English bill clinton overlying about a matter. That man, who is an enemy, i compared him in my forward, hypocrisy and took out ads in the Washington Post offering money to those who thought there was some hypocrisy on the part of clintons congressional accusers. At the time, people accused larry flynt of being a bottom feeder. He has an answer to that. He resigned and did an interview with the New York Times and they asked him what they thought about me. Feeder,i was a bottom so they called me for a comment. Said thats right let meill let you know what i found there. [laughter] you did not print everything you had. You listen to the pleading of the wife. Mrs. Livingston called my you dont said realize how many people have been hurt in this. There are too many to count. She said now that bob has think it isyou necessary to print the details of what was going on in the various affairs. Took this lady of a lot of courage to call and ask. E i thought, he resigned from congress and is out. , and i all i wanted dont regret having done that. [applause] in the business of exposing peoples private lives. You are going after the hypocrisy question. Information that was just salacious, you would not use it. That is true. Face on whaterent we were looking for. Member of Congress Come senator, any politician, if he contrary tolife , it he advocates in public think he is a hypocrite and has to be exposed. Mayor inare if it is a a small city or town. Hes going to church every sunday. He can think that represent you in goodwill, somebody that is that phony about their job. Manipulate their own lives and attempt to manipulate your life. [applause] scotta panel yesterday ritter shocked the audience by but i he was republican, always wondered about your own politics. You are a ruthless capitalist, right . [laughter] a man of the market who will do anything for a buck. You are the american dream. I am so democratic that it is not even funny. How did you get that way, larry . When i was born in eastern kentucky, there were no republicans in the whole state. Now all that has changed. Lately i begin to wonder if republicans and procreate. [laughter] have decided that as thatspirited as they are even they can come up but it bothers me how republicans can damn mean. The people who are buying into that really need to give it some thought. [applause] becauseis interesting usually the bleeding heart liberals and the realistic conservatives who cloak themselves sometimes as abertarians, when you are believer in the freedom of the market, the right of the consumer, you dont want government telling people how to live. Days there would have been a place in the Republican Party for someone who didnt want government in their personal life. There are some republicans who are that way, but remember they have their own private. Itmus test i have talked to several congressmen and senators on my i waso tell me prochoice, but if they told me i was going to run as a that ican on this ticket would have to be prolife. Committee would not give me any money at all otherwise. When you see people sitting in a , usuallyn the senate most of the republicans are prolife. But leave, that is not an , but they also have to adapt other philosophies that are in line with the basic republican platform. Get elected you may be the most wellbeing person in the world, but by the time you get to washington you are literally in a straitjacket. What can you do for your country . You can do nothing. Fools outats may make of themselves every once in a while, but they are a bunch of renegades. The republicans dont get anything done other than special interest. Speaking of special interest falwell and what remains of the christian coalition, i gather you are not a supporter of their efforts. [laughter] falwell, Jimmy Swaggart , they preached against me for 15 years on the radio. Hour,s oldtime gospel come i took one Jerry Falwell to court and fought him for four years and one in the United States supreme. Ourt in 1988 that means you can say things and do things about people as long as it is done in fun and my cant say you hurt feelings, my mothers feelings, my dogs feelings and im going to sue you for it. I think the greatest wassfaction i got swaggarts ministry was at an alltime high and when they caught him with that hooker in that motel room in baton rouge, tennessee, they found a copy of hustler. [laughter] [applause] know, thatt, you wishes so gratifying. [laughter] do you think he was about to come around . It seem like he was working on it. [laughter] let me ask you about your own view of religion. In the people versus larry flynt, there is an interesting scene that you may not want to thesit, but you came under spell of all people, jimmy and his sister was an evangelical minister, and you came under her spell. She used to wear seethrough blouses and things, so it is easy to come under her spell, but you seem to be a religious convert. Call ad have which you incalled spiritual awakening 1977, but you know what . I got over all that. [laughter] if all those born again christians would just take a little lift him every day they would be just fine. [laughter] your religion now . Every significant war since the beginning of time has all been fought over religion, every so, fought over religion, when so many people have been killed in the name of their god, something is wrong. We have to seriously question that. Today cannot be a more dangerous time to reflect on what is going in various religions, not just the muslim religion, but the christian fundamentalists to o. The only difference between the muslims and the fundamentalists is that the fundamentalists are. Ore moderate they say how much they love the jews, but they are just saying it. You have to beat out went to other peoples religions, other peoples faiths, and the fundamentalists will live through their teeth and go through their church and preach something totally different. I have a big problem with the because there is just simply too many people dying in the name of religion. The bushdont think administration or Clinton Administration gave enough consideration to the religions of the world in establishing their foreign policy. Country and into a theto virtually demolish culture they have known for centuries and get rid of their repercussions. T all of thoselieve , they willed in 9 11 deserve the justice everybody gets who was involved, but those people got on their planes and they were willing to die for their god, their religion, and they did that because they were that upset with the United States. If they were bad upset with United States, what did the United States do . William [applause] was it because we stole their oil . Because we totally disregarded them of subhuman beings . Human beings all over the world have emotions, feelings, desire, and you have to recognize this , and i dontple think i governments in the past have. If we are going to have world peace, we are going to have to promote it in that sort of fashion. [applause] let me, im not getting any cues about questions, so hopefully someone will. I assume we are going to have questions. Let me know. That me ask you about religion and sex. I gather you dont think it has been totally beneficial connection. And religion, do you think the church has been an inspiration . I always said that the very , peopleg that people said it is obscene. I said, complain to them. Moto car, you will complain to the company. Other than sex itself, other than the desire for survival, that is to live, the desire to ,ive, the desire for survival the strongest single desire we have is that of sex. I think the old boy upstairs a way to seeve us the world was entertained. It is interesting. One of the contradictions we have seen an american foreignpolicy, the fall of the berlin wall, the end of communism, the spread of freedom was manifested in one startling way, suddenly people got to buy and read hustler along with playboy, penthouse, and others. You sell well in eastern europe, dont you . Extremely well. There are 23 countries in europe. Also in israel, which is a big market for us too. Wankers. Thats a headline. [laughter] are there questions . Question, maybe. I have not read the book yet, brief you had any anecdotes that no one knows about in regards to your brief association with Russell Means to do maybe it is in the book and since i have not read it i dont know it, but basically his activism in correlation with yours. About question was Russell Means and his activism and its correlation with yours. I know russell. I know he has tried to do everything he can around the country. He is a great guy. And it isoccasionally too bad that they tried to pacify them with this, with these gaming casinos on their reservations, but that is not solving all the other problems. What about gambling . You have been a big advocate in this respect. Int you believe that it poverty as people, its a trap. Dropped 500 son in the casino and it was very annoying to me when i witnessed it. [laughter] thingsybody does certain to excess. Drinking, gambling, or what else, but i have found that most , they dontamble gamble more than what they can afford to. I dont think a businessman or anybody else, whether you have to be subjugated to the fact that you have to worry about somebody who cannot control their excesses, that they gamble away the farm. I dont think you have many of them. Yes . Do you think dick cheney is clinically insane . [laughter] what did he say . The question was, do think dick cheney is clinically insane. Wants to know if the Vice President of the United States is clinically insane. Dickam just saying that cheney is mean and greedy, the same as rumsfeld. He ought to be in chains. Some people say it is kind of good to have your secretary of defense be a little crazy, well they dont think they were bargaining for him. Is havingst think he fun right now and it will dawn on him some day and he would think he has a really bad hangover. [laughter] he is in a cage having fun, and what was the point after that . Hes going to wake up and realize he has a bad hangover. That he has out been touring with going back to the bottle, so that will be interesting if it happened, but i dont know that is the truth. [laughter] we have to read the next issue. I know a guy that jobs with him, so we have to wait and see if it is true. Do think samesex marriages would b should be legalized and would legalizing samesex marriages lead to polygamy . As far as samesex marriage, i dont care if people marry a tree. [laughter] change my lifestyle in the least. Just leave those boys alone unless they are bothering you. And as far as the polygamy goes, who foundedn brown the Mormon Church said he found this 10 commandments in the backyard and the sheriff of illinois sent him on his way to and and they got up there formed this Thriving Community and anybody can have as many wives as they wanted. Wives andung had 45 he rode around in the evening to visit each one of their homes and had a great little thing going. All of a sudden they wanted to join the union and the president said, sorry, polygamy is against the law and if you want to join you have to knock it off. They said they would knock it off, but the problem is they and thed not get off funny thing about this is that it really is still going on and the only people up there who get prosecuted is the people who are challenging the law or speaking out about it. The one that just wanted to continue their lifestyle, they have no problem with it at all. There you have it. Larry flynt confirming the importance of the Mormon Church in america for the cspan audience. Thoughts aboutr the impeachment of the current president and are you doing anything along those lines . [applause] what are yourn is current thoughts about the impeachment of the president and are you doing anything to hasten that or along those lines . I am a realist. All three bodies of the government are controlled by the republicans. That could change in 2006. They have the house, the soate, and the white house, there is nobody to impeach them. And lesters going to be enough republicans to vote the democrats down. If the democrats take back the in this coming election, i think there will be articles of to followt in congress, and i think it should be done, because faith that way with you can say bill clinton did the damage to this country that george bush has. [applause] thank you. Yes, i just want to say as an exwife who rarely survived a republican marriage, i want to thank you very much for pointing out there truly profound hypocrisy. It is quite amazing, and also for being true to who you are. Wasink if every man if he true to who he is, it would work. Everyonereally help if were true and honest, so i appreciate that. , i amestion i have wondering about how you do your research or get information, what the processes like or how much you can tell us about that. Bipartisan and those democrats who betrayed trust and faith in relationships, i think we can claim it is a bipartisan illness. Not really. There is an edge the republicans have. Is a structural difference between republican marriages and democratic marriages. My book, playing president , there is a marvelous scene where i am traveling around with ronald reagan, who did have two wives and was a player in his youth. These two women come to a meeting, but they were drunken late, wonderful southern republicans and i ask them why they liked reagan and they said he is a wonderful guy. I asked them do think extramarital sex would be the best way to prevent aids . They said that is crazy. What does he know . I said he also has his position. They said what does that have to do with being president . Refusal to discuss aids and Sexual Practices did cost a lot of lives around the world, so i will take your point is well taken. Aids someone who does prevention and as a next wife, any man whos going to have a relationship outside of marriage, whether a congressman or dogcatcher, please use a m, especially if youre not going to recognize it. I forgot the question here. [laughter] how does he do his research . This is a good question because i want to expand it a little bit. , imer we like it or not not a interview of hustlers view of erotica or hugh hefners view of erotica. We have debated this over the years. Hustler now is an explicitly political magazine. Probably one of the most political magazines in the country. You dostion was how do your research, but this is cost you readers . Get rid ofe to anybody who does something strong or tough, like the l. A. Times, how do you survive as a business doing what the l. A. Times should be doing, but doesnt . First of all, we have a niche audience. People know what to expect in hustler. Entertainment, a humor, and political magazine. We do a lot of dark humor. The closest thing on it would be some of the better episodes on saturday night live. It is obviously a lot of fine. As far as we get our research and where we get it from, we report on a lot of politicians, but i dont believe this. Information comes from people in the mainstream media. They will call me up and they will be so mad that they will be paper orcause their network wont let them go with this story, so they turned it over to us. [laughter] they wind up getting it out in the long run and if they break it, they wind up so getting the coverage. [applause] alongs question follows from the one we just finished. Myself an educated and well read and relatively wellinformed person, but a year or so ago i was concerned with the question as to how an individual in Todays Society can be wellinformed. You gentlemen are both in the media and i wonder if you have any immediate ideas given the fact that corporations and entities and government influence what we read and hear . N our media how is the average person going to take practical steps to remain wellinformed . [applause] i do want to give a little plug for something called truth dig. Com. The great thing is we can post , buzz flash, huffington post, a lot of good sites out there that allow people to inform themselves, so i think all is not so gloomy, but the question was addressed to you. Call them regular people, but how do you get their interest in how did they get informed . What, the best political show on television is hardball. To be kidding. You really think that . Jon stewart is. [applause] come on. I like jon stewart. R too, but if martin t you want to get the facts of the day and one in to be reliable, i good one. Hews is a if you disagree, that is your prerogative, but aside from that i used to read time and newsweek all the time. I dont anymore. I used to read them cover to cover. Just dont, because they dont tell it like it is. You find that is happening in a lot of newsrooms around the. Ountry they want the status quo. They dont want to rock the boat. Those guys, their days are gone. Nd most of them are gone there are some good websites like bob mentioned and you should pick your tv shows based on what your interest is and should not waste a lot of time reading them. The nation is a good magazine. [applause] they happen to be honoring bob, when is that . Month. Thank you, larry. June 7, fairmont hotel. Great. Thank you. Yes. Hi. You are doing a good job. My question is indirectly political. What do you make of the trend that appears to be an pornography of pornographic images of women become younger and younger. There seems to be a trend of net. Lifehat is your personal like . What do you do in your personal time for recreation and enjoyment . If you want to answer one or both, i appreciate it. I was in his office yesterday. He has this great Helmut Newton book, lifesize pictures. If i had that, i could be on the Desert Island all by myself, but the question was about the trend in erotic literature or younger andto ever has it crossed a line and get into child pornography . I want to add to that question, you used to be against plastic. You said you wanted to show women that you could actually see in real life as opposed to playboy, which showed women you could never see and were not created by god. I wonder if you still hold to that standard. Know is that i publish material by adults for ,onsenting adults, not children but we cant limit reading a adults reading habits. People need to be better parents. Pornan easily put your away. Dont put a computer in your kids rooms are included in the family room so you can monitor what they are doing. If youre still worried about the computer, throw it in the junk. No one made you buy it. Instead use and lobbyists to congress to try to lobby to make everything safe for your children when all you are really doing is you know being a lazy parent. [applause] but with all due respect, the question goes further than that, which is what is our erotic image . Is there a tendency, not a tendency, mad rush, to depict women in playboy, penthouse, hustler as ever young ever perfect by some Plastic Surgeons standard, and abnormal standard as the Plastic Surgeon said two huge tits on a stick i think the way it is put and is hustler part of the process of creating a false image . We are part of that process, and we have a magazine called very legal that we have published for 15 years. All the girls are adult, and they are between the ages of 1821. You know they are very tame compared to us in some of the other magazines. Centuries infor their they always had young girls and concubines to take care of them when they were old men. They felt that rejuvenated them, mean, i not i am starting something that wasnt started centuries ago. What im doing is Everybody Loves a youthful attractive young girl. But the problem is you are not going to confuse someone that is an adult with someone that is a child. You know. And i mean dont buy into that argument. You know when someone is not legally old enough to model. Limit, au do accept a government imposed limit, on what should be shown in relation to age, dont you . You would you are a for keeping it making it illegal to employ nonconsenting children . You dont believe in child porn. You think it should be illegal. Yes. I think it should be illegal. But, see, what they should do is they should be she government should be prosecuting the people that violate those children violating the rights of someone that is not old enough to speak for themselves. You know. The civil right legislation there is to make this possible. But you know the government just wants big bus and put all these guys in jail. They are sickos. They are never going to get any better, and without getting any more closer to solving the problem. But it is really easy for anybody Law Enforcement or anyone of you people in this audience, it is very easy for you to tell if a child is being used in pornography. I mean, i know it when i see it. Question . Hello larry and robert. Im going to talk about the meatgrinder page, that pictorial cover, and would you say if ta reflected the mores that people were thinking or black humor, and would you print Something Like that today . Good question. Ry it comes up all the time in my class. The most controversial cover that you ever printed in hustler was the whole idea that women a meatd there was grinder, whats the story behind that and would you do it today everybody cap saying that women were like a piece of meat. I had a meatgrinder that showed women being fed through it, and it was just satire. You know it was just this a spoof, but nobody got it, and since then i admitted i was wrong. [laughter] thank you, larry. I was outraged when the Los Angeles Times abruptly dropped Robert Scheer from its oped pages. [applause] i wrote a letter the idiot publisher of that newspaper. Handwritten no less, stating what i had done, and canceling insubscription and closing a photocopy of the subscription with canceled written across it. It. Stating why i had done fundamentally now, no amount of dullness can extinguish the tiniest amount of light. My question therefore is when will the Los Angeles Times see the light once again and get Robert Scheer back on its oped pages . [applause] the Second Coming i think. [laughter] me, that is not the purpose of this discussion, but let me just say that we are not end and on any one source. You know you dont want the read paper, dont read the paper. There other good people writing, around, and example of the internet i think is very. Ncouraging fo instance, i discovered could buy maury ivens in truth dig for 15 bucks a pop. It is incredible bargain we put on our page, and 25,000 people come and read it. You know, so we are not dependent upon the Tribune Corporation anymore. The Tribune Corporation they have their own troubles, on television stations in this market, own a television and a print out right in hartford, bought up the times mirror. The congress was supposed to give them the law lobbyists asked for which is to allow them to do this concerning didnt do that ok. So we dont have to get waivers from fcc unless politically appointed people give waivers they have to sell. They are a business you can not trust them. You can not count on them. Fortunately we have alternative media readily available people should use it. [applause] i appreciate your question i really do. One thing that disappoints me i have only one point anger about incident which may not be understood by people watching on cspan i was let go after after 30 years of association. You ask anybody around the l. A. Why was i let go. They cannot give you an answer. Have the most Important Institution in american life, media, goes unexamined with the people who have the most experience with it. That is the tragedy in this story. [applause] to take one we have last question and wrap it up. Youreaking of where to get news come i like Robert Scheers program on public radio every friday at 2 30 p. M. For some strange reason there was a mixup that occurred and 28 , only three planes attacked the carrier and he made a perfect dive and landed his 1000 pound bomb and one of the most vulnerable spots on the carrier.
