majority and leading us to a crash out brexit. The snps big plan is scottish independence, of course, but in the short term, their message is similar to the liberal dems. If scotland votes snp, we can make sure we looked Boris Johnson out of government. We can find an escape route from the mess of brexit and crucially we can put scotlands future into scotlands and so we can get on with the job of building a better, brighter future. Thats the choice that people have on thursday. The noisy dash to move in here and run the country for up to five years is nearing its end. Chris mason, bbc news. Our Political Correspondent alex forsyth is on the conservative battle bus and joins us now from north wales. Wearing your seat belt im glad to see, alex. Bring us up to date with campaigning where you are. The Prime Minister had a pretty turbulent day on the campaign trail yesterday so the focus of the day feels like an attempt to bring things back on track, rest the narrative onto their central message, which is, of course, that brexit. This afternoon, we had Boris Johnson course, that brexit. This afternoon, we had borisjohnson giving a speech at the jcb factory in staffordshire. Before he did that, he took part in a stunt, photo where he drove a digger through a polystyrene wall which had the word gridlock daubed on the outside of it. He knocked that through on a jcb machine which had the words get brexit done, that Central Campaign message on the very front. Perhaps, unsurprisingly, when he gave his speech a few minutes later, there was one very clear central theme. And that was what he would do if he was Prime Minister, compared to whatJeremy Corbyn might do if he was to get into power. This is what Boris Johnson had to say to supporters at thejcb johnson had to say to supporters at the jcb factory a little earlier. This is a momentous occasion for our country. We have and i have never known an election like it, never known an election like it, never known an election like it, never known a moment when the choice before us was so clear and so stark. And i urge you all to think about it very, very hard. We have 48 hours to end the deadlock, 48 hours to end the gridlock, the. Im thinking of another word. The gridlock, the. Im thinking of anotherword. Deadlock, gridlock. Roadblock 48 hours. 48 hours to get rid of the roadblock thatis hours to get rid of the roadblock that is in the part of this country. And youve seen how we can do it, literally and figuratively. We can do it, you can do it. You can do it with your votes. With your support, we can end the gridlock that is holding our country back. We can move forward together. That was borisjohnson earlier. Move forward together. That was Boris Johnson earlier. I move forward together. That was borisjohnson earlier. I gather your battle bus has been hit by something. We have a roadblock of oui by something. We have a roadblock of our own, people protesting against climate change, dressed up as bee. They did it to the liberal democrat bus and one of the brexit party buses and a brexit party office in grimsby, some of the bees appeared in. They are part of the Extinction Rebellion protest movement and they have seemingly stuck themselves to the front of this bus, so we are stalled. We have been, for a while. The police are in attendance, trying to unstick the bees. Mrjohnson isnt on this bus but on a day where he had hoped everything to stay very firmly on track with only a very short time before people go to the polls, not sure he will love the bees protest although borisjohnson will try to keep brexit his central message for the rest of the day. Alex, for now, you may be some time i guess, thanks for now. Lets assess what is going on in the labourcamp. Our Political Correspondent jess parker is on the labour battle bus and joins us now. Yes, you join me in a yes, youjoin me in a pub in carlisle. A short while ago, this entire pub was completely packed with supporters and activists of Jeremy Corbyn. He held a something ofa Jeremy Corbyn. He held a something of a rally, pretty much speaking from where i am sat right now, addressing the crowds. The whole thing was moved indoors because the weather up in cumbria isnt particularly good at the moment. Addressing those crowds, he talked about labour because my plans and investment in Public Services and climate change. Of course, one of theissues climate change. Of course, one of the issues that has presented itself today for the labour party is that a secret recording of the Shadow Health secretary, jon ashworth. Jon as hworth health secretary, jon ashworth. Jon ashworth has dismissed it as banter but it was published on the guido fawkes website in whichjon ashworth talks about the situation for labour in the midlands and the north being dire and abysmaland in the midlands and the north being dire and abysmal and some voters cant stand Jeremy Corbyn. A short while ago, we asked the labour leaderfor his reaction onjon ashworths comments. Leaderfor his reaction onjon ashworths comments. This is guido fawkes tapping into a private bit of banter between two old friends. Ive had a chat with jon ashworth, he called me straightaway. He is out there, campaigning fora called me straightaway. He is out there, campaigning for a Labour Government, he is out there defending our National Health service and jon has my full support and im cool with jon, service and jon has my full support and im cool withjon, we get on great. When he said the situation in some areas for labour was abysmal and dyad sums voters cant stand you, that was just banter . Abysmal and dire you, that was just banter . Abysmaland dire and you, that was just banter . Abysmal and dire and some. You, that was just banter . Abysmal and dire and somem you, that was just banter . Abysmal and dire and some. It was like reverse psychology banter, foot ball like reverse psychology banter, football supporters when the opposite person sang about their party. It got out of hand. It is not the kind of stuff i would do, its not the way i would talk to anybody butjon has called me and made it very clear. Jon has been a fantastic shadow secretary of health and exposed what this government is doing and exposed what this government is doing and i expect guido fawkes is keen to take debate away from the state of the National Health service and onto this. This is irrelevant. The issue is children being treated oii the issue is children being treated on the floors of hospitals, 4 Million People waiting for operations. As you can hear, the labour leader saying that he believes that these comments from the Shadow Health secretary, jon ashworth, which, as we understand it, were from over a week ago, just reverse psychology banter. More broadly, Jeremy Corbyn has been travelling up the country. He was starting off the last three days of the campaign in bristol, yesterday. And then he has moved his way up along the west coast, talking to people at doing visits and rallies in various seats, tory marginals, labour marginals and often really trying to do what he was doing a while ago, to talk about labours policy is best to try to encourage activists for those last few days of campaigning ahead of polling day, trying to motivate them. Because, of course, one of the things that all the parties are trying to do is reach those core undecided voters that could prove crucial in this election. Of course, asjeremy, makes his way up through the north, he will come into many areas in the midlands and the north, which voted for brexit. Whilst he has always been quite keen throughout this campaign to talk about the nhs, Public Services, of course, one of those tensions for the labour party has been the conservatives really trying to eat into their traditional labour vote in leave areas. Some people having been critical of labours policy. Of course, Jeremy Corbyns stars is that he would remain neutral, should a Labour Government come to power stance. And put a labour deal remain versus the deal within six months of government. Thanks. Lets take a look at some of todays other election news. The green party has promised to deliver what it calls justice for students by scrapping tuition fees. In a speech in london, its deputy leader, amelia womack, said the party would write off existing student debt. She said education should be free for life for everyone. The brexit party leader, nigel farage, says he believes he can get some of his candidates over the line in thursdays election. Hes urged leave voters in some labour held seats, which he claims will be very unlikely to vote conservative to vote tactically and back the brexit party. And back the brexit party. He also renewed his criticism of borisjohnsons brexit deal, saying it would lead to years of agonising negotiations. Tonight, leaders from the parties of scotland and Northern Ireland will go head to head in two separate debates being aired on the bbc. The scotland Leaders Debate begins at 8pm on bbc one in scotland and wherever you are in the country you can watch it on the bbc news channel. And in Northern Ireland, the Leaders Debate starts at 9pm on bbc one in Northern Ireland, and you can see it on the bbc news channel at midnight. The headlines on bbc news a doctorfrom romford has been found guilty of 25 Sexual Offences against six patients. 50 year old manish shah convinced patients to have unecessary checks and carried out invasive intimate examinations. In a crucial day of campaigning, borisjohnson warns of a Hung Parliament if voters dont support the conservatives. Meanwhile, Jeremy Corbyn promises a relentless focus on the nhs if the labour party wins power. In the sport, all eyes are onjurgen Klopps Liverpool as the holders could go out of the Champions League today. Chelsea also need a win to secure their place in the knockout stages. More on those stories later. We turn our attentions to new zealand. Six people are now known to have died on white island and eight are missing presumed dead after the volcanic eruption in new zealand. 31 people are being treated in hospital, among them two british women. Most of the injured have suffered at least 30 burns. Dozens of people were exploring new zealands most active volcano at the time of the eruption, and questions are being asked about why they were allowed to, given that seismologists had raised the alert level just a few weeks ago. More than 10,000 people visit the privately owned island every year. Russell fuller reports. Steam continues to rise from the crater of new zealands most active volcano. And on white island, images from one of the first helicopters on the scene reveal a white blanket of ash. The rescue operation is now one of recovery. Many of those saved were badly injured when the volcano erupted, and today those who came to their aid have been telling their stories. Immediately, the crew of the boat launched the inflatables and started picking up the injured. We didnt know what we were dealing with until the first ones started coming on, and as they came on, um, they were horrific burns, and everyone. We took 23 people off the island before we started heading back to mainland. Every single one of them were badly, badly burned. New zealands Prime Minister, jacinda ardern, visited the injured and thanked those members of the Emergency Services who were first to respond. It was like. Like, ive seen the chernobyl mini series, there was just. Everything wasjust blanketed in ash. It was quite um. Quite an. An overwhelming feeling. There was a helicopter on the island that had obviously been there at the time. They were pretty poorly. Obviously difficult to see specific details but covered in ash, looking quite badly burned. Obviously requiring transport by helicopter meant they were very sick anyway, so. They were in fairly serious condition. As hearses arrive to pick up the bodies of some of the victims, an investigation into the tragedy has begun, although police say it is still too early to confirm whether it will be criminal in nature. Tipene maangi, a 23 year old tour guide from new zealand who was called in to work on his day off, is among the missing. Hes a wonderful boy, hes an awesome kid, tipene. Everyone knows him, hes well known on the coast, from the small babies right through to the kaumatuas, he can walk in all those worlds. Hard case, can sing. Very talented. Very talented boy. The local community has been paying its respects to those who lost their lives. The focus is now on those injured and bereaved, and questions are being asked about whether anyone should have been on the island in the first place. The alert level was raised in november, because of an increase in volcanic activity, but a direct threat to visitors was not envisaged. Today, though, all was quiet in whakatane as people mourn those lost across the sea. Russell fuller, bbc news. Senior democrats in the us house of representatives have formally announced that two articles of impeachment or charges will be brought against President Trump. Hes accused of abusing his power by pressing ukraine to interfere in the 2020 president ial election, and obstructing congress. Lets get more on this, we can speak to our washington correspondent gary odonoghue. He has been following this from the beginning. A sense of what this later stage means . Well, i suppose, finally, here it is, the point of no return, if you like, for the democrats in terms of the impeachment process. They have publish their articles of impeachment, charges to you and me. Those two key charges on the question of abuse of power and the obstruction of congress. Those will be voted on later this week. Here is the chairman of the Housejudiciary Committee explaining why they have decided to finally go for it. The first article is for abuse of power. It is an impeachable offence for the president to exercise the powers of his Public Office to obtain an improper, personal benefit while ignoring or injuring the national interest. That is exactly what President Trump did when he solicited and pressured ukraine to interfere in our 2020 president ial election. Thus damaging our national security, undermining the integrity of the next election and violating his oath to the american people. These actions moreover, are consistent with President Trumps previous invitations of foreign interference in our 2016 president ial election. And when he was caught, when the house investigated, and opened an impeachment enquiry, President Trump engaged in unprecedented, categorical and indiscriminate defiance of the impeachment inquiry. This gives rise to the second article of impeachment for obstruction of congress. The president has rejected this claim and he has called it a witchhunt, once again, as he has a lwa ys witchhunt, once again, as he has always called these things. In fact, the Trump Campaign has described it as rank partisanship, this whole process of impeachment. Here is the minority leader in the house of representatives, the body that will actually get to vote on these charges sometime next week. This is kevin mccarthy. Back in 2016 the democrats called those who supported donald trump deplorables and now they are trying to disqualify their votes. Democrats still cannot get over the fact that the president won the election and they lost. Just la st the election and they lost. Just last week, at this podium, nancy pelosi went to point out they created a timeline to impeach President Trump that she said started two and a half years ago. Many of you know of this time i because once they took the majority, they had to decide who would become chairs of their committee was that the Impeachment Committee judiciary, who could win. Gerry nadler campaigned on that he would be the very strongest member to lead a potential impeachment. There will be a vote at the end of this week to stop it will then go to the floor of the house of representatives, where the house of representatives, where the democrats have a healthy majority. It will go through there and we are expecting a trial in the senate after christmas. In order to be removed from office, the president would need to have two thirds of the senate vote against him, and republicans are in the majority. It is not very likely to happen but, my goodness, it is going to bea happen but, my goodness, it is going to be a spectacle. Indeed. Very interesting. Thank you very much for now foster lets have a look at the weather. It has been another vet and windy picture again across the uk today. Some places have clocked up over 40 mil metres of rain. The International Court ofjustice in the hague has heard some of the opening arguments accusing myanmar of genocide against its Muslim Rohingya minority. Myanmars de facto leader, the nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, attended the proceedings, where lawyers acting on behalf of the gambia, the country which brought the case, on behalf of dozens of muslim countries, described graphic witness accounts of mass murder, torture and rape by burmese soldiers. Ina in a moment, we will hear much more analysis on this. Our correspondent nick beake has more on the background of the case. The world used to see this woman as a symbol of peace and human rights. Cheering Aung San Suu Kyi even won a Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to bring democracy to myanmar. Now, shes the civilian leader and shes fighting charges that the country, on her watch, has committed genocide. Its hard to get your head round just what an incredible turnaround this is. For nearly 20 years, on and off, Aung San Suu Kyi was kept under house arrest here in the city of yangon by the brutal military dictatorship. Now, though, shes standing up for the same army, which took away her freedom, and even trying to justify its actions to the world. This is what its accused of targeting and killing the Rohingya Muslim minority. Un experts say myanmars army acted with genocidal intent when, in 2017, troops forced out more than 740,000 rohingya. These refugees tell horrific stories of rape and murder, and theyre still trapped in camps across the border in bangladesh. Then this happened. This tiny West African Muslim country, the gambia, brought a case against myanmar at the United Nations top court, the International Court ofjustice. Its doing this on behalf of dozens of other muslim countries. They want the court to issue an emergency ruling to protect the rohingya from further harm. But myanmar rejects all allegations of genocide. The army, which still holds enormous power, insists it was only clearing out those it calls terrorists, and that, really, the rohingya are illegal immigrants. Justice for the rohingya is still a long way off, even with this court case. And thats because the icj has no way of enforcing a ruling against myanmar, and there is no International Police force to protect the rohingya from further abuse. Neither Aung San Suu Kyi nor the generals would automatically be arrested and put on trial. But it could lead to sanctions against myanmar, damaging an economy only just finding its feet after military rule. Nick beake, bbc news, yangon. With me now is tin htar swe, myanmar analyst and former editor of the bbc burmese service. Lets discuss the implications of what is being heard at the hague. Thank you so much for coming in. Lets start with uncensored and key herself. She did not actually need to go to the hague, as i understand it. To go to the hague, as i understand it. Aung san suu kyi. To go to the hague, as i understand it. Aung san suu kyi. Well, everybody was surprised that she decided to appear in front of the court. It is very important, very significant stop so, the narrative from the government aside, her government, is that this is to give her a chance to tell the world what exactly is happening in the western pa rt exactly is happening in the western part of burma, where the rohingya population where there once. Now they have fled to the neighbouring country, bangladesh. Uncensored key would chance to tell the world what exactly chance to tell the world what exa ctly ha d chance to tell the world what exactly had ta ken chance to tell the world what exactly had taken place. The western governments do not understand as a terrorist element and she has a chance to tell the world. That is what the government is hoping to do. So, her presence and the reasoning that she is going to be laying out, that she is going to be laying out, thatis, that she is going to be laying out, that is, are you saying, for domestic consumption . I will come to the international reputation, but thatis the international reputation, but that is for domestic consumption . M is, yes because once she has decided, she and instead, rather suddenly, when gambia decided to ta ke suddenly, when gambia decided to take myanmar to court. She decided that she will be going to represent the country. Suddenly, the whole country was ta ken the country. Suddenly, the whole country was taken aback by it, especially the military. But since then, the country have been holding rallies to support her. So, her popularity has increased and also she has been seen by the population, do mystically, as a very heroic act, that the leader is doing. This is a domestic political manoeuvring by Aung Sun Suu Kyi, anyway. In the run up to an election, a year or so away. Elections are happening in 2020, by this time of next year. And people watching this will probably have vivid memories of the desperate images, all the stories we talked about at great length, about what happened to the wrong gal. Absolutely terrifying. We saw it there. What happened to the row hinge. We saw a little of it there. Is her argument that those reports are wrong, misleading . There are those that will say the case is overwhelming. The evidence is overwhelming. The evidence is overwhelming that there is a question as to whether she realises that these evidence are there. When the United Nations did a fact finding mission, the report came out, it was very extensive report. They rejected out rightly. They thought the un has an agenda and there under the influence of islamic countries, so on and so forth. All along the miami government has been denying all the investigation done by the un and also by the Human Rights Watch is. And the fact that Aung Sun Suu Kyi herself, of course, as we cannot forget, has been held in such remarkable regard by people in this country, people all over the world, does. Does her international reputation, is she factoring that in at all . Is that even relevant . Are we seeing this from a wrong perspective . For her, this is about a domestic agenda . Perspective . For her, this is about a domestic agenda . |j perspective . For her, this is about a domestic agenda . I am not sure what she is thinking, but i think her priority is to remain in power, because she has been in powerfor only four years and she feels that there are a lot more to do, and she likes to be in powerfor another five years. The International Community has been now condemned her for not using her moral authority for not using her moral authority for but then, i think her priority, or many people feel that what she is trying to do is trying to make sure that she has enough support to win the next elections. By winning the next elections, then she can do what she has promised, that is to turn the country into a more democratic country, by changing the constitution. With the support from the military. Now, by coming to the court, she has, to some extent, leveraged over the military. Very, very interesting to talk to you thank you so much for your time tonight. We may well be speaking again as this progresses at the hague. Thank you very much for your time this evening. The ministry of defence is to return a long service and Good Conduct Medal to a falklands veteran who had it removed because of his sexuality. Joe ousalice served in the navy for 18 years, but was discharged in 1993 because of a ban on gay people serving in the armed forces. The mod has admitted its policy was wrong, discriminatory and unjust. Daniela relph reports. This is a significant victory forjoe ousalice. It wasnt just about getting his medals back, it was about personal pride and restoring a reputation. He joined the navy in the 1970s when there was a ban on lgbt people serving. His military career had been blighted by what he felt was a campaign to force him out because of his sexuality. By hook or by crook, every two years they dragged me in. On one occasion i came back from two and a half years with a nato fleet, i hadnt been back in the uk for two and a half years, and yet the day i got back in they claimed theyd seen me in a pub in portsmouth doing drugs. Now, ive never touched drugs in my life, but this shows you the level of what they get up to. Joe served in the falklands war, did six tours of duty in Northern Ireland and was posted to conflict zones in the middle east. But after being forced to disclose his sexuality, he was discharged from the navy, his medals cut from his uniform. Its taken 26 years to get them back. We are very, very glad, obviously, that theyve settled this claim, they are going to givejoe his medal back and, most importantly in some ways, joe has ensured that they are also going to introduce a policy whereby other lgbt veterans can also apply to have their medals back as well. In a statement, the ministry of defence said. Butjoe would now like something more personalfrom the navy. Id like. An apology from somebody in high authority. It was a rear admiral who gave me the medal, it was an admiral who took the medal off me, so id like it from somebody of equal importance. The mod hope thatjoe will have his medals returned by christmas. Daniela relph, bbc news. Millions more people around the world will be exposed to coastal flooding every year by the end of the century, if greenland continues to lose ice at its current rate. Thats a new warning from scientists who say greenland is losing ice seven times faster than during the 1990s a rate of ice loss thats in line with the gloomiest projections about what will happen if the world doesnt tackle greenhouse warming. The findings, published in thejournal nature, show greenland has lost 3. 8 trillion tonnes of ice since 1992. Thats enough to push global sea levels up by 10. 6 millimetres. This would see 40 million more people around the world exposed to coastal flooding by the end of the century. Our science correspondent Jonathan Amos is in San Francisco and can tell us more. That is a gloomy list of statistics i have just read that is a gloomy list of statistics i havejust read out. What are scientists saying . Well, i am afraid, yes, scientists saying . Well, iam afraid, yes, we scientists saying . Well, i am afraid, yes, we are on projections that are gloomy, that are pessimistic. If years ago, we had an idea of where sea levels would go in the coming years. But if you look back at the satellites, as this group is done, they have gone back over more than 25 years, and you follow the line, you look at the acceleration in milk, it appears that we are on the upper level projections going into the future. In milton. That means that come the end of the century, we are going to get one metre, may be more, of sea level rise. One metre, yes, that isa sea level rise. One metre, yes, that is a lot, but consider this. Over the past 25 years, they have had a centimetre of rise just from greenland. For every one centimetre additional that you put on sea levels, you bring in 6 million extra people around the globe into a flooding risk. That gives you some idea of what we are facing as we go into the future. What do they say about what should be done therefor . Is there anyway in which this can be minimised . There is a lot of reports that come out of this meeting that i am at the American Geophysical union meeting, the largest annual gathering of earth scientists. They have a lot of gloomy reports that come out about the state of the planet. The thing is, they are just scientists. All they can do is put the data out there, put the facts in front of the policymakers. Those policymakers, gathered at this moment in madrid, in spain, at the annual climate conference. It is time to them to ta ke conference. It is time to them to take these facts and turn them into policy that is what they have been asked to do under the paris climate agreement, but, as our correspondence there will tell you, they are struggling to set down the rules that would enable paris to do its thing. So, yes, you can talk to the scientists but, in many ways, you need to go to madrid and ask the politicians, what are you going to do about it . Yes, jonathan, thank you very much, with the latest in San Francisco. Look at a few other stories here this evening. Local businesses knew something was going on but werent sure it was a banksy until yesterday. Banksy has really good ideas. I like his art, his thinking behind his art, theres always a thought behind his pictures. Its a lovely. Lovely idea. The red noses werent on the original piece, someone jumped over the barriers last night and sprayed them on. Whatever you think of the red nose additions to the original artwork, network rail have decided they need to put up some clear plastic to protect it from any further potential street artists. Banksy says that while they were filming with the homeless man, ryan, passers by kept offering him drinks and help. Rough sleepers regularly sleep at the station. For us, it touches a really. Really poignant point for birmingham. And i think that was the intention anyway, of his artwork. So it needs to be saved . So it needs to be saved. The clear plastic glass will protect it from further vandalism or enhancement, depending on your of view. The wall itself could be worth millions. Phil mackie, bbc news, birmingham. Now its time for a look at the weather with helen willetts. Good evening. Again, it has been very wet and very windy today. Some places have clocked up over 40 millimetres of rain, gusts have exceeded 65 miles power. We have seen problems with high sided vehicles. A lively, gusty evening to come with more rain. This is the reason, is strong jet stream has managed to escalate this area of low pressure. Exceptional weather across iceland, for example. For ourselves, there is mild, light and windy weather which will sleet out of the way into wednesday. Back into colder air. If you are travelling, you are caught up with the wind and rainfall pretty atrocious conditions it will be the early hours of the morning before that clears away. It will turn frosty with the risk of ice in the north overnight. Into wednesday, sunny spells and showers. It does dawn on a frosty note. We will be scraping the ice of the cars and the showers will keep coming thick and fast in the north and west in particular but england and wales was a bit will be heavy with squally winds and hailand a bit will be heavy with squally winds and hail and thunder. Temperatures will be down tomorrow on those of today, so, despite some sunshine, it will feel cold. Probably back to the hats, scarves and gloves. I certainly will be. Overnight, the showers isjust and gloves. I certainly will be. Overnight, the showers is just a little bit ahead of the next area of rain. We will see a frost going into thursday morning, before we get the next area of rain. It looks as if this will come in steadily through the day. Turning quite light initially across Northern Ireland, wales and the south west. As it runs into our cold wales and the south west. As it runs into ourcold air wales and the south west. As it runs into our cold air in northern england, could turn to snow across the southern opulence of scotland. The north of scotland might stay in the showery, chili regime, but even with slightly milder air, not particularly nice. Quite raw as the winds are strengthening and you have got the rain coming down through thursday evening and overnight pretty wet to start but clearing out of the way, and left with low pressure friday for stopped topping and tailing the country with these weather fronts. Actually, and tailing the country with these weatherfronts. Actually, friday still looks really quite light. Warm weather front towards the north, lots of showers in between and another weather front potentially bringing more rain into the side. Youre getting the picture was no sign ofany youre getting the picture was no sign of any real easing in this light and windy spell for despite temporary lifting back to average by friday, it will still feel quite cold out and about, as it will through saturday for this broad, westerly wind coming in off the atlantic. Also, tapping into some of this arctic air coming around the area of low pressure, sat to the north of us. Still, the same area of low pressure with us. We won from thursday with as a friday, saturday, so pulling in the colder air. A greater threat of some rain true weather over the hills. Possibly more rain coming in later in the day for the south west on saturday and meandering its way across southern areas into sunday. Even the weekend, at this stage, is really looking u nsettled. At this stage, is really looking unsettled. Low pressure still with us unsettled. Low pressure still with us and no sign of it moving. The reason is the jet stream s readjusted itself to where it should be at this time of year, setting to the north, pulling in the wind and rain full stops scotland sees more of the rain then we have had through the autumn. Temperature wise, about average. Only a sign of it starting to settle down a little bit, become less windy and wet, through the early pa rt less windy and wet, through the early part of next week, but that does not look set to last. Back to the mild, wet, windy weather later next week. Unsettled. If youre out this evening, the warnings are on the website.
