He made the announcement to students Wednesday afternoon in a video, making it clear that the commencement plans are still contingent on the impact of the COVID-19 virus locally.
“But assuming we can stay where we are today, commencement will be pulled off in that fashion,” Martin said.
Since the fall, the university has offered a mix of in-person and virtual learning models, with those who visit the Fort Myers campus for work, class or activities expected to wear face masks, practice proper hygiene and maintain safe physical distances form others.
When the 2020 springtime shutdown led college campus to pivot to distance learning, graduation plans were cancelled and reworked with safety in mind. Virtual ceremonies, a norm for the Class of 2020 nationwide, were employed, with summertime and fall FGCU graduates having similar events.
