Lets start with football, as its been confirmed today that euro 2028 will be hosted by the uk and ireland. The five nation bid ran unopposed and european footballs governing body, uefa, confirmed the selection on Tuesday Morning in nyon. Wembley is set to host the final with cardiffs Principality Stadium likely to have the opening match. Northern irelands Casement Park is also included and is the only stadium in the bid to be built from scratch. Their Chief Executive says being involved is a huge moment for irish football. This is fantastic news, we have been part of the bid since the beginning. We look forward to hosting the worlds third biggest Sporting Tournament and it will be transformational for Northern Ireland. People would have laughed 25 years ago if we said were going to be hosting part of what is a fantastic Football Tournament in our country. It has going to transform the country and were looking forward to it. England were one of the 11 countries to host euro 2020 with wembley hosting the final. But that game was overshadowed by trouble pre match which saw over 2000 people get into the stadium illegally, after breaching disabled access gates and emergency fire doors. Fa chair Debbie Hewitt insists the organisation have learnt their lessons from two years ago. We have thought very hard about the security, it comes first. Fans are everything in this game and if dont feel safe and secure at a tournament, then that is not a great place to be. We want a reputation for hosting the most safe competitions and most enjoyable. Nobody wants to come and feel uncomfortable. Former chelsea and real madrid forward eden hazard has announced his retirement from football. The 32 year old who began his career at lille has been a free agent since leaving real at the end of last season. Hazard won a number of titles during his career, including a Champions League trophy, two la ligas and two premier leagues. The second round of womens Champions League qualifying is under way and Manchester United are making their first appearance in the tournament. They are up against two time finalists paris st germain, in the first leg at home and its goaless. The second leg takes place at Parc Des Princes next week. Two time winners wolfsurg drew against paris fc. To the cricket world cup, where defending champions england have bounced back in style after their opening game defeat against new zealand. Batting first, they set bangladesh a huge total of 365 to win. Dawid malan top scored with a career best 140 whilejoe root added 82. In response, bangladesh lost early wickets, falling to 49 for 4 and never recovered, eventually bowled out for 227, losing by 137 runs. I think we were just totally outplayed in the last game. If you dwell on something too much you can start overthinking it. This team has always bounced back and been more aggressive when under pressure. Its one of the trades that is been so successful for the team and the challenge to us was to keep being aggressive even though were under pressure. Thankfully we did that with the bat and the ball tonight. In the days other match, pakistan completed the highest run chase in world cup history, beating sri lanka by six wickets in hyderabad. Sri lanka set a target of 345, but centuries from Abdullah Shafique and Muhammad Rizwan saw pakistan make history with ten balls to spare. You can stay up to date using the bbc sport website. American airlines now says its temporarily suspended all of its flights to and from tel aviv in israel through to the 11th of december. Weve heard from a number of other airlines who have also suspended their flights. This appears to be the longest suspension, American Airline say they will suspend their flights through to december. Lets return now to the israel gaza war. The first reports of saturdays attack came from a Music Festival in re im in the south of israel near the border with gaza. Hamas gunman arrived in force and killed at least 260 party goers there. The attackers then continued their rampage into the surrounding villages killing israelis and taking dozens of hostages. In total, more than 100 israelis have been taken hostage by hamas. The images of children being taken have been some of the most harrowing of this war so far. Frankie mccamley has more from the newsroom on the people seized by militants and a warning her report contains distressing images. As it stands, the most reliable information were getting at the moment is through social media videos like this one. Videos and pictures that have been posted online, which, as you can see, can be quite disturbing. Also, were speaking to family members. Some may have spoken to their loved ones just before they were taken, others have been tracking their Mobile Phones and others have spotted them in disturbing footage like this. It is important to say its not clear exactly what condition the hostages are in and its not clear where hostages, like this woman, have been taken. Lets focus on some of the hostages we know the most about. This is cherie and her two sons you can see in this picture. Weve got four year old ariel and nine month old kophia. Its understood they were both taken along with three other family members. We dont know exactly where theyve been taken to or what condition theyre in, but we did speak to sherry s cousin a little earlier on bbc radio four. Ive got a movie that she has been held by terrorists. Shes crying with the two babies in our hands. How old are her children . Ariel is four years old and kophia is nine months old. They have taken them without any food, without any diapers, without anything. We only hope that they didnt separate them from their mother. Lets take a look at another family here. This is doron and her two young children. Weve got three year old aviv and five year old razjust behind me. The bbc spoke to her husband, yonny asher, as he described the moments just before they were taken. During the morning i contact my wife and she told me on the phone that there are terrorists inside the house. I want to ask of hamas dont hurt them. Dont hurt little children. Dont hurt women. If you want me instead, im willing to come. Well, for yonny, he says his worst fears were confirmed when he saw this video, that appears to show his wife in the back of a van surrounded by militants. They try and put something over her head and then, just there, he sees a glimpse of his daughter. But ido dan, hes told the bbc that the horrors of saturday were played out on a family whatsapp group. He was speaking to them as they were hiding in an air raid shelter. Im saying goodbye. Shes sent me this heart and she said, im not sure were going to survive this. Well, from what we know, haddas did survive, but five of Herfamily Members are now missing, including her two children. Let me just show you this footage here. This appears to show her 12 year old son, erez, being taken by militants. Again, some disturbing footage there. There are hostages the bbc has not yet been able to identify. There are 11 thai hostages, labourers, who were working close to the gaza border that were believed to have been taken. Reuters has done an interview with one of the parents of the hostages that are believed to have been taken. This interview is in thai, but in it the workers parents plea for his safe return. Illjust show you the thai foreign ministry, their website, as well. You can see here, theyre saying nine injured, 11 hostages taken and 12 fatalities, but it is important to note, they say, pending verification. So this hasnt been fully confirmed. The bbc s thai service too say that this is still unofficial figures at the moment. Im joined now by Gershon Baskin founder and director of the Israeli PalestinianPublic Policy institute. Gershon was a key negotiator in the release of israeli soldier gilad shalit, was was freed in october 2011 having spent 5 years in captivity in gaza, as part of a Prisoner Swap with hamas. Thank you forjoining us on bbc news. First of all, tell us what you think could happen next in terms of securing the release of these hostages. Wejust securing the release of these hostages. We just heard from the Us State Department that Secretary Of State Department that Secretary Of State says hes been intensely focused on securing their release. What does that actually mean . It doesnt mean very much because the United States has zero leverage on hamas. Were in a difficult situation because hamas seeks to release all the palestinian prisons in israel he presents. Were talking about 7000 people. Many of them are serving multiple Life Sentences for killing israelis. Hamas is not willing to negotiate or talk about a humanitarian release of women or children until the cessation of all israeli attacks against the gaza strip for that that is not going to happen in the coming days. We have an unprecedented situation where i dont recall events, certainly in the event of the events so many Civilian Hostages being taken across any order for the hamas Civilian Hostages being taken across any orderfor the hamas im sure Civilian Hostages being taken across any order for the hamas im sure was quite surprised by the numbers of hostages that they took for them and the ease in which they took them. They have their own problem in determining what to do with them. Certainly they are not being kept them on location, they must be divided into small groups and spread across the gaza strip. Its a small territory. The difference between this situation and ace single israeli soldier who was taken to Gazais Israeli Soldier who was taken to gaza is that it is impossible to keep a secret in front of two and half Million People who live in gaza, many of which do not support the hamas regime there might be a lot of potential intelligent sources for israel to gather to determine to find the location of some of these hostages. I believe that israel is much more interested in doing Military Operations to try and rescue the hostages then ate negotiation with hamas. There is no negotiation with hamas. There is no negotiation on the table nor from the hamas standpoint. Lets negotiation on the table nor from the hamas standpoint. The hamas standpoint. Lets talk about that the hamas standpoint. Lets talk about that. The the hamas standpoint. Lets talk about that. The way the hamas standpoint. Lets talk about that. The way that the hamas standpoint. Lets talk about that. The way that the about that. The way that the hostages would be freed would be through a Ground Incursion . I think this is the israeli through a Ground Incursion . I think this is the israeli intention through a Ground Incursion . I think this is the israeli intention at this is the israeli intention at this is the israeli intention at this point. There are actors in the region working, the egyptian central intelligence, the qatari government, i believe the turkish intelligence is involved is well in trying to work out what i would call a mini deal releasing the women and children. And they are sick prisoners, there are several elderly who need medical care in exchange for Women Prisoners and israeli prisons. Im not sure that will have any traction on either side israel or hamas. But there are players like catarrh in egypt who do have leverage on hamas that the United States and britain and others dont have. States and britain and others dont have. Qatar. You states and britain and others dont have. Qatar. States and britain and others dont have. Qatar. You have experience in negotiating have. Qatar. You have experience in negotiating the have. Qatar. You have experience in negotiating the release have. Qatar. You have experience in negotiating the release of have. Qatar. You have experience in negotiating the release of a in negotiating the release of a hostage, the israeli soldier, gilad shalit. Tell us how you brokered that if thats even possible to do that if thats even possible to do that in a few minutes. Its an interesting story about how you got involved in math. It interesting story about how you got involved in math. Involved in math. It came on the backtrack of involved in math. It came on the backtrack of my involved in math. It came on the backtrack of my wife involved in math. It came on the backtrack of my wife Who Backtrack of my wife who is kidnapped and killed by hamas back in 2005. As you mentioned i was directing in Israeli Palestinian think tank and having communication to meet someone from hamas at a conference in cairo. We developed a relationship and the week after gilad shalit was abductive across the Israeli Border this hamas member called me and said lets open up a channel of communication for that later that day a phone call took place between his father and one of the hamas leaders. That led to my engagement for more than five years of trying to mediate for that in the last six months of his captivity my secret back channel became official because israel was at a dead end and they had no way of negotiating with hamas and i had a live connection with a senior hamas official. And through our communication, which was both by telephone, sms, e mail, fax we brokered a deal on the principles of the arrangement and then the final negotiations took place in cairo at the intelligence base between a senior official in the egyptians and the hamas on a name to name basis. It took five years and four months before gilad shalit was release for the 1000 palestinian prisoners were released in a deal amongst them, more than 300 who had actually killed israelis. Gershon baskin, thank you very much for sharing your insight on that story. Around the world and across the uk. This is bbc news. Lets look at some other stories making news. Joe biden has been questioned as part of an investigation into the handling of classified documents found at his home and former private office, dating from his time as vice president. The white house said the interview was voluntary and conducted over 2 days, concluding on monday. President biden has not been charged with any crime. San Francisco Police say they have shot and killed a man who crashed his car into the chinese consulate. 0nline video shows a blue honda in the lobby and dozens of people fleeing the consulate building. A study by scientists in britain has found that nearly half of the worlds known flowering plants could face extinction, mainly through habitat loss, linked to deforestation or the building of dams. The report says orchids, pineapples and grain crops are under threat. Those are some of the other stories weve been taking a look at here on the bbc. Youre live with bbc news. Now lets get more reaction from the United States john f. Kirby is coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security council in the white house. My colleague in washington Sumi Somaskanda spoke with him in the last hour about the us position on the israel gaza war and President Biden s promise of full support for israel. First and foremost, we want to make sure that that support will help them better defend themselves and to go after these Hamas Terrorists where they are, and to affect their ability to continue to conduct terrorist attacks. So thats the main purposes, obviously giving israel the capabilities that they need to better defend their citizens. Admiral, can you tell us more about what the israeli Prime Minister has asked the us president for . I dont want to get into the specifics of the conversation that President Biden and Prime Minister netanyahu had too specifically. I think it should be obvious, based on the president s remarks, that we made it clear to Prime Minister netanyahu that we would continue to provide them the necessary Military Support as they prosecute this fight against hamas. And already one tranche, the First Tranche of military aid is on its way to israel, be there soon. I fully expect therell be more. And it was important for President Biden to make it clear to Prime Minister netanyahu that we stand with them and that extra support will be forthcoming. President biden also confirmed that us citizens are also among those being held hostage. What is the us doing right now to work to secure their release . The first thing weve done is offer support to israel with respect to the expertise that we have in the Law Enforcement community, and the military community here in the United States, even in the intelligence community. Weve got hostage recovery experts, and we have offered their expertise to israeli officials as they think through how they might want to go about recovering hostages. And we now know, and its a recent development, literallyjust within the last hour or so now, we have been able to confirm that at least some number of those hostages are americans. So, obviously, we want to do whatever we can to help israel in these efforts. Weve also heard reports of explosions in southern israel, some ongoing fire traded between israelis and hezbollah in the north of israel. I mean, what is the us monitoring right now in terms of ongoing fighting and what the Israeli Forces are trying to do . Well, again, i dont want to speak for Israeli Military operations, but we certainly were in close touch with them. We understand that they are responding in kind to continued attacks and they are taking actions to go after various sites and infrastructure that that they know hamas is using for command and control or intelligence collection and that kind of thing. I want to be careful, though, that i dont violate israeli Operational Security here. Theyre doing what they believe they need to do to make it much more difficult for hamas to continue to prosecute this war against the israeli people. My colleague Sumi Somaskanda there, speaking Withjohn Kirby Coordinater for Strategic Communications for National Security council. Lets look a little closer now at what hamas is attempting to gain from the attack. My colleague clive myrie has more. The gaza strip, or simply gaza, is palestinian territory with israel on its northern border and egypt to the south. Its a tiny sliver of land, when you consider the number of People Living there. 2. 3 million in an area just 25 km long and 10 km wide. The largest settlement is gaza city. The Ruling Authority is the militant group, hamas, in control since 2007. Its committed to israels destruction, hoping to create an islamic state. The uk has designated hamas as a terror organisation, but its israel that controls gazas airspace, shoreline and border crossings, as well as water and electricity supplies. The un says 80 of gazas population survives on international aid. Human rights watch has called gaza an open air prison. Israeli rockets can cause mass casualties in the densely populated territory, and the Warren Of Packed Streets will make any Israeli Defence force Ground Operation extremely difficult. Its believed hamas has built a vast network of tunnels like these, in which gunmen can hide and be re supplied with weapons. If israel decides to cross the border, the fighting will be bloody and intense. Dr Michele Groppi is lecturer at the Defence Studies DepartmentKings College london, president of the interNational SecurityResearch Organisation itss verona. Thank you very much forjoining us. What many people want to get to the bottom of and understand is what hamas aim is for that and youve been writing about this, in your article you said in a twisted way hamas arguably needs this excavation. Why . Hamas arguably needs this excavation. Why . Hamas arguably needs this excavation. Wh . ,. , excavation. Why . Escalation. I know its twisted excavation. Why . Escalation. I know its twisted because excavation. Why . Escalation. I know its twisted because nobody| excavation. Why . Escalation. I. Know its twisted because nobody in the right mind would want their people to die. But were talking about hamas. They are losing control of many segments of the palestinian society. An increasing number of protesters have contested the leadership, its corruption, its management of money. Because there is money, obviously israel and other International Policies are not that great. There is money. That money has been used to buy weapons put up its really costly. They are really expensive. By attacking israel they can silence the criticism for them in their mind they can also silence the criticism coming from Palestinian Authority if you remember their relationship has deteriorated once again with the cracking down on hamas people in the west bank. That is their point, there is the Regional International dimension. Saudi arabia and israel are about to normalise relations can you imagine for the organisation that supportsjihad, you imagine for the organisation that supports jihad, its written in there, they say theres no other way than jihad. There, they say theres no other way thanjihad. They there, they say theres no other way than jihad. They Say International conferences are a waste of time. For the fourth consecutive day temperatures climbed above 25 celsius the highest values in parts of eastern and south eastern england. But it wasnt like that everywhere. Further north and west, we had cloud. We had outbreaks of rain across parts of scotland, a bit of rain for Northern Ireland and Northern England too. You can see a couple of different weather features here on our earlier satellite picture. Its this one that becomes the main Weather Maker as it pushes southwards overnight a band of rain, that rain actually pepping up again from the west. But to the south of it, we stay in the warm air. So overnight lows of 1a, 15, 16 degrees. To the north of our Weather Front, well, some parts of the highlands will get quite close to freezing. As we head into tomorrow this Weather Front continues to act as a dividing line, bringing some outbreaks of quite heavy rain across some central parts of the uk. That Rain Moving Out of Northern England into wales, the midlands, parts of east anglia through the afternoon. To the north of that, sunny spells and scattered showers, quite a brisk wind. In fact, gales in the far north of scotland. To the south of our Weather Front, some sunny spells, just the odd shower and another warm day, temperatures again into the 20s, whereas further north it is going to feel quite a lot colder, although only really feeling as wed expect it to at this time of year. As we head through wednesday night into thursday, this Weather Front lingers across parts of southern england, south wales into the midlands, so some clouds, some splashes of rain at times here. Further north, sunny spells a few showers in the far north west and most of us into something cooler by this stage, but 19, 20, 21 for South West England and the channel islands. Friday looks set to start with some pretty wet weather across parts of england and wales. That then tending to pull Away Southwards through the day, but a brief resurgence of warmth into the south east corner at 20 degrees, but further north and west 12 for aberdeen and for glasgow, 13 for belfast. Its that that is a sign of things to come for the weekend because this Weather System in the south finally pulls Away Southwards. In its wake, it leaves us with this north westerly wind and some much colder air sinking its way southwards across all parts of the uk. Were looking at daytime temperatures between 9 11; degrees at best. A lot of dry weather, a few showers and at night there could be some frosts. Hello, im rajini vaidyanathan. Youre watching the context on bbc news. Its not a war. Its not a battlefield. You see the babies, the mother, the fathers in their bedrooms and how the terrorists killed them. Its not a war. Its not a battlefield. Its a massacre. This is an act of sheer evil. More than 1,000 civilians slaughtered, slaughtered in israel. Hamas said they would attack Ashkelon Starting half an hour ago. They were punctual. This is about the fourth series of attacks. In all honesty, i try not to imagine because its just too difficult and these are times where i break, and i dont
