More, all coming in right here to cnn news central. Any moment now we expect the gilgo beach Serial Killer suspect to appear in court. This is rex heuermanns first appearance since pleading not guilty to the murder of three women. Police believe heuermann may have, in fact, committed those killings inside his familys home when his wife and two children were out of town and after an intensive search of the property his wifes attorney shared these photos of the aftermath of that search. Cnns jean casarez joins us live from outside the courthouse. Jean, often these appearances are procedural, but what do we expect to happen today and soon after . Reporter well, we just understood that media was just allowed into the courtroom, so it has not quite begun yet, but i think any minute this conference, this case has been set for conference today. I was told is the proper terminology. Ive been told by the Public Information officer theres nothing formally set that they are going to discuss, but logic tells you they are going to discuss the case. The defense will start receiving all of the discovery in the case. Hanging throughout is an application for bail, and ive been told by the court that they do not believe that today the defense will be asking for bail. They probably havent even gotten all the information that they need, but you never know what is going to come up at a hearing. Thats why its important to be in the courtroom, to be right here. Now we do know that the estranged wife of rex heuermann, asa ellerup, shes been dealing with so much at her home because of that execution of the Search Warrant and things were in such disarray because they are trying to find potential forensic evidence, anything that can link the defendant in this case with the victims being in that home. Now we also know through her attorney who spoke with cnn that there has been communication between asa ellerup and her husband, jailhouse phone calls. Now the attorney also says that is very well known. They are recorded. There is no privacy in a jail at all. So its just generalities that she never brought up anything about the accusations or about the charges at all. One other thing to note that the civil attorney for miss ellerup said to cnn was that in regard to her filing for divorce, that this was not a symbol of guilt or innocence, that she is trying to protect herself right now, and he said that there may be financial civil cases that are filed and this is her moment to protect herself and her children. By the way, no sight at all of his estranged wife and their children today it at this courthouse. The possibility according to investors murders took place in that house as well, jean casarez outside the courthouse, thanks so much. Heuermanns wife as we were noting there filed for divorce. Her attorney spoke with cnn about the extensive search of the family home and the trauma she and her children have been enduring once they found out what allegedly happened there while they were apparently out of town. Everything in the house was turned upside down. Dresser drawers emptied out. The bathroom tub, which was a vinyl tub, was cut open. The floors are ripped up. The couches and mattresses have been removed and just piles and piles of debris that were left in the residence where you barely had Walking Space to get into the house. I wonder what you would say to critics who would question how she could have not known about these allegations that her husband was an alleged Serial Killer. Has she had a chance to reflect on what people are thinking, perhaps . At this point no, but she had no idea this was going on or the allegations her husband was a suspect. Shes not a suspect. She has not been questioned by the police regarding any of this. Its been extremely overwhelming for her and the children trying to piece life back together, what it was two and a half weeks ago. I dont know if theyre ever going to return to normalcy. Has her husband tried to contact her from jail at all . Whatever conversations shes had with her husband im not at privy to discuss but she has not discussed the crimes or allegations. I understand she did file for divorce after his arrest. Does that indicate somehow her belief on his innocence or guilt . No, it does not. She the only thing she knows about the allegation is what the media has reported. Theres a Long Way To Go with the criminal trial. Shes filed to protect herself and Family Moving forward. All right. Lets discuss these new developments in the case a little further. We have legal analyst joey jackson with us, a criminal Defense Attorney, and scott bond, a criminologist and author. Okay. Joey, you hear asa ellerup, she has not been or she has been asked some logistical questions and she has not been asked questions as in a formal interrogation. What does that signal to you . Yeah. I think, brianna, good to be with you that the police have significant evidence. Obviously, theyve been working with prosecutors on the case to build something very strong. If you look through the 32page indictment in the case or the bail application, it gives an indication that police have been very thorough in conjunction with the prosecutors in getting the person they think are responsible is responsible, and the fact that they havent had contact with this wife to this point does not preclude the fact that they may look to interview the her at some subsequent point, but establishes to me that they dont need her per se to establish anything in connection with they believe based on Everything Else they have from cell towers to dna evidenced to, you know, just witness information and other things, that at the end of the day, they could establish this in her absence. I think thats what they will proceed to do but will look to see whether they establish contact with her at some point in the future. Scott, its clear that it according to what weve learned from police and the authorities, that the suspect was doing things to hide his behavior from his wife, night these cr righ . These crimes were committed sometimes while she was out of town, out of the country, he used Burner Phones as well. Is it pretty normal a lot of people say, how could a spouse not have any idea that their husband was a Serial Killer . Is it normal for that to be the case . Well, thanks for having me on. This actually is not surprising at all. A Serial Killer like this, who i believe is highly organized, a psychopath and probably whats known as a malignant narcissist, is able to compartmentalize. Hes a chameleon. Hes invisible in plain sight. So he is able to very convincingly function not only in public but at home. The Serial KillerDennis Raider who called himself bind, torture, kill, did the same thing. Tell us a little bit about these pictures. Weve seen them, youve seen them, the pictures inside of the house that have come out from the family, showing the aftermath of the police search, which was extensive, days long, cutting the section of the bath tub, ripping up the couch, what do you make of this . Well, obviously, theyre doing as extensive of a search as possible, and they never know what theyre going to find. Theyre looking for trophies. Serial killers like this keep jewelry, clothing, ids, photographs, hair clippings, you never know what theyre going to they might keep as a trophy, and any sort of evidence, of course, that links him not only to the three murders that hes been charged with, but potentially others, so yes, i mean, its a pretty horrific sight to look at, but this is not to be not to be unexpected because, again, this is the same thing they did with John Wayne Gacys house as well as btk. They need to do this to scour for evidence. And i do want to let our viewers know the Conference Hearing has just begun, so were going to be monitoring that and bringing you information about rex heuermanns appearance in court on long island. As this takes shape, right, this, obviously, is very preliminary part of his court appearances, joey, but there will be more. I wonder what youre anticipating from his defense . Yeah. I think they have a lot of work to do, obviously. These are the initial stages and i think this will be about the rules of engagement. Theres a lot of discovery that needs to take place. There are numerous bits of information, whether they be reports, whether they be analysis for hair fiber, dna, other types of samples and information that need to be turned over, those items need to be parsed, evaluated, reviewed by the actual Defense Attorneys. The prosecution has to file whats called the New York State certificate of compliance, meaning theyve given everything to the attorneys. I get into these weeds because this is important. At a preliminary review and conference like this, where is the discovery, the judge wants to know, how long is it going to take to turn over, how long will the defense need to assess it, what motions will the defense make to preclude certain evidence, challenge certain evidence. How long will it take to retain any Defense Experts that are necessary. What else is the next step and hearings be put in place for those purposes. Can we establish a trial date . A lot can be here in addition to the prosecutors potentially having other valuable information that they have to turn over. Yes, a Long Way To Go, but today could be significant in terms of setting the ground rules and seeing when information is going to be turned over and whats flex in the very long process. There are so many families watching this and not just the families of the gilgo four who have been looking for justice for their daughters, their sisters. There were a number of other bodies that were discovered along that stretch of Ocean Parkway on long island and theres so many other families and communities who may not even know that they have people missing, but people have been taken from them. In your opinion, do you think that there will be other victims, or do you think that this suspect may have stopped after this sort of what he was using as a Dumping Ground was discovered years ago . Well, those are great questions, and i suspect that he is responsible for at least some of the other bodies that were found right there in the vicinity of gilgo beach. Certainly gilgo number four i suspect there will be a charge there soon. But to your question of whether there are potentially other Burial Grounds and other bodies, i think its a distinct likelihood, more likely than not, in fact, and the reason why is the original gilgo four were discovered in December 2010 and two of those four actually went missing just a few months before they were discovered. So its very unlikely that he made a rationale choice to just stop killing because individuals like this have a compulsion, an inner drive, hunger to kill, that they cant control, so what is sadly and unfortunately more likely he moved his base of operations and there are probably bodies yet to be discovered elsewhere. Which is a terrifying thought, but we certainly hope for these families that they are getting more answers for themselves for other families as well. Thank you so much. We do appreciate your time this afternoon. Thank you. Jim . Right now, here in washington, a federal grand jury meeting in the Special Counsels ongoing 2020 election probe. We are watching this Federal Courthouse in washington very closely where grand jurors were just seen leaving. This in the Special Counsels January 6th Investigation. Sources tell cnn that donald trump and his advisors are right now getting preparations in place ahead of a potential indictment. Cnns paula reid joins us now. Shes been covering, paula, for the grand jury to leave that courthouse there, indicates their work is done for today . Is it an indication about a decision on an indictment . Reporter jim theres one detail weve learned from our colleagues at the courthouse, that is that the foreperson has remained behind and that is significant because you only need the foreperson when a grand jury returns an indictment. It is unclear if they have voted on an indictment of the former president or any of his allies. Thats what were waiting for and watching now. We do expect that the former president will likely be indicted in this investigation. He has received a target letter informing him hes a target of this investigation. He was also offered an opportunity to go before the grand jury and offer his side of the story. He declined that invitation and late last week his legal team met with jack smith and his team here in washington, d. C. Now sources tell cnn they did not expect the Defense Attorneys did not expect during that meeting they would be able to change the course of this investigation, but they were hoping at the very least to try to delay what appears to be inevitable. At this point we know the grand jury has left. The foreperson is still in the building. That is the only person you would need to return an indictment. Were just watching and waiting to see if they have voted to indict the former president or any of his associates. Now if the Special Counsel, if the grand jury has decided to indict, the former president and associates, how exactly would that word come out to us . Thats a great question, jim. This is unlike any other case. Even when it came to the maralago indictment, the way we expected it to happen was very different from how it actually played out. Usually this is something that would go under seal and we wouldnt learn about it until it was unsealed. That is what we expected to happen last time. Thats not exactly how it played out. The former president s attorneys we also expect would be notified of exactly whats going on. As you may remember in the maralago case, we first learned about the indictment from the former president. We expected if he gets any word of an indictment he would as he often does, go to social media to make the announcement himself. Its unclear if we would find out directly from the court, from the Special Counsel, or from former President Trump, but we are watching all three of those key players for any potential news on this indictment. How things usually work at the Federal Court is certainly not how it always works when it comes to the former president. No question. Of course we have our colleague inside the building there. Paula reid, thanks so much. Brianna, a lot to watch. And talk about here. Lets talk more about this with former Deputy Assistant attorney general tom dupree. Just when you think about, as we await a potential indictment here, how much could we learn from this, that we did not learn in the January 6th Hearings . My best guess is we will actually learn a good degree more than we learned from the January 6th Hearings. I say that both because the Special Counsel, as we know, has conducted a sprawling investigation. Hes cast a wide net. Hes talked to dozens of witnesses looked at presumably Hundreds Of Thousands of dollars and has a lot more information than the January 6th Committee did. Youll recall when the Special Counsel filed the maralago indictment he filed whats known as a speak indictment, to say it contained a lot of extra facts and detail that he didnt to include, but he wanted to include to make sure the public understood the evidentiary basis he had for bringing the charges. I suspect hes going to follow a similar approach if and when he indicts in connection with january 6th. Youre expecting this would be rather wholesome in what you would be able to read . I do. Youll recall in the maralago indictment, he actually had photographs of the classified documents. Again, he wasnt required to put those in the indictment, but he put them in kind of under the old thing that a picture is worth a thousand words. Putting in photographs like that would communicate his message, the evidence that he had collected so much more powerfully than merely trying to describe it in words. I think hes going to take the same approach if and when he indicts january 6th. At this point in time, the former President Trump is already looking at a may trial date in the other federal indictment in the classified documents case. You know, if and when he gets indicted for this January 6th Investigation, could that one reasonably go to trial before the election or do you just see that not being possible . I would say that is virtually impossible. Say that for a number of reasons. One is because as you note theres already a trial date, at least for now, scheduled in the maralago case. Hes also, of course, got the pending proceedings in new york and may have pending proceedings in georgia before too long. The other reason i suspect it will take longer to resolve the January 6th Case i think this prosecution, this indictment, almost has to be much broader in scope than all of the others. Certainly more so than maralago. When you think about the number of defendants the Special Counsel is likely to indict, the nature of the charges, the fact that it could encompass january 6th, january 6th it will, maybe subsequent to january 6th, its just going to be a much bigger case, a much bigger production and its hard to see how that gets fast tracked for a trial before the election. All right. Tom, if you can stand by for me. I want to bring in elaina near bedminster, new jersey. I know youre learning more about what trump and his team are doing to prepare during all of this. What can you tell us . Right. Well good afternoon, brianna. Donald trumps team very much expects that an indictment in this case is coming imminently. Theyve spent all day yesterday and most of today preparing for that scenario. Theyve already lined up a series of surrogates and influencers and allies they tell me, to be ready for when additional charges are filed by Special Counsel jack smith. They also have some prewritten statements and videos that theyre planning to release if and when an indictment is announced. So theyre very much gearing up for this scenario. Similarly, i think, you know, were going to see donald trump and his team, if and when these charges are announced, to use the playbook that hes used time and time again, which is to rail against these charges as being political. Hell call them election interference. Theyll also be going after Special Counsel jack smith directly, arguing that theyre focusing a lot of their attention on donald trump, but the Justice Department is not spending enough time looking into President Biden. I think youre going to hear them use the same lines of defense weve heard them use in addressing his legal troubles, but also, they do have a much more i think, you know, prepared way to respond to this than we have seen in the past. Brianna . So what is the expectation, assuming this does come down soon, i mean that is the expectation of former President Trump, hes made that clear, how does that play out in terms of his acknowledgement . Well, i think that hell definitely acknowledge this publicly, as weve seen donald trump do with the past two indictments hes faced, both in manhattan and also the federal one regarding the classified documents in his possession after he left the white house. Hell be responding to this in realtime. I think you can expect him to release something, some sort of statement on truth social. Im told that hes likely to do that once he learns he is going to be indicted in this January 6th Case. I think he has already Campaign Stops later this week. Hell be in alabama on friday, hell be in South Carolina on saturday, and you can very much expect him to talk about these charges during those events. So i think that his team is very much trying to get out in front of this. They want to be able to message around the charges, just as weve seen them do in the past. Thank you so much. Certainly this is something that President Trump and his team are preparing for. I want to bring tom dupree back in. You mentioned, tom, you know, assuming if and when we get this indictment, that you dont think they will be able to move quickly enough to have a trial before the election. With that in mind, do you think that doj moved too slowly here . Or were they diligent and took the time that they needed . What do you think . Well, look, i never like to criticize the Justice Department when its conducting a complex investigation of this nature. I mean, as we know, the January 6th Investigation was one of the biggest, if not the biggest investigation, in Justice Department history. That said, i do think they might have wanted to move a bit quicker for this exact reason. The fact that it took so long to collect the evidence and bring charges and remember, there were a lot of people including the state authorities in georgia who were critical of doj for not moving quicker on the january 6th indictment, and the fact that it has taken them this long and were now in a place in july, the year before an election year, with the elections right around the corner, august, with the elections right around the corner next year, its going to make it very difficult i think for the Justice Department, number one, to conduct a trial before the election. I think it its virally impossible that happens and that will raise other complications about if trump wins the election he likely will direct that charges be dismissed. If he were convicted he could pardon himself or try to do so. It raises a hosts of complications they could have avoided if they had moved quicker on this case. Yeah. Certainly does. A lot of challenges ahead on this timeline. Tom dupree, thank you so much for spending time with us this afternoon. We appreciate it. Jim . Com hire ukrainians are supposed to start training on the longanticipated f16s this month. Sources tell the u. S. They are still waiting on allies to submit a final Training Plan for those pilots. That not the only important detail that needs to be worked out still. Some two months after President Biden announced his support for ukraines use of the fighter jets. Cnn pentagon correspondent has been following this story. So orren, what specifically still needs to be worked out with this Training Plan . Jim, because the f16 is u. S. Technology, this whole process of getting them f16s, getting them simulators, training equipment, manuals, all of that has to be approved by the u. S. Its mostly European Countries that will be leading this, in particular denmark and romania. The problem is according to sources weve spoken to, the u. S. Hasnt gotten the Training Plans or the requests for equipment to approve yet so that process hasnt moved forward even as ukrainian and european officials says the Training Program for f16 pilots is scheduled to start this month. President joe biden announced the u. S. Would support this program two months ago, but it is essentially in limbo right now as it waits for the europeans to submit all of this information, all of these plans, that have to be approved at which point it can move forward. Last Month National security adviser Jake Sullivan said the u. S. Would support it in any and every way possible, it would not be the u. S. Holding up this training process. Listen, ukrainians have wanted this for a long time and already frustrated. I can imagine this is more frustrating now. How many pilots specifically are we talking about, ukrainian pilots, and how long is that expected to take . So this is an open question as well. One of the other parts of this process that has to be figured out and approved. The number is not expected to be large, and there are two limiting factors here. First, the number of aircraft, f16s ukraine is going to get and where theyre coming from, we dont know that, and second, this is perhaps the more important question, how many pilots ukraine can spare. Their air force still fighting and taking part in this war, so that, too, remains an open question. The number, according to two officials here, is expected to be fairly small, somewhere in the 10 to 12 range, give or take a little bit there. In terms of how long it will take, there isnt a specific number on that yet, but a danish spokesperson put forward at least a tentative plan that might be about six months or so, stripping out all the missions they dont need to learn such as air to air refueling to get them trained on f16s effectively as quickly as possible, jim. Thats a long timeline given the counteroffensive under way facing obstacles. Oweren lieberman, thanks so much. Joined by Nic Robertson in london. Speak now about ukrainian attacks inside moscow. This particular building, weve got pictures here now, is one that was struck twice, struck also over the weekend. Speaking to ukrainians do we know why this particular building . Well, the thing that theyre emphasizing here is the effect of Russia Prosecuting A War In Ukraine is being felt for the first time properly in the heart of russia and and thats something that ukrainian officials seem to attach importance to. You can certainly understand the emotional side of it because theyre getting in their cities and population are getting pummeled every day and president putin it tells his population that war in ukraine is going fine, but doesnt it tell them a lot of anything else, so heres ukraine putting a price, a political price, potentially, for President Putin In Moscow by scaring russian citizens and potentially putting their lives in danger. Look, i think whats significant here in moscow today is the kremlin seems to be playing this down. Theyre saying, look, we knew this was a possibility, you know, go talk to the military about it, nothing to see here so to speak. We moved our employees out of some of these buildings just over the weekend. But, you know, for ukraine, its not a Military Victory here. Theres no sort of big military targets in these buildings. Its a psychological impact that its having. It also shows weaknesses in russian air defenses considering not only have you had multiple attacks in the capital of russia, but even the kremlin, according to cnns reporting, the u. S. Assessment that it was likely ukraine carried out that attack on the kremlin. Have russian officials have any answers for what appear to be holes in their air and missile defenses . Yeah. There are two tracks here. Theres the cracks in their defenses and the cracks in their narrative and their narrative, their answers, dont add up. Because today you have the Ministry Of Defense saying, well there were three drones fired towards or sent towards moscow, and we shot two of them down and the other one we disrupted with electronic warfare, and it crashed. Back up here. The third one got through and hit the same building that was hit on sunday. That is pure chance . It seems not. And i think thats a point thats not lost on the russian population. They know that their leadership lies to them, but here again, this comes, you know, barely a month after there was a mutiny against putin, something people in russia didnt expect, now they didnt really expect to be under fire in moscow, now theyre being under fire and being told and they can see some people will be smart enough to see it, theyre being told lies. Their defenses arent strong in some areas. The ukrainians, perhaps, cant hit the kremlin anymore because perhaps there are electronic Counter Measures that will stop drones hitting, but ther savvy enough to know there are smart targets in moscow that perhaps havent been protected yet they can hit. Theres no doubt that russia will step up its defenses, but it all comes at a cost and as you say, the narrative doesnt add up. The cracks exist. Yeah. And information has been a front of this war since the beginning. Nic robertson in london, thanks so much. The Florida Governor has invited the Vice President to a meeting so that he can, quote, set the record straight on his states new black history curriculum. Harris is in florida today, but a meeting with desantis is not on her agenda. She has blasted these new guidelines they call, among other things, for the teaching of how enslaved people benefitted from slavery, how they learned skills that could benefit them. Jessica dean has been following the feud. Jessica, call me skeptical, but i dont think this invitation of hers hes really expecting shes going to accept this. This invitation he put out. You can tell if you read the letter its over the top. Do you have time, i know youre Vice President , but come on down here. He sent this letter to her kind of escalating this feud, and then we heard from him hes in New Hampshire where he is campaigning for president. Ill let you listen to what this is what desantis said a little bit earlier today. She came to florida to attack us and me but shes attacking people that worked hard on this. Its wrong to let false narratives stand and theyve been doing this to us for years from the white house and we fought back every time. Now lets put the money where the mouth is. So, brianna, desantis and his team have pointed to an ap course on African American history as having some similar language in it. They say that that is customary, that this belongs in this curriculum. As you can imagine, harris has fought back against that saying this is an unnecessary debate and, in fact, just a few moments ago, she spoke about this in florida. Here was her comment on his invitation to come tdown and kid of have a discussion about this issue. And now they attempt to legitimize these unnecessary debates with a proposal that most recently came in of a politically motivated roundtable. There is no roundtable no lecture, no invitation we will accept to debate an undeniable fact. There were no redeeming quality of slavery. And brianna, politically this is another example that were seeing of the Vice President becoming this Rapid Response voice for the administration, but also for the campaign as we move into, you know, a more acute phase of the 2024 campaign and really seeing her go after desantis and using her in this way to really push back. But for both sides, look, it benefits them politically to be having this debate. They feel like its a winner for them with their respective voters and supporters. So in that regard, you hear Kamala Harris going up against ron desantis on this, but its not just her. Theres also some republicans who are in opposition to these guidelines, right . Thats where were seeing desantis. He has that war going on on this front and then he turns this way and its republicans, people in his own party, including congressman from Florida Byron Donald who is supporting President Trump, but he kind of agreed with a lot of what they did with the department of education, but said that this piece of it that slavery benefitted the slaves in some way needed to go away and the Desantis Campaign went after him. Senator tim scott, a black republican senator from South Carolina, whos also running for president , one of desantis rivals, saying there is no Silver Lining in slavery. Then we see desantis kind of lumping them in with the Vice President , with democrats, what he calls, you know, d. C. Liberals. Very interesting stuff. Jessica dean, thank you for that. Jim . Now to some of the other headlines we are watching this hour. Lets go to suf folk county where the long island appearance has wrapped up and hear lawyers speaking afterwards. You know, this case, the charges in the indictment, are just allegations, so this is the first step in the process of proving those allegations, so we look forward to undertaking that process. You know, weve spoken to the victims. The victims are not going to be making any theyve elected not to make any statements to the media at this time. They want to maintain their privacy. They are interested in the case but theyre not going to be speaking to the media. So thats about it. [ inaudible ]. In court today . Do they want to be there for every update . Whats you know, as you can imagine, its a very personal, you know, thing for the victims families. Were going to support the victims families. They make the decision as to what they do, where they go, who they speak with. I would never speak for the attorneys im sorry the victims families, other than to say were going to support them in whatever it is that they want to do. Are you aware if they were here today . There was some Family Members of the victims who were here today. Which victims . Im not going to discuss that. Can you tell me what the order of protection you got the Defense Attorney to agree to . Theres certain conditions with regard to the disclosure of materials, and, you know, thats something that weve worked out that was something worked out between the court, Defense Counsel and ourselves, and thats standard procedure. And its under seal. You said it would take a whole month to go through im sorry. You said youre talking about 13 months of investigation so im not going to speak for Defense Counsel but suffice to say, it is a massive amount of material, and dont forget its continuing because the investigation is continuing, so were talking about a massive amount of material. Any of the you understand you want to keep it in place and expand through. Are you getting tips from other victims who may have been found on highways or roadways near where heuermann may have lived or frequented . Are you getting new tips that are valuable . We receive tips on, you know, in all cases at all times. We take those serious and we work through them, but we maintain the confidentiality of the investigation up until the time we can bring charges. Last it was basically what i just spoke to you all about, which was the discovery, schedule and the manner in which we were going to get this massive amount of discovery over to the defense. It has to be done in a way that makes sense for the defense but also makes sense for us, as well, so they can understand what they get and were able to catalog and identify, you know, what exactly it is we provided. You say that last time you say about the dna. Any progress on that. The investigation is continuing. But, you know, once that is concluded well have more to say but that is ongoing. Last week you say the scores of evidence collected at the massapequa area would take time to sift through. How much of what was was handed over was from last weeks search . So, you know, it was placed on the record, specifically what we turned over, which is part of the court record, i dont think anything specifically from the recent searches has been turned over. There are some reports that heuermanns exwife is upset at the way the house was effectively turned upside down. What is your response . She can pursue whatever remedies she feels are necessary. If things are proceeding as they have been, do you anticipate a trial . You do not anticipate a plea deal . I dont anticipate anything. I anticipate we have to show up every day and comply with our Discovery Requirements and, you know, well negotiate the case in good faith with the court and Defense Counsel and see how it plays out. What is it like for you as d. A. Ive led many case, last one being in 2019, so this is what we do as prosecutor. Is it imminent you might go before the grand jury to seek additional charges in this case . You know, as weve said we have, worked through the Grand Jury Process. That Grand Jury Process is continuing. The good thing about the Grand Jury Process, we can subpoena witnesses and evidence, but its also secret, so well maintain the secrecy of that grand jury until the grand jury has acted. When is were not going to discuss specific terms with regard to this or any other grand jury. What happens next on September 27th and what needs to happen between now and then . What needs to happen between now and then, we need to continue to comply with the Discovery Requirements. Were working with the court, were working with Defense Counsel. That Discoverly Barret will go out on a rolling basis. Its a tremendous amount of material so well continue to provide that, obviously, you know, the defense will need time to digest all that have which were giving. Do you anticipate a date for the end of discovery . Its going to take a while, and, you know, we just need to be productive, and thats something that well work out with regard to both the court and counsel. When we spoke at the home you said nothing jumped out initially from what you took from the home. Has that changed . So, when i say nothing jumps out, i mean, you know, you wait until all the facts are in, and then you draw conclusions from those facts, so we still have to continue to wait for all of that and not only the cataloging of the evidence but all of the Testing Including Forensic testing to get done which, unfortunately, you know, unlike sometimes on tv it just doesnt happen overnight. How long does the Forensic Testing it varies. Dee depends on whether its dna or Mitochondrial Dna or nuclear dna so its dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each individual piece of evidence, so we just have to wait for the process to play out. At least months certainly week. Some of the dna evidence is over a decade old. How confident are you of the methods the lab is using, some of it untested, some more modern in being clear . Extremely confident. Its all been tested. Its all been deemed admissible in courts of law across the United States so were confident in our science. And as far as the victims go, how many families were here . How many different families . So, thats a tough question to answer because i think there are people who are physically here, i can tell you that we have great dialogue with all of the victims families and theyre all supporting in one way or the other, so im not going to get into specifics with specifically who is here and who is not here, but what i will say is the victims families are interested and engaged. Can you give us some idea of the timetable, discovery once a month or what weav have said we are listening to the Press Conference coming to us from long island. This is the District Attorney of suffolk county, raymond tierney, talking after this hearing where the long island serial killing suspect, rex heuermann, appeared in court. He, of course, is charged with the murders of three women, and remains the Prime Suspect in the murder of maureen brainardbarnes. What we are hearing there is really just a lot of discussion about the discovery process. Theres so much evidence in this case and its being turned over to the defense at this point in time obviously going to be a very complex case and we learned that some of the victims Family Members were there at the court today, many of them have talked about the relief that they have found after so many years, more than a decade, of there being someone arrested and this very Detailed Police work being done to find in this case rex heuermann, the suspect n. This case. Well continue to follow this and well be right back. Ah,
