There is something way more sinister lurking behind electrical grids. A new report is warning that the very source of our globes power could create a National Disaster on a massive scale. The report says our entire air, rail system, it could all go down. Satellite communications, maybe even death and destruction could follow all from a massive solar flare on the sun. A u. K. Cabinet agency says in its space weather preparedness strategy report that humanity would have just 12 hours warning before a socalled coe row that mass ejection disrupts electrical power generation, telecommunication, avionics and, as we said, satellite systems. The Natural Disaster would not mirror those of hurricanes or tornadoes in terms of destruction, but an extreme solar storm could leave 130 Million People without power not for months, but for years and could also produce a catastrophic loss of life depending on how long the nations electrical system is down. So what do we do when weve got big utilities here in the United States . Are they ready, are they prepared . Were less that an hour to the closing bell. Lets start the countdown. Liz i know it sounds like were overstating this, but there is a very legitimate report out that involves the potential for earth to be for the first time in a long time in a very unique position to get smacked by a solar flare. If you dont know, a solar flare is when the sun shoots out blasts of radiation xrays across the solar system. The report says these explosions could cause power loss, aviation disruption, communication loss and disturbance to or loss of satellite systems. Our reasonable worst Case Scenario this is a quote would only allow us 12 hours from observation of this flare to impact. Are we ready for this, folks . How are Utility Companies on a very hot day in america right now reacting to the warning . American electric power, aep, has the biggest Electricity Network in the nation with more than 40,000 miles of transmission lines. Weve got the chairman and ceo, nick akin, whos joining me now in a fox business exclusive interview. Nick, good to see you, thank you so much for joining us. We were going to have you anyway great to ceo, liz. Liz the electrical grid is a big story, but then this report came out today. How familiar are your people with the potential for what solar flares could do, and are you guys ready . Liz, were very familiar with that. Weve been working on that for years. Certainly, the resiliency of the grid when you think about prevention, detection and resiliency, weve obviously made changes to our grid. As a result, we have additional monitoring equipment, we also have our equipment when its specced out to be placed into service. Its enhanced from various operating practices so it can withstand those kinds of solar flare activities. Any kind of geomagnetic disturbance, were able to resolve that. Also when you think about the resiliency of the grid, theres a lot of activities associated with what happens afterwards as well liz yeah. And thats a function of partnerships with the government as well. Liz you think the government should be way more on top of this than it is . I mean, this report came out from the u. K. Government. We have very smart people at noaa and nasa who have been watching this too, but this particular report out today really caught our eye, nick, because i looked at it and thought, whats different . It appears the way the sun and the earth are positioned and the 11 to 12year cycle of these solar flares puts us in a perfect storm, so to speak, that would really cause potential havoc here. Theres no doubt if you have a cataclysmic event, we have to be able to look at the resill genesee activities resiliency activities associated with that. The u. S. Government and electric Utility Industry has been working together for a couple of years now on massive types of activities with our grid x2, grid x3, there have been drills associated with that to really focus on the overall effort of the government and the Utility Industry in response to those types of events. But i can tell you that a lots being done already in terms of resiliency and prevention of that kind of activity, because we understand how important the electric quid is to grid is to everything we do in our daily lives. Liz would it be the kind of thing, nick, if this happened in the u. S. And a lot of the grid were knocked down, you would turn to your competitors, say lets all band together and fix this situation . You get a billionton plasma cloud in what is known as this coronal mass ejection, and its almost like armageddon, the movie, you know . We have to work on it together. Oh, youre right, liz. We would reach out, obviously, theres already a process in place. The utilities have been working together for decades in terms of mutual response to any kind of, any kind of catastrophic event. So that process is already in place, and its been enhanced with the government in terms of the activities that they can do in support of rehabilitation of the grid. So those are extremely important areas whether its cybersecurity, geomagnetic disturbance, whether its physical security, those are the kinds of things we Work Together all the time on. Liz nick, i want you to stay with me because i have somebody youd be very interested in hearing from. We just landed tom berger, the director of noaas space weather prediction center. You see this report, is it an overstatement . Is it overdramatizing . Thank you for having me, liz. First of all, i havent seen the report in detail. It was just released yesterday. Do have it, i am reviewing it. I dont believe its overdramatizing the potential effected of a large event. However, we should emphasize that we are aware of this. Our government is also studying this problem in detail, and we do think were prepared to both forecast and alert any such event should it occur. Liz okay. But right off the bat i need to ask because as were looking at all of this, what should companies, the government and individuals do to prepare . That thing on your screen looks scary but, again, its the unique positioning of the earth this time around that could make things worse. Its really, the sun goes through these 11year cycles, and its in near the pk of one of its 11year cycles, so youre seeing a view of the xray sun, if you will, and its active, but its not much more active than any other past cycle, in fact, its a lit 8 less little less active than in past cycles. Were not really too concerned about an event like this. Again, we are vigilant at noaa and nasa, 247 vigilance on the sun liz of course. And here at the space weather prediction center, its our job to make sure were not taken by surprise should the sun create one of these large events. Liz nick, as you look at all of the things you worry about as the head of aep, which is a bigger threat, the Environmental Protection agencys regulations or a solar flare . Because more regulations are supposed to come down in a week or two. [laughter] i dont mean to choke, but were wondering and figures out what happens with the co2 emissions and how much longer you guys will be given to fix that situation. Of course, the Supreme Court had weighed this on this very, very dramatically. Yeah, liz, in some way youre asking a great question, because everything that we do whether its epa relateed, whether its market related or any other issues, weve retired 25 of the coal fleet in this country. And when you do things like that, you really have to think about the resiliency of the grid in response. And you have to take your time doing it, because margin is being taken out of the system whenever youre taking out components or changing out components. And so we want to be very careful, and i think thats what were looking at, the clean power plan, when the president comes out with that. Can we really deal with the timing, the timetables, the effectiveness of all the reductions that would occur in terms of retirements and make sure thats manageable so that we can maintain that margin to answer any kinds of these types of events whether cyber, physical or geomagnetic. Liz you have a lot to think about. We appreciate you taking time out in your day. Nick ache kins, aep has a near 4 dividend payout, so if youre looking at a tenyear in aep, you get a lot more. Tom berger, director of noaas space weather prediction center. Good to see you, sir, thank you for being with us. Thank you, liz. Liz were at session highs right now. Thats interesting. Just off session highs for the Dow Jones Industrials, but were seeing a little bit more green on the screen. Again, we got some pretty decent data, except the gdp number while missing looked a lot better when we saw the revised picture. Closing bell, were just about 50 minutes away. Donald trump takes an even more commanding lead in the latest gop polls, leaving all the other republican candidates behind. But he does not fare the same against democrats. Whats going on . Whos beating him . Whos he beating . Were going to game this out in just moments. And the little bluebird getting its wings clipped after interim Ceo Jack Dorsey addressed investors, but now the dust has settled, stock is slightly higher. Is a buyout in the cards . Charlie gasparino was one of the fist to anticipate first to anticipate Something Like this. Hes got more and new stuff coming up next. Weve got a stock thats getting hammered today, and its whole foods, hitting a record 52week low at one point today. The company, heres what happened, reported disappointing earnings per share, disappointing revenue and outlook yesterday. So all three down after the bell. As a result, several firms including Morgan Stanley and webbush all made target cuts on whole foods, down 12 . Now, on an analyst call yesterday, whats the problem . Ceo walter rob partially blamed the companys weak sales on the pr disaster that followed the nyc, new York City Department of Consumer Affairs audit. What did that find . It found that new yorkers were getting charged a lot more, that the stores in new york were mislabeling the weights of freshly packaged foods. I shop at that whole foods, by the way. Liz well, we all do. Ive been ripped off. Im a victim. [laughter] liz you look like one. Im a victim. How did you just say stern agee . Are you threatened the the by te french . I hate the french, but, you know liz down 12 , you can see, with whole foods. Now lets switch over, soul cycle Just Announced soul cycle. [laughter] liz will file to go public. Yes, an ipo for the boutique fitness studio. It also announced its naming a new ceo, the current chief operating officer, julie whalen. The outgoing ceo will remain involved in the company, but she doesnt get to run it. Im a fly wheel girl. Youre a fly girl . Liz that too. Take a look at twitter. As we mentioned during this weeks earnings call, the stock was doing nothing but going down. Its up just a third of a percent right now after hitting a 52week low in the wake of its Earnings Report where it basically just showed they have very slow future growth. How long does twitter have to go before someone snaps it up . Charlie gasparino. I just want to make this one observation that jack dorsey, we should show a picture of him, i think hes the best looking c suite executive. Liz the bearded wonder. Hes a good looking dude. Liz that is an old picture. He is a good looking dude. The only person, i think, from the c suite thats better looking than him is the president at ci, this nabon. Shes beautiful. Will. Liz shes beautiful. A lot of fine looking people. Hes cofounder, very smart. Look how good looking he is, right . Liz thats the beard, and now its a lot longer. But this guy is one of original founders of twitter. Hes extremely smart. He also came up with square. The guys great. Listen, heres the bottom line, twitter is not going to be an independent company forever. Everybody on the street knows it. They basically conceded internally and during analyst calls, they dont come out right and say it, but they wink and nod. This things going to be sold, the question is when. Liz to whom . The question is when. Liz why not to whom . The stock has to go down. And i think what you have, see from the street right now is that and theyre fessing up to it, that this is a company with very, very slow low growth metrics, and they dont have the c suite management to handle it liz its 31. 33. Jeff green, the billion power in investor who came on right. Look at that chart. Liz twitter at 72, he said its got to go to 30, and then its the price to buy. Yes, then it is. Its a take at. I dont think theres going to be much of a premium unless youre someone like Mark Zuckerberg who really loves this product. Liz you say when, i say who. A perfect fit for google. I know. And cara swisher came out, the great tech reporter came out and said, you know, google is a more likely candidate than facebook, she believes. Liz would you agree they had nine years after twitter to figure out how to monetize, and they just couldnt do it. I just dont think they have the management. Jack dorsey, i mean, listen, if he were a woman, they would say and this is where sexism comes in in Corporate America they would say, well, you know, this is just a face, you know what im saying . I mean, he doesnt, he doesnt know how to manage. Of. Liz you had evan and wiz, but they brought in cost low. Costolo, who hated charlie and me. Was he good looking . Liz all i know is he wouldnt talk to us, and look where his career ended. Thats what happened to him. [laughter] door can citys a better i think dorseys a better looking guy. What do they call guy became goes . Bimbos . Gimbos. Hes a good looking guy liz charlie, we have some break news, but you get to stick around for it because its a big media and entertainment story. It is this coming up with the closing bell just about 20 41 minutes away, we have the disappearance of Malaysian Airlines flight mh370. It did mystify the world, but now new clues from the remoment island in the middle of the indian ocean. Were going to get you the very latest on that. And here comes the media story. The social network was Relativity Medias biggest hit at that studio, but now in just the last hour we have learned the company has filed for bankruptcy. Its ceo, ryan kavanaugh, looking for new friends to keep the studio alive. The latest in this hollywood saga. Very rare that a studio is suddenly up for grabs. Who wants it . Thats next on countdown. [announcer ] what if one stalk of broccoli could protect you from cancer . What if one push up could prevent Heart Disease . [man grunts] one wishful thinking, right . Here at accuweather, we get up to 10 billion Data Requests every day. The cloud allows us to scale up so we can handle that volume. We can help keep people safe; and to us that feels really good. Liz so this is a very interesting and Stunning Development in a way. Take a look at those people and what they are picking up. Those are pieces of what may be malaysian flight mh370 which, of course, disappeared a month last march. Debris found on an island in the indian ocean, its called reunion island, is on its way to france to see if it matches the missing plane. Investigators say the twometerlong object very likely from a boeing 777, that is same model as mh370. There were 239 passengers and crew onboard when it disappeared in march of 2014. A big mystery, maybe its closer to being solved. We have breaking news out of hollywood. Ryan kavanaughs Relativity Media has filed chapter 11 bankruptcy after missing loan payments and laying off 75 employees. This has been widely expected, but people were wondering could he pull it out . Could he save the company he founded . But even before filing for bankruptcy, potential buyers were circling around like vultures including or member seagulls maybe sea seagulls investor carl icahn. On top of the story today, claire atkinson, New York Post senior media reporter, along with Charlie Gasparino who intimately knows the thinking of carl icahn. Yeah, i know how he talks. Liz claire, this is stunning. So today, and it was just in the past hour we found out he has, indeed, filed for bankruptcy of what was the Company Behind the social network, the fighter. Mortals, right. Cbs, actually, is going to make a tv series out of the movie, limitless, so well see what happens with that. The papers are in, i guess we wait for the bankruptcy judge to begin proceedings. Were already starting to see all of the vultures deciding this is a great asset, what can we do, can we buy something here at a cut rate price . Obviously, the debt holders are wondering are we going to get our money back. Liz and the debt, 320 million, so there are a lot of creditors waiting to get their money out. But who are the potential vultures or seagulls who swoop down and pick up the fish . Right. Liz very rare for our viewers that you see a studio of this maturity go up for, on the block. Absolutely. Liz so amg, is it a paraannouncement, is it paramount s it a warner . Well, i think theres going to be a whole host of folks. Carl icahn is one of them theyre both gazillionaires. Carl is worth 20, i think, and how much is carlos slim worth . 60 billion, i think. Liz hes the richest. And how much is the price . The debt is 320. Right. I think theyre a going to come up with a bit more than that, because i hear the 320 is a big chunk of it, but theres also a bit more. Say he goes for 500 million, and carl can afford that, and so can slim. The question is, i dont know slim as well, but this seems like an odd investment for carl, right . This is not what he generally does liz although he did have a stake this mgm, and he made a lot of money. Back in 2012, he had a 25 but he usually flips it. Liz what does he need this headache for, charlie . You know, i dont know, you know . I may want it. I may want to go to the movie. Liz to somebody who needs a studio, and that would be a netflix, the new players, the amazons of the world, are they interested . Listen go ahead, im sorry. Were not hearing those names yet, but i would imagine anybodys going to take a look. You want to know what the finances are, why it has an amazing deal with ryan has an amazing deal with netflix. Its not often you get a big studio coming up a distressed sale like this. If carl gets in this, its even a bigger story because it would show that hes doing something different. Listen, hes 80 years old or 75 the key, i think s the son. He wants a studio to run. Does he . You heard that . Thats good, good stuff. Thats why carl wants to buy lions gate way back when. Whoa. Liz give the kid what he wants. [laughter] you want to give your kid poor kid. Can you imagine being carl icahns kid . Liz as you look and see the value of this, this was ryan kavanaughs baby, and hes an interesting guy. He came from wall street. I had an opportunity to interview him back during the milliken event, this was a come years ago, but were the only two redheaded jews in hollywood, i think. [laughter] ill tell you, he is so passionate, this has got to be breaking his heart, and he has to sell his malibu house. This is an interesting event, if not a fall from grace in a way. Very sad for him. Is he personally on the hook for a lot of this stuff . A lot of guys separate thats a good question. We saw that he sold his house this week. There will be questions about how much is comingled, if any. Yeah. People would want to know that. But i do think its a sad story for him because just a year ago i was writing in the post that, you know, they were looking at a billion dollar ipo next year. Oh, god. Liz i know. So were a long way from that story. Liz claire breaks immaterial. You know, claire, you didnt call me up for a comment. [laughter] how come you didnt call me, you know . I always call. Oh, come on. Liz okay. Whats wrong with you . Liz charlies version of carl icahn. Sounds just like him, you have to admit. Liz read her column, shes awesome. Charlie, thank you. Closing bell, were 30 minutes away. Tom brady hits the field today for the very first time for this season with the World Champion patriots since, of course, the decision that the fourgame suspension stays. But hes already racked up his first loss of the season. Yes, that happened within the last 36 hours. We have the latest on deflategate straight ahead. And the 2016 president ial race getting more interesting as new polls show trump beating bush, bush beating hillary, hillary beating trump. Can you follow all of that . Our Political Panel tells us whos really leading the 2016 race, as early as it is. Thats next on countdown. Dont move. Dow jones industrials up seven points. Liz a teeny bit of air, the markets are catching it right now. The nasdaq up about 23 points, the Dow Jones Industrials with a sevenpoint gain. Kind of a turn around because we were lower earlier today. Couple things that i just need to remind you of. We got firsttime jobless claims for the week hovering at 40year lows, we got the gdp Second Quarter print, up 2. 3 , expectation was 2. 6 . At the moment, a couple of issues, but the markets seem to be absorbing it. Running to record highs, weve got two footwear companies. Check out these two, they are hitting record highs, sketchers and steve madden reported better than expected earnings and revenue figures. Sketchers is benefiting from strong shipments of back to school items. So theres still a long tail with the west coast issue thats finally working its way through, shares moving higher by 16 . A little bit of a reversal for steve hand, but it did hit a new 5 2kweek high earlier, down 1 at the moment. We are one week out from the fox news debate from the gop candidates for president. Where does everybody stand . There is a new poll coming out, quinnipiac poll, and it is showing that donald trump is in the lead were talking the way lead. Hes getting 20 of the vote followed by scott walker who has 13 and jeb bush. Jeb bush has 10 . The only two to edge even close. Heres where it gets interesting. Once trump gets past the primary, the clouds start to circle over his head. He would lose to, ready . Hillary clinton, joe biden who hasnt even announced yet and Bernie Sanders in headtohead matchups. All of them would beat him by a comfortable lead. Lets bring in bob cusack, editorinchief at the hill along with chris hahn, former aide to senator chuck schumer. Gentlemen, there is no denying trump is a player. Hes not only a player, he is first in a first string of players here. Bob cue cusack, what does this mean at least when he pairs off against the gop candidates . Certainly, hes going to be subject to attack in that debate next week, and i think theyre going to attack him with those numbers that, hey, listen, you may be winning the field now, but overall if you cant beat Hillary Clinton, well, then republicans shouldnt vote for him. So i think theyre going to go after him. I think jeb bush is also going to be attacked because he is at the top as well. Its going to be very entertaining, but donald trump better have his answer ready of why hes trailing Hillary Clinton so badly. Liz were running out of space on that graphic. [laughter] nobody else better announce on the gop side. Chris, biden beats donald trump, and biden hasnt even announced. So here comes the question, will joe biden, the current Vice President , be emboldened by these polls and say maybe this is my last shot, maybe i ought to get in here . You know, liz, theres been a lot of talk about biden, will he wont he run, but, you know, he has been very silent on that. In fact, he has said many times hes not running for president. The only way i see him getting into the race is if hillary either takes herself out or has a serious stumble. What weve been seeing from the right attacking hillary is basically more of the same. So unless it goes further than that, i dont see any reason why joe biden would get into the race. Liz bob, what about jeb bush . Now hes trending third against donald trump. Does he need to be a little more vocal and at that debate that is going to be on fox news in one week, does he need to come out swinging . I think to some degree, he does. Hes been very critical of trump and their strategy is to make jeb bush look, the jeb bush team, to make jeb look like hes the adult in the room, that hes not attacking john mccain. A lot of the headlines recently have been jeb bush and donald trump, so you can make a very good case that trumps rise has actually helped bush because trump voters are not jeb bush voters. The other thing jeb bush is going to be attacked on is Immigration Reform as well as his support for common core, and there are going to be most of the people on that stage dont support those programs. So both trump and jeb could be on the defensive come thursday night. Liz we had Hillary Clinton speaking in the last hour and, chris, she had to answer a few questions. One of them has just popped up recently where theres some question as to whether she intervened on behalf of ubs, the Swiss Banking giant, in a legal case while her husband, bill clinton, was taking money from ubs, for his foundation. She actually stood there and whether you give a nonanswer or an answer, she took questions on it. I think she needs to do more of that. Oh, yeah. Look, i think always you have to address accusations. But lets be clear here, liz, this is part 37 of the 5,000part series conservatives will put about the scandals of the clintons. And, frankly, in politics people have a general feeling that politicians are in and of themselves corrupt. So unless somebodys going away in chains or theres an actual indictment. It really doesnt matter because i think to the average voter they think that every politicians washing each other hands and doing favors for their friends. I dont know those kind of accusations matter, and they really only serve to stir up the conservative base. Hawaii liz were watching this closely, and its going to get more and more interesting as time goes by. Bob cusack, thank you. The hill editor this chief, and chris hahn, rate owe host radio host. Good to see you. Closing bell, we are about 20 minutes away. The dow is negative only by five points, but were watching that for you. Sylvester stallone not hanging up his gloves just yet as rocky, but hes letting a few lucky fans get their hands on some memorabilia at least. Were going to tell you how you can get a piece of real hollywood history. And as Quarterback Tom Brady heads to practice with the patriots, the Players Union is fighting tooth and nail for him off the field. That union and, hence, tom brady, just lost a major ally that could potentially cost them the entire war. Stick around, were getting to that as more countdown comes your way. Dont move. Mom has always been one of those people who needs to keep busy. If shes not working in her garden, shes probably on one of her long walks with bailey. Liz sly stallone sharing the rocky and rambo love. Heres what hes doing, you might want this. Hes putting hundreds of props and costumes up for auction in october. Now, some of the items he has agreed to sell include rockys gloves, the robe, the boxing trunks and rambos army jacket. Sly promises a portion of the profits will go to benefit military charities. Good for him. It was day one of practice in fox borrow stadium today as tom brady and the rest of the patriots get ready for the 2015 season. Now, off the field the Nfl Players Association learned that the petition to overturn bradys suspension was denied by whom . The minnesota judge they had shifted it to hoping hed be friendlier to the Players Union and to tom brady. Now, as the Players Union is being forced to refile in new york, less friendly because, of course, the nfl headquarters are here, will this hurt bradys chances of winning an appeal . With us now, forbes executive editor and host of forbes sports money. Of course, this over deflategate. They thought they were going to get that minnesota judge to be on their side, didnt they . Didnt work out. They wanted it bigtime, liz. That minnesota judge has been friendly, minnesota in general, right . We saw it with the the Adrian Peterson case. He punted, however, its back in new york. I think this hurts bradys chances bigtime because, remember, this was going to be over procedural matter, not really was there enough evidence over brady deflating the balls or not. Liz well, listen, this is all over a game, the 2015 afc championship game against the Indianapolis Colts where the balls disappeared, and when they found them once again and they tested them halfway through the game on a tip from the colts, they found that these balls that tom brady was hold anything that little paw of his, had been deflated below the required 12. 5 pounds per square inch. Theyre going to argue on bradys side that there was no rule that you couldnt fool around with the balls. I mean, forget the fact there was a rule that it cant be below this many pounds per square inch, theyre trying to say he shouldnt be penalized for some phantom rule that didnt even exist. Does that fly . The willis report doesnt have any hard liz the wells report. Wells, thank you. A lot of circumstantial evidence. But, you know, i think weve also got to look at the game, right . As football fans, you and i, the first half was kind of really close. The second half when they know that brady had the balls with the proper amount of air in them, he blew out the colts. He had one of his best halves ever. So if im the rest of the nfl, i kind of hope that brady uses deflated footballs. Liz warmed up by then he was warmed up by then. [laughter] mike, look, if you dont follow the rules, then why have rules . Thats the thing. Heres whats suspicious, you know, we pulled this quote from the wells report from, basically, an assessment from an interview with one of the referees. It was the first time in, this referee, walt andersons 19 years as an nfl official that he simply could not locate the game balls at the start of the game. Now, the allegation is they end up in the locker room, and they were sucking air out of them so that he, tom brady, could grip that ball. At what point do you punish people or not punish them . Look, theres a lot of mischievous activity that goes on in sports all the time. I have no doubt that there were people in the organization that were trying to get the balls to bradys comfort level, as close as possible. But, i mean, come on. Seriously . You have Nothing Better to do . Again liz well, okay, fine. Does the nfl, mike, have to resort to being Like Major League baseball where the officials walk out with the balls dont get me started on the bats, because each guy brings their own bat they look at them and the officials say, play ball. Is that whats going to happen with football . Theyre move anything that direction already this year, liz. Theyre going to have balls much more under their control, much more like in basketball where the league supplies the balls and the teams dont supply the balls. Its getting too purified, in my opinion liz well, i would just like to say i am not conflicted at all. No, me either. [laughter] liz wearing my Cleveland Browns hat. [laughter] your days coming soon. Good draft pick, got a new owner, youre moving in the right direction. Liz i think so too, mike, thank you so much. I really appreciate that. My browns are going to win one day.
