216210 to Leadership Challenge and voted 216 210 to remove him. The vote comesjust a day 216 210 to remove him. The vote comes just a day after Florida Republican congressman matt gaetz introduced the motion to oust him. He became speaker of the house injanuary, after 15 rounds of voting and many concessions to his fellow republicans. He addressed the media just a short while back. Lets listen in. Thing i will tell you is doing the right thing isnt always easy, but it is necessary. I dont regret standing up for choosing government over grievance. It is my responsibility, it is myjob. I do not regret negotiating. 0ur government is designed to find compromise. I dont regret my efforts to build coalitions and find solutions. I was raised to solve problems, not create them. So i may have lost a vote today but as i walk out of the chamber, Ifeel Fortunate Today but as i walk out of the chamber, i feel fortunate to have served the american people. I leave the speakership sense of pride, accomplishment, and yes, optimism. From the day i entered politics, my mission has always been to make tomorrow better than today. I fought for what i believe in and i believe in this country of america. My goals have not changed. My ability to fight is just in a different form. You need 218. Unfortunately, 4 of our conference can join all the democrats and dictate who can be the republican speaker in this house. I dont think that rule is good for the institution, but apparently im the only one. I believe i can continue to fight, may be in a different manner. I will not run for speaker again. I will have the Conference Pick someone else. Live to washington, dc. 0ur correspondent sean daley is following the story very closely for us. Good to have you back on newsday. Wejust played out a glimpse of what Kevin Mccarthy had to say, but what do you make of his overall statement . He what do you make of his overall statement . Statement . He spent a lot of time talking statement . He spent a lot of time talking about statement . He spent a lot of time talking about himself, l time talking about himself, actually. I wasnt really sure why he was talking too much about selling cars to make £5,000 and how he wasnt able to be an intern in the house. The central point, though, it says he does not regret negotiating. The reason he was deposed with a very central reason he was deposed as at the hardliner said he was unhappy he did a Back Room Deal with the democrats at the weekend, who faced with a Government Shutdown supported a very last minute bill that Kevin Mccarthy introduced to keep Government Funding going through until the middle of november. But it excluded funding for ukraine. That is something democrats would never normally vote for but they did so on this occasion because apparently he had offered their separate deal that they would enter a different bill for funding ukraine. So at least on the front of on the face of it thats why his gun. The brutal reality though is that the Republican Party is at war with itself. It has eaten itself alive for the world watch here. It has got rid of the speaker because they are broadly unhappy with the policies of the hardliners who have got rid of and the policies of the republican majority. Policies of the republican majority policies of the republican maori. , ~. , majority. Funding to ukraine remains one majority. Funding to ukraine remains one of majority. Funding to ukraine remains one of the majority. Funding to ukraine remains one of the key majority. Funding to ukraine i remains one of the key divisive issues in the party. What comes next, how is that likely to play out . Next, how is that likely to la out . , n. , play out . No Kevin Mccarthy means no play out . No Kevin Mccarthy means no promise play out . No Kevin Mccarthy means no promise to play out . No Kevin Mccarthy means no promise to love i play out . No Kevin Mccarthy means no promise to love it| means no promise to love it introduced a bill in the coming days. Extraordinarily, the house has just risen now until next wednesday. We know that this building behind us, they need time to find possible candidates to succeed Kevin Mccarthy. We heard him saying just in the clip we played there that he wouldnt be running again. No surprise there, sherlock, because he has just been deposed, he would get the necessary support. I think everybody has been caught in a slightly compromising position here because nobody really thought we are likely to see a new speaker. Maybe six or seven hours ago it was looking quite likely that there was either going to be some support from the democrats, given that he has fallen on his sword over a deal he has made with them, or that some of them would abstained, but what now happens is the question of the 6 billion of the 24 billion promised byjoe biden that was going to be released before the middle of november. Thats not happening. Its on the same day that 27 Foreign Ministers from the European Union countries had met in kyiv, and they have said we can see the bottom of the barrel as far as ammunition is concerned for ukraine, so does actually leave ukraine in a slightly precarious position. Joe biden the president saying we need to get this done and there is an increasing urgency to get that done. Nothing now can even happen until the speaker is in place. A speaker cannot be a place until the early as next week, because they have risen. So these are going to be very worrying times for president zelenskyy and indeed joe biden in the white house, and fierce, everything you see now, is the result where you get different parties running given bits of the government and those different bits of the government frankly not liking each other very much, but certainly with the case with the Republican Party, they dont seem to like themselves very much at the moment, at least as far as Kevin Mccarthy versus the eight or nine hardliners. Or nine hardliners. What is the overall image or nine hardliners. What is the overall image being or nine hardliners. What is the overall image being projected| overall image being projected of the Republican Party, especially of a global audience and at a time when the us is gearing up for elections . Chaos, really, isnt it . Matt gaetz is an ally of the former president donald trump, as are many of the other hardliners, including Marjorie Taylor greene. At the moment, there are notjust a question of ukraine funding not happening, and you have to bear in mind that where there are republicans like who are loath, are neutral to the president joe biden, the United States government had essentially made a commitment to president zelenskyy at a time when they are fighting on the front line against russias occupation of the country. And so are common to that degree, it looks like the United States government have got a very self inflicted headache. 0ne have got a very self inflicted headache. One of the key points, one of the reasons that democrats really werent fond of Kevin Mccarthy was that he as speaker had met Withjoe Biden back in may. They had done a deal between House Of Representatives and the white house to potentially avoid this situation, and they had agreed everything right up to and including funding packages. But at the 11th hour that was taken off the table, and in this regard now, joe biden is in a situation where he has made a promise and hes not sure if or when hes going to be able to deliver it, at least in the short term. Deliver it, at least in the short term. We will have to leave it there. Short term. We will have to leave it there. Thank short term. We will have to leave it there. Thank you i short term. We will have to i leave it there. Thank you very much for your perspective on that developing story. To the other story developing in the big headline from italy. The United States has announced sanctions on more than 20 individuals and entities, based in china, which make and distribute compounds later used in illegal drugs. They include ingredients for fenta nyl, a Synthetic Opioid thats has been blamed for Tens Of Thousands of recent deaths. 0ur North America correspondent peter bowes in los angeles. This is, indeed, an attempt to clamp down on what is called the Precursor Chemicals, the raw ingredients that go into making fenta nyl. The Synthetic Opioid that is so deadly. It is responsible for killing Tens Of Thousands of people in the United States alone every year. According to Thejustice Department here, it is Chinese Companies that are responsible for making these Precursor Chemicals that then find their way into the fentanyl compound, which is, again, then used by mexican drug cartels as part of their operation getting drugs into the United States. So there is a global chain, if you like, a chain that starts in china, and thats why Thejustice Department has announced this clamp down in terms of indictments and sanctions against those companies. And the sanctions mean they will essentially be cut off from the us financial system. And that means in turn that anyone in this country doing any kind of business with those entities will be breaking the law, and would themselves find themselves at the end of a lawsuit. So this is a us wide, but you can see it more globally in the terms of its likely impact. Early morning raids and daily on the homes ofjournalists of a website critical of the government. There is an already ongoing case filed by the Enforcement Director which is sort of a Financial Crimes Agency which has accused us of irregularity in money from overseas in the form of investment from an American Company and services are provided to that company. There is an ongoing case which clearly does not have much force in it which is why today you have the Delhi Police Being Unleashed and filing terrorism charges, if you please, against the organisation. Tojump charges, if you please, against the organisation. To jump from an accusation of chinese, so called chinese funding, when the money it received was money from an American Company, to jump from an American Company, to jump from that situation it could not sustain to one they are now alleging that it has been involved in acts of terror tells you how desperate the government is to shut down the voices of independent media and this is a situation where they have managed to compromise a large section of the media which sings the governments ten but there is a small section, like newsclick, who are still out there reporting honesty, fearlessly about what is happening in the country and the government wants to shut them down. The government of pakistan has said that all Illegal Immigrants must leave the country by the end of the month or face expulsion. The deadline has caused alarm among foreign residents, including an estimated 1. 7 million afghan nationals. Interior minister Sarfrez Bugti also said that properties and businesses owned by Illegal Immigrants would be seized. The announcement comes after two Suicide Bombings targeted religious gatherings in pakistan last week, killing at least 57 people. Sumera khan, a journalist and political analyst from pakistan, explained what has pushed the country to make this decision. I would say that it is not just these two bombings. That pushed pakistan to do these actions against the Illegal Migrants of afghanistan, or i should say those refugees that are residing in pakistan who crossed into pakistan illegally, and they were living here without any documented proof of their residence in pakistan. Im talking about those who are aliens here in pakistan. Im not talking about those who are well documented, who are living as legally residing in pakistan. Im talking about those who are aliens and living illegally. So the whole story started from the beginning of this year. When there was a huge bombing in the city of peshawar, police lines where we lost more than a hundred people and the bombing took place in a mosque. In the centre of the city of peshawar. And it was a huge damage for the pakistani forces, because the pakistani police, pakistani cops were targeted in that attack. After that there were a series of attacks on cops and soldiers across the borders where demonstrations were taking place in the city. So the Chief Of Army Staff of pakistan, he had to come up with a very clear stance for the first time i think in the history of pakistan that army chief is issuing the statement warning the afghan authorities, the interim government of afghanistan, do not let the terror expand outwards like the taliban, and isis, do not initiate these attacks in pakistan because pakistan, you talked about the interior minister, they found substantial evidence of refugees involved in these attacks. Thank you for watching and stay on with bbc news. Hello there. Were now all into some fresher feeling air. But temperatures are still a little above the average for this time of year. Tuesday was rather blustery with sunshine and showers for most of the uk. There will be some more rain in the forecast as we head through the week, but its mostly out towards the north and the west. The further south and east you are, the drier your week is likely to be, and then things will be turning warmer and more autumn warmth for most as we head into the weekend. Now, on wednesday, as you can see, weve got rain out towards parts of western scotland, across northern ireland, too, driven in by this area of low pressure. So its a wet start to the day here, further south across england and wales, lots of clear skies throughout the night. So a chillier start to the morning than weve been used to of late and still rather breezy with a Brisk Westerly wind. Thats across Western Areas of scotland, the west highlands, argyll and bute. There are some localised Weather Warnings in force, some of this rain likely to pep up at times. It curls around across to northeastern scotland, up towards the northern isles, and then our front sinks southwards across northern ireland, the borders into northern england, perhaps, as we head through the afternoon. Bright skies to the north of the Weather Front with a few showers around, the sunniest skies across england and wales, a few isolated showers out towards the west. Temperatures again in the mid to the high teens with a Brisk Westerly wind blowing. Now, we dont have to wait for too long before the next low Pressure System pushes some more fronts our way. And theyre going to arrive as we head through thursday morning, say, some further outbreaks of rain, quite saturated ground by now out towards southWestern Areas of scotland. The warnings extending further north as we head towards the end of the week. Some spells of rain, too, for northern ireland. A lot of cloud being thrown towards eastern areas, the best of any brightness towards the southeast of england. Temperatures once again in the mid to the high teens in celsius. Now, as we head through friday, youll notice that these Weather Fronts are starting to come more round towards the north and the west, being driven away by the High Pressure building in from europe. And that is going to keep us largely dry throughout the weekend. And there will be a lot of sunshine around. As you can see with that now southerly wind, we start to see the warmer air feed through and the temperatures rise, particularly for england and wales. So it will be feeling warmer over the weekend. Temperatures up to 26 celsius in Southeast England on sunday, low to the mid 20s across much of wales, low 20s for northern ireland, perhaps a little cooler and wetter for scotland. Bye bye.
