BOSTON -- Eight months ago, in the middle of the strangest Red Sox season in history, chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom quietly faced an organizational turning point. A half-year after trading Mookie Betts to the Dodgers, Bloom was faced with an aging, losing roster and found a trade market ripe with potential buyers due to the expanded playoff format.
