Story. I will see you next time. Hello and welcome, everyone. I Michael Homes with the latest on the israel hamas war. The conflict continues to escalate amid dozens of airstrikes carried out by the a df on sunday. They clashed with israeli troops inside gaza. Benjamin netanyahu spoke to troops in Northern Israel, reiterating the stakes of the current initiative. You fought with exemplary heroism in gaza. Your stories are inspirational. I know you lost comrades. This is very difficult, but we are fighting for our lives and our home. This is no exaggeration. This is war. We are in a double battle. One is here and the other is to win a Crushing Victory that will erase hamas. Mr. Netanyahu also met with the war cabinet sunday to discuss security and the Defense Minister of the country says it is likely that the invasion of gaza needs to be israels last moves inside the reason region, vowing hamas will not be around for long. A second convoy met with at least 14 aid trucks at the rafa Border Crossing as President Biden and mr. Netanyahu affirmed that a flow of humanitarian aid will continue. Here is more. Elliott, everyone is anxious about the start of a ground operation. There has been this heavy shelling in the north of gaza. What do we know about what might be to come and win . Reporter not a huge amount, to be perfectly honest. As nick was reporting, the most intense bombardments since the Terrorist Attack on october 7 were with airstrikes. There were also the first skirmishes on the ground inside the gaza strip between israeli troops and hamas militants in that clash. One idf soldier was killed and three were injured. Hamas says it managed to destroy a couple of bulldozers and a thank. This does not seem to be the starting gun of a Ground Invasion. There could be all manner of reasons as to why it has not happened just yet. There could be a try to release more hostages, for example. We dont know how and when israel is going to go in. They are adamant that they will go in at some point. It is what the israeli public will be demanding giving the gravity of the attack and Hamas Holding those 200 hostages inside the gaza strip. Right now, we still dont know when this is going to happen. The u. S. Reportedly wants a delay in a ground offensive. How much influence does the u. S. Have on what israel might be wanting to do . Reporter it has a huge amount of influence, michael, but up to a point. Secretary of state Antony Blinken was pointedly asked this question, to which he replied that this is a decision of israel to make. From israels perspective, they say these reported delays are hamas propaganda. It has been their request to delay. There was some delay when President Biden came to town. Israel was hardly going to go in on the ground while the president of the United States, israels most important ally was in town. It does seem, we understand, that the u. S. Has been pressing israel for a delay. They will try to secure the release of more hostages in order to enable more humanitarian aid to go in and to provide safe passage for Palestinian Civilians to get out of the gaza strip. But certainly there is a possibility that there has been a delay, giving israel more cause for thought as to how precisely he wants to go in. Israel is trying to gather intelligence and make a final decision on that and act on that decision. Whether there is more of a delay for the reasons i outlined from the u. S. Or other operational reasons, we dont know all we know for now is that there has been talking about this Ground Invasion for more than a week now. It still has not happened. We expect it to happen. It is a question of when rather than if. We simply dont know the timing. Israel is not going to give anything away. For now, we are still seeing airstrikes and the gaza strip being pummeled. Israel say they are trying to clear out militants, target commanders, target infrastructure, and target weapons. At the same time, they are concerned about the Tunnel System that hamas maintains underneath the gaza strip and the people being held, the more than 200 people being held hostage by hamas, as well. We expect israel to go in on the ground at some point. Thank you for the update. Aid workers say the situation in gaza has become a humanitarian catastrophe. Ellis thinning Officials Say more than 4600 people are being killed in gaza as the war started. Among them, 1000 women, nearly 2000 children. A warning that we are about to show you some images you might find disturbing. Parents in gaza are writing their childrens names on their legs and arms in case they need to be identified in case they or their family should be killed. A cnn photographer captured these images of dead children with names written on their legs. As israel has been ramping up its aerial bombardment, hospitals in gaza have been overwhelmed with casualties. One hospital official summed it up in two words bloody sunday. Reporter it is impossible for any hospital in the world to admit these number of injured. It is impossible to work with these large numbers of injured. Every injured person needs four or five specialized surgeons. This puts a large medical burden on the crew. We cannot offer the same Ethical Services in a war zone that you would give to patients in a normal situation. Injuries are in the dozens. There is no room or hospital bed for these injuries. Each is waiting their turn for an operation. The situation is catastrophic. Joining me now from australia is james elder, spokesperson for unicef. Thank you for making the time. I know you are between flights at the moment. According to the Palestinian Foreign ministry, nearly 4700 dead, 13,500 wounded, and nearly 2000 children dead. They are staggering numbers. This is a video of wounded being treated on hospital floors. Give us a sense from your perspective of how desperate the situation is and how much worse it could get yeah, michael, you are right. The reported numbers of children who have been killed, and you just showed some imagery there in gaza, it is almost incomprehensible. The fact remains that without a ceasefire, without a massive increase in aid, we will see the number of children, Boys And Girls in gaza, we will see that number skyrocket. We urge a massive increase in aid there. It is a Matter Of Life And Death now, as there are shortages. It can unfortunately get much worse. It is hard to say that when you quote the numbers you say of children being killed. There is no doubt that the situation can get much worse for them, because the amount of aid they need right now, there are not nearly enough. Unicef has enough aid for a quarter of 1 Million People. We can get that aid to gaza in a matter of hours. We cannot do that right now. We need unconditional aid. We need a ceasefire. The children of gaza need it yesterday. When you talk about the wounded, and some of the images are hard to watch. Some of them we just cannot air. Is there any way to know how many of the wounded need outside treatment or surgery that they are not able to get in gaza . With all of these things, the numbers are difficult. We know it is thousands right now. We have heard all week that there are more people than Hospital Beds. They are running out of essential medicines. We have children on incubators and they are going to be off of generators soon. Doctors will have to choose who lives and who dies. If you can just imagine the life of a little 12yearold girl in gaza, she has already been through violent situations like this over her life. Right now, nothing compares to this. There is a high chance she has seen someone killed. Maybe she is injured herself. She is hiding and trying to move because 1 Million People were told to evacuate. This is a trauma that is not going anywhere. She is simply trying to stay alive, under bombardment, without water. It gets difficult to over explain it. It is what unicef has been saying since day one. Cease fire, unconditional aid, and while we are talking about this, unconditional release of these hostages, some of them who are children. Them back to their families now in israel. Water, food, medical supplies are all crucial crucial. But the u. N. Has said, i think the quote was, without fuel, there will be no water and no functioning hospitals. Without fuel, you wont get aid to civilians. None of that is coming in these two small convoys. How crucial is fuel given what it is used for . You are so right. These early trucks, they are a flicker of hope. There is no doubt. But the despair and death dominates right now in gaza. Fuel is absolutely critical. It is for the generators to pump water to people and to turn on the water supply again. Otherwise, we will see children die of dehydration. Get fuel to hospitals so we can power incubators, emergency medical supplies. The secretarygeneral talks that we need a minimum of 100 trucks a day going into gaza. We are seeing a drop in the ocean when it comes to that. The children of gaza are seeing many more bombs than they are trucks of aid. One final thing. At unicef, kids are your focus. I saw a video of a nineyear old boy Walking Around bodies looking for his family. He opened up the shroud to look at faces until he found his mother, and then kissed her face. It makes me wonder, what is going to be the psychological need when this is all over . That kind of trauma is hard. It is from both sides, too. Kids saw horrible things on the other side of the border, as well. You could not be more right. You put a chill in my spine with that. The Children Of Israel saw horrendous things two weeks ago. They need time to recover, need that psychological support. They too need peace. They need to know that there will be no rockets coming across their country. For the children in gaza, the trauma is probably not at levels we have ever seen before. Yes, at unicef, we are at the frontline. We have colleagues in gaza. The longer that the fighting goes on, the longer the intensity, the longer we wait for the adults to bring a cease fire for these children, the more ingrained packets. It has social and longterm effects. We know the young population of gaza can offer so much. If the bombardment continues, their trauma is something they will carry with them for a long time. James elder with unicef, thank you and thank you for the work your organization and others are doing. Appreciate it. Due to evacuation orders, many towns along the israel lebanon border are all but empty. Here is the latest. Reporter it is very quiet in Northern Israel. That is mainly because the vast majority of the population of this city of more than 20,000 people have gone. They have been evacuated. That is true of villages all across this area close to the lebanese border. There has been an order from the Israeli Government for civilians to leave because of the growing threat of Rocket Attacks and other kinds of attacks from Southern Lebanon, where hamas controls the territory. Indeed, the Israeli Military says these attacks have been increasing over the course of the past week or so. There are Drone Attacks taking place. Drone flights are taking place across Northern Israel from lebanese territory. Antitank missiles are being fired at israeli installations along the border. There have been infiltrations of gunmen from the lebanese side into israel. The israelis have responded in kind. They have been pounding areas with artillery strikes and airstrikes inside Southern Lebanon and syria, as well. We are very close to the border with syria also. They are warning lebanon and hezbollah that if this continues or if it escalates, there will be a very strong response in deed from the Israeli Military. They say they dont want a second front to open up. They are focusing on the south and preparing for that operation. But they have moved Tens Of Thousands of troops at least into this region. That is in preparation for what they say will be a very determined and strong and destructive response against hezbollah and against lebanon if the attacks from that southern part of the country persist or escalate. Still to come, after so much anguish and loss, a story of bravery and triumph out of Southern Israel. That is just ahead. A group of brave volunteers managed to fight off more than 30 Hamas Terrorists during that Surprise Attack just over two weeks ago. Incredibly, no one inside the small kibbutz in Southern Israel was killed. Erin burnett spoke with some of the heroes of the community. You are at the gate they tried to come in the vehicle. We saw all the burnedout cars they used to block. You were able to stop that. They burst through the gate. And we have footage of some of this from the security cameras. Exactly. They were actually shooting antitank missiles on the gate. There was actual carnage going on outside the gate. People were trying to rush in from the party, people who were just driving. They were trying to come in for safety. The gate was closed. They could not see the terrorists. They ran to the gate and were being shot at from short distance. The terrorists at the gate were trying to comment. They were picking them off as they run in. They were taking cover around the gate from the outside. And firing on them. And firing on civilians that tried to run through the gate. They went down to make sure they were dead. They were engaging. There was a small bomb shelter outside the gate. Some of the Party Members were hiding there. You can see a group of terrorists going in and mass occurring there. They threw Hand Grenades into the shelter. You can see in the movie, the security movie. You can see they were throwing Hand Grenades inside. I went out solo and started moving towards the main gate, but not in a straight line. I went through the houses. I got two parking lot number two, which is there. There is a small hill over watching it. There were three guys wearing black, looking at the road. I was not sure if these were our people. At the moment they turned around, they saw ak47s. And you all had m16s. All of you. In israel, we dont use ak 47s. It is not us. We shot at this group. One of them got hit. The other two scattered. Do you have any idea, obviously you had m16s. You had magazines. But just a sense of this went on for hours. How many bullets did you even shoot . Do you have any idea . No. I shot 240 bullets. I knew that i only had six magazines. I counted every bullet. I knew that i could not shoot i have a backup or Something Like that. I have been shooting every bullet with its own target. I did not just shoot to make them lie down. You had to shoot to kill. I had to shoot to kill. I know you all know. This is what was found on them. At least on somebody, right . These were their plans of what they were going to do. I was just reading through it. It is dated october 2022. The fact that they were planning it for a whole year, the details in here. I want to ask you one specific thing. They knew everything. Except our names. They put their Phone Numbers and here. They put the task, the 19, braid b 14. God is great. They label it all. They have the cameras that are going to be visible, who is going to come help you. I wanted to ask you about this. This is what theyre going to do at the kibbutz. They had it in the directory. Now that you see this and you saw them, were they trying to execute this plan . Exactly. Their plan was to engage the security group, throw open the main gates to allow vehicles in, to sabotage the main power in the generator, and to make as many casualties from the Security Team to allow the second wave to go in. The fact that they know the exact street of where to go, where the generator is. Street by street. That is exactly where they were executing. They came to the exact points where the gates are. The point beside my house is the gate. It is a small gate, but it is closed. It is in the plan. I actually saw a page. I saw symbols. Arrows and the gate. When you sit here now and you think about it, they did not just plan and train. This is a military. How do you even react to that . This took the date is october 2022. It is terrifying. It is a military plan. The competence, they were trained on it. It is quite clear that they were new exactly what they were doing. They were disciplined. This is a military plan. That is erin burnett reporting. Thousands of israeli troops are massing at the border with gaza for days now. We will have a report ahead on the apparent delay on that expected incursion. More on our top story this hour, the ongoing conflict between israel and hamas. Hamas fighters and Israeli Forces engaged in limited clashes inside gaza on sunday, the Israel Military engaging in airstrikes, warning of the next stage of the attack against hamas. We spoke earlier with an official. Israeli troops are equipped, trained, and ready to conduct Major Military operations. Until that happens, we continue to target hamas leaders, their infrastructure, their logistics, and all of their other military components in the gaza strip as we speak, we are hunting commanders. The aim, maybe other things are discussed, but the aim is very clear. We need to change the Security Situation in gaza and make sure that the end of this campaign, hamas does not exist. Meanwhile, at least 14 humanitarian relief trucks entered the gaza strip through egypt. It did contain some food and some medicine. These trucks arrived today after a convoy of 20 egyptian trucks unloaded aid in gaza using the same crossing. The anticipated Israeli Ground incursion into gaza appears inevitable, if uncertain. Nick robertson is near the border with gaza and has more. Reporter wrestling with battle ready troops, the fields north of gaza churn with a controlled fury of a nation ready for an incursion to strike hamas. Yet they are waiting with no explanation why. It feels like the early rush of Battle Readiness has passed. The troops are deployed, standing by. The question is, how long can they be kept out here . According to a former idf general, as long as is needed. We are now improving our intelligence and our capacity of targets. Reporter but the political calculation here is more complicated. I think both in washington and in jerusalem, they are the same. There is a legitimate Station Window that is closing quickly. Reporter civilian losses in gaza are growing, more than a third of them children according to Palestinian Health officials. Lengthy negotiations had led to two american hostages released. There is a tiny amount of humanitarian aid crossing into gaza. Israel fears that it will end up in the hands of hamas. Benjamin netanyahus calculus of when to send in Ground Troops has never been so fraught , under pressure from the white house for more hostage releases. Netanyahu has a big problem. He cannot say no to joe biden, but he cannot say yes to the humanitarian aid that drifts into northern gaza. Reporter he is also under pressure at home, too. Military and others are hawkish for a decisive blow against hamas. We are finishing preparing the ground force. We have changed plans. We are going toward heavy maneuvering. Reporter the dilemma is compounded by his dependence on american weapons. The pressure from washington is real. It is real and strong. The Prime Minister says many times to his ministers, listen, we are getting from the United States more than you know. Reporter where less than a week ago, these fields were teeming with thanks, troops making lastminute repairs, today there are just tracks in the sand. There is a jacket of a soldier here, bread and a bag on the table. Where have all the thanks gone . Are they ready for an incursion or pausing . Close to the gaza border these days, more questions than answers these days. An incursion is still highly probable, but when . Nic robertson, israel. Aid might be arriving in gaza, workers say the supplies are not nearly enough. Earlier, i spoke with a palestinian journalist in washington who told us about the challenges her family is facing in gaza amid this humanitarian crisis. They lost all power. They had a little bit last week. They have no more. They have a little bit of water. The wife of my cousin does not have any way to make formula for her infant twins. And yet the children keep saying to me, they have names. They have lives. He wants a rubiks cube when this is all over. He keeps saying that we are watching this unfold on our screens. Meanwhile, humanitarian aid is being weaponized. I feel like i am in some kind of twisted, well he in reality right now. Yeah. Meanwhile, officials here are discussing not whether there should be a ceasefire, but how many leaders and walls are of water each person in gaza should be getting. I cannot imagine what it is like to sit and watch from afar. You made the point that israel is warning palestinians to evacuate south, even though their Hitting Targets in the south. These flyers are interesting. We confirmed them and translated them. They are tell us seen telling us that the could be partners to the terrorist organizations. What is the reaction of your family to that sort of warning . They were aghast. My cousin sent me a video of her rocking her infant twins and saying, now we are essentially being told that we either leave our home by force and get displaced and join 1 million others without food or access to water, or we are terrorists . She literally had no words. She said, we are going to stay right here and die in the dignity of our own homes but i am not saying this with exaggeration. Im expecting to hear their names on the news that i get minute by minute. We lost several members of the family of my mother in the south. We found out very Close Friends in central gaza were also lost. Lalia alhaddad speaking with me earlier. When we come back, frustration boils over among u. S. Republicans as they struggle to elect a speaker of the house. Still to come, argentinas president ial race heading to a runoff between these two men after neither won enough votes to win outright. A detroit Synagogue Leader who was killed over the weekend is being mourned by her friends and family. She was found stabbed to Death Outside of her home. Police say they discovered a trail of blood leading to the house where they believe the crime happened. At a Memorial Service on sunday, she was remembered as a model citizen who was endlessly positive and loved, bridging divides. Samantha woll may have been the nicest person that i have ever met or will ever meet in my life time. Sam did more for our community, our state, our world, our lives. She did more in her short time here on earth than most will ever accomplish in 1000 lifetimes. Her killer will not rob us of the memory of her joy and warmth and kindness that she leaves behind. She had led a synagogue in detroit since 2022. The police chief says they are still investigating her death. They have no evidence to suggest it was motivated by antisemitism as of now. In washington, nine republicans have entered the race for the speaker of the house of representatives, round four. They will make their case before the republican conference later today after jen jordan failed three times to win a spot last week. The house has been paralyzed without a speaker for nearly 3 weeks now. Kevin mccarthy himself calls it embarrassing. Here is more. Reporter House Republicans remain in turmoil almost 3 weeks after the unprecedented ouster of a sitting speaker. Kevin mccarthy was pushed out after eight republicans joined with democrats and voted out Kevin Mccarthy as speaker. This was initiated by House Republicans. They have not been able to coalesce around anyone to replace mccarthy as of yet. The house cannot do any business until a speaker is elected. They have been unable to unite behind any candidate. First, they nominated steve scalise, the House Republican majority leader. He was unable to get the votes to be elected speaker. Jen jordan, the House Judiciary Committee chairman was nominated to be the next speaker of the house. He went to the floor three times and he failed to win over enough support. You can only fail to lose four republican votes. He lost 25 on his third ballot. He stepped aside. Now nine republican candidates have filed to run for speaker. It is unclear which of those nine will ultimately get the republican nomination and, more importantly, who can get the 217 votes they would need on the floor the house to be elected speaker. It is unclear if any of them can given the sharp divisions within the ranks. This is the biggest f you to Republican Voters i have ever seen. This conference is absolutely broken. Most americans are sick of it. It is time for big boys and the girls to stop with the nonsense. We need to get over it and move on. We have an entire branch of government offline. We need to get our act together. I am getting calls for my constituents. I think history will assign the blame in the right places. Reporter on monday evening, House Republicans will meet Behind Closed Doors yet again. Those candidates will try to make their pitch to the conference. They will answer questions from their members. They will do that one by one. We will see how that ultimately goes. Tuesday morning is the significant vote. Republicans will have a secret ballot leadership election. The majority of their conference will vote to nominate the next speaker candidate. That person, it will be a secret ballot election, so itd be unclear who will emerge. We will see how close that person gets to the magic number on the house floor, 217 votes, to be elected speaker. This is challenging for any republican candidate. There are only 221 republicans. Democrats will vote for hakeem jeffries. The republican nominee must limit the factions in the ranks. It is unclear if any of them will be able to do that after we have seen republicans going after each other after mccarthy was pushed out, unable to get behind anyone, unable to do the business of the nation. Much business is waiting, aid to israel, calls for a two ukraine, avoiding a Government Shutdown by late november. None of that can be done. The republican agenda is completely stalled a missed this gop leadership in fighting. Can they get it resolved this coming week . There is a possibility that could still be unresolved and sent to another week if they cannot get their act together behind the nominee. Cnn, capitol hill. Argentinas president ial race is headed to a runoff according to partial results from sundays first round. Far right economist javier milei , one of the candidates in the second round next month, his supporters celebrated after his shocking win in the primaries back in early august he will be going up against the economy minister, sergio massa. With 90 of the votes counted, sergio massa leads with 36 to 30 for javier milei. The candidate who wins the runoff will begin a fouryear term on december 10. Here on has given sentences to two journalists. A man died in the custody of the socalled Morality Police last year, his death sparking protests across iran. The two journalists were charged and convicted for cooperating with a hostile u. S. Government and collusion and propaganda against iran. Just ahead, an inside look in a unique hospital in israel. How doctors are treating patients underground as the war rages on the surface. The french president and dutch Prime Minister are expected to visit israel in the coming hours, according to the israeli Prime Ministers office, Emmanuel Macron and mark ritter will arrive on monday where they will meet with benjamin netanyahu. Other european leaders joined the u. S. And canada in a joint statement on the conflict, affirming their support for israel and also calling for the adherence to humanitarian law, including the protection of civilians. Sunday was a day of global protest as Tens Of Thousands marched in support of palestinians. Free palestine free free palestine free free palestine in brussels, demonstrators gathered outside the European Commission headquarters, calling for a ceasefire. And in sarajevo, thousands were seen waving palestinian and bosnian flag, also demanding a halt to the israeli air strikes on gaza. Now as israel grapples with the fallout from the hamas attack on october 7, one hospital in tel aviv is taking care of patients in a unique way. Cnns sara sidner takes us inside this hospital sheltering people underground. Reporter a doctor checks in on a patient. Just an ordinary day in the hospital. Except there is nothing ordinary about where this is taking place. This is the bunker underground hospital. This is a functioning hospital in the highest level. Every service, every technology, everything that they need, we provide them. And everything has been supplied here. Reporter it has the look and the feel of a regular hospital with all the things that youd expect, except for when you turn the corn. And you can really see this is an underground Parking Garage. At least it was. The Parking Spaces are now for patient beds, driveways for push carts. This is how tel avivs Medical Center is preparing to treat patients in wartime. Its as perfectly normal as usual in the most abnormal scenario. Exactly. This is the right phrase to put it. Reporter this is the result of 14 years of planning for war. We planned this underground hospital 14 years ago, more or less after the second lebanon war. Tel aviv was for the first time got missile attack. Reporter that was then, before hamas stormed across the border by land, air and sea on chabot, killing, kidnapping, and maiming men, women and children. Several floors above the hospital bunker, 60 Hospital Beds are now filled with victims from the hamas attack. I went to a party with my friends. It was a music festival. And 6 30, Something Like that, alarms started. Reporter he and his friends managed to jump in their car, but then there was a squad of terrorists just started spraying at us, shooting without conscience. Shooting at you, indiscriminate. Yes, just shooting without conscience. Reporter his car among those abandoned on the side of the road. He ran and hid for the next five hours, blood pouring from his arm with a bullet smashed through his skin and bone. There is no one in this world that wants peace more than i do. Trust me. Ive been in the army. I got shot over this. I dont want this. None of us wanted this to happen. Reporter do you still think that peace is possible . Wow. I used to believe in peace all the time, but right now, after what i saw, the israel said something very important. He said peace you dont make friends, you make enemies. But even ennys need to be human beings. Reporter no matter who you are, this hospital will treat you, deep below the earths crust. It has already moved a whole section of the hospital to get the staff and patients prepared for life below during war. What do you think about being in a Parking Garage . He is enjoying every minute of it. Reporter does this feel different this time . It feels different because we know its not like kind of a limited operation. Its a wartime. Sara sidner reporting from tel aviv there. And finally, the New York Giants on sunday honored the 10 Americans Still unaccounted for after the hamas terror attacks. The team displayed american flags in ten empty seats at Metlife Stadium in east rutherford, new jersey. The giants were hosting the washington commanders. Hamas released two Americans Last week. But the u. S. Secretary of state says ten other americans are unaccounted for, and that at least some of them are being held hostage. Thanks for spending part of your day with me. Im michael holmes. I will be back after the break with more news on the israelhamas war. Nothing can prepare you for this kind of brutality. None of us wanted this to happen. They took babies after they killed their children. Something none of us can imagine. Humanitarian conditions there grow more dire. Are you hopeful still that hezbollah will stay active after this war . Im sara sidner in tel aviv with cnns breaking News Coverage of israel at war
