Tammy what youve got to do, rebudget. Im one of those people. A lot of people my generation and slightly younger, this is about graduate school, right. That you took out huge loans for careers and training that were really supposed to deliver for you and your family. But with you see that, a focus of course before in the last decade or so about degrees and training that perhaps did not translate into real jobs. And i think that that kind of creates the dynamic of people asking really what did we pay for, why were we in this kind of a field of study if it is not delivering careers and a job and a way for us to move forward in society, even whether its a twoparent household or not, whatever you wanted to do, its interesting that people dont seem to have the money to pay back a loan that was supposed to get you that career and moving forward so that becomes a bigger issue. In the meantime, we didnt expect this kind of an economy, either. Where you know, you have to pay the loan, we have not had to pay it for three years and now suddenly even more of the economy is worse. So, this creates questions for higher education, and what people have been studying and whether or not its been worth while. John i remember following marco rubio during the 2016 campaign and one of the things he talked about on the Campaign Trail was there needed to be transparency, david, among higher institutions of learning, institutions of Higher Learning that, you know, if you chose greek philosophy as a major they had to say here is how many jobs there are for greek philosophers. But you know, you feel for folks who are now suddenly having to redo the budgets, between 70 billion and and more, and people say why should taxpayers be on the hook for education they chose . David it speaks to the fact what President Biden has focused on, the fact that middle class families should be on the Endangered Species list here in the United States and will be extinct unless government interaction happens, and yes, transparency is important, but talking about that bulk of student debt that is straddling middle income families, and you showed the graph, it doesnt matter how old you are, almost every family is impacted some way or another by this and President Biden is trying t find a way. John, good afternoon to you. Were at the epicenter of what is a nationwide strike by Kaiser Permanente workers. This is one of the largest hospitals in the Kaiser Network in the country. Hundreds have been out here all day joining thousands of Healthcare Workers nationwide that say they have no choice to be here. Kaiser has allowed Staffing Drop to dangerously low levels and wages to fall well behind inflation. They have a simple message for kaiser. Listen here. Come to the table and bargain in good faith. Were here doing the work. You know, lets resolve this Staffing Crisis so we can get back to business. Now, kaiser says it is trying to get back to business. It is negotiating in good faith. They sent us a Statement Today which read in part, theres been a lot of progress with agreements reached on several specific proposals late tuesday. We remain committed to reaching a new agreement. Some signs of progress, john. At the moment, the workers are determined to stay out for the full three days and they say if they dont get an agreement within the next 72 hours, there will be more strikes to follow. As for patients, this will affect patient care. These are not doctors. Theyre not frontline nurses but theyre all the Support Staff for those doctors and nurses. By their own admission, kaiser says patient care is affected. You cannot run a doctors office, a clinical clinic, a hospital without staff aside from the doctors and nurses. Is there any kind of Emergency Backup Plan that kaiser can seize on in this moment to try to help their patients . They are doing that, gillian. They have backup workers, but nowhere what is needed. Were not at the point where theres scabs, people that are not officially working for them. Were talking about one of the biggest Healthcare Services in the country that has 40 hospitals, 13 million patients and 700 doctors offices or clinics. At the heart of this, the idea that they were already short staffed as what Jonathan Hunt pointed out. I have to point out my bias. Im biassed on behalf of the workers here. Ill tell you why. You cant run an o. R. Without o. R. Workers. We rely on the xray technicians to make sure the xrays and cat scans are do the right way. Patients will tell you a lot of times the xray technician know whats theyre reading. Its not just ask the doctor. They make patients very comfortable. Another thing, i need sanitized rooms. My patients know that. They need to know where theyre being seen in my office, in my exam room have to be sterile. Throughout the pandemic, these are heros because they decreased the risk of covid spread. We thought at the Beginning Covid will spread all over from the xray and cat scans and mris and doctors offerses and rooms. These particular workers kept things clean. Kept things from spreading. What are they asking for, gillian . Theyre asking for 25 an hour with up to 7 two years later and another 6. 2 two years after that. Minimum wage in a lot of places is 15 an hour. I dont think theyre asking for much, especially because of the conditions they work in. I think theyre heros. Dr. Siegel, american patients have been complaining for years now about the corporatization of healthcare in this country. Were starting to hear that doctors are not particularly happy with the current State Of Play either. Now were seeing everybody else in the Healthcare System is equally unhappy. Who is profiting off of this . Well, its the Insurance Companies. Sometimes its the medical centers. By the way, we doctors dont have an effective union. At least these workers have unions. Youve seen nurses striking. The computerization of everything added more paperwork. Covid reminded us theres more risk. I dont think the Insurance Companies or the Healthcare Systems are necessarily thinking of this. Were overworked and were disgruntled, understaffed and underpaid.
