Donald trump is put on notice by a judge about what he can post on social media about his upcoming trial. The uk economy grew ever so slightly in the Second Quarter of the year but is it a sign that things are turning around, or was itjust a consequence of some Summer Sunshine . And to fly or not to fly . A bbc investigation has revealed that rishi sunak has been using raf jets and helicopters as much as once a week during his first seven months in office. More than the uks previous three prime ministers. First, lets focus in on the situation in hawaii. The death toll from wildfires there has risen to 55. But hundreds more are stll missing on the island of maui, and its feared that the number of dead could still rise significantly. The historic seaside town of lahaina has been almost completely burned to the ground. Officials say it will take years to recover from the fires, which were fanned by the winds of a hurricane. My colleague Mishal Husain has more on the scale of the disaster oh, my gosh it has been a searing time for everyone who lives here on maui. Unbelievable. And for the thousands of tourists who came to a normally idyllic island. The wildfires fanned by Hurricane Winds destroyed almost everything in their path. There wasnt even time for, like, officials to come around and tell you to evacuate, nobody came into our complex until the flames where here and we were getting out and then a firetrap was coming in. People lost everything, homes, jobs, their cars are some, their pets. There is still people missing. Now, those who can have been trying to get away. We were stuck in our rooms for three days, we finally got escorted out, it was very scary because there was no light, we couldnt use our phones, we couldnt call family. It looks like a war zone out there, it really looks like some body came along and just bombed the whole town, its completely devastated, it is burned down to the ground, its. The winds dropping down are now helping the process of putting the fires out, but thousands are homeless. And at a shelter for evacuees, oprah winfrey, who has a home here, was one of those trying to help. I came earlierjust to see what people needed, and then went shopping, because often, you know, you make donations of clothes or whatever and it is not really what people need. With an entire town burned to the ground, it will take years for maui to recover after fires that have been the worst in hawaiis history. Hawaii is no stranger to wildfires, but these blazes are being called some of the worst in its history. The bbc s Azadeh Moshiri explains whats causing them. Wildfires used to be uncommon in hawaii. They were largely caused by Lightning Strikes or volcanic eruptions. In recent decades, Human Activity has made the more common and extreme. We dont know what has caused these wildfires. That still under investigation. We do know that there are several factors that have played a role. When we talk about wildfires, we tend to talk about three ingredients, weather, a spark and fuel. Biomass, things like trees and fuel. Biomass, things like trees and vegetation. We do know when it comes to whether, in hawaii, strong winds have fanned the flames. There are also these other conditions, this red area here represents severe drought in the state and the orange area is moderate drought. Together they represent about 14 of the state according to the us drought to monitor. These larger yellow areas are abnormally dry conditions in the state. This sucks the moisture out of vegetation which means in turn these areas are more likely to catch fire and then spread. On top of all this, scientists have also recorded 90 less rainfall than a century ago. When you are talking about a spark and fuel, scientists have also said that some parts of hawaii have grasses that are not native to the state and are far more flammable than some of the native plants there. Couple that with those dry conditions and again it means those areas are more likely to catch fire and then spread. Now, hawaiis governor said the state is struggling with the impact of Climate Change and said we are seeing this for the first time in many different parts of the world. Its true that Climate Change does increase the risk of wildfire because it drives up temperatures and makes heat waves last longer and makes them more intense. So as we are seeing here, dryer vegetation, higher temperatures, are seeing here, dryer vegetation, highertemperatures, it are seeing here, dryer vegetation, higher temperatures, it means that once a fire is ignited, it is far harder to stop it from spreading. Lets bring in our panel now. He served as director of policy of the labour party, under leader jeremy corbynbryan lanza, Communications Director on former pres. Trumps transition team. Its horrible to hear the stories and its even worse to hear that it is going to get worse. I think we have to be patient, and we have to offer compassion as people are going to go through these things, the town was annihilated in a matter of minutes. Hawaii hasnt seen anything like this. Weve experienced it here in california, the dry weather, the dry vegetation creates the ultimate fuel when you have waned. They were dealing with Hurricane Winds along with dry vegetation. We have seen the devastating impact. And i think i california, hawaii has got to adjust their forest california, hawaii has got to adjust theirForest Management california, hawaii has got to adjust their Forest Management and start clearing out some of this brush that they clearly didnt care to this particular circumstance. Hopefully now this will spur and take action. Hopefully now this will spur a and take action. Hopefully now this will spur a consensus on this, but we are will spur a consensus on this, but we are seeing both in the uk and the usthere we are seeing both in the uk and the us there are people seeing an advantage in denying that Climate Change advantage in denying that Climate Change is advantage in denying that Climate Change is happening, and that is a real problem, i think. About the need to at least adapt to Climate Change . I think you have to adapt climate Climate Change . I think you have to adapt. Climate change Climate Change . I think you have to adapt. Climate change is Climate Change . I think you have to adapt. Climate change is here. Climate change . I think you have to adapt. Climate change is here. You| adapt. Climate change is here. You see patterns developing, its very scary going forward. Im from california where you still as forest fires and we are use to the environment taking place where this brush is not cleared and the sparks. We would call a poorForest Management. But something that California Legislature and the government have not prioritised by the better part of 20 years and we saw the direct results of that. I think the other countries need to catch up and see whats california has done and what they are doing to play catch up. We have to adapt. We cant ignore what is happening. We have many factors of how to deal with it going forward, but adapting has to be the first one. My advice to the policymakers having done this and been a policymaker in california, the Forest Management, the clearing of the brush is probably the most critical thing because thats the most active fuel thatis because thats the most active fuel that is there. You can stop thunderstorms but you can clear the brush to get rid of the fuel. That is art of brush to get rid of the fuel. That is part of the brush to get rid of the fuel. That is part of the adaptation in california. Good to talk to you both on that topic. Stay there we will come back to you in a moment. Now to the us, where there have been legal developments affecting both donald trump and joe biden. First, to the former president. Earlier today, Federal JudgeTanya Chutkan gave mr trump leeway to share some non sensitive evidence that will be used in his trial on charges of plotting to overturn the 2020 election. The Special Counseljack smiths office had asked the judge to impose a protective order before sharing evidence with defence lawyers saying witnesses and transcripts could be compromised if mr trump posted about them on social media on his truth social site. Mr trumps legal team meanwhile argued that such an order impeded on his First Amendment rights to free speech. Then, in the last few hours, we had a major update into the investigation intojoe bidens son, hunter biden. The attorney general Merrick Garland announced that the prosecutor investigating mr biden was being given the additional powers of a United StatesSpecial Counsel. David weiss has handled the inquiry into Hunter BidensBusiness Dealings since he was appointed by then President Trump in 2018. Hunter biden has worked as a lobbyist, lawyer, and Investment Banker and has said he has struggled with alcoholism and crack cocaine use. He has been the focus of several republican congressional committees. Mr trump and his allies have long alleged that the 53 year old is guilty of widespread corruption, particularly in his foreign Business Dealings in china and ukraine. Lets talk to our correspondent nomia iqbal now. Great to see you. I want to start with hunter biden, because we saw some significant developments. What do you make of what we saw from the department ofjustice today . Its department ofjustice today . Its Reall Department Ofjustice today . It s really extraordinary. Especially given that the attorney general had previously dismissed any suggestions that he might appoint a Special Counsel. David weiss himself had also said that. And as you mentioned, david weiss was appointed by donald trump, and when donald trump as president and when biden became President Biden took over the white house, he didnt stand aside, he allowed the investigation to continue. I think there are questions being asked in terms of davids investigation which has been going on for a few years where the charges that he brought against hunter biden too narrow because remember, hunter biden was facing charges of not being honest about his Drug Addiction on a farm to buy a gun, and also filing his taxes late. So there are questions now will david weiss expand his investigation, which he will, but will there be more serious charges facing hunter biden, also, you know, its potentially possible that he could face a criminal indictment and possibly a trial. That could face a criminal indictment and possibly a trial possibly a trial. That is remarkable information possibly a trial. That is remarkable information that possibly a trial. That is remarkable information that we possibly a trial. That is remarkable information that we are possibly a trial. That is remarkable information that we are seen possibly a trial. That is remarkable j information that we are seen come through today. How are republicans reacting to this . So far, the republican president ial candidate, she has sort of dismissed at she has said that the she has sort of dismissed at she has said that the department she has sort of dismissed at she has said that the department of she has sort of dismissed at she has said that the department ofjustice, | said that the department ofjustice, she doesnt trust the Department Of Justice and shes repeated that unsubstantiated claim that we hear donald trump sow the time that the department ofjustice has been weapon eyes, she alleges that the biden family is a crime family and so forth. Its worth repeating that hunter biden and President Biden himself have denied any wrongdoing. But there are a lot of republicans that arent fans of david weiss. There is a super pack that is connected to a donald trump which is basically said to quote them, the fix is in, and they have expressed scepticism at david weiss himself. Hes been investigating as we just said, hunter biden for about five years now. So far, there has never been any evidence or anything of the sort to implicate President Biden and many republicans do think there is some connection, to stress again theres never been any evidence uncovered and President Biden himself has denied any wrongdoing. They do want to ask you about that other case that we were following a little bit earlierjust to mention that the former president , mr trump is facing the indictment into the january six riot and efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. We saw this hearing about what he can and cannot say in the judge ruling there. What he is able to say about this case . Its ruling there. What he is able to say about this case . About this case . Its kind of a mixed results, about this case . Its kind of a mixed results, really. About this case . Its kind of a mixed results, really. So about this case . Its kind of a mixed results, really. So itsl about this case . Its kind of a | mixed results, really. So its a partial win for Donald Trumps team in thatjudge has basically said anything that the Department Of Justice thinks is sensitive, whatever they designate sensitive, trump team cant touch it in terms of talking about it publicly. But the judge also cited with donald trump as well, it sided with donald trump as well, it sided with donald trump in that respect but said that department ofjustice can decide what it thinks including witness recordings, witness interviews, that donald trump and his team can touch. Part partial win for both. Its Worth Remembering that when donald trump was in court for that indictment and he did so they wouldnt approach any witnesses without a lawyer and that he wouldnt seek to intimidate anybody. Our Correspondence Standing by france and washington. Great to speak with you. Lets bring back our panel. I will start with you, what do you make of the Department Of Justice appointing a Special Counsel care . Is this then responding to pressure in particular from republicans who dont believe that hunter biden was getting a fair trial compared to what the president , former president is facing. I president , former president is facina. ~ president , former president is facin . ~ ,. , president , former president is facina. ~. Facing. I think if you look at the facts of the facing. Republicans are going to remain sceptical, but this is a very bad thing for hunter biden and the biden family because the reality is its a criticism that republicans have levied was that the previous investigator was not given the authority or given the scope to investigate broadly against hunter biden. This title allows him to go very broad. So if team biden was looking to put this issue behind them in a very narrow way, its the exact opposite of what they wanted stop by just to follow up that, we heard our correspondence a there has been no evidence this point linking the president to his sons actions particularly on his Business Dealings in particularly on his Business Dealin ~. , dealings in ukraine and china. I think the American People side right there it, certainly the judge i think the issue with Law Enforcement starting to look into this because there is smoke there, no one believes the official campaign, the statement Thatjoe Biden has no clue what is going on. It has now evolved. Joe biden for setting he never talked to his son Orany Setting he never talked to his son or any of his business partners. Now he says he never talked business to these people. The Asylum Seekers the kerfuffle that is going on here is a problem in the uk and its a problem in the United States. We see Asylum Seekers here bring Back Tuberculosis can bring back smallpox, we are talking about diseases that where eradicated here in the United States as a result of a mass vaccination system and they are coming into the border because the us government, the Biden Administration can figure out the proper testing, administration can figure out the propertesting, canfigure administration can figure out the proper testing, can figure out the proper testing, can figure out the proper screening and doesnt have a plan to address it. And those governors in those particular states whether wrongly or rightly, i think wrongly, whether it is abbott or desantis who are shipping these people to other parts of the country, i get the politics, its good that they can do that, they can claim some type of a moral victory on that, but they are shipping on people that are carrying diseases and expanding the Health Hazards that exist with Asylum Seekers coming to the United States. Irate coming to the United States. We should say of course that that excessive delete next excessive us agreements have not been able to come to any form of agreement, so its clearly an issue that both the us and the uk are dealing with at the moment. Brian, enter, great to have your perspective. We will be backin have your perspective. We will be back in a moment. Stay with us and thank you for watching the context. Hello. We had our brief spell of warmth in the last couple of days, and now that the weekend is here, of course, its turning a little cooler and more unsettled. But dont get me wrong, its not going to be awful. There will certainly be some fine weather around, some lengthy spells of sunshine, but quite a few showers around as well, brought by this area of low pressure just to the north west of us right now. And this is how its going to barrel across the uk during the course of the weekend, and the closer you are to the centre of this low pressure, the more frequent the showers will be. So, through the course of this evening and overnight, showers, quite frequent ones spreading into Northern Ireland by the morning, western scotland, perhaps the irish sea, wales, maybe the south, too, whereas many central and eastern parts of the uk should wake up to a bright, if not sunny, weather saturday morning with temperatures around 15 16 degrees. So a pleasant start to the day. And heres saturday itself quite brisk winds around western coasts with these Atlantic Winds and a mixture of sunshine and showers. Some of them could be heavy, could be a crack of thunder, most lengthy spells of sunshine, i think, in the south. And this pattern will continue into sunday as well. So, again, the closer you are to the centre of the low, the more frequent the showers will be and generally out towards the west, too. So london, norwich, hull probably faring best with fine weather, some spots could actually get away with a completely dry weekend. Now, lets have a look at monday. The low pressures still with us, but it is fizzling away. Still have a Weather Front here, so that does mean that across east anglia and the southeast for a time on monday, it could be in the morning or lasting into the afternoon. Difficult to say, but some cloud and rain certainly in the forecast. Showers could break out also across scotland, but many areas towards the west actually fine weather to start the week. Now, lets talk about the jet stream. Its still over us. Its been over us more or less all summer and at leastjuly into august. So this is where it will roughly be through the week, deflecting any heat coming our way from the south eastwards. But it could come close to the south later next week, so temperatures could rise. In fact, there is a hint if you keep checking the apps, youll notice that as you go beyond wednesday, thursday into friday, the temperatures keep rising and the weather turns a little bit drier and brighter. Bye bye. Hello, im sumi somaskanda. Youre watching the context on bbc news.
