The g7 speakers meeting. Thank you. We send our regards to you. Thank you all for your critical participation in todays meeting, enhance five participation from leaders in diverse communities. We are blessed to be joined by his holiness, the dalai lama. Ago, he became the first Nobel Laureate on the basis of his environmental advocate efficacy. Evergrowing impact of signs on our lives, religion and suit spirituality have a greater role to play by reminding us of our humanity. There is no contradiction between the two, he said. He went on to say this understanding is crucial if we are to take positive and Decisive Action on concern with the environment. Words resonate with great urgency. The Climate Crisis israel and its consequences are undeniable. Rising sea levels, horrific floods,s, devastating and air pollution will impact every nation on every continent and every year, the crisis accelerates. There is no time to deny the reality of the crisis, which jeopardizes the Public Health of our communities, threatening clean air and water, and the Economic Security of our family. If temperatures rise to 40 degrees celsius above preindustrial levels by 2100, Global Economic losses could exceed 20 trillion for a year. The u. S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission issued a of at warning a fennec financial hazard from the chronic right Climate Crisis including frequent and devastating shocks from Climate Change cannot sustain the fundamental conditions supporting the Climate Crisis jeopardizes the National Security of our country. That sealeaders warned will cause competition for habitat and resources with millions displaced in the crisis undermines the moral obligation on for futures it generations in a responsible way. The Climate Crisis also presents serious challenges to securing justice in our community. The Climate Crisis testers every community but does not do so equally. If we do not act, the most of developing a developing nations and communities of color, will be further economically disadvantaged. That is why after our conversations last year at the g7 speakers meeting, i announced that the theme would be addressing the Climate Crisis with Economic Justice for all. Suggesteder, the fed shining a light on the disparities in health and Economic Security in our community. It is a sad and shocking truth that communities of color and lowincome communities are particularly vulnerable in terms of health and Economic Security asthe viruss impact, just they are vulnerable to the impasse of the Climate Crisis. Developing nations contribute the least to the Climate Crisis and a disproportionately high impact. Families living in poverty disproportionately live in areas vulnerable to climate hazards. Those families have fewer resources to prepare and recover from events and those without access to quality of care are more vulnerable to both the Climate Crisis and the coronavirus. Yet, if we act urgently and boldly, we have the opportunity or justice and health care. By taking bold action against the coronavirus and the Climate Crisis, we can say both lives and livelihoods. Approach toategic these challenges provides the opportunity to get people back to work and School Safely to boost the economy. We also relate of future foundation for a resilient, equitable economy for all communities. This is not the work of a single year or a single nation, but instead requires a longterm commitment to ensure the benefits are shared by all. As the covid19 pandemic has shown, we can only solve the challenges facing our Global Community with a coordinated, international response. Until the virus and the Climate Crisis are just everywhere, they are not solved anywhere addressed everywhere, they are not solved anywhere. It is projected that an initial additional 1. 9 Million Deaths will occur in 2021 from covid19, bringing the total to 2. 8 millione people. Our hopes and prayers are to produce a vaccine that is safe and effective urgently. As soon as that efficacy is achieved, we will have an ethical distribution of the vaccine around the world. Until then, we must follow social distancing guidelines for testing, tracing, treatment, social distancing, sanitation, and mass wearing. Mask wearing. The g7 nations have a partner in the american people, particularly our young people who are demanding Climate Action now. These were my issues when i was first we achieved landmark achievements. I opened my remarks by referencing his holiness the dalai lama and his beautiful message about the connection between faith and science in protecting the environment. I want to close by quoting, when he came to this meeting at the capital five years ago. Wrote, the he climate is a common good. Longing to all and meant for all. Yourotect that common good, need to have a conversation that includes everyone since the environmental challenge that we are undergoing and its human route concerns human root concerns and affects us. This is our charge. Throught determination to advance a much Better Future for all members of our collective global family. Speakers toe the begin their opening remarks, beginning with japan, who has had more than 45 years of public service. Oshima has been critical in addressing environmental challenges, whether as director general of science and technology, mr. Of agriculture and fishery, and now as speaker. Tonow youll to you yield you. [speaking foreign language] thank you very much. As Speaker Pelosi mentioned, the coronavirus is having a serious impact on our societies and economies. Madecal distancing has situations difficult. Is noe g7 meeting exception. And yet, thanks to this new online format, i feel were entering a significant new era. Would like to express my foritude to Speaker Pelosi providing this variable opportunity. For the Climate Crisis. We are experiencing various taking what is there is into account, a possibility we are facing, so we are facing enormous damage. The Climate Crisis poses a threat to Sustainable Growth and concerns about our survival. We do for the Climate Crisis is that we have to consider this as a crisis of humankind or the globe. We have to share this understanding, which is very important. Let me share some numbers with you. Report said that according 80the Global Warming, Million People will lose their jobs. Financialon dollars damage. People,ovid19 affected millionmore than 28 people infected. And we have more than 900,000 people who lst their lives. Lives. Their what we do for covid19, country each country has to do their best, but at the same time inhave to tackle this issue cooperation with each other. This is a new challenge in front of us. People inly for developing countries. Economic vulnerables, for these people, what we can do. Challengeother big were having. Areddition to that, there two crises. Which are related to the crisis of democracy. Theackling these issues, so the government has been dealing with this pandemic. Democracy and free and vibrant societies. Again, for once the Environmental Crisis and the covid19 crisis, multinational internationalnd something thate have to be done to overcome the crisis. So under the issue mentioned by Speaker Pelosi for the Environmental Crisis in the covid19 crisis and the covid19 crisis were formed, inch is very variable and order to share the same understanding for each country, i believe this is going to be a variable session once again. Thank you very much. Conclude my to remarks. Thznank you. Pelosi thank you very much for your important statement. I want to introduce our next speaker. For 50 years, the president has served the german people and continues to be a leading voice advocating for International Cooperation to lower emissions and combat the Climate Crisis. D, notrecently sai protecting it will be more expensive. It was my privilege to join his security conference and now, it is my honor to invite him to give opening remarks. Mr. President. [speaking foreign language] colleagues, thank you very much. It is wonderful to be here. Unfortunately, we are not able to sit at the same table today comeut we together in what we call the west, which nonetheless represents a community of values. These are the respect for Human Dignity and freedom, democratic order, rule of law, and this community is above all characterized by an ability to self reflect and to selfcorrect, which is something that authoritarian rule is not capable of. We are talking about today, our topic, is particularly important. Said herself and as she put onto the agenda today. For our meeting clear before covid19. There was a tendency that we had why, when and that is we are attempting to revive our economic systems, we need to correct the excesses of globalization where they have led to the effects of that we see in the wake of the pandemic. And we need to pay particular attention to the social and environmental sustainability of ste systems these sympto ems. We need to take charge. Assuming taking response ability for our own environmental footprint. Our own skills and at the same time, being conscious of the fact that the credibility of our principles are at stake. Reprievewas a slight in the race against the collapse of our climate and natural warm ent, and it is it is time that we want something more in the long term. Won anything at all. Facingocracies are still difficult decisions ahead of us. There will be controversial debate about how we fundamentally adapt our economic and financial systems, change our behavior as consumers, and also the legitimate urge that people have two achieve prosperity through growth and how that can be combined with sustainability. There are no simple answers to this. And there is no one single answer. Instead, it is much more about different points of view and perspective. Conflictingcerns, yet legitimate interests, and countries, butn also within our societies and also between the generations. We have seen in these recent days. Must engage in these discussions. With passion in our parliament. They will actually take on a key role because these different positions and interests must be negotiated in public. Have thesen you difficult processes, that its clear they are transparent and comfortable to all why decisions one made on the spaces this basis. It is the only way that we find this among the general public, as we need that acceptance because of the magnitude and t hat requires us to be honest. Honestly saying there will be no progress without sacrifice or restrictions. And if we do free, itg, it will help us will hurt us more dearly down the line. Nobody can manage these complex tasks on their own or alone. That is why our meeting is all the more valuable. I would like to thank you, nancy pelosi, for making this exchange possible under very difficult circumstances. You. Pelosi thank you, mr. President , for your presentation. President welcome the of italy. He has been involved in the engagement of the issues facing our world. As the president of the Italian Chamber of deputy, he has led old action against the fight against the Climate Crisis. President pico, i yield to you. [speaking foreign language] good morning, everyone. Spould like to greet you, eaker pelosi, with great affection. Thank you for organizing this meeting in this emergency. Bringing us all together during thisernational crisis to very strong virus. There is no doubt that today, more than ever, this meeting of the speakers of the house, of importantkes on an fundamental importance. I agree that we all have to come together in a community of values. In this community, we have to have more democracy. I believe that parliament have been very strong. Time thatns at a is so difficult, i believe that con for all bea citizens. I also believe that at this time, people, the population of these countries no that institutions have to be there. They have to be strong and they have to be democratic. From this point of view, i remember when we met and before that in canada, we never thought that today, we would have met a video online. A we spoke about the climate, about the oceans number the , and a planthe seas for our planet that perhaps we were going in the wrong direction. I think that the coronavirus also shows us what this model of society, this model of consumerism, these things that we as a society are becoming as a society as a whole. I think that today there is a learning. We cannot forget what we are doing. We cannot turn our back to what we are doing. We have to think that today, we are within an ecosystem. Everybody has an important role. We have to look at these problems very deeply. In italy, we were the first ones to be stricken in such a violent manner by the pandemic. We provided very strong answers and i want to thank all of the italian citizens who had the whomnce of mind, without we would not have been able to overcome this crisis within the parliament that was open until the very end. It parliament that worked incessantly, attempting to make sure that all the parliamentarians came in safety, with social distancing. I believe we did something new. We worked with smartphones. We call our parliament the transatlantic ship. However, efficiently, and we make sure that we were all in safety. We continued with our legislative work. But the very important thought that i would like to express is that here in the society, we are all connected. We are all interconnected. That is what globalization means. We are all on the same planet. It means that all of us together have to work in a common manner, whatever crisis we are talking about together is the word. We have to come out together in a community. Country leaves the crisis as a community, and we have to do the same. We have to defend until the very end our democracies, our values and this is the community that we belong to. We might not always agree politically. This is not the problem. We should never be divisive on the fundamental values of our democracies. Solidarity, civil rights, human thets, the rule of law, ability to live in prosperity, respecting the others. This is something we should never abandon during this pandemic. We have a great opportunity to remind ourselves of this and the love this to the very end together. Thank you most kindly. Rep. Pelosi thank you mr. President , for your unifying statements. I would like to welcome the president of the french nationalist assembly. He made the oceans and essential focus of the last meeting. France is taking bold action to protect our planet, particularly our precious in vulnerable oceans and vulnerable oceans. The floor yours is now yours. [speaking foreign language] madame speaker, mr. President s. It is a pleasure for me to participate in this meeting of president s organized by Speaker Pelosi. I am delighted to see familiar faces, but to also be meeting new colleagues. I am very muchu, attached to this meeting, which is all the more important that now we have two face collectively an unprecedented situation. To face collectively an unprecedented situation. Though this meeting had to be remotely. The theme of this meeting is essential. The fight against lemon change. It is a choice i approve of the fight against Climate Change. It is a choice i approve of. Is other issues linked to it one of the main concerns and the pelosi wasspeaker kind enough to remind us earlier. I wanted this to be the topic of our meeting last year. That all of us share this concern over the environment. However, we really need to address the pressing issues. We need to make sure that the assemblies that we share mobilize and be able to implement all the means that they can. The emergency, the urgency in its scale, in terms of health, social, and economic issues, our world needs to mobilize collectively and we exemplaryve International Cooperation. Our needs will lead to what we do. Our countries will not be able to truly recover if our partners do not recover as well. In no country will be able to respect and no country will be able to respond to the Climate Crisis. We therefore need international mobilization. It is essential. Roundtableard to the and the working sessions we are going to take part in today. I am convinced that the exchanges with the experts and representatives of social personalitiesher will feed our discussions today and will enlighten our future commitments and future decisions. Uch, at the nationalist assembly a few weeks ago, i organized a day of discussions entitled dialogue to action. It was an intense moment of thinking that inspired the executives. Atesok forward to the deb that will begin soon. Will am convinced that we together be able to draw a working proposal and action proposal. Peaker. Ou, mrs. S you. Pelosi thank last year, you set a very High Standard for this discussion and i look forward to the participation in our discussions today. Hopefully to come close to your standards, if not to meet them. Welcome. Now i welcome the president of the European Parliament. The European Parliament has been a key partner in the Global Climate fight, declaring a Global Climate and environmental emergency, and urging all eu nations to reaching net zero admissions by 2050. We look forward to hearing from you. Floor is yours. [speaking foreign language] speakers, thank you kindly for this meeting and exchange of opinions and experiences. We have begun this very difficult season with an interesting reflection on certain goals that the eu wishes to achieve, but especially in march of this year widespread pandemic on our planet. As thehe european union, parliament, decided that we cannot suspend our democracy and many authoritarian examples in the world are not an example we wish to follow. They are not points of reference. We need to be very careful about this. Overcome with democracy, with transparency, with the participation of our citizens. Democracy is something we cannot suspend in spite of covid. Covid. Ever now, we need cooperation. Arlens have to cooperate, internationally, because democracy has not become out dated. In the last few months, we have seen this crisis has affected our society, financially, economically and socially. We have seen all of this because Climate Change, together with timeandemic at this very is tormenting our citizens. We started the European Legislature trying to understand our contemporary society and we found it in a study and reflection that involves all the european institutions. That is to say we have to save our planet. We gave ourselves a very ambitious goal. In 2050, we want to be a continent with zero emissions. We want to converge, we want to make sure all of our efforts converge toward this objective and the green deal proposal has helped us at this time of covid because we have understood that together, with their countries, our member states, we have to make sure all the energies converge. Converge ingies order to meet common goals. Ecological transformation has to go handinhand with sustainability, with economic sustainability, social sustainability, the struggle against inequality. Time, we at this should all reflect, we should all think together on what instruments should be used because these are instruments that have to help us in this fight. Not just, the gdp is sufficient. We need new indicators to understand this. These indicators must also tell us that growth cannot be infinite. It cannot go on forever. Growth can be measured based on certain parameters based on training, on education, on social sustainability, the struggle against inequality. I believe that this time of is great fearhere amongst our citizens, parlor parliamentstics, have to be open to debate and Cooperation Amongst themselves. That we have a number of values we have two safeguard and keep together. Of course, today will be a very rich day and we will hear interesting thoughts and opinions and we will all be enriched as a consequence. Thank you. Speaker pelosi thank you very much for your very important statement about the interaction of members of parliament and our connection to each other in this important challenge that we face. Its now an honor to introduce the speaker of the house of commons. Throughout his decades in parliament, he has been a clear leader in the uks proud history of addressing environmental injustice which has been part of the uks Sustainable Development metric since 1992. Under his speakership, u. K. Advanced its effort to reach zero by 2050 and ensure a greener, more sustainable future. Nice to see you. Friends, fellow speakers, first, i would like to thank you, Speaker Pelosi for holding this event and showing such great leadership on these issues. As it takes on the presidency of cop 26 next year. It is an honor for me to join you for my first ever g7 speakers meeting, ace as speaker as a house of commons. By way of introduction, i have myn a member of parliament whole term in lancashire, and the northwest of england. I have been elected since 1997. I was Deputy Speaker for nine years. It has been a long apprenticeship to take over the top job within the commons. Departure,it was a the previous incumbent. Elected on the fourth of november last year as 358 speaker of the house of commons and i have hit the ground running ever since. Up thedays of taking pulse after the general election and as the new year began, u. K. Formally left the european from marchof course, onwards like everyone else, we have been dealing with the challenges of the pandemic. I was middle of that, diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Isthe house of commons, this in bold, turning over the way of working. 700 years of doing it the same way. If nothing else, it certainly stirred the imagination of what parliament can look like in the future. Its a big thank you to the House Authority within the commons. They worked around the clock to find the alternative to us meeting so late, physically, virtually, we have done everything in westminster. Want none of the members or staff to be put at risk. For us to maintain social distancing. It is with great ingenuity our broadcasting unit andy Parliamentary Digital Service introduced hybrid proceedings which allowed most mps to join us by video link, meaning very few needed to be present in the chamber. Have around 35ly mps. Prime ministers questions, which everyone tunes into, is a different prime ministers questions because the numbers arent there. But what it did show as we can continue with the popular weekly occasion. Etimes thats rather than cameras panning around to members, we are beamed into peoples front rooms, studios, even dreams for virtual members. Remote voting which helped us through the height of the crisis theeing superseded by voting instead of the oldschool register. Like everyone else, we have all had to learn very quickly, whether it is zoom, webex, talking to each other via video link has now become the new norm. We cant beht that in the same room together to discuss the important issues like we are doing on Climate Crisis and the pandemic, which has affected all of us. Show that there is a will to do something for the good of all, we come together and with clear and good leadership, we can make things happen. That i without saying wish you, Speaker Pelosi, every success in hosting todays event and i thank you sincerely for to take on. What i would like to do is offer you all a warm welcome when we both play host to years conference in the u. K. And i hope you will all be able to be here presently in the u. K. While our program is under development, we aim to showcase the strength of the liberal democratic model that unites the g7 partners. Leading Global Response from this crisis. Hopefully, by then, a vaccine will be viable and this deadly virus will be stopped in its tracks. Hopefully, we will be enjoying the freedom we took for granted too easily. We have no right to destroy it, but protect it and leave a better world for future generations so children and grandchildren deserve better than what we have been doing so far. Hopefully together, through friendships, we can make the difference. Thank you, Speaker Pelosi. Thank you very much. We do hope we can actually be present with you in london next year. , whether a vaccine or whatever else, that we have conquered this, i welcome you to the first time to this meeting but look forward to your leadership year. Thank you for your important statement. Another new speaker to the conversation who was not with us last year is the speaker from canada. They have fought to make the connection between Climate Action and the economy central to discussions of combating the Climate Crisis. For years, canada has helped lead the global fight and most recently, and 2016 16, canada joined u. S. And mexico for the north american climate and clean energy partnership. Canada became the first country to adopt national methane in missions. This year, canada put forward an Energy Stimulus plan to combat the Climate Crisis while addressing the threat of covid19. Speaker, welcome and please begin. Thank you, Speaker Pelosi, and thank you for hosting this event in face of the challenges that have come up and the adversity. Im so glad you were able to put this together and you and your team have done a wonderful job, so thank you very much for hosting us today. Colleagues, this unique virtual gathering of g7 speakers is an excellent example of harnessing technology to overcome the obstacles we face both individually and collectively as our nations deal with covid19 pandemic. Together via videoconference in this effort and that of our predecessors to collaborate on common issues of global importance. The past months have wrought home to us, if we needed reminding, how vital International Cooperation is to the health of our planet and its people. [speaking french] are just thessions latest in our ongoing exchange of ideas and perspectives. Since 2002, when canada hosted the first ever meeting of g7 speakers, we have gathered to explore how we can combine our knowledge and experience to our collective benefit. While i regret we cannot meet in person, im pleased to be joining you for this virtual g7 family reunion. Conversation our will be as enjoyable as instructive. Thank you. Speaker pelosi thank you very much. I cant resist as an italian , the members here of aalian heritage, just on personal note now, we are blessed to be join by his holiness, the dalai lama to begin our first panel. , the imperative to solve the Climate Crisis. His holiness is a messenger of hope and spiritual guidance, e helping advance speed advance peace and spirituality to people around the world. A powerfuls has been voice for diametrical advocacy which he so beautifully elevated as a global priority when he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. Our g7 speakers will receive a copy of his holiness upcoming book which will be released in november. I know we will all be looking forward to reading it and learning from the insight and guidance from his holiness. Now please enjoy this special message from his holiness, the dalai lama. This is the generation, the present generation that calls on our , now, you seee the sense of common interest my country. Organization, i find very encouraging. 7 billion human beings, one human community. Think 7re, we have to billion human beings rather than my nation, my religious group, like that. I think if you look past history, there is too much emphasis on individual nation, individual religion, including color, it creates a lot of problem. , they are selfish, selfcentered attitude. Me, me, me. My nation, my group very narrowminded. The reality, whole world, 7 billion human beings. So now, the time comes, think humanity. 7 billion human beings. That, globalf warming also now becomes a very serious matter. So my friend, the Global Warming , and a few decades, it becomes more serious. Now, the people, the. 7 Speaker Pelosi thank you, your holiness, for introducing our first panel no time to lose, the imperative to solve the Climate Crisis. Im honored to introduce our first panelist, dr. Jane goodall, founder and researcher and environmental advocate. Its my religious you know dr. Goodall for over 40 years and to be in all of her courage and initiative. She began her career working with the legendary anthropologist dr. Lewis leakey, on whose Foundation Board i served and her work in tanzania with chimpanzees. Since 2002, dr. Goodall has served as a u. S. Messenger of peace where she has been a leading voice for responsible Environmental Stewardship and Sustainable Development. Her roots and shoots initiative has inspired counsel it countless young people to harness their power to advocate for a cleaner, healthier future. Dr. Goodall has been in advocate for protecting the planet from nuclear proliferation. Dr. Goodall, i now invite you to make your presentation. Thank you. Dr. Goodall i like to think of you as my good friend, nancy. We have known each other for a long time and i thank you very much for giving me a chance to g7 important gathering on Climate Change. As we all know, we are going through pretty dark times right ,ow on this poor old planet politically, socially, and economically. Right now, we are still battling this pandemic, covid19. The sad thing is, to a large extent, we have brought this on ourselves by our absolute disrespect of the Natural World and animals. Push destroy habitats, we animals into closer contact with people, we hunt them, kill them, and eat them. We traffic them, we sell them in horrific conditions in the wildlife markets of asia, the bushmeat markets of africa, and the internationally exotic pet cherry pet trade. In addition to that, we are breeding billions of animals in horrific conditions in our factory farms and all of these things have created ideal environments for a virus to jump into a person as happened with covid19. As we emerge from this pandemic, as we will, we are going to have to come together, really come together quickly, to confront a much, much more serious threat to our future, for the future of all life on earth. That is the Climate Crisis that everyone is gathered to discuss. The thing that is interesting, important, shocking is that the crisis has been brought about by that same disrespect of the Natural World, that plundering of the planets finite natural resources. It was Mahatma Gandhi who said the planet provides for human need, not human greed. Was on lockdown in the u. K. , where i am now, at my home, i was traveling the world 300 days a year. And i saw with my own eyes the melting of the ice, the rising the people dispossessed on their island homes because of high tides, they were uninhabitable. I saw the terrifying results of the hurricanes, the worst hurricanes, they get more frequent, the terrible flooding, and the droughts in Subsaharan Africa and parts of australia. Absolutely terrifying. And then last year, we had those awful, raging bushfires in australia, and now these devastating wildfires in the United States on the west coast. Change as a climate Global Community has never been more important than it is now. Of course, it is terribly important to control the emissions from fossil fuels, co2 , that is the main Greenhouse Gas and to move into sustainable energy. Short it is really important that we also become involved in something that is very important solution to mitigate, to slow down Climate Change, and that is to protect our forests, particularly our rain forests with all the rich biodiversity, to restore for it, and to plant trees. These trees that absorb Carbon Dioxide from the atmosphere and control rainfall and the climate, the temperature. That init is true, too, addition to planting trees, as we eat less meat, this will also make a difference. These factory farms with their billions of animals, its not just that they provide breeding grounds for diseases, but the effect on the environment is terrifying. ,he animals have to be fed forests have to be cleared to grow the grain, and fossil fuel is used to get the grain to the animals, they animals to the abattoir, the meat to the table. During digestion, these billions of animals are producing methane gas with is which is another very virulent Greenhouse Gas. So, i think as i travel around the world, or as i used to travel and now i am doing it virtually, there are so many people who are aware of the problems who are scared. They dont know what to do. They feel helpless. So one of the most important things we can do today is not only influence government leaders and business leaders, which are terribly important for theyto think about how consider mitigating Climate Change, but also for people to realize that they have a role to play. They can plant a tree, they can eat less or no meat, they can persuade their parents to use less fossil fuels, they can ride bicycles, they can walk. All of these things we can do and all of these things will from theo move away terrible situation in which we are now. My hope is in the young people. They are rising to this challenge. They are influencing their parents and grandparents. Many of them are in high positions, capable of making decisions that will make a major difference. The cumulative effect of millions or billions of people all doing their bit, all making ethical decisions and how they live each day, thinking about how the choices they make will influence future generations will help to slow down Climate Change. All of this is giving me hope along with the resilience of nature and the indomitable human spirit, the people who tackle it seems impossible and simply wont give up. So a very simple message, but i think it is important that people understand that if its something each and every one of us can do. Nancy, foru again, giving me this opportunity to get a little message. Give a little message. Thank you. Speaker pelosi thank you, dr. Goodall, for that simple, powerful, hopeful message. Its my honor to welcome our second panelist for this session, the former secretary of energy under site under president obama, secretary ernest ponies ernest bonys. To advanceocate partisanbased non policy and advance a clean energy future. His strategic leadership and knowledge were essential to restoring this conference of plan of action. His work with the Energy Futures commission, hes spearheading bold initiatives to protect workers rights and create good paying grain jobs while addressing the Climate Crisis. Secretary, the floor is yours. Thank you, Speaker Pelosi for organizing this important discussion. For giving me the opportunity to participate. His holiness, the dalai lama and dr. Goodall have clearly stated important elements of the case for urgency in addressing the Climate Crisis. I will outline briefly some of the elements we will need to put together clean energy solutions. In particular, to reach a very challenging net zero emissions mid century goal that is increasingly becoming recognized as essential, and frankly, to go beyond that, to admit negative emissions futures and the later part of the century. I will posit six elements i believe are essential for putting together a central effective Climate Action plans in our democratic societies. First is coalitions. We cannot affect accelerated, sustainable change around Massive Energy systems without doing the hard work of doing building broad political coalitions, labor, business, ngos, financial institutions, religious and military leaders, public and private sectors, national, state, provincial, city leaders. This will require pragmatism, not posturing. Effecty, we need to Regional Solutions with social justice. We can celebrate Energy Resources and challenges and varyl equity needs very by country and region and we could empower Regional Solutions. Third, all of the above we have to acknowledge there are no Silver Bullet solutions for net zero emissions. And every know to low carbon pathway enables others. We need Energy Efficiency across all economic sectors, advanced renewables such as offshore wind, electricity storage, not just at an hour time scale but from minute to seasons. We need advanced small, modular, and micronuclear technologies, oath fission and fusion. Need carbon capturing and sequestration at large scale. Wheat hydrogen, associated infrastructure, smart grids, ev fast charging, co2 pipes, hydrogen transport. Secure to build up supply chains including four Critical Minerals and metals. We need Carbon Dioxide removal of the atmosphere and upper oceans, using natural, technological, and hybrid solutions at large scale without which there cannot be a net negative future. All of the above will address electricity admissions emissions as well as those from harder 2d carbonized sectors like transportation and agriculture and will enable the Regional Solutions i referred to earlier. Jobs, jobs, jobs. We need to create millions of good jobs coming out of this covid crisis and going into the future. Over the last five precovid years in the United States, Energy Sector job creation out paced the economy more than two to one. Clean energy will leverage strong job creation and is very important for parliamentary promotion. Fifth, domestic and allied supply chains. Strategically incentivized supply chains means jobs and security, an important covid lesson, certainly in the United States. Publicprivate partnerships are central. They must be done intelligently. Policy support is very important, such as carbon border adjustments supporting clean manufacturing. Sixth and finally, innovation. To meet our goals, we are going to need innovation breakthroughs. Now of a decade starting supercharged innovation from research to demonstration, supplemented by employment incentives in order to be able to Scale Clean Energy dramatically after 2030. Doubling or tripling public Clean Energy Innovation investment in the United States, amounting to about 10 billion over the decade, will catalyze the synergistic development of technologies, business models, and jobs needed to reach our aggressive climate and social justice goals. All of the g7 countries were founding members, in paris, at cop 21 of mission innovation. We need now to follow through and double down. The private sector is poised to do its part, but we need our governments to step forward with a nearterm focus on the innovation agenda. This is the time to test us and our commitment to produce the toolkit that each country and region within our country will need to devise their regional net zero solutions. Thank you, madam speaker, and i look forward to our discussion. Speaker pelosi thank you very much. Discussion to what questions they may have, but i want to begin by asking dr. Goodall, you make these travels actually end virtually and bring your message of hope, what resonates with the communities to take Climate Action . Do you have any words of wisdom for us in that regard . Dr. Goodall can someone unmute me . Im still on mute. Speaker pelosi we can hear you. Dr. Goodall all right. My words of wisdom, just quickly summarize, im sorry wasker pelosi the question in your travels and the hopeful message you bring back about young people and its impact, on the other side of that coin, what message resonates that we should speak to those who resist Climate Action . , theredall first of all are individuals who said they simply did not believe in Climate Change, that it was a hoax and it was a chinese hoax. Change,re was a slight we admit it was Climate Change but its nothing to do with us. It would have happened anyway. When somebody is really thinking, really truly thinking that not just for political gain, its very hard to know how you can change their mind. Just believing, what they have been told, not what they really believe. So i tell them stories, i tell them about what i have seen. Of theabout the disaster climate refugees, people who have been driven from their homes by changing climate so they can no longer make a living there, the misery. I talked about the importance of protecting tourists and you cant do that until you alleviate the terrible poverty that in so many parts of the world and help people find ways of living that they dont have to destroy the forest to find new land to grow food for their growing families. Stories and tell people and try and find chink in the armor that i can weasel my way through. I have no better advice than that, im afraid. You, dr. Elosi thank goodall. Moniz, do you see any chink in the armor for those in fossil fuel who may be resistant to promoting and supporting policies for addressing the Climate Crisis . Dr. Moniz i do see hope. Im not pollyanna should. We know certainly there is resistance in many parts of the Energy Sector, which, after all, is a system that historically has always taken decades to change appreciably. On the other hand, if i just take the United States as an example. For example, the electricity industry, which in many ways is going to have to be the leader in getting to know to low carbon emissions, may be without us paying enough attention, what we are seeing is many utilities have actually already reduced their emissions by 40 to even 60 . They have to keep going down, but i think in my emphasis on rather than getting into namecalling, we are much that are embracing all of these players to come together and have effective carbon solutions. Frankly, if we dont, and if we dont address the social justice issues, including the Poverty Issues dr. Goodall just referred to, if we dont address the social equity issues, frankly, we are going to continue to have political headwinds in having our Energy Transition occur more rapidly. And we dont have time to waste, as everyone of us understands. This is why in talking about how we move forward, it may be a little bit different from what many say, but i would put at the top of the list coalitions. We have to enlarge the tent and get everyone to be part of the solution, including those who are currently major users or producers of fossil fuels. Lets hope that benefits of market being responsive to helping preserve the planet. Motivation mayt be something that takes them to the place that so far may have been an obstacle to public policy. I hope that you are right. I do want to ask both of you, as we convert to these good paying green jobs, and we know how important they are, what solutions do you have for those who are concerned about being left behind as we go forward to a green future . Know you have worked with many in the community on this subject and it is a concern to people that they may not be trained for the jobs of the future, but we cannot talk about that future without bringing them along, as you well know. If i may respond first, i would like to maybe advertise that in fact at m. I. T. , we have a project we call the roosevelt project. Itone asks which roosevelt, Teddy Roosevelt for the environment, Franklin Roosevelt for the new deal, and Eleanor Roosevelt for social justice. The premise here is exactly that we have to work from the worker up,community level, bottom if we want to effectively address Climate Change because everyone must see themselves as part of this future. In doing so, in studying the industrial transitions, what we find is in addition to what we do at the national level, what is done at to local level politically fill the social fabric is just as important as the various technology initiatives. We need local Actor Networks to Work Together. A great example in the United States is the transition away from steel in western pennsylvania. It was the knitting together of various elements of Civil Society that was so effective in transitioning that the economy and bringing along its workers. Bottomup, worker and community level, addressing social justice issues is absolutely essential, and that applies within our countries and it applies as we reach out, as dr. Goodall emphasizes, as we reach out to help the less developed countries come along to a low carbon future. Speaker pelosi dr. Goodall, did you want to Say Something about how we transition these folks into the new economy . Absolutell one of the key points here is education. In theschools not only developed countries, but everywhere, talk about the environment and talk about the need for a Better Future and how to get there. Give them a feeling of empowerment. Alleviatingabout poverty to protect forests, we involve all the local communities. We give them the tools like iphones that they can monitor the health of their forest. They know how to upload those onto platforms on the cloud. They are really proud of what they do and this is in seven african countries. Then there is our program for young people, which i mentioned earlier. Its now in over 60 countries. It young people from kindergarten, university, and beyond. The choose projects to make world better for people, animals, and the environment. They understand we are part of one human family, that this is more important than the color of your skin or your culture or your religion or your political convictions. Introducing is information about the environment, about how to move forward, about how to be part of, and it is absolutely amazing. I met a little boy of eight years old in tanzania, in the middle of nowhere, came up to me when i visited the school and said we have trees in our schoolyard and weve been finding out what sort of trees they are and how much carbon they might absorb. For a think we qualify grant . A little boy of eight in the middle of nowhere understood. Dr. Moniz may i just add as a footnote, that we focus on electricity, and that is very important, but also the issues of addressing things like is very important, very strongly coupled to the issue of attacking the forest, but also of liberating women. ,ll of these issues are very very connected and we need and powering women, we need addressing climate, we need addressing pandemics, we need to Work Together on all of these issues. That theyl the fact are all interrelated, we do empower women, we do microcredit taste on my hero, Mohammad Yunus is bank. School duringin and beyond puberty. We provide family planning, which but women now, cant afford to educate more than two or three children. They know that. They dont want more than two or three children. They want the information we give them. As you say, it is so important to empower women. One last comment on what you partnerships are really, really important. A long time ago, i decided to work with oil and Gas Companies if they were trying to do things better. Friends in the Environmental Movement were shocked and horrified, how could i sit down and talk to them . I said if you dont sit down and talk to people, you dont listen to them. How will you ever expect them to change . If you work with the Company Already trying to do things better and help them to do better and at the same time, they are supporting these programs to alleviate poverty and protect the Natural World, then it is a win win win situation. You are right about that. Amen. Oniz we had his holiness, the dalai lama, but i would also like to talk about the pope. Along the lines of what jane just said, it was quite remarkable that it was almost a year ago that the pope convened 10 ceos of oil and Gas Companies along with Senior Leaders from International Financial institutions, and altogether, we signed two documents, everyone supporting putting a price on carbon emissions, everyone supporting much Greater Transparency in terms of carbon reporting by all of these companies. That is what we need to keep building on. I know what dr. Goodall said about being criticized sometimes for being part of these discussions, but i just hope we can bring them along. That is how we will get to our goals faster. Dr. Goodall we need more people like pope francis. Hes another of my heroes. These indomitable spirits are out there everywhere and they are tackling things that seem impossible. On this panel are people tackling things that some people think are impossible, but we wont give up, right . Dr. Moniz absolutely. [laughter] Speaker Pelosi thank you for the remarkable discussion which will have a tremendous impact. Discussion over the connection of science and religion is a Perfect Place for us to conclude this part of the discussion. Thank you. Way, nancy, by the i included you as an indomitable spirit. [laughter] Speaker Pelosi our campaign 2020 coverage continues. Cspan. Your unfiltered view of politics. Today at 7 00 p. M.
