Tonight well be reporting live from here injerusalem. Well be in Southern Israel, where fighting has continued today, and well be in the heart of gaza. We start tonight with our international editorjeremy bowen, on a day of intense violence. Inside gaza it looks every bit as if palestinians are feeling the full force of Israeli Military power. Israel says hamas is responsible for the suffering of gazas civilians. And its retaliation for the hamas attack is onlyjust begun. Hamas has threatened to start killing its israeli hostages. The air strikes rolled on, hour after hour. Palestinian armed groups undeterred, kept up their own barrage of israel. 0ur bbc team was in ashkelon in Southern Israel not far from the gaza border when a salvo came in. Ashkelon is so close to guard so that there is no more than a ten second warning. Israel is moving in more fire power. The next stage of the offensive against hamas looks certain to be a Ground Offensive, much bigger than other incursions since hamas took over in gaza in 2007. Lines of cars outside a Military Base on the road to gaza were parked by reservists as they reported for duty, getting ready, saying their goodbyes. And now israelis are waiting for the government and army to act. The israeli town close to gaza littered with the debut of war felt like the essence of israels trauma, almost deserted except for forces. Essence of israels trauma, almost deserted except forforces. Hamas has rocketed sderot for years but has rocketed sderot for years but has never before stormed in. At the centre of the hamas Killing Ground was the police station. They broke in and use it as a fire base to shoot civilians as well as soldiers. Blood from israels dead and wounded smears the walls. Even here in what is always a front line town, for israelis this was not supposed to happen. They expected their military, backed up by the intelligence services, to protect them. And the fact that didnt happen means recriminations, who might be responsible, ive already started. But at the same time there is a strong sense of National Unity, of a country under attack, about what happens next. In the places that hamas attacked Israeli Military as well as the few civilians left are jumpy, as well as the few civilians left arejumpy, still shocked. A Ground Offensive didnt feel imminent. And in gaza, a few miles away, casualties, into the main hospital. The first few hundred of many more. It will get worse. Palestinians and israelis once more caught on the anvil of war in a conflict a century old that is as deadly it has ever been. And here in ashkelon this evening, so far it seems a little bit quieter and also i am not hearing the same level of explosions coming from gaza as during the hours of daylight. But i dont think they will have at all a quiet night. I think on this side, israelis are waiting to see what their government does next. It feels almost like a low, although back near gaza troops are jumpy, pointing at our cars as we approached their checkpoints with their weapons because they are still concerned there could be hamas people on the loose. In gaza i sense there will be an immense sense of trepidation among civilians. As for hamas, well, they must have expected a response like this to the enormity of what they did, so perhaps they are prepared. Who knows . Lyse doucet jeremy bowen, thank you forjoining us. We will hear more from jeremy later in the programme, reporting from Southern Israel, close to the gaza strip. Getting into gaza is incredibly difficult and dangerous. These are pictures from there tonight. My colleague Rushdi Abualouf is there now. He told us it is too dangerous for him to report live for us so he sent this report. This is by far the biggest ever israeli air strikes in gaza, on this scale, in this intensity. This is the biggest. In this building, its a Seven Storey Building where 20 to 30 families, they live in this building. I could hear the screaming of the kids, they were shouting. In the background, if you can see, its totally black. Most of the Electricity Supplies in gaza are not functioning, internet is down in every corner of this city. Talking about the humanitarian situation, gaza has been suffering for three days without electricity. The crossings, most of the crossings are closed except the rafah crossing with egypt, and it only allows people to go in and out no goods. No fuel is coming, no medicine for hospitals. The Health Ministry issued a Statement Today warning that within 48 hours the essential medical supplies are running out in the hospital. Nearby explosion. And they need urgent supplies to be able to provide services to many people. I could hear in the background israeli fighter jets are still flying overhead and targeting places between time to time and it seems that this night, the palestinians in gaza have never seen before. Rushdi abualouf on a war that is turning into a humanitarian crisis. As weve heard tonight, hamas warned tonight that it will start executing Israeli Citizens held captive in gaza, if israel bombs more civilian houses in gaza without giving a prior warning. They are said to be holding as many as 130 hostages. They include some partygoers who were at a Music Festival close to the gaza strip when hamas gunmen stormed into the area. 0ur Correspdondent Yolande Knell has been speaking to friends and families of those who are missing. The israeli Dance Festival that turned into the site of a massacre. As many as 260 people were killed here, in the fields by gaza. Others were taken. This footage shows a hamas gunman who appears to be leading away a hostage. Palestinian militants say theyve seized 100 soldiers and civilians. These are the faces of some of the partygoers and others thought to have been seized. For ido dan, the horror s been playing out on his familys whatsapp group. His relatives live next to gaza, and on saturday, his cousin hadas hid from hamas fighters in her home. She sent me this heart and she said. Im not sure were going to survive this. Hadas did survive, but five members of the family are now missing, including her 80 year old mother, her niece, two of her children and their father. This video appears to show erez, whos 12, being snatched. Ido pleads for their release. Just get him out of this confrontation. Its not for kids, its not for older people. I dont think there is any war ethics that were not violated here. Even war has rules and ethics and limits. As israel bombs gaza intensely, hamas says some hostages have lost their lives. And tonight its made a chilling threat, saying that each time israel strikes a palestinian home without first giving a warning, it will kill someone held captive. For the families desperate for news, fears are growing. Yolande knell, bbc news, tel aviv. As we heard injeremy bowens report, israel has spent much of the day trying to regain control of those areas in the gaza strip, close to the gaza strip, where most of those hostages were taken. A lot of the Military Activity has centred around the town of ashkelon. Anna foster has sent this report. Air raid sirens. Explosions. Theres a huge barrage going on overhead at the moment. We have taken cover. This is. Its actually a memorial building. You can see we are all here in the. There is nick, hes got the camera. Yeah, were going to move. Get down, get down. We heard all around us but didnt know we were there. When the siren started, i was talking to gilad. He had been at the Music Festival where more than 250 people were massacred as hamas launched its attack on saturday morning. Shrapnel tore past his head. He was lucky to survive. The bullet went through here and through out here. So it went. Yeah, you can see it went in and out. Yeah. We got a Fight Or Flight situation. You need to react really fast or that means you are dead, certain death. Its no wonder 250 people, 260 people died. And even more, i still dont know the body count. Explosions. People living here know these moments of fear well. Gilad and his mother didnt need words. We followed the smoke. We think this is where one of the missiles hit. Yeah, look. Here in the ground. In this poorer part of ashkelon, there arent bomb shelters in most buildings. Thin walls and windows dont stop missiles. So avi and anat hid their family in a stairwell. They told the children the explosions were thunder. We need to be strong for them, avi told me, but whos going to take care of us . Anna foster, bbc news, ashkelon. Here injerusalem, the funeral of a british man who was killed on saturday while serving in the Israeli Military 20 year old nathanel young, who moved to israel two years ago, died during the attack on the gaza border. From the funeral service, our correspondent nick beake sent this report. Nathanel youngs coffin was carried to mount herzl, israels national cemetery, where they grieved a londoner whod become one of their own. His family said it had always been his dream to be a frontline israeli soldier. More than 1,000 mourners turned out. Despite pleas to stay away, so the funeral itself would not be a target. Nathanel youngs sister started to pay tribute to him. Throughout the last 20 precious years, ive watched nathanel grow up from a cheeky little boy to a strong, brave, Kind National hero. But then, as she continued. Air raid siren. The solemnity was shattered. They took cover between gravestones and under trees, as explosions rang out. Some began reciting prayers. Before the alarm fell silent. We made our way to where one rocket seemed to have got through israels powerful air defences. This, an ultraorthodox settlement in an occupied palestinian area. This attack on a Community Nearjerusalem is a vivid illustration of how the situation has escalated so rapidly. We are far from gaza here, and as we speak there are more explosions that we can hear in the distance. One of many communities, both here and in gaza on the front line of this deepening conflict. Nick beake, bbc news, nearjerusalem. Lets return to our international editorjeremy bowen. Jeremy, the focus for Israeli Forces seems to be regaining control in Southern Israel. Also intensifying air against gaza. Any sign about where this offensive could go next . The indications are that they might sendin the indications are that they might send in tanks and ground troops. That has not been definitively confirmed but all the signs are there and if they want to make the impact, the really, really devastating impact that mr netanyahu has said that they will, that will deter their enemies for generations, they are bound to how to send in those troops. If they regain control of gaza in some way, there are big political questions that will follow from that, like how is gaza going to be governed . Mr netanyahu also called in a speech tonight for a National Unity government. It is very common, pretty routine in israel when it is a war, for a National Unity government to be formed, but israeli politics in the last year or so have been extraordinarily divided and bitter. Essentially because Opposition Leaders as they now are do not trust mr netanyahu at all. So for israelis, theres the question of whether or not those politicians will stop their differences and get together because the countries the grip of this massive emergency. 0n the other side, i think those civilians in gaza are going to be having an absolutely Dreadful Time the moment, but lets not forget that hamas, when it did this operation, planned it minutely and must have prepared for months and months, and they must have thought it through and realise that if they got into israel and killed so many people, killed civilians, murdered young people at a Music Festival, then israel would come in with a massive response. So im guessing that they have prepared also for that. So we will see what has happened and as usual in these things, civilians, who have been blindsided by what happened, are caught in the middle and i think right now people are going through a dreadful, dreadfultime. Right now people are going through a dreadful, Dreadful Time. Dreadful, Dreadful Time. Jeremy bowen, dreadful, Dreadful Time. Jeremy bowen. Our dreadful, Dreadful Time. Jeremy bowen, our international dreadful, Dreadful Time. Jeremy | bowen, our international editor. That is the situation. Tonight, the third night of a ward that tonight the Prime Minister of israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, has what it is onlyjust beginning. We continue our special coverage from israel and the gaza strip, but for now i will hand you back to the studio for the rest of todays news. Here in the uk, theres intense concern for more than ten britons who are feared dead or missing. More than 50 to 60,000 british nationals are believed to be in israel or gaza. This evening, the Prime Minister addressed an audience at a synogogue in north london saying that he stands with israel. And the Home Secretary is asking the heads of police in england and wales to step up patrols to prevent any disorder driven by anti semitism. More from our special correspondent, lucy manning. Rishi sunak and other western leaders have expressed support for israel. Foreign nationals from several countries are confirmed to have died in the attacks, including at least 11 americans. 0ur diplomatic correspondent, james landale, looks at the international response. Across europe, there have been symbolic acts of solidarity with a nation under attack. At the United Nations in geneva, diplomats stood in memory of the dead. Well, most of them. And western leaders voiced their revulsion at the attacks and their support for israel. We stand firmly and unwaveringly by israels side, said 0laf scholz, germanys chancellor. I would like to express my solidarity once again with israel, said president macron of france. And in britain, the same theme from the Foreign Secretary israel, he said, had the uks steadfast support. This was a Terrorist Attack perpetrated by hamas, who are embedded in gaza, shielding themselves among the Palestinian People in gaza, and we will continue to support israel as it seeks to defend itself. The United States has diverted an Aircraft Carrier to the region the aim, perhaps, to stop hezbollah militants attacking israel from their bases in lebanon. But in beirut and some other Middle Eastern capitals, there were demonstrations in support of hamas and concern for palestinian civilians, with the Gulf State Of Qatar even offering to mediate to free hostages. The United Nations Secretary General condemned hamas but called for restraint. While i recognise israels legitimate security concerns, i also remind israel that Military Operations must be conducted in strict accordance with the International Humanitarian law. Civilians must be respected and protected at all times. Civilian infrastructure must never be a target. In tehran, there are already posters celebrating the attack on israel, dubbed the al aqsa storm. Irans long supported hamas but denied any involvement in this operation. Tonight in paris, a different Story Thousands Marching in solidarity with israel, the divisions of this conflict already spreading far beyond its borders. James landale, bbc news. In other news here, The Shadow Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, has pledged to Rebuild Britain should labour win the next general election. Addressing the partys conference in liverpool, she said there would be Iron Discipline in her approach to public finances, but also promised reforms to the Planning System and an inquiry into the cost of hs2. Heres our political editor, chris mason. Im sorry theres no. More space in there. The hall was so packed for Rachel Reeves speech, there was a splash of grumpiness among those who were shut out. For them the only option, to watch on the tv as The Shadow Chancellor claimed labour were now the party to trust with the economy. Out of the wreckage of tory misrule, labour will restore our economic credibility. She said labour would speed up the time it takes to get big building programmes of National Importance like Battery Factories up and running. There would be an inquiry into the cost of the hs2 rail line. And theyd take a look at the books of every Big Government project. I will not tolerate taxpayers money being treated with the disrespect we have seen over recent years. I will not turn a blind eye to dither, delay and incompetence. Throughout this speech, repeated claims shed be super careful with taxpayers money. We will go after those who profited from the carnival of waste during the pandemic. One of the biggest rounds of applause here came for her plan to appoint a covid corruption commissioner, in an attempt to recoup the £7 billion lost to pandemic related fraud. That money belongs in our nhs, it belongs in our police, it belongs in our schools and let me tell you, we want that money back. The crucial thing today underlines is what Rachel Reeves said as she concluded labour reckon the economy, so often seen by many as a weakness for them, is now a strength. We are here ready to serve, ready to lead and together we can and we will Rebuild Britain. It is your endorsement she craves, but there was one that will mean a lot to her too. Remember this guy, the former Bank Of England governor, the mark carney . Its beyond time to put her ideas and energy into action. But, remember the challenges any government will face reviving the economy are huge. We are in a period where there. Is still sluggish growth in the uk economy and inflation is still really high. Does labour look like a a government in waiting to businesses . Theres still a lot of detail i think that needs to be. Built out around that, but i think we saw a lot of credible policies set out today. And tomorrow here the main event, the speech from the labour leader, keir starmer. What might we hear from what might we hearfrom keir starmer . The crux of it will be trying to answer the question why labour . There are polls that suggest the conservatives are unpopular, even deeply unpopular but Opinion Polls can also suggest that labour have some convincing to do amongst those who might be up for switching their vote. What we will get from keir starmer are new policies, including pushing out away from westminster towards towns and cities in england, and also about house building, trying to get spaces for new homes in pockets that
