In beirut right now. Again, we have had strikes here through the day, and smoke once again rising on the skyline of the lebanese capital. The prime minister of this country, the Acting Prime Minister has called again for a diplomatic solution to the conflict and he warns that up to A Million people here in lebanon could be displaced by the ongoing violence. The streets of dahieh, this is the Beating Heart of hezbollah in beirut, now looking like a ghost town. Thousands have left, many more are still trying to leave. Driving through dahieh this morning, we saw cars packed with mattresses and bags. Some people seemed to be leaving on foot. Israeli Air Strikes destroyed this building yesterday. The smell of the explosives was still hanging in the air and we could hear the sound of drones flying overhead. Israel says it will continue to target hezbollah, even after killing the groups leader, Hassan Nasrallah. Dahieh is no longer safe. There is a tense and anxious wait in lebanon following the killing of Hassan Nasrallah. The wait for a possible response from hezbollah. For 30 years, Hassan Nasrallah led A Group often described as a state within a state. Hezbollah has been weakened but it has not been defeated. There is a trail of destruction in dahieh and across the country. A Ground Invasion of southern lebanon feels more imminent. But here, the impact on those caught up by the violence. Lebanon saysi million people may have already been displaced by the conflict so far. Many are now here in beirut. Translation honestly, the situation here in lebanon is very chaotic and we are really in a crisis. We do not know what is going to happen. Lebanon is waiting, uncertain about the future, but fearful about what may come next. Hugo bachega, Bbc News, beirut. The drones that hugo was talking about can still be heard very clearly above as in the skies here in beirut. There is a loud, constant whining sound. Interestingly on the skyline behind me, you can also see where planes come in and land at the international airport here in beirut. Almost every commercial airline has now stopped flying here. Only the lebanese national carrier is still flying, Middle East airlines. Ijust saw is still flying, Middle East airlines. I just saw a is still flying, Middle East airlines. Ijust saw a plane coming in but there are very few going in or out of this country. Lets look at how the events of this weekend are being viewed in israel now. On saturday evening, israels prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the outcome of that airstrike was an historic turning point. But iran, a close supporter of hezbollah, said his death would be avenged. Israel has continued its attacks against senior figures in hezbollah. The countrys military posted on x that it has killed nabil anuk, who it says was a member of hezbollah s executive council, in what it says was a precise strike. Hezbollah has not confirmed this. Our Correspondent Injerusalem Jon donnison has the latest. Israel has been carrying out fresh airstrikes this morning. They say theyve taken out another senior hezbollah commander. And if you listen to the words of prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Last Night, he clearly feels that he has the boot on the throat of hezbollah and is going to continue applying the pressure. So the ball is really in the court of both hezbollah and perhaps more importantly, iran. Now, to see what their response will be now, in particular, iran so far during this escalation of violence has involved it avoided becoming directly involved in a confrontation with israel. But the assassination of Hassan Nasrallah is going to challenge that, and were going to have to wait and see whether it will continue. One key point, i think, is that all the efforts of the international community, including those being led by President Biden and the United States, have failed to stop israel carrying out its operations against hezbollah, as well as the ongoing war in gaza. And israel clearly feels that it will do whatever it takes to protect its citizens. And, as i say, no sign that theres an end to this escalation in violence. Those developments in jerusalem, of course, have led to huge Concern Notjust in the Middle East, but around the world as well. Lets speak to jane kinninmont, director of policy and impact at the European Leadership network, a Think Tank focusing on foreign, Defence And Security issues. Thank you forjoining us here on Bbc News. There is so much to work through a look at the current situation. I think first of all picking up on what john was saying there in jerusalem. There doesnt seem a great deal of indication that the parties here in the region want a de escalation at moment, does that . Want a deescalation at moment, does that . Does that . Well, there has been a curowin does that . Well, there has been a growing escalation does that . Well, there has been a growing escalation ever does that . Well, there has been a growing escalation ever since i a growing escalation ever since October The 7th and the gaza war, but there has also been elements of restraint and even attempts at peacemaking. So when we talk about the parties in the region, of course there is iran, as you mentioned, weighing up very carefully how and whether to respond because it is, to some extent, not deterred from israel thoroughly getting involved in this, it doesnt want to get dragged into a war in which it might confront the us. And then we have the arab states, and something that once would have been historic is now being rather overlooked with the escalation of violence, but last week at the un, Saudi Arabia and jordan, along with norway, led A Group of arab countries, offering peace and even Security Guarantees for israel if they will cope with the two State Solution and accept the creation of a palestinian state, which Benjamin Netanyahu said he has spent his career trying to fend off. So there are efforts to try to bring about a bigger regional peace, but of course, as we can see, the events in the region are pointing in the opposite direction. Opposite direction. Lets look more deeply opposite direction. Lets look more deeply into opposite direction. Lets look more deeply into that. Opposite direction. Lets look more deeply into that. You i more deeply into that. You mentioned Saudi Arabia there, and that was one of the focuses of the speech by Benjamin Netanyahu to the Un General Assembly on friday. He was obviously referring back to the Normalisation Efforts that were going on behind the scenes, he said, before October The 7th and they were closer than they had ever been. But of course what we are saying, that is a direct contrast between what has been going on and on what we are seeing right now, in terms of this ongoing escalating Military Action in lebanon. Escalating Military Action in lebanon escalating Military Action in lebanon. ~. . , lebanon. Well, what Benamin Netanyahufi lebanon. Well, what Benamin Netanyahu has i lebanon. Well, what Benamin Netanyahu has been h lebanon. Well, what Benjamin Netanyahu has been hoping i lebanon. Well, what benjamin| netanyahu has been hoping for is that on the one hand he can build a piece with the wealthy Gulf State and maintain peace with egypt and jordan, and on the other hand, deal a blow to iran and its allies in the region stop he wants to do all of this without adhering to the two State Solution, and that is the core of the problem and it means that there is talk of normalisation with Saudi Arabia currently is not realistic. The saudis have repeatedly made it clear, and they have been consistent for more than 20 years in saying if we could get to a two State Solution, then we would recognise israel which currently they dont do. They tried to offer that as an incentive to help the palestinians because they know that the Saudi Population does care about the palestinians and does not want to see the kinds of violence that we are seeing in the region. But right now theres not any way to get that normalisation, and to an extent, i think, normalisation, and to an extent, ithink, it normalisation, and to an extent, i think, it is largely a Talking Point for the israeli public and american public. Jane, thank you forjoining us. We really appreciate it. Much more to come from here in beirut throughout the day, of course. It is a developing and very fast moving story, particularly as we watch to see what response they will be on both sides, on the potentially hezbollah side and on the israeli side, as well as their Military Action continues. Stay with us and we will bring it all to you here on Bbc News. An eight year old child has died after being shot on a farm in the North East of england. Cumbria police said they have arrested a man in his 60s. Live to cumbria and our correspondent fiona trott. This is where police were seen yesterday, just off this busy road here, the a66 in cumbria. What the police have told us it is this, both they and the paramedics were called to a farm just before three Oclock Yesterday because they had reports of a child having been seriously injured in a firearms incident. When they arrived at the farm, they found an eight year old boy with serious injuries to his face and head. That is how it has been described to us. They also found a gun. They arrested a man at the scene, a man in his 60s. He was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. The boy was airlifted to hospital. Tragically, that eight year old died in hospital overnight, and the police have now told us that the man in custody is being questioned on suspicion of Gross Negligence manslaughter. We are waiting to hear what his relationship is the man who is in custody. And are also waiting to hear what type of gun was involved, but of course what we have in this area in cumbria, while this investigation continues, as a family and a community here who are coming to terms with what has happened. Are coming to terms with what has happened are coming to terms with what has happened. Now, time for a look at todays sport. Hello from the bbc sport centre. The cabinet office minister, Pat Mcfadden, has said he doesnt accept some of the issues raised by Rosie Duffield, who has resigned as a Labour Mp. He also says rules around donations will be tightened after Ms Duffield, wholl now sit as an independent, was critical of Sir Keir Starmer using Donation Money for clothing, and today she went on to criticise what she claimed was a Lads Culture in the labour party. Heres our chief political correspondent henry zeffman. When she was elected in 2017, Rosie Duffield became the first ever Labour Mp for canterbury. She is now likely to spend years in parliament without a party, having Quit Labour with a deeply personal attack on the Sir Keir Starmer. In a letter to the prime minister, she criticised the gifts he received of tickets and clothes and his decision to withdraw the Winter Fuel Allowance from most pensioners. She said this was hypocrisy, sleaze, nepotism and apparent avarice are off the scale. Speaking this morning on sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, she went further. We all had our faith in Keir Starmer and a labour government, and i feel that voters and activists and mps are being completely laughed at and completely taken for granted. She also said the prime minister had a problem with women. Most backbenchers that im friends with are women and most of us refer to the men that surround him, the young men, as the lads. Rosie duffield has been semidetached from labourfor some time. She clashed with both Sir Keir Starmer and Jeremy Corbyn over her campaigning on womens rights and transgender issues. Cabinet minister Pat Mcfadden stressed that Ms Duffield had been uneasy in labour a while. When i read Rosies Letter Last Night and listening to the interview there, i think you can see that shes been disillusioned with the party leader, with the party maybe more generally, for quite a long time. I dont think this is something thatsjust developed in the last few months. And in a fresh attempt to draw a line under a damaging period for the government, Mr Mcfadden promised new rules requiring more transparency from ministers about donations. Ministers have not had to declare in the past hospitality they have received, while backbench mps and Shadow Ministers have. We will close that loophole going forward. We will make it clear in the Ministerial Code that both ministers and Shadow Ministers should be under the same declaration rules. The political risk for Keir Starmer is that this is more instability under a prime minister who promised change. Henry zeffman, Bbc News. The conservative conference is opening in birmingham this afternoon, the first since the Partys Election Defeat injuly. The four candidates to succeed Rishi Sunak will make speeches and take questions. James cleverly, Kemi Badenoch, Tom Tugendhat and Robert Jenrick will be trying to win support before mps eliminate two more of them from the contest. Speaking to Laura Kuenssberg this morning, leadership hopeful Robert Jenrick explained why he is the man to turn around the fortunes of the Conservative Party after losing out to labour in the General Election. In the article that i wrote in the hours after the election, then i came on your show that weekend, i said that we failed to deliver on the economy, on the nhs and our borders. So there are multiple failures that we need to acknowledge as a party, whilst obviously defending the things we got right in government, and then weve got to listen to the public and set out serious answers to those challenges. Ive spent the last few months thinking very deeply about how we do that, and i dont want to waste the next five years debating those things. Thats a recipe for more infighting and for further loss of public trust. I want to use this Leadership Contest for us to settle those things and have a clear plan as to how we take our party and our country forward, and i have that in particular on immigration. Competing with robertjenrick for the leadership of the conservatives is Kemi Badenoch, with a Campaign Focus of immigration and integration, saying not all cultures are equally valid when it comes to deciding who should be allowed into the uk. Im saying that if we want to have a well integrated society, we need to make sure that we have a shared culture and a shared identity. This is a multi ethnic society. Thats obvious. Im a black woman sitting here talking to you. But there is a difference between being multi ethnic and being multicultural. I grew up in a place that was multicultural, and yet everybody looked the same. Conflict arises when you emphasise difference. We need to emphasise the things that we share. Being british, british values, the things that we talked about freedom, equal rights, personal responsibility, not discriminating people because of their sexual orientation. There are some cultures that do that. I dont think that a culture that thinks gay people should be stoned is as valid as ours. This is not a controversial thing to say. Lets go live to birmingham and talk to our political correspondent iain watson. So, an opportunity for all of them to set out their stall this weekend . Them to set out their stall this weekend . Well, a huge opportunity this weekend . Well, a huge opportunity. They this weekend . Well, a huge opportunity. They can this weekend . Well, a huge opportunity. They can set i this weekend . Well, a huge. Opportunity. They can set out their stall every day until the conference winds up on wednesday. The question is whether those points of difference between the candidates will become clearer. At the moment they are all being very informal, i am on a little balcony here back down below me Tom Tugendhat, one of the four contenders, was parading through here pressing the flesh with conservative members in the presence of one of the few senior conservatives to hold on in the local elections this year, the teesside mayor. He succeeded where other big figures such as Andy Street here in birmingham in the West Midlands were defeated. If he is getting behind Tom Tugendhat, that he will see that as something of a boost. Tomorrow we are going to have in conversation events, Fireside Chats with two of the candidates. That whole process will be repeated again on tuesday. 0n will be repeated again on tuesday. On wednesday, they are all on display, all four candidates will be setting out their stall on the final day of conference. That is a big departure from what usually happens, where there is a big lead is a speech. In fact, you may not have heard much mention of him actually, but the former prime minister, the current conservative interim leader, Rishi Sunak, is not going to be speaking from the main stage at all. He isjust going to be welcoming some of the party members at a reception around 5pm this afternoon. So, very much a peripheral role. Most of the focus is going to be on who replaces him. We have heard from robertjenrick and from Kemi Badenoch, who were on the bbc this morning. James cleverly and Tom Tugendhat are the other two contenders and they have also been making their views very clear. And their views very clear. And their perception of what needs to be done, apparently, is leadership, and their diagnosis of what went wrong is that there was too much infighting and people simply were not listening to the Conservative Party. So there are some points of agreement with the candidates. I think the areas where we are going to get the sharpest focus is going to be issues such as immigration. Robertjenrick set out his stall this morning. 0ne Robertjenrick set out his stall this morning. One of the reasons for that, just to remind everyone of the process, although there are four contenders here, once this conference wraps up, the mps will then whittle that down to the final two, and only two contenders will then go forward to the Party Membership for the final Ballot Stop they will decide who the next conservative leader is going to be. Thats why some are focusing on issues that they think the Party Membership in particular are concerned about, and that is migration, both illegal and legal. And that is migration, both illegal and legal. How much is auoin to illegal and legal. How much is going to be illegal and legal. How much is going to be about illegal and legal. How much is going to be about policy, illegal and legal. How much is going to be about policy, as l going to be about policy, as opposed to principal, which is what Kemi Badenoch wanted to focus on . Whoever wins will be on the backbenches for probably five years. On the backbenches for probably five ears. ~ ,. , five years. Absolutely. From the point five years. Absolutely. From the point of five years. Absolutely. From the Point Of View five years. Absolutely. From the Point Of View of five years. Absolutely. From the Point Of View of kemi. The Point Of View of Kemi Badenoch it is about character, principle and specific policies. That does make it difficult for the rest of us to pin her down on some of those specifics. But that is her approach, and that has been her approach. Forthe approach, and that has been her approach. For the others it is policy. For example, Robert Jenrick has been clear that the party has failed to deliver on immigration, so he says there needs to be a legal process in parliament about the number of people legally coming into this country. Tom tugendhat has been dragged into this as well, and he says there should be a cap of 100,000. They have also been specific policy pledges from all the candidates on extra defence spending, although Kemi Badenoch not putting a timescale on it. Badenoch not putting a timescale on it. ~. ,. , timescale on it. Ian watson at the conservative timescale on it. Ian watson at the Conservative Party the Conservative Party conference. Thank you very much. It opens in birmingham this afternoon. There is much more on that conference on the Bbc News website, along with all the other main story is that we are featuring today. Stay with us here on Bbc News. Hello. Another area of low pressure is moving in this weekend and that will affect much of the country for the start of the upcoming week. Cool, wet and windy at times but by mid week an improvement with High Pressure moving in and there should be high spells of sunshine. We continue through the second part of the day and further North And East it will stay dry with any Sunshine Fading and the best of any brightness will be across scotland in the northern half of scotland with winds picking up further south and west. Rain will pile into northern ireland, wales and south West England and will turn heavier later on. Temperatures, low to mid teens across the board. As we move into this evening and overnight, the Rain Peps Up and wales and south West England could see some localised flooding issues and it will slowly push North And East and the winds will also pick up, 60 mass per hour around some channel coast. We will also scoop up some mild air. Some double figure values. As low pressure spreads across the country on monday, and grinds to a halt as it bumps into that area of High Pressure, it looks like it will be very wet and rather windy for many parts of england and wales. The heaviest of the rain will be across parts of east anglia, northern and Eastern England and across into north wales. Anyway here with saturated ground could have the risk of localised flooding, so stay tuned to the forecast. It might brighten up across the south giving a fairly warm 17 or 18 celsius, and staying dry across scotland, but breezy across the board. The rain continues across parts of england and wales as we move through monday night, eventually becoming confined to east and south east england. A cooler, dry night to come across the north and the west. Again, double figures for england and wales and northern ireland. That area of low pressure is still very slow to pull out eastwards, so it is going to be affecting eastern parts of england. East anglia and the southeast with strong, gusty winds and outbreaks of rain. Some will be heavy at times. The best of the sunshine will be towards the north and the west, thanks to High Pressure. Temperatures peaking at around 16 or 17 celsius. The High Pressure does take over towards the end of the week. It turns drier and sunnier for many, but the knights will turn a bit cooler. Night time.
