Police in the Indian Capital new delhi, have arrested the founder of a news portal, known as newsclick, as part of an investigation into the funding of the company. Earlier today police raided the homes of several of the journalists and contributors working for the independent news website. Some of them were taken in for questioning and their phones and laptops seized. The raids follow an investigation in the New York Times in august which alleged newsclick had been taking money from a Network Canada has been told to withdraw dozens of its diplomats been told to withdraw dozens of its diplomats from the country. An escalation of that crisis that erupted a few weeks ago when the prime Ministerjustin Trudeau told his parliament that new delhi may have been linked to the murder of a sikh separatist in british columbia. We are told that canada has been told to repatriate roughly a0 diplomats by mid october 10. It does fit a pattern, india is not very tolerant of any outside interference and its affairs nor entirely sympathetic as of late to the principles of press freedom. There are concerns about democratic backsliding, and notjust outside india. So far, western governments have remained mum, when the Planet Ministers and such a critical ally in a stand against china. Politico reported on concerns within brussels. That long road did growth that has been given to mr modi. It could snap. The journalist who wrote that article is joining could snap. The journalist who wrote that article isjoining us that article is joining us from brussels this evening. Thank you for being with us. Are you speaking to people who are getting increasingly concerned about these intrusions, these raids on Newspaper Buildings and websites in india . Weill. These raids on Newspaper Buildings and websites in india . And websites in india . Well, i think democratic backsliding and websites in india . Well, i think democratic backsliding in and websites in india . Well, i think democratic backsliding in india and websites in india . Well, i think democratic backsliding in india or. Democratic backsliding in india or accusations, such accusations that are coming from liberal segments of sentience society, whether youre talking to journalists or Opposition Leaders or activists, human rights activists, and the other is how should the western governments be responding to canadas allegation . Canada is an ally and notjust any ally, but have the western governments reached their threshold to sort of now at least represent modi or ask him what is going on, because that has not happened. So i think these are two Different Things perhaps part of the same story. Two Different Things. There is concern, there has been concern i think amongst western democracies as to how to deal with the current sentience government, but the relationship is far too important. Its important, as he said, to counter china, but also to, you know, have some free trade agreements, the biggest government is trying for one and the European Union is trying for one, the Western Democracy is also an access to indias vast markets. So understanding, my understanding so far as they think sentience Democracy Isjust good far as they think sentience democracy is just good enough because i think the western governments need democracies as allies and they are running out of democratic friends, especially with russia with the ukraine invasion. But there are rising concerns that the canada episode, i think, has added more concern in the sense of what do we do now . Canada is it an ally and these are serious allegations that canada does actually manage to produce concrete evidence. I actually manage to produce concrete evidence. , actually manage to produce concrete evidence. ,. ,. ,. ,. , evidence. I suppose canada would oint to evidence. I suppose canada would point to the evidence. I suppose canada would point to the way evidence. I suppose canada would point to the way western evidence. I suppose canada would| point to the way western countries responded when russia interfered in the Internal Affairs and western countries and the response has been very different to what has been alleged here. But lets look at what the centre allegation was with regards to this independent news website. The New York Times had reported that there was chinese involvement of chinese funding at the side. How much help they had in their reporting from the sentience government and how much truth is todays allegations. Its government and how much truth is todays allegations. Todays allegations. Its difficult for me to answer todays allegations. Its difficult for me to answer that todays allegations. Its difficult | for me to answer that question, todays allegations. Its difficult for me to answer that question, but what i can tell you is that there are two parts to the story as well. One is chinese propaganda and there are concerns, serious concerns of a chinese propaganda, Notjust In India but also in brussels, also in many other western democracies. These are seen as concerns. People are increasingly talking about chinese propaganda, you know, we have been talking progression prepping for a long time. Thats one part of the story and if you look at the New York Times reports and if you look at the paragraph where they talk about india and this news website, publishing a video documentary, i would call it, or a long report on how great mao was. I dont think. I cant imagine an Sentience Editor sort of thinking of that to be a good idea or being convinced too, sort of, you know, sure that or report that or think that has any value for sentience audiences. So that dead. I was a bit stumped, i was a bit surprised to see that. The other part of the story, however, is, is it possible that the sentience government has used New York Timess investigation to try to get a few journalists used New York Timess investigation to try to get a fewjournalists in this organisation who have been known to be critical of the sentience government . Now, the background probably to what is happening in india in The Sentience Press is that there is a lot of pressure reported on sentience News Organisations a lot of independent journalists. If you talk to them they say we dont have a place left to work at. Theyve opened up youtube channels. So, there is, it is difficult to get advertisers can its difficult to get money. Thats a pretty serious situation in that context. If you ask me, The Sentience Press has been dragged one 50th out of 180 countries, i think Thatis 50th Out of 180 countries, i think that is pretty serious. Having said that, it is not as bad as china, russia or iran. 0f that, it is not as bad as china, russia or iran. Of course not, but thatis russia or iran. Of course not, but that is not saying much. We are talking about sentience democracy, so i think it is very serious. That cau~ht so i think it is very serious. That caught the so i think it is very serious. That caught the mother so i think it is very serious. That caught the mother of so i think it is very serious. That caught the mother of democracy, dont they . Have to abide by the principal a free democracy if you want to be called that. Thank you very much for coming in the programme. Pausing for a second to bring you some Breaking News coming out of italy. We are getting reports that at least 20 people are dead after a bus fell from a bridge in venice. Thats coming from city hall. Dont have much more reporting on that at the moment, but afp reporting tonight that 20 people have been killed after a bus fell from a bridge in venice. See if you can take next we can bring you more on that as we get it. Members of the British Medical Association staged a protest outside the conservative Party Conference in manchester earlier , two days into a 72 hour walk out by consultants and Junior Doctors. The demonstration coincided with a speech by the health secretary, steve barclay, who described the bmas leadership as militant. Have a listen. The consultants and Junior Doctors committee are relentlessly demanding massive pay rises, even if that means diverting resources from patients and despiteJunior Doctors having already received a pay rise of up to 10. 3 . More than a million procedures and appointments have been cancelled in the ten months of Nhs Industrial Action but because hospitals need to cover striking doctors in order to maintain Patient Safety and are currently paying up to three times the normal rate for a shift. The premium rates are set out in the bmas rate card, which the union recommends doctors use when asked to do non contractual work. The shortage of doctors and the pressure they are under is not unique to the uk. The United States is is about to see its Largest Health care strike in its history when more than 75,000 Health Care Workers at the private health care provider, kaiser permanente, go on strike tomorrow. Joining me now is andrew barnes, professor of Health Policy at Virginia Commonwealth University and siva anandaciva, who is Chief Analyst at the kings fund. Thank you very much for being with us. Andrew byrnes, let me start with you. What is behind the strike in the United States . Are there some things that are common . Things that are common . Yeah, i think so. What things that are common . Yeah, i think so. What we things that are common . Yeah, i think so. What we have things that are common . Yeah, i think so. What we have going things that are common . Yeah, i think so. What we have going on | things that are common . Yeah, i think so. What we have going on here in the United States is not that different from what is happening in the uk. We have Health Care Workers who are essential Health Care Workers who have been pushed to the brink by the pandemic and at least in the case of the United States here, these are workers at kaiser permanente, a large health system, an old health system, and these workers are sort of technical experts. They are not doctors and nurses, but they are the folks that read your labs, they take x rays, they make sure your rooms are safe and clean, right . You know, so these are sort of Essential Workers here, and what they are asking for is basically they are seeing seem to be a little patience for too little pay, they are asking for pay increases and they are asking for, you know, some reprieve, write, by a hopefully additional staffing to ease their workload, i think its important. We want these individuals to be happy, right . They take care of us and especially when we are at our worst and sickest. Right now, but these Labour Shortages and health care industries, workers have a lot of power, and i think we are seeing that exercise in the uk. find seeing that exercise in the uk. And did so with the seeing that exercise in the uk. And did so with the Labour Shortage in the United States the steps of a different funding model, obviously in the United States. Its largely funded through private health insurance. Do you have the same retention and Recruitment Problem in the United States . 0r retention and Recruitment Problem in the United States . Or can the people who are going on strike, can they hang out for better money . Is that possible in the current climate . I think they are going to get some increases. I dont know if they will get all of what they want, but they are absolutely having recruitment and retention problems in the United States, particularly with front line workers. Nurses, technicians, not so much with doctors, but with all these other experts that are really essential to providing quality care, so, nurses are particularly acute examples. We have nurses, and air strikes happening several times this year and last year after the pandemic, which are nurses that are burned out. I think a lot of Health Records are just burned out. Records are ust burned out. Thats the ke records are just burned out. Thats the key word records are just burned out. Thats the key word. And records are just burned out. Thats the key word. And you records are just burned out. Thats the key word. And you hear records are just burned out. Thats the key word. And you hear that i records are just burned out. Thats the key word. And you hear that a | the key word. And you hear that a lot here in the uk. Burn out. Its why the bna says these doctors are entitled to three times their pay when they are standing in for striking doctors and consultants. But i suppose the question is, as we are getting older as a population and fewer and fewer people want to work in this industry, surely governments have to think about something different. Governments have to think about something different. Absolutely. I a. Ree with something different. Absolutely. I agree with anger. Something different. Absolutely. I agree with anger. So when you survey nhs staff, just about one in four of survey nhs staff, just about one in four of them would say there are enough four of them would say there are enough staff in their organisation to do enough staff in their organisation to do a enough staff in their organisation to do a properjob. The reason we are squeezed is because of this Breaking News coming out of italy tonight, at least 20 people have died after a coach crashed off a flyover near venice. The citys mayor told the italian newspaper that the injuries are quite serious in that incident. You can see why because that is a very long drop from the fire over there. You can see their rescue teams just in the light theyre trying to pick their way through the wreckage, but we are being told there are as many as 20 people already dead with concerns, of course, for the others that are trapped in the bus. That is the picture that we are getting from venice tonight. We will bring you more news on that as we have it. Around the world and across the uk. This is bbc news. Bbc news bringing you different stories from across the uk. Doug has cystic fibrosis. 11 years ago, he was on a waiting list, desperately needing a new pair of lungs. Three years ago, in 2020, the law changed so that all adults in england are now considered as having agreed to donate their organs when they die unless theyve recorded a decision not to. But despite the law change, the consent rate is down. Its very special to die in the circumstance that allows you to become a donor. Its probably only about 1 of deaths in the uk. Youre much more likely to need a transplant in your life than you are to die in the circumstances that allows you to become a donor. I wouldnt have seen my sons birth. I wouldnt be able to to be part of my family, be with my friends, my donors family were presented with such a difficult. Youre live with bbc news. French Health Minister Aurelien Rousseau wants the public to stay calm over bedbugs in paris. In an interview with france inter on tuesday, mr rousseau reassured citizens that there is no reason for a general panic and that france has not been invaded by bedbugs. However, mr rousseau also said that when you have bedbugs, its hell. Asked, having stayed in one hotel where they were present, i can certainly endorse that message. There they are. In recent weeks, videos of bedbugs in trains and on the paris metro like this one have circulated on the internet, raising alarm among residents and public officials. Last week, the paris deputy mayor asked the government to take action to fight the scourge of bedbugs ahead of the 2024 olympics, set to take place in the city next summer. Heres what he said. Translation the bedbugs dontjust translation the bedbugs dont ust Sto Translation the bedbugs dont ust sto at the translation the bedbugs dont ust stop at the city translation the bedbugs dont ust stop at the city limits, i translation the bedbugs dont ust stop at the city limits, so its stop at the city limits, so its obviously a global issue. Its an issue for france, so its not sufficient to paris just addresses it locally. We need to organise systemic operations on these matters. Joining me now is robin reda. He is french member of parliament. Thank you for being with us. Look, it is a lot warmer in paris and in france. Presumably it is the right sort of environment for bedbugs to thrive, is that right . Thrive, is that right . Yes, yes, but first, i have thrive, is that right . Yes, yes, but first. I have to thrive, is that right . Yes, yes, but first, i have to say, thrive, is that right . Yes, yes, but first, i have to say, france thrive, is that right . Yes, yes, but first, i have to say, france isnt. First, i have to say, france isnt invented by bedbugs, as i heard it, but indeed, you can find more and more of these tiny pests in paris and a lot of big cities in our country because bedbugs have been increasingly present in france for years now. I suggested recognising it at a Public Health issue a. Share it at a Public Health issue a. Are they difficult it at a Public Health issue a. Are they difficult to it at a Public Health issue a. Yes but i have to say, in our belt, we like to spread messages of Prevention Campaigns and measures because prevention, once bedbugs are cited in the home, rooms must be treated quickly, and bedbugs bite you, but also they cause psychological distress, sleeping issues, its definitely not a question that we should treat lightly. Its very important for us. What protections are you putting in for the Olympic Village . You dont want bedbugs in the village, do you . You are right. We have to anticipate because, as you say, next year, 0lympic because, as you say, next year, Olympic Games will. We need. Conditions and we will. We dont want. Because of bedbugs. He wants to raise them in the movement of people. So everybody has to be alert and has to help us in this battle. Absolutely. We are looking forward to the olympics. Lets hope the bedbugs are put to bed by the time we get there. Thank you very much, get to talk to you. Listen, we are watching events in us congress tonight, that vote in the house has representatives. They are still talking before that motion to vacate. We will talk about that plenty in the next hour, so do stay with us. Hello. Its been a day of sunny spells, but also one or two sharp showers. Heres the Satellite Picture from earlier on and you can see a lot of bright weather. And there, just on the edge of the screen, thats the Weather Front that swept across the country last night and brought the thunder and lightning. Now tonight, another Weather Front is approaching this time, itll reach the north of Northern Ireland, and will also start to move across scotland. And this is the beginning of a very wet spell across this part of the country. 0ur Temperatures early in the morning between around 8 10 celsius. Now, back to that Weather Front you can see it moving across Northern Ireland and into scotland. If youre underneath that Weather Front, you could have 2 3 days of really wet weather, whereas in the south, closer to the area of high pressure, the weathers looking fine across the bulk of england and wales. Just a few showers here, relatively warm. But that rain front a narrow one keeps on moving in the same place. So in some spots across scotland, we could have 50 millimetres of rain thats a couple of inches and in the highlands, in the extreme case, even 2 3 times that amount. So thats wednesday, this is wednesday evening. And that Weather Front moves into southern parts of scotland, just clips the Lake District there, and its also across Northern Ireland. So a distinct divide between the cooler north and that slightly milder air in the south. Now, heres thursday notice that the wind direction changes, and its now coming in from the south. That means thicker cloud and some outbreaks of rain crossing ireland, and also western parts of scotland. Maybe some damp weather around the irish sea, too. That means the further east and southeast you are on thursday, the brighter the weather will be. And then, skipping to the weekend look at the weather systems, the large scale patterns across the atlantic, one of low pressure here. But look at these winds coming in from the south. Now, this is because of the pattern of the jet stream higher in the atmosphere, at around 30,000 feet, and this big dip in the jet stream, or trough, will basically move that warmer atmosphere in the southern climes from spain and portugal, across france and towards the uk. So, temperatures will be climbing across many parts of western europe, and here in the uk, well probably get to the mid 20s, maybe peaking at 26 27 celsius briefly. Even in belfast, temperatures hovering around 20 or so, cardiff in the low 20s, as well. So warmer weather, yes, is on the way. Bye bye. Hello, im christian fraser. Youre watching the context on bbc news. My colleagues and i who dont support mccarthy would plunge the house and the country into chaos. Chaos is speaker mccarthy.
