Im burnt off its good to have you with us the brother of george floyd is appealing to protesters tonight to remain peaceful saying that his brother always supported peace and unity terrence floor was speaking in minneapolis at the spot where his brother died a week ago today when a white Police Officer derrick. Held his knee on george fords neck for nearly 9 minutes the footage captured on his cell phone shocked the world sparking a week of protests of Police Racism and brutality throughout the u. S. And beyond some of those protests turned violent resulting in several deaths across the country nighttime curfew have been imposed but broken in dozens of u. S. Cities. Or i want to bring in. Now he is in minneapolis for us. Good afternoon to you stefan you are there at this whats become a memorial site now tell me whats going on right now you know this is the day to be here and they had this site here right behind me this is the intersection and right there across the intersection that was actually the place exact place where george floyd was arrested and we all know what transpired then you alluded to this is rather Terence Floyd was here and talked to the crowd here sizable crowds. And encouraged everybody to really also communicate to others in the protester crowd not just to those people but everybody who has influence or a voice in their communities to really bring forward one point then needs to be justice yes and protesting demonstrating for this fighting for this is absolutely ok but please peaceful without ransacking buildings without putting buildings on fire and looting them and scaring. Also private citizens in their homes that was a really really powerful moment and this is a very powerful moment too because this is almost a protester happy hour or so people from all walks of life. In the cities and races young old its quite a sight very positive and you have to wonder what weve seen in the past 6 days. Will the families call for protests to be peaceful will these calls make a difference. Well thats the key question randi absolutely right and everybodys asking. That question and would love to have the answer ready and i dont have it ready its its only to be hoped that this also really rings a bell with the crowd which will change the late of the day goes you know at a local time as you know 8 oclock local time on the dogs and theres a curfew in place in minneapolis like in many other cities in the United States also and what that means is that also the demographic the makeup of the people who are protesting will change and we just can hope that even this crowd which is more prone to be maybe more violence is respecting the wishes of the white family for peace we will definitely see this night begins to fall here in the midwest on the story for us in minneapolis in the state of minnesota stefan thank you. For you as President Donald Trump has lashed out at state governors for not cracking down harder on the protesters in a Conference Call the day he referred to several governors as being weak and he called on them to rest in jail more people heres a closer look now at the outrage that has been fueling some of the worst unrest that the u. S. Has seen in half a century. Of washington. In washington flames flick a talk in the darkness just a stones throw away from the white house. Coniston slew of Police Patrol cars and in boston. In some places unrest gave way to violence and looting like here in san diego. There were countless arrests here in phoenix arizona. And the tense standoff in seattle echoing scenes in dozens of cities from coast to coast. The Clothing Store torched in Long Beach California the United States has been set the blaze by the killing of george floyd. He died in Police Custody one week ago and. He remarried a black man pinned to the ground under the knee of a white Police Officer Derrick Sjodin he was charged with lloyds murder on friday. In miami protest has demanded justice for george floyd say his name they chant. That shot you. I cant i cant discipline you without his you but this is. The america supporting our children all across the country many Police Officers also felt compelled to show their solidarity and that anger for the cops in the United States and when you see that you cant justify that and when i look at that all the good that we do in a community Police Officers across the nation can be your destroyed in one act like that President Trump has reacted by blaming lefty script on sci fi for the violence hes also a state governments to get tough on protesters but after a week of deepening unrest that has brought fire to the gates of the white house many a calling for the president to stop stoking the flames. For more and tonight im joined by karen thats here shes a global Opinions Editor for the Washington Post she joins me tonight from dallas texas karen is going to have you on the program to years ago you wrote an opinion piece in the Washington Post and they have the headline i no longer have hope in White America what with the headline be tonight. Interesting question and i get asked this question a lot actually about hope and i think my responses somewhat similar to what i wrote back then which is taken from their ostend sharing and its this notion that i dont work or operate or write out of hokie right out of the shadow. It could be that in my lifetime i dont see these issues go away. Just like you know black slaves probably thought their children and their grandchildren would be slaves. So i would operate in this shadow of hope that i knew worked anyway. I dont think hope is quite the right question i think that is a question more so for White America. For the reason that we should help the things will get better and. Let me ask you about something were seeing right now were seeing Police Officers across the u. S. Male taking a knee to show solidarity with protesters what do you say to that. You know i wish all that solidarity about seeking uni happened and 2016 and Colin Kaepernick the n. F. L. Player took any during the National Anthem to protest all these issues that were seeing now and many around the country black students way allies also made the same action and what happened they were blackballed kicked out of school jobs threatened in the catholic is effectively. You know prevented from playing in the n. F. L. And right now personally for me when i see those images of Police Kneeling it doesnt move me not much to be honest with you but i would. Like to see police surrendering some of these militarized weapons what id like to see is police saying we hear you are standing down. Lets organize a way that we can have a dialogue in a room i would like to see the police not arresting my colleagues in the journalism community. There are people who are posting blaine james and so you know i dont feel much of anything when i see these gestures right now a few days ago you wrote a piece on how western media would cover minneapolis if it happened in another country and in that piece you imagine an 18 year old white beery and Student Activist saying this about america lives dont matter especially not black lives its like the americans are living in a failing state. Karen are you living in a failing state now. Well i think as as a black american as the daughter of immigrants if you look at what a state is supposed to do a state is supposed to protect you the state is supposed to deliver you Adequate Health care. A state is supposed to protect your rights and i think right now. If those rights if those protections are afforded to these people of color and means that the state has failed honestly and so i think whats happening now with the pandemic with. The Police Brutality were seeing how much value we put on lives and so for all of this to be happening at the same time as were seeing more than a 100000. 00 people dead we are the epicenter of the current of errors in diameter and we havent even had it gave. You hadnt even had you know any sort of and knowledge many of how how disastrous something is happening what is going on so. It feels bleak i wish i had a better word to you it kills week. So well just have to see with the summer and the summer brings estimate for we run out of time you and i spoke a couple of times after the murder of saul the journalist your market showed you back in 20 teen you were his editor at the Washington Post and we spoke about this lack of accountability about being able to kill with impunity because shogi and george florey they were from completely different worlds but would you say that their worlds connected in their deaths. That is profound. This phrase i can bury. Eric garner when he was choked out by police in new york and ridgway and then general with those reportedly being one of his last words i need the connection that i see its all about is a complete disregard for human life and the ability of state forces of police of people who have been given the power. To be able to snuff out lives like that and not receive accountability and so. I do see that in the i think i think. He cared very much about the dignity of his people just as you know what so many of us i do care about the dignity. Lack of all people and so thats what all of this is about its about our democracy its about a fight against the ability to take away lives whenever they seem inconvenient to us so that its connected karen a to you the global opinions are there for the Washington Post joining us tonight from dallas texas care of as always we appreciate your time in your insides thank you thank you bernd are some sports news football news now in spain clubs are training ahead of the restart to the nations football season which is set for june the love ryall madrid one of a number of clubs back in action following the announcement they play their 1st match at home to valencia on june 18th a week after the 1st leg of for more than 3 months as in germany spanish games will take place behind closed door. And here is a reminder of the top story we are following for you the family of george floor does call in for peace as the u. S. Continues to grapple with the unrest sparked by his death in Police Custody one week ago today speaking at a memorial for his brother terrence floor condemned instances of arson and looting and urged for jesters to channel their outrage into peaceful political action.
