I spent of time in i spent a lot of time in india and they have curry in india and they have curry in india for breakfast. Obviously all so this is all the time. So this is actually beautiful. Have something, you it . Is to have something, you know, like curry instead. Buffet curry buffet. I often do that too. It would be nice to hear from you today because theres such a lot on thats very, very lot going on thats very, very dismal and dire in the news. We need pepper programme need to pepper the Programme Today something a bit today with some something a bit lighter as well to remind us, you know, why were all here. Really so lets get on with the top news story of the day. The Palestinian Islamist group hamas launched its biggest attack on israel with israeli officials reporting around 2500 rockets being fired from gaza as well as sending fighters across the border. Border. Hamas militants and expectedly stormed the southern towns across the region on a jewish holiday where residents were urged to stay close to bomb shelters through these attacks, hamas fighters killed , were hamas fighters killed, were told, at least 250 israeli jews throughout the day and escaped then back into gaza with dozens of citizens who are being held hostage. In response to the hostage. In response to the surprise attack , more than 230 surprise attack, more than 230 gazans were killed when israel responded with one of its most devastating days of retaliatory strikes. Strikes. And then the israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, declared that israel would take mighty vengeance and promised to reduce gaza to rubble after the deadliest day of violence in israel since the yom kippur war. Exactly 50 years ago, fighting between both sides continued overnight in parts of southern israel , and reports now suggest israel, and reports now suggest that at least 480 israelis and palestinians are now confirmed dead. Now, following the attacks here in the uk , the met police here in the uk, the met police have ramped up Police Patrols across london to target individuals, celebrate doing these awful attacks in public. Well, joining us now to go through all of this is middle east security analyst Seth Frantzman. Thanks for joining east security analyst Seth Frantzman. Thanks forjoining us on breakfast. Seth, on this sombre day , i guess the first sombre day, i guess the first question we have to ask is how did this attack happen in the first place . There are there are talk of a huge security lapse and what is a known weak point historically for attacks into israel . Israel . Yeah , i mean, i think its yeah, i mean, i think its unprecedented. Unbelievable what were just seeing still some of the images that are coming in from the destruction along the border and just learning some more of the reports that the terrorists were able to penetrate at 29 different locations, apparently. So it was a it was a huge and unprecedented attack. And it does appear to be a huge lapse in security. I mean, there are a lot of civilian communities along the border, but those communities have faced threat, you know, since the 1950s. So this is a known quantity. This kind of threat. I think there is a of questions about how a lot of questions about how its that these these its possible that these these people were able to penetrate. Obviously, israel has a lot of high and think High Tech Technology and i think perhaps whats being learned this in the end this morning is that in the end of day, you know, you cant of the day, you know, you cant just on cameras just count on cameras and sensors and artificial intelligence. In the end of the day, have to have people day, you have to have people there to stop this kind of this kind threat in a very kind of a threat in a very conventional in a very conventional in a very conventional manner that would have done, know, have been done, you know, decades ago. So theyre trying decades ago. So theyre trying to pick up the pieces. And obviously, you know, tens of thousands people being thousands of people are being called up reserve duty. And called up to reserve duty. And i was there the border was down there on the border yesterday. Saw, you know, yesterday. We saw, you know, just endless streams of just endless, endless streams of jeeps and army going jeeps and Army Vehicles going in. Were seeing civilians in. And we were seeing civilians being evacuated there, going being evacuated out there, going to i think almost all to evacuate, i think almost all the communities on the on the border of gaza, apparently, i mean, some of the commentators in the British Press this morning are calling it israels 9 11 moment. I think in as much as the fact that it seems to have come out of nowhere, this unprecedented huge attack. Was unprecedented huge attack. Was it a huge failure . Do you think, on the part of Israeli Intelligence . Its. I mean, it intelligence . Its. I mean, it would appear so because the fact that hamas , which, you know, that hamas, which, you know, israel has fought , you know, i israel has fought, you know, i dont know, maybe a dozen different campaigns against hamas, usually quite short conflicts in which it had appeared that hamas was generally isolated and unable to inflict a lot of damage because israel had a lot of Technology Like iron dome and things. Hamas has carried out a very different of attack with different type of attack with kind human of fighters kind of human waves of fighters coming on on motorcycles and things like that. Coming on on motorcycles and things like that. But i think if things like that. But i think if we try to compare it to 911, i mean, on strict casualty note, mean, on a strict casualty note, it i think times it is i think several times worse than 9 11 per capita for israel. And i think actually what makes worse than 9 11 is what makes it worse than 9 11 is the that were able to the fact that they were able to cart of civilians. Cart off dozens of civilians. I dont think, you know, al qaeda when they the when they when they attacked the world they didnt world trade centre, they didnt then carry away, you know, 400 americans to afghanistan. Americans back to afghanistan. So i think that actually were looking something is looking at something that is much harrowing and hellish much more harrowing and hellish in terms of what the what has happened here. And think its happened here. And i think its going very, very difficult going to be very, very difficult in the weeks for israel in the coming weeks for israel to make the kind of decisions its going need make, its going to need to make, because you all these because you have all these civilians now being being held in gaza. Civilians now being being held in so a. Civilians now being being held in so youre talking to us from so youre talking to us from jerusalem. Seth, the idf has jerusalem. Seth, the idf has vowed that the hamas has opened the gates of hell. And there is now talk of huge vengeance. So now talk of huge vengeance. So whats the mood on the ground in jerusalem . Presumably, people are very scared. You can you can hear the bombs going off. How sombre is the mood where you are today. I think we seem to. Is he today. I think we seem to. Is he there . I think he can still hear us. You can see the live pictures. We were just wondering, were seeing live pictures from israel, not sure which city were actually looking at, but were actually looking at, but we know thats gaza. We know that youre in jerusalem. How that youre in jerusalem. How has it been overnight for you . Has it been overnight for you . Well i think people here are concerned. I mean, they feel there may be a lack of security. You know, they wonder about whether communities are safe. But in general, you know, a lot of people the army, people are going to the army, lots people are being called lots of people are being called up. I think theres certainly a lot unity. The country has lot of unity. The country has been through conflicts in the past, people are past, but i think people are really with images really shocked with the images that online. So that theyre seeing online. So i think the social media, you know, is causing people to be really concerned about this really concerned about how this happened. Leave it there okay. Well leave it there for moment. Thank very for the moment. Thank you very much, was middle much, indeed. That was middle east security analyst Seth Frantzman talking to us from jerusalem. Jerusalem. Back to domestic politics now and the Labour Party Conference in liverpool kicks off today and its likely to be the last before next years expected general election. Before next years expected gerthe election. Before next years expected gerthe labour n. Before next years expected gerthe labour leader , sir keir the labour leader, sir keir starmer, heads to gathering starmer, heads to the gathering with a Comfortable Lead in the polls after the partys so called seismic win in the rutherglen by election in scotland. But what can we expect from today . Well, lets bring in our today . Well, lets bring in our Political Correspondent catherine forster, whos in liverpool. Good morning to you, liverpool. Good morning to you, catherine. So mood is high in the labour camp. Theres very much talk of keir starmer as a Prime Minister in waiting. Hes Prime Minister in waiting. Hes been openly mocking the tory Party Conference in the press today as a farce from start to finish. What can we expect to hear from the labour party in the next few days . Catherine yes, well they are in a very positive mood. Of course, only just on friday they had that huge win in scotland where there was a 20 swing and they absolutely smashed the snp. So they really feel now that they have a path to power. They are still around 20 points ahead in the polls. But of course they need to put out a positive vision, dont they, because a lot of the poll lead seems to be quite soft in that many, many people are very fed up with the conservative government had 13 years. Government theyve had 13 years. Taxes are at a 70 year high. Pubuc taxes are at a 70 year high. Public services are not in a good state. That doesnt mean, however, necessarily that they are enthusiastic about keir starmer or that keen on labour or even if they really know what it labour stands for. So their mission this week will be to set out a positive vision about what they will do in government, what they will do in government, what they for , stand and if not the they for, stand and if not the conservatives , why then . So we conservatives, why then . So we do expect to hear some policy announcements. Theyve had a lot announcements. Theyve had a lot of criticism, havent they, for being rather willie and they are going to have to set out their stall now. We hear constantly about rishi sunaks five pledges. Theyre not going terribly well. We hear much less about about Keir Starmers five missions, but i think were going to hear a lot about them this week and Angela Rayner, the deputy leader , shadow levelling up secretary will be speaking about half 11 this morning. And those missions , ill remind you, are the fastest growth in the g7. Were back to talking about growth like liz truss. But of course desperately needed then being a clean Energy Superpower, making the nhs fit for the future and spreading opportunity everywhere about education an about skills and also crime. So we hear a lot and also crime. So we hear a lot of announcements. Weve already of announcements. Weve already had a couple about the nhs , had a couple about the nhs, about scanners, £1. 5 billion to bnng about scanners, £1. 5 billion to bring down the waiting list. Weve also had an announcement about housing so much more to come. I suspect. But certainly labourin come. I suspect. But certainly labour in a great mood. Catherine, thanks very much indeed. Well be coming back to you often throughout this mornings programme. So thank you. Joining us now is harry phibbs, whos local government editor of conservative home. And interestingly , i see that keir interestingly, i see that keir starmer , while hes actually starmer, while hes actually riding high, is saying to the rest of the party, dont get giddy over the prospect of an election win. You wont get election win. You wont get razzmatazz, you wont see mistakes that have been made in the past by opposition parties. Hes probably right to be cautious, isnt he . Yes he certainly i dont think expecting giddiness or razzmatazz from keir starmer. Razzmatazz from keir starmer. Its very likely he he i dont think he compares well in terms of his his personal charisma with other politicians. I mean, rishi sunak isnt the most charismatic person, but, but rishi sunak had a had a very impressive Party Conference speech i thought introduced by his wife. So i think those that on that sort of president ial contest, i dont think keir starmer performs performs too well. The other problem i think is for labour, they theyre trying to get across two contradictory messages. One is that, you know , how disastrously that, you know, how disastrously badly the country countrys going and all the gloom and doom. And the other thing is that we should all be reassured that we should all be reassured that they wont change anything much, that theyll be very, very cautious and responsible. And so we dont need to be frightened of anything a Labour Government would do. So i think thats theres a sort of contradiction in the core message there offering. Absolutely. Well, well wait absolutely. Well, well wait and see for the big speeches, some of which are going to be happening today to see whether they have any more to say on that. Thank you very much indeed. Move on right now. Well move on right now because its coming up to because its just coming up to quarter six. If youve quarter past six. And if youve just joined us, a reminder of the top stories this morning. The israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to take revenge against hamas. Rishi sunak , meanwhile, says the rishi sunak, meanwhile, says the uk government, stan , is in full uk government, stan, is in full solidarity with israel against, quote, the cowardly and depraved attacks from the palestinian militant group. Militant group. And as weve just heard, the Labour Party Conference kicks off today in liverpool, gb news is there bringing you every twist and turn from sir Keir Starmers final conference before the general election next year. Yean and of course well be bringing you all the sports news with aidan magee as apparently Manchester United defied the odds at old trafford, she said, as though she what she was as though she knew what she was talking in her last gasp talking about in her last gasp comeback against brentford. But he knows lot more than he knows an awful lot more than i and hell be telling you i do, and hell be telling you all that. All about that. Now. Former us President Donald Trump has been travelling across america in his campaign to become the 2024 republican nominee for president. This weekend, hes travelled far and wide. Hes gone to the midwestern state of iowa 100 days before they vote at the caucuses. As we said, he drew large crowds as he blamed his success over President Joe Biden for hamass surprise attack on israel. Israel. And even though a judge ruled last month that trump committed fraud, its still thought by many to be trumps nomination to lose. But lets hear what greg swensen, chairman of republicans overseas , has to say. He joins overseas, has to say. He joins us now in the studio. Thanks very much for coming in. Its all its all so contrary whats happening in the states at the moment, but it certainly still looks to the rest of us as though President Trump could be the next president. Hes got great name recognition. Its really hard to fight that, especially early on in the process when people arent really attention very really paying attention very much to the to the campaigns. Right now. Theyre starting to in the other early in iowa and the other early states. Hes starting with states. So hes starting with this great advantage over over the other competitors , but also the other competitors, but also the other competitors, but also the indictments over the last few months have really helped him. And so, yes , i mean, thats him. And so, yes, i mean, thats extraordinary. Its really counterintuitive. You know, last april , before the alvin bragg april, before the alvin bragg indictment, desantis was only 12 points behind trump. And then points behind trump. And then you had the new york alvin bragg indictment. That was a huge bump. The subsequent indictments. And then, of course, the mugshot helped him more and not quite as much as the first one. But you know, i think voters, many voters on the republican side are looking at this as a real witch hunt and the weaponization of the justice system. So gets some sympathy system. So he gets some sympathy for or he plays the martyr for that or he plays the martyr and it very well. And hes doing it very well. Greg, campaign and greg, on the campaign trail iowa, events overtook trail in iowa, events overtook matters, course, the israel matters, of course, the israel incident happened and trump was quick to cash in on this, standing very strong with israel. Were going to war with communists, fascists, racists, marxists , some very evil people, marxists, some very evil people, he said that hamas will be crushed and avenged, but then turning his cannon , as it were, turning his cannon, as it were, on biden, 6 billion given to iran, millions and millions given to palestine, effectively saying biden has his fingerprints , has been fingerprints, has been bankrolled in what happened yesterday in israel. Very strong words, of course, and he does he does it in a different way. Its very trumpian. You know , the other trumpian. You know, the other candidates and other republicans in were also so in leadership were also so critical of biden and pointed the finger at him. So its not just trump, but he does it in his own his own way. And it maybe has some more punch to it. But, you know, Governor Desantis was yesterday, scott was on yesterday, tim scott was on there is every on yesterday. There is every reason to think that that the Biden Administration has the fingerprints. You mentioned the fingerprints. You mentioned the aid to the 6 billion, of course, is the big number. But friday night, interesting timing. Night, interesting timing. Friday night during the quiet part of the media cycle when no ones paying attention, the secretary of state, anthony blinken, released 75 million into palestine into areas that are heavily , heavily hamas areas are heavily, heavily hamas areas. Now, internal memos in the administration, internal white house emails are suggested in the last year that there was great risk of increased violence due to this money. And the administration , in writing, said administration, in writing, said go ahead with it anyway. So this go ahead with it anyway. So this is these are troubling issues. Is these are troubling issues. And im glad that the republicans came out and criticised them. But, you know, the President Trump last night was talking about the Abraham Accords. Hes got a good point. You there was peace you know that there was peace and prosperity in middle and prosperity in the middle east. You see were on the verge of an agreement between the saudis. Abraham saudis. Remember, the Abraham Accords the accords didnt include the saudis on the verge of saudis were on the verge of this. Israel and the saudis getting together. And thats right. And could that all be at risk now . I think so. I mean, iran was obviously behind this and thats probably one of their motives is to is to delay that in any way they can and do you think all of this is International Activity . Help trump because he said a lot of people said all along, you know, afghanistan was a disaster for biden. The withdrawal, all that military hardware that was left behind, the ukrainian war, trump said. Im to have that over in im going to have that over in 24 and now he was saying 24 hours. And now he was saying this never happened this would never have happened if been in power. Is if hed have been in power. Is that bravo domestically . Is that bravo or domestically . Is that bravo or domestically . Is that and landing that playing out and landing with electorate america . With the electorate in america . Little both. I mean, a little bit of both. I mean, theres definitely President Trumps prone trumps always prone to hyperbole a bit of hyperbole and maybe a bit of exaggeration got exaggeration, but hes got a point. And thought governor point. And i thought Governor Desantis comments desantis had similar comments yesterday. So did tim scott as i mentioned. So, you know, this is a moment where people they might not miss trump, but they miss 2019. Thats for sure, because there was peace and prosperity and the abraham Abraham Accords were a major breakthrough. And but youve seen it, you know, with with afghanistan, as you mentioned, spy balloon , the mentioned, the spy balloon, the weakness has weakness that biden has demonstrated. And he also could be compromised. You know, people wonder why why was he so nice to the chinese . Why did he let that balloon fly over our military bases take pictures . You bases and take pictures . You know, could be compromised. Know, he could be compromised. You the family received you know, the family received plenty of from ccp related plenty of money from ccp related companies, but nevertheless , his companies, but nevertheless, his strong question as much as his strong question as much as his strong invective land with people, doesnt it . Instead of namby pamby just sort of, you know, Peace Keeping phrases, trump comes out with Something Like strong and people like that. They really do. And thats they really do. And thats one of the reasons he was elected in 2016. Its one of the reasons i think theres a lot of support for desantis he support for desantis because he was served his country. He was he served his country. He was he served his country. He was in the navy. He was he was in navy seals as a lawyer. In the navy seals as a lawyer. So you know, you look to people who demonstrate strength who either demonstrate strength or can can have a proven record of it. And you can you can you can look to President Trump that way because things were pretty good. And quickly. And very quickly. And very quickly. So historically, america didnt care about wars in lands far , far away. But now this far, far away. But now this seems to become in front and Centre Domestic politics. Strength on the International Stage seems to be landing. Yes. And i think you look at the difference between now and 2019, 20, its yeah, the peace and prosperity that that the americans really miss. And you bnng americans really miss. And you bring up a great point. Martin usually americans in terms of elections dont really know. Foreign policy doesnt rank in the top, but the economy has been really damaged by bidens policies, specifically by those policies. And some wonder if he did it on purpose. Why would you do this when you know that youre going to have inflation from reckless spending . You from reckless spending . You know, you if you lock down know, if you if you lock down the Energy Sector, if youre hostile to your own private sector, especially the Energy Sector, especially the Energy Sector , you know, thats going sector, you know, thats going to hurt consumers and hurt voters. Why do you do it anyway . So are real concerns. And so these are real concerns. And i say that, yes, i think you could say that, yes, Foreign Policy now is on the front page, at least for now. It is at the moment. Well, greg swenson, thank very much. Excellent. Thank you very much. Okay. Well, a very good morning to you. If youve just joined us, 6 22. Did you know its today of its the last day today of National Week . Find National Curry week . Once any other areas of fog clear off, therell be decent amount sunshine be a decent amount of sunshine for areas of for central southern areas of england wales. Temperatures england and wales. Temperatures climbing notably above average for year towards 24, for the time of year towards 24, maybe 25 c into this evening. Still come, be getting still to come, well be getting the sports news with the latest sports news with aidan discuss all the aidan magee to discuss all the fallout the football and fallout from the football and the rugby this weekend. Its a very morning to this is very good morning to you this is breakfast very good morning to you. Welcome back. Morning to you. Welcome back. Youre watching and listening to breakfast here on gb news with an and martin and aidans here with the sport. Morning. Good morning to you both. How are you . Good. Good. So well rugby world i have to confess , i world cup. I have to confess, i was draw nil was watching forrest draw nil nil crystal palace, but nil with crystal palace, but i understand england were dismal. England dismal. Yeah. England were dismal. Yeah. I mean, notwithstanding the mean, look, notwithstanding the fact they did get through against and the fact that against samoa and the fact that they the work done they got the hard work done already, won their three already, they won their three previous matches, so they were kind of home and hosed into the knockout i always knockout stage. I have always said once with said that once a side with englands one englands pedigree, i. E, one that has to that historically has got to four one them four finals, winning one of them is up against someone like is going up against someone like france new zealand or ireland france or new zealand or ireland or south africa in the knockout stage. Will be stage. I think there will be a threat. Yesterday was a dire threat. But yesterday was a dire performance against team like performance against a team like samoa only won one samoa who had only won one previous in the and previous match in the pool and that was against chile. So owen farrell, a missing farrell, missing a missing a penalty conversion result penalty conversion as a result of a out, which is just, of a time out, which is just, you thats schoolboy you know, thats a schoolboy error. Completely, error. Well, completely, completely. Were completely. I mean, there were lots for england as lots of changes for england as well. Wasnt team that well. So it wasnt the team that weve throughout the recent weve seen throughout the recent or matches having or sorry, earlier matches having said was a very easy said that, that was a very easy pull that england got through. Pull that england got through. You compare that to what what scotland with, scotland had to contend with, they africa and they had south africa and ireland in their Group Ireland in their in their group and later in the day and of course later in the day we scotland exit the we saw scotland exit the tournament against ireland. And, you know, a brilliant performance, an imperious performance, an imperious performance by ireland , number performance by ireland, Number One World for reason. One in the world for a reason. And honestly think that if and i honestly think that if theyre to going win this theyre ever to going win this world cup and they flattered to deceive past, is the deceive in the past, this is the problem them. Theyve got to problem for them. Theyve got to the quarterfinal on numerous occasions and will the quarterfinal on numerous oc thenns and will the quarterfinal on numerous oc the psychological will be the psychological barrier theyll surpass next theyll have to surpass next weekend zealand weekend against new zealand because past because theyve never been past the quarterfinal its going the quarterfinal and its going to their minds slightly to play on their minds slightly. Ill tell what,. But ill tell you what, yesterday scotland a very competent side, very, good. Yesterday scotland a very comthey1t side, very, good. Yesterday scotland a very comthey were 3, very, good. Yesterday scotland a very comthey were blown good. But they were blown apart by ireland yesterday. Question ireland yesterday. No question about sends about it. And that sends scotland home superb. In the okay. What about in the football you whove been football man you whove been on a downward lots of a real downward curve. Lots of unrest as ever from the fans about the glazers but they won 2 1 they did indeed and it was a dramatic win as well. I was actually at old trafford on tuesday night taking the galatasaray game in the Champions League. Goodness the galatasaray game in the charipions league. Goodness the galatasaray game in the chari mean, eague. Goodness the galatasaray game in the chari mean, when. Goodness the galatasaray game in the chari mean, when yourejoodness the galatasaray game in the chari mean, when youre when ss me, i mean, when youre when youre leading twice in that youre leading to twice in that game you concede on in game and you concede late on in the league game, you the Champions League game, you even even even galatasaray could even afford a penalty. It afford to miss a penalty. It really left sombre mood around really left a sombre mood around old later week, old trafford later in the week, of were hit by the of course, they were hit by the news of the wife of sir Alex Ferguson passing away, sadly, on on they a minutes on friday, they held a minutes applause for Lady Ferguson yesterday yesterday. Yesterday lady kathy yesterday. And then game itself they and then in the game itself they were losing against against brentford. Dont brentford. Brentford, i dont think won since since think had won there since since back in the back in the 30s. I think it was so they havent played much since. Played there that much since. Since should say. But since then we should say. But they were ahead with a goal from Nicolas Jensen and then come the injury the thing injury time. This is the thing when of added when you get plenty of added time. Know fergie time time. Now you know fergie time well, you could say its fergie time, its actually time, but its actually the number now number of minutes allocated. Now is much more than it was last season because of the time season because of all the time wasting been allotted for wasting thats been allotted for the of a match. But scott the end of a match. But scott mctominay, he was rumoured to be or of a bid or he was a subject of a bid from west ham united back in the summer and he comes fonnard and heads goal and then heads in one goal and then scores second very scores the second one very, very late to get them the win late on to get them the win Harry Maguire starting at centre back jonny evans that back alongside jonny evans that was premier was Leicester Citys Premier League partnership five years ago after they won the premier league even at league title. So not even at their and there turning league title. So not even at theifor and there turning league title. So not even at theifor manchesterre turning league title. So not even at theifor Manchester United. 1g out for Manchester United. And after mctominay was say and actually lay off maguire, he actually brilliant game he actually had a brilliant game he didnt because hes didnt proved it because hes been months. Didnt proved it because hes been has months. Didnt proved it because hes been has indeed onths. Didnt proved it because hes been has indeed buts. Didnt proved it because hes been has indeed but look i mean he has indeed but look i mean just hes a little bit low on confidence. Youre talking about pedigree player martin. Pedigree player here, martin. I mean, is a player whos mean, this is a player whos played international played in several International Tournaments england. Tournaments for england. And why shouldnt into the tournaments for england. And why shou united into the tournaments for england. And why shou united team into the tournaments for england. And why shou united team and into the tournaments for england. And why shou united team and play . The tournaments for england. And why shou united team and play . Well, Man United Team and play . Well, he did yesterday, certainly. And they out a win which was they edged out a win which was desperately needed. Thinking sad just thinking of that sad news Kathy Ferguson news about lady Kathy Ferguson dying, was 84, which of dying, she was 84, which sort of surprised brought me surprised me, sort of brought me up Alex Ferguson . Alex ferguson well, let me see. In birthday is on new see. In his birthday is on new years see. In his birthday is on new years oh really . Yeah. So years day. Oh really . Yeah. So he 50in 1992, so i think he was 50in 1992, so i think hes about 81. Wow. Wow. It just shows that, you know, he belongs different era, he belongs to a different era, sadly. He does still a sadly. But he does still a legend. Yeah, went on till legend. Yeah, he went on till quite late. Covered him at i mean, i covered him at Manchester United, mean, Manchester United, but, i mean, i him saying to me i remember him saying to me years years ago, he said, years and years ago, he said, im even busier im going to be even busier after retire because its all after i retire because its all about keeping brain active. About keeping your brain active. You from 110 miles an you cant go from 110 miles an hour managing an institution like Manchester United. Everything there everything that goes on there andits everything that goes on there and its much than any and its much bigger than any other in the world other Football Club in the world as well. And so two zero, you really, cant. And really, really cant. And so thats why the book tours. Thats why i did the book tours. Hes written several books. His earnings since his earnings have actually since his retirement, actually been retirement, have actually been matched retirement, have actually been matwearning at man united. Was earning at man united. He used to complain he didnt get a big salary at manchester because used to complain he didnt get a biwaslary at manchester because used to complain he didnt get a biwas all at manchester because used to complain he didnt get a biwas all incentivised,er because used to complain he didnt get a biwas all incentivised, butecause it was all incentivised, but obviously he topped his obviously he topped up his earnings semi trophies. Way, spurs are top, by the way, spurs are top, but didnt to that. But we didnt get round to that. Yeah, 24 hours they could be a obviously play a top obviously arsenal play manchester but Manchester City later today but they town. They won at luton town. Seen the david have you seen the David Beckham thing on netflix yet . Fascinated yeah im fascinated by it. Yeah its right in my time, right in the of era. The heart of my era. I interviewed him a number of times he was times as well when he was england was also england manager. He was also an ambassador company. You the so have you seen the documentary . Ive seen the first series, so the first, first so ive seen the first, first episode. Im going the episode. Im going to watch the onei its brilliant. I think its brilliant. I think its brilliant. They brought up i think its brilliant. The they brought up i think its brilliant. The picture they brought up i think its brilliant. The picture and brought up i think its brilliant. The picture and browmemories and the picture and the memories theyve elicited and the relationship between sir Alex Ferguson well. Had his ups and downs, but he had his ups and downs, but it yeah, absolutely. It was yeah, absolutely. Interviewed the two they even interviewed the two photographers they even interviewed the two photogrifollowed around. Around, followed him around. Its brilliant stuff. Couldnt recommend it more highly. Later. Highly. If youll be back later. Yes, absolutely right now its 631. This is breakfast, of course, with anne and course, on gb news with anne and martin. We think before the general election next year and the 25th National Curry week ends today. Are you heading out to your local curry house or making your own homemade ruby to celebrate the occasion . Well, well be the occasion . Well, well be speaking to wellness chef on speaking to a wellness chef on how spice up your life with. How to spice up your life with. Do stick with us, however, because coming up, the government apparently is going to crack down on sick note culture. Well be discussing that and more in headline makers coming good morning. Its 634, nearly five. Sorry to be picky. In five. Sorry to be picky. In fact, the more i talk about it, the more its going to actually be. 635 the more its going to actually be. 635 and youre watching breakfast here on gb news with me, anne martin, shall we bring you up to date with whats in the papers today and the sunday times leads on israel. As you can imagine , as hostages are can imagine, as hostages are dragged homes with dragged from their homes with families fleeing slaughter and the sunday people leads with sir Keir Starmers, £1. 5 billion plan to save the nhs and the sunday express. Meanwhile is also focusing on Hamas Terrorists who have kidnapped grandmas and children as hundreds were slaughtered in a brutal attack on israel and the telegraph says israel suffered a 9 11 moment when Hamas Terrorists killed civilians. And terrorists killed civilians. And so lets meet our headline makers today. Joining us to go through some of those headlines, at least, is the editor of spike, tom slater, and author and journalist susan holden. And journalist susan holden. Its lovely to see you both. Okay susan, were starting with keir starmer whos to keir starmer, whos going to save nhs. How he going to save the nhs. How is he going to do well, single handedly, do this . Well, single handedly, no, to. Going no, hes to. Going his plan is its all about his lovely idea that he goes on about quite a lot about taxing non doms , which apparently could non doms, which apparently could bnngin non doms, which apparently could bring in 3. 2 billion. And he has a £1. 5 billion plan to salvage the ailing nhs. It doesnt talk about ive read this a couple of times to try and find out whether he says anything about what hes going to pay wages wise and how hes going to settle that. And that isnt mentioned, apparently they mentioned, but apparently they are going to do lot more are going to do a lot more overtime, which doesnt seem to kind dont whether kind of i dont know whether thatll if work thatll be good news if you work in the that youll just be in the nhs that youll just be you have more you know, youll have a bit more money tired. Money to be very tired. About generous well, he talks about generous overtime this, this overtime pay. So this, this basically is more pay for doctors and nurses. We should doctors and nurses. We should expect from, from a labour Prime Minister. Expect from, from a labour Prime Minister. But i want to ask you about this thing and ask you as well, this thing well, tom, this thing about taxing can you taxing non doms, can you continually squeeze the pips out of the richest people or do they just kind of clear off abroad . Well, it says here and i dont know, researchers have calculated answer calculated that in answer to your question, that less than 0. 3 of those affected would leave country, which is leave the country, which is fewer than 100. How they know leave the country, which is fewer have 100. How they know leave the country, which is fewer have they how they know leave the country, which is fewer have they gone hey know leave the country, which is fewer have they gone roundiow leave the country, which is fewer have they gone round all that . Have they gone round all the non doms asked them to the non doms and asked them to fill on thats fill a form in on that. Thats got to be an estimate no. Or got to be an estimate or no. Or shall i just use the word guess . Thats got to be a guess, hasnt it . How would you know . Do what because how do you know what theyre response . Theyre going to do in response . Thats what you dont. But thats what theyre in answer to theyre telling you in answer to your obviously your question, because obviously people have asked them that before. Thats throwing and thats tom throwing that to you because its a continual thing. Were tax the thing. Were going to tax the richest. Were going to tax non doms, the non doms, were going to tax the energy old energy companies. This is old school tax socialism. School style high tax socialism. They cant tax the public anymore already the anymore. Weve already got the highest since world war highest taxes since world war ii. Work , nick . Ii. But will this work, nick . Well, its so hard to tell because anything that presents itself as kind one factor, itself as a kind of one factor, one policy solution, is obviously be ridiculous obviously going to be ridiculous. It been interesting the. It has been interesting the extent shadow extent to which the Shadow Health streeting, health secretary, wes streeting, has been talking about actual reform as well, not just talking about going about the money thats going into actually how into the nhs, but actually how services and services are delivered. And you do it would do wonder if it would take a Labour Government the Labour Government to grasp the nettle of nhs reform in the way that party couldnt that the tory party couldnt because for so many years they just time, just had to spend so much time, expend energy and breath expend so much energy and breath talking nhs is talking about how the nhs is safe in their hands. Perhaps it would government safe in their hands. Perhaps it we reopen government safe in their hands. Perhaps it we reopen that government safe in their hands. Perhaps it we reopen that debate overnment safe in their hands. Perhaps it we reopen that debate aboutnent safe in their hands. Perhaps it we reopen that debate about how to reopen that debate about how we structure the sort of language , he . Language, isnt he . Saying will die if it hes saying it will die if it doesnt yeah, but he doesnt reform. Yeah, but he hasnt quite spelt out exactly how draconian those reforms might have to be quiet and deeply unpopular , no doubt with deeply unpopular, no doubt with parts of the world. That as you put it, except that as you put it, its only the labour party that a that a Labour Government that might be might able be able to do it might be able to away it, as it were. To get away with it, as it were. What those reforms are, and what those reforms are, as hasnt really been as you say, hasnt really been spelled i think anyone whos well, i think anyone whos had any experience nhs had any experience of the nhs and broke a and my mum broke her pelvis a couple of weeks ago and any experience have of the nhs experience you have of the nhs now, have say it brings now, i have to say it brings into sharp it into very sharp relief. It is broken. No broken. There is no communication and things are not working all. So pouring money working at all. So pouring money in itjust working at all. So pouring money in it just falling in is actually it just falling down some kind of cracks and not going where it. But we already pour money in. Going where it. But we already pol exactly. in. Exactly. Exactly. Thats mean. Just thats what i mean. So just doing it it doing more of that it does it seems to me that i think people are fact that are wising up to the fact that reform not the dirty word it reform is not the dirty word it used to be something is broken that needs fix. Thats right. If you go back the blair if you go back to the blair years, of course, blair introduced of this introduced this kind of this kind public co kind of private public co option, which kind of gets airbrushed out of history. You know, blair was moderniser know, blair was the moderniser there. Labour might do there. Maybe labour might do that again. Maybe the tories cant privatise it because its such thing suggest, such a demonic thing to suggest, well, there is that. I mean, theres already been some discussion around kind of labour circles about using the private mean of private sector more. I mean of course of those kind of course a lot of those kind of pfi turned be pfi contracts turned out to be deeply because deeply controversial because they deeply controversial because the money many situations. For money in many situations. I think the problem is weve always ricocheted think the problem is weve always should, ricocheted think the problem is weve always should, should heted think the problem is weve always should, should theed between should, should the taxpayer bill . Taxpayer be more of the bill . Should of the should we be using more of the private sector . It does feel private sector . It does feel like of deeper like a kind of deeper conversation be had conversation needs to be had about the the nhs about just the way the nhs is structured. Its incredibly centralised. Theres all these centralised. Theres all these kinds which many kinds of issues which many people brought up, but you people have brought up, but you just could have just hope that we could have that debate because long that debate because for so long politicians that debate because for so long politerrified of meddling, too terrified of meddling, arent they . But it doesnt to me but it doesnt seem to me that paying amounts for that paying record amounts for overtime necessarily overtime time is necessarily what hear. What Everyone Wants to hear. More and also squeezing more money and also squeezing the in this case, the the rich in this case, the non doms for more and tax. Non doms for more and more tax. I time we did i mean, last time we did anything that was probably anything like that was probably in government in Harold Wilsons government when a brain drain. When it caused a brain drain. And i remember well, it does. But also, if youre a non dom and that amount and youve got that amount of money, you have very good accountants of work accountants who can kind of work out getting you out ways of kind of getting you out ways of kind of getting you out that and the other, out of this, that and the other, which is very annoying. But although neat although its also a very neat way rishi sunak, way of getting at rishi sunak, it is. I think thats all it is, to you really to be honest. Do you really think do. But think so . I really do. But i think so . I really do. But i think youre right. Think youre dead right. Think to mick if you think back to the mick jagger, jaggers, jagger, mick jaggers, the mccartneys richest mccartneys, all the richest people britain. Just go people left britain. Just go back. Absolutely. Back. Yeah, absolutely. Anyway, good talk nurseries, lets talk about nurseries, tom fact that weve got tom and the fact that weve got Record Number of nurseries shutting down. Yes so closures soared by 50 so the closures soared by 50 last year, which comes at the same time as the government had expanded actually the sort of nursery provision. So youve got nursery provision. So youve got a situation where youve got parents and large groups of parents and large groups of parents who are eligible for more Free Childcare and yet at the same time theyre going to struggle to the so struggle to find the places. So it just goes to show that you you offer these programs you can offer these programs and obviously you can offer these programs and obviouslnot least with people needed, not least with people trying back to work. But trying to get back to work. But at the same time, havent at the same time, if you havent got the provision there, then again, its just its a pointless exercise essentially. And youve got labour naturally on the as their conference gets undennay talking about this undennay talking about how this is indictment of the is another indictment of the conservatives pledge conservatives and of a pledge they been able to they havent been able to deliver. And whilst weve heard that times over the that so many times over the course of the past couple of days and we hear it so many times more, you cant help but feel have given feel that the tories have given them own goals them a series of own goals on these stuff. These kinds of stuff. You wonder it makes you wonder how much of true though, because of that is true though, because like, David Cameron like, for example, David Cameron brought kids and brought in vouchers for kids and thats my kids and thats when i had my kids and what happened then is because everybody what happened then is because everyboc get what happened then is because everybocget a place . Couldnt get a place . Exactly. No, its like no, exactly. No, its like free places or you then free School Places or you then you the nursery you go and knock on the nursery door say, well, sorry, door and they say, well, sorry, we have the staff. We dont have the staff. We cant its cant take you in. And its a lovely thing to write about and its thing to try. Its not a good thing to try. And you know, my heart absolutely for absolutely breaks for particularly young mums, but young dads too, obviously, who want to family, you know, and quite rightly too, but find it the only way you can keep going at the moment have two at the moment is to have two incomes really, isnt it . Youre right though, it and youre right though, it is. Is. Try and yeah. Women try and yeah. Women try and yeah. And to try and find nursery and to try and find a nursery place for children at the place for your children at the moment also is impossible. Or if you do find it horrendously expensive. Expensive. Yeah but youre right on all counts. I think its women who are affected because even if its it tends to be the its because it tends to be the one who will step back from a career kind of facilitate the one who will step back from a carethat kind of facilitate the one who will step back from a care that there of facilitate the one who will step back from a carethat there has|cilitate the one who will step back from a care that there has to itate the one who will step back from a carethat there has to bee the one who will step back from a carethat there has to be more fact that there has to be more childcare because cant childcare because you cant afford to put childcare in afford to put the childcare in so so its your so that you can. So its your career put to one so that you can. So its your caree but put to one so that you can. So its your caree but generallyt to one so that you can. So its your caree but generally speaking, side. But generally speaking, but one for the dads but then no one for the dads here, dads tend to work all the hours god sends to make ends meet and dont see the kids. So theres, theres give and take dont know take there. I dont know if anyone at moment i experience of this. Love experience of this. Id love to you. Mean maybe to hear from you. I mean maybe youre a bit me. Youre already a bit like me. Youre generation, but youre past that generation, but you must be looking in absolute angst at own children who angst at your own children who are have family but are trying to have a family but cannot find way to make it cannot find a way to make it financially worse. Or if your grandparents, youre and youre youre stepping in and youre youre stepping in and youre youre the bridge youre doing that you cant that childcare because you cant because unaffordable. Because its so unaffordable. Touch with us. Us get in touch with us. Tell us your please do. Your story. Please do. Vaiews gbnews. Com. Fascinating stuff. Granny day care. Yeah, we should have a bit more of that anyway. Susan we on to the next story. Another one here. Government chiefs to crack down on yes again on sick note culture. Yes again which is a good idea because there far too much of that. There is far too much of that. I think all kind of i think weve all kind of realised that for some reason since the pandemic, people arent as keen to go back to work they were. But this work as they ever were. But this one is going to be its planned for. Jeremy hunts autumn statement. Apparently this this kind of new policy and mel stride the work and pensions secretary and steve barclay, the health secretary, are working on plans to kind of shake things up. And its saying here that apparently gps tend to, because of the pressure on them and you only get a few minutes to kind of state your case and the quickest thing they do is agree to sign off and nine out of ten people who go in and ask for a sick note get them. Ive never asked for a sick note, so i dont what that would dont know what that would involve. Now its dont know what that would inv just now its dont know what that would inv just physical now its dont know what that would inv just physical kind now its dont know what that would inv just physical kind of now its dont know what that would inv just physical kind of thingts not just physical kind of thing. Done it . No. Are we all not done it . No. No. Ive never gone in and no. So ive never gone in and asked a note to be off asked for a sick note to be off work. Either of work. Im either just kind of ill better or ive ill and then get better or ive never for anything that never asked for anything that i needed to kind of because we tend an industry tend to work in an industry where to work, where if you dont go to work, you dont earn. True. Dont turn yes, yes. True. Dont turn up. Dont any i up. You dont get any money. I have stuff, know, have had stuff, so, you know, but never of gone. But ive never kind of gone. For me, long term but ive never kind of gone. But for me, long term but ive never kind of gone. But obviously long term but ive never kind of gone. But obviously its; term but ive never kind of gone. But obviously its notm sick. But obviously its not just physical, is it . Its Mental Health well. Mental Health Crisis as well. Youre if you yeah, youre right. If you only 6 or minutes with only get 6 or 7 minutes with your much easier for your gp, its much easier for them. And im not suggesting they easy they always take the easy way out, its easier out, but obviously its easier and quicker them to just and quicker for them to just say, right, you say, all right, well you obviously off obviously needed some time off work. You sort of rattled through tom. This just part of this is this just part of this kind of continuing . Jacob rees mogg, know, cappuccino rees mogg, you know, cappuccino class, wearing, civil class, pyjama wearing, Civil Servant , that kind of that kind servant, that kind of that kind of cliche . Is that true . And is that are there any votes in this . The difficulty is its not the sort of thing that people get out of bed and go to the voting booth over. Is voting booth over. But it is a really profound social problem that an enormous really profound social problem that of an enormous really profound social problem that of people an enormous really profound social problem that of people nowanormous really profound social problem that of people now whowus really profound social problem that of people now who are. Amount of people now who are existing on out of work benefits, disability benefits in particular, growth particular, and the big growth area people who are area has been people who are being work, things being signed off of work, things like so so like anxiety. And so on. So were talking people were not talking about people who and who are severely disabled and things is things like that. There is obviously a problem with obviously a problem partly with Mental Health, also Mental Health, but also partly with people feeling it increasingly difficult to be able go back work, go able to go back to work, to go back into world. We back out into the world. We definitely since definitely seen that rise since covid. Else, covid. And if nothing else, thats tremendous thats just a tremendous waste of potential. Work is of human potential. Work is incredibly thats incredibly positive. Thats why even quite who even people who have quite who might in some ways , might be disabled in some ways, its often positive for its often very positive for them be able to even to them to be able to work even to them to be able to work even to the that they with them to be able to work even to the hours that they with them to be able to work even to the hours that they with them to be able to work even to the hours that they with them to be able to work even to the hours that they can with them to be able to work even to the hours that they can wi some the hours that they can on some part time basis gets you out in society, some self society, gives you some self confidence. Things society, gives you some self con really 3. Things society, gives you some self con really important. Things society, gives you some self con really important. Its|gs are really important. So its not winner, but not a vote winner, but it is something which actually its more looking at theyre youre looking at theyre going it should going they said it should be more sliding so more of a sliding scale. So perhaps fully fit and perhaps youre not fully fit and perhaps youre not fully fit and perhaps need some some perhaps you do need some some time you need to time off. But you dont need to be not doing anything. Be off work. Not doing anything. There some of be off work. Not doing anything. Then of, some of be off work. Not doing anything. Then of, well, some of be off work. Not doing anything. Ther of, well, you ome of be off work. Not doing anything. Ther of, well, you omehaveof kind of, well, you can have a bit time, but you need to bit of time, but you need to kind do perhaps part of the work. Great. Okay. Well, its exactly 6 45. If youve just joined heres a quick joined us. Heres a quick reminder of the top news stories this morning. Prime minister israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vows to take revenge against hamas. Rishi sunak says the uk government stands in full solidarity with israel against the, quote, cowardly and depraved attacks from the palestinian militant group. The labour conference kicks off in liverpool. Gb news will off in liverpool. Gb news will be there, of course, bringing you every twist and turn from sir Keir Starmers final conference. Probably before the general election next year. General election next year. And lick your lips because today marks the 50th anniversary since the first commercial Radio Station launched in the country, it was a courier story. Its not in the im just so excited in the uk. Im just so excited about curry. Well be celebrating the milestone during todays remember todays show. Can you remember when you first to when you first listened to a commercial radio breakfast station . Let know. Station . Let us know. Thats an interesting one. What was the first ever commercial Radio Station in this country 50 years ago . What do country 50 years ago . What do you think . The first ever first commercial . Were not talking radio luxembourg. No, no, because that because that was the first one to have. They were pirates and they were offshore. So it was the First Official licence given to a commercial station in this commercial Radio Station in this country 50 years ago today. And it wasnt any of the offshore boys. It was a london based as a clue. Based as a clue. Oh, i cant believe you cant get it. Youve probably worked get it. Youve probably worked for it at point. Its lbc. Yeah. And then the next day, apparently was capital. Thats right. Thats right. Both in london came straight out ever since. Here we are. We also have a commercial station. Of course, if you listen on gb news thank you much. News radio. Thank you very much. Okay. The next question is then the line up, i wonder . Oh, dont know that level of. No, i dont know. Dont no, i dont know. I dont know can find out. Know that we can find that out. Yeah, worked for yeah, ive definitely worked for them, not ago. Them, but not 50 years ago. The first if youd asked me the first record that was played on radio one, known one, ive always known that. What oh, that . What is it . Oh, whats that . I think that wood and think that was roy wood and flowers rain. I think was. Oh, that lovely to. Oh, that was lovely to. Oh, that was lovely to. All right. Thats a random fact. Know random fact fact. I do know the random fact youre asking me. Youre actually asking me. Okay, i think weve got. Lets look another at lets have a look another at another newspaper story. Where have to . Weve got 2002, two. So this is a industry figures talking about the thousands of jobs which now wont materialise as a consequence of rishi sunak axing the northern leg. So when construction between birmingham and crewe was due to take place at its height, it should have employed 6500 people. And then when were talking about the crewe to manchester line, even more, 17,500 jobs. And just a bit of a reminder that as much of hs2 became a money pit and a bit of a White Elephant and all these sort of these sorts of things, sort of is you put all these is that when you put all these big Infrastructure Projects in place, have place, obviously they have all of benefits this place, obviously they have all of just benefits this place, obviously they have all of just the benefits this place, obviously they have all of just the bignefits this place, obviously they have all of just the Big Companiesthis isnt just the Big Companies which are laying track and employing thousands of people obviously supply chain, employing thousands of people obvthese supply chain, employing thousands of people obvthese small supply chain, employing thousands of people obvthese Small Businessesiin, employing thousands of people obvthese Small Businesses and all these Small Businesses and so aside from anything so on. So aside from anything else, you had a whole of so on. So aside from anything elsecountryid a whole of so on. So aside from anything elsecountry which hole of so on. So aside from anything else country which were of so on. So aside from anything elsecountry which were expecting the country which were expecting this cash this kind of inflow of cash and activity, which no longer activity, which is now no longer going whilst going to be there. So whilst obviously many people feel like weve reached the end of the line, speak, hs2 , line, so to speak, with hs2, its still the fact that for years years and years this years and years and years this was sort of was supposed this sort of stimulus supposed stimulus was supposed to be coming now isnt. And that is something affect. Wonder, suze, if i wonder, though, suze, if people are going to get their small violins out for the people who wont get jobs building something thats going to cost the rest of us £100 billion now . Presumably absolutely. And presumably there all there will be work doing all those that theyve those other things that theyve come they should come up with that they should have come with the first have come up with in the first place to right and to place to go left to right and to kind obviously, kind of obviously, anyone, again, whos travelled on any train knows theres an train knows that theres an awful lot of work that could be done and i cant why done there. And i cant see why you redeploy of you cant redeploy those kind of people those areas people into those those areas where building i also where the building works. I also read same read, i think in the same article that says that article that it says that because going that because we are going to get that train going manchester, but train going to manchester, but on the line and its on the old line and its actually itll actually be slower than it already is. I slower than it already is. I cant believe how much of a mess theyve made of it. I just cant. Thats why i have so little confidence for any the kind confidence for any of the kind of yeah, of east west. I know. Yeah, because hs2 and many people have decided very flawed and decided its very flawed and so on. Prefer didnt on. I mean, i prefer we didnt get in a situation where it was either actually either or that we could actually build but just the build things. But just the incredible expense that we have, build things. But just the incred fare expense that we have, build things. But just the incred far outstrips that we have, build things. But just the incred far outstrips what we have, build things. But just the incred far outstrips what its1ave, which far outstrips what its like france and like even in kind of france and in the amount it costs in spain, the amount it costs us per mile track to lay things per mile of track to lay things is ridiculous. You just think is so ridiculous. You just think were incapable building were incapable of building anything. Prime minister, if you were Prime Minister, would you continue it or exit . I would have continued with it just because i think we need high speed rail. Its just but at time, that has go at the same time, that has to go alongside to find at the same time, that has to go alora side to find at the same time, that has to go alora way to find at the same time, that has to go alora way to to find at the same time, that has to go alora way to reform, to find at the same time, that has to go alora way to reform, planning out a way to reform, planning laws all of this laws to get rid of all of this ridiculous kind of obstructionism, would obstructionism, which you would take that brave decision to take that big brave decision to go ahead it. Go ahead with it. Would what about you . I would have axed would axed it, but also what i would do, would go back to putting do, i would go back to putting money i leave the money into i would leave the ticket offices open. I would put more money, more people trains. I would people on the trains. I would bnng people on the trains. I would bring back the woman with the trolley who gives you a sandwich and tea. I think we and a cup of tea. I think we should british should go back to being british about actually do about trains and actually do that kind of thing and make it a joy travel way that joy to travel in a way that weve lost. Joy to travel in a way that weand ist. Joy to travel in a way that weand its interesting to see and its interesting to see youre a Black Country lass. I am. Campaigned across the am. I campaigned across the black this issue for Black Country on this issue for many, many months. I didnt meet many, many months. I didnt meet a single voter that wanted hs2. I lot of people who worked i met a lot of people who worked in who wanted it. In the industry who wanted it. These are the people crying today. And youll find of and youll find a lot of people in birmingham people in the birmingham area who their who have had their their not just homes and their just their their homes and their lives, businesses lives, but their businesses decimated compulsory decimated by the compulsory purchase. And can i just say, i purchase. And can i just say, i saw tweet yesterday saying saw a tweet yesterday saying that cheshire , that that i live in cheshire, that that i live in cheshire, that that actually were going to that we actually were going to be compulsory purchased at our house. Really . Thats not true . No. No idea why thats come from. But people just make up all sorts of rubbish they, all sorts of rubbish dont they, that we that i object to it because our house is going to be. Was nobody ever be. Well if it was nobody ever told me. So do you generally do well if your house is compulsorily well john bishop did i know that john bishop was in cheshire made in cheshire and he made a complete killing on the fact that but a lot people had that but a lot of people had obviously not the obviously were not paid the value of their houses to value of their houses and had to and yeah, and its made a huge , and yeah, and its made a huge, huge problem for people whove lost their homes and businesses and will never get that kind of and will never get that kind of and i think quite scandalously the day before rishi sunak made the day before rishi sunak made the that he was the announcement that he was going to axe the line going up to manchester, they still compulsorily purchase at somebodys house for 1. 5 million. The day before. The day before. And we all knew he was about to take this decision as well. I mean, hes been pretty clear on hs2 since he was even chancellor. He just couldnt make that decision himself. So to to just to allow that to go ahead just because youre waiting for a few days, because you to at days, because you want to say at conference just days, because you want to say at confererine just days, because you want to say at confererin the just days, because you want to say at confererin the newspapers, st days, because you want to say at confererin the newspapers, is get out in the newspapers, is genuinely outrageous. Agree. Okay. Do you i agree. Okay. Do you have time one more . Do. Time for one more . Yes, we do. Suze, the observer. Suze, lets go to the observer. Another children another school story. Children under whats going on . Schools. Whats going on . Well, yeah, its a very strange i they dont quite strange i mean, they dont quite say why the children are being excluded presumably is down to behavioural issues. But the biggest kind of shock and the reason why that has come about is that so many children are arriving at school. Apparently not being able to are not being potty trained, not language very poor , and obviously that then poor, and obviously that then theyre not able to cope in an environment where they are you know, there is a level of expectation of what your child so they are then excluded at the grand old age of five or something. Yeah, exactly. But something. Yeah, exactly. But they spoke to 1 1 head of one school who had 70 children, reception, 3080 were not potty trained. Trained. And i can i think i talked about this probably too often but but my missus is a ta. She works at nursery level and she deals this on in and deals with this on a day in and day basis. And its day out basis. And its absolutely true that there are rocketing numbers of kids. They have they have a home visit, they interview parents. Your interview the parents. Its your child, yes, child, potty trained . Yes, madam. They come to school. Madam. Yes. They come to school. Theyre not. Theyre in a nappy. And spend hours and and teachers spend hours and hours cleaning up kids and being there surrogate mothers. And when phone home, they said, when they phone home, they said, well, come and well, i cant i cant come and get my kid. And theyre dumped on the teachers. On on, on the teachers. You know, thing. And know, this is a real thing. And i weve got weve i think weve got weve had a real slip parenting real slip in parenting standards. If. What do you about that . Well. Well what . You shouldnt be doing axing as shouldnt be doing is axing as many. Start centres as many. Sure. Start centres as have been done. Weve lost over a thousand recently those a thousand recently and those kind units where you can go kind of units where you can go for advice on on for help and advice on on family, difficult having family, it is difficult having a child thrust into your child suddenly thrust into your life and bring up they dont do enough kind of preparing. No one prepares you for that in school or you know, they just expect you to grow and do you to just grow up and you do these things. Know these things. And i know everybody kind of, you know, should get on board with should kind of get on board with that. At same time, should kind of get on board with that. Are at same time, should kind of get on board with that. Are there same time, should kind of get on board with that. Are there are he time, should kind of get on board with that. Are there are key ime, should kind of get on board with that. Are there are key skills there are there are key skills that being and if you that are being lost. And if you havent way havent been brought up in a way that skills, that youve learnt those skills, then perpetuate then you just kind of perpetuate then you just kind of perpetuate the because of the same problems because one of them tom, the them this week, tom, was the Labour Party Going to teach kids how teeth exactly how to brush their teeth exactly at they up. How to brush their teeth exactly at and they up. How to brush their teeth exactly at and its they up. How to brush their teeth exactly at and its interesting. Up. How to brush their teeth exactly at and its interesting. Thats . And its interesting. Thats really nation. Like and its interesting. Thats realand nation. Like and its interesting. Thats realand i nation. Like and its interesting. Thats realand i were nation. Like and its interesting. Thats realand i were quitetion. Like and its interesting. Thats realand i were quite supportive, you and i were quite supportive, werent because, i werent we . Because, well, i just somethings be just think somethings got to be done of the nation. Well, sure people well, im sure that people used school and used to come into our school and they used to put their did they used to put their they did die there. They used to put their they did die they ere. They used to put their they did die theyere. Die. Yeah. And they did die. Yeah. And things blue and know, things went blue and you know, once, year youd once, you know, a year youd have but i think thats if have that. But i think thats if thats what they mean then thats what they mean then thats absolutely fine. But you shouldnt standing shouldnt have somebody standing over you brush over you making you brush your teeth well, teeth every morning. Well, maybe, come to this. Yeah, maybe thats how it is. I tell you . We were. Can i just tell you . We were talking being the talking about lbc being the first commercial Radio Station. Exactly 50 years ago who started off their breakfast program. A guy called david jessel. He left the bbc temporarily. Apparently and he was the first guy on lbc in the morning saying, welcome to the first commercial Radio Station here in the country. Hes now 78. I mean , i suppose hes now 78. I mean, i suppose 50 years ago he would be, wouldnt he . He went back to the bbc documentaries and bbc and made documentaries and things like that. So they are. It not it was david jessel. Its not a household name anymore, but presumably was very much then presumably it was very much then well be talking about that a bit later on in the programme as well. Fact its 50 well. The fact that its 50 years today that we had the years ago today that we had the first commercial Radio Station in this country followed by capital, as you said, the next day , 25th curry week. I love the idea that 20 old is that a 20 year old lad is cooking for mum, especially. Cooking for his mum, especially. Thats sons are into thats what my sons are so into. They great curry. Curry they cook a great curry. The only trouble is they always like far hot me. Like it far too hot for me. A a bit like this well, a bit. A bit like this lad joe on curry week says lad here, joe on curry week says this. I had no idea it was curry week, i made and week, but i made a coconut and cauliflower daal night. Cauliflower daal last night. Sounds really nice. That sounds really nice. That sounds really nice. The leftovers im enjoying the leftovers right nice curry for right now. Nice one. Curry for breakfast. Winner winner chicken dinner. But with cauliflower. Absolutely. Its as well, absolutely. And its as suzanne holder was saying earlier, her husband won noddy says that particularly likes says that he particularly likes getting a takeaway curry in the evening and always gets enough so that theres some left over in the morning because eating it cold in the morning, nothing like it. And i quite agree. But also theres something thats really brighten my day about holder about the idea of noddy holder having breakfast. Having curry for breakfast. That is brilliant. Will you be forsaking the sort of traditional sunday lunch . Do you even have a traditional sunday lunch anymore . Would you forsake though, . Would you forsake it, though, for curry today, since it is the last day of National Curry week . Vaiews gbnews. Uk from now to our top story and the Palestinian Islamic group hamas launched , as you know, an arab. Launched, as you know, an arab. By launched, as you know, an arab. By now its biggest attack on israel for years. Years with israel for years. Years with israeli officials reporting around 2500 rockets being fired from gaza as well as sending fighters across the border. Yeah, hamas militants unexpectedly stormed into southern towns across the region on a jewish holiday where residents were urged to stay close to bomb shelters through these attacks. These attacks. Hamas fighters apparently killed at least 250 israeli his throughout the day and escaped. Then back into gaza with dozens of citizens whom they took hostage in response to the surprise attack. More than 230 gazans were killed when israel responded with one of its most devastating days of retaliatory strikes. Days of retaliatory strikes. And the israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu , minister Benjamin Netanyahu, declared that israel would take mighty vengeance and promised to reduce gaza to rubble after the deadliest day of violence in israel since the yom kippur war 50 years ago, fighting between both sides continued overnight in parts of southern israel and reports now suggest that at least 480 israeli and palestinians are now confirmed as dead. And following those as dead. And following those attacks here in the uk, the met police have ramped up Police Patrols across london to target individuals celebrating those hamas attacks in public. Well, joining us now is freelance journalist plestia alucard. Hello to you. I alucard. Hello to you. I understand youre joining us live from gaza itself. Shes live from gaza itself. Shes with us. And i wanted to ask you your youre right in the thick of what is now being declared a war zone. The israeli prime war zone. The israeli Prime Minister urging gaza residents, residents to get up now before they unleash an unbearably heavy toll on your area. Tell us, what toll on your area. Tell us, what is life like in the centre of a war zone now . War zone now . Okay. First of all, i want to start by stating what happened yesterday morning and why it happened. Like the coast route of what happened. Like all the of what happened. Like all the news is saying how we started or like how hamas started and what palestinian fighters are doing. But no one has even asked himself or herself like what happenedis himself or herself like what happened is a reply to what exactly like the root cause of whats happening in israel and palestine is israel decades long violence , military occupation violence, military occupation and colonisation of Palestinian Land like if right now we want peace or we want this to stop first, we need to solve the root cause of whats happening. Like yesterday, like air raid happened. Yesterday, like air raid happened. Okay . We have more happened. Okay . We have more than 100 hostages. They have thousands of hostages from us. So whats happening . Its something that has been like happening years. Its happening for years. Its nothing new. Also when netanyahu said that, he declared a war and the war is about to happen and like hes sending messages to people areas like people from certain areas like you. You should go you should leave. You should go to a safe place like even mosques bombed. So mosques are being bombed. So what does a safe place exactly mean in gaza . Like, we dont have any shelters. We dont have have any shelters. We dont have any have a place any like we dont have a place to escape. We have erez crossing. There the controlling. There is the one controlling it. Him declaring its war. It. So him declaring its war. We should like get to safety mode. We should go to shelters, we should leave. Like, what should we exactly . Should we do exactly . Okay. Plestia were going to leave it there. Thank you very much indeed forjoining i much indeed forjoining us. I think it must be terrifying as well to be told from the other side of the border you side of the border that, you know, get out of get out of your homes because we are going to bomb you. Were to reduce bomb you. Were going to reduce gaza to rubble. Do you gaza to rubble. But where do you go now . Yeah, if youre in that sort of situation. Yeah. So thanks very much to plestia for giving us some sort of an idea of what it must be like. Delved into the policy were more interested, i think, in what it like to be actually what it was like to be actually on receiving but we on the receiving end, but we didnt lets didnt get round to that. Lets move on. Move on. Absolutely lets move absolutely. Lets move on to domestic politics, if you like. And of course the Labour Party Conference in liverpool kicks off today and its likely to be the last, of course, before next years the last, of course, before next years expected general election. Yeah. Labour leader sir keir starmer heads to the gathering with a comfortable the with a Comfortable Lead in the polls the seismic polls after the partys seismic win, as they called it in the rutherglen by election in scotland. But what can we expect from today . There are a number of big speakers going on. In fact, i think. Think. Angela rayner zahawi 11. Angela rayner zahawi 11. Angela rayner and then formally former labour leader jeremy corbyn. Thats right. Hes going to be chairing a panel hes going to be chairing a panel, lots of , as you can panel, lots of, as you can imagine, lots of headlines in todays press. Keir starmer and this is just on the front of the observer warning his party, even though theyre doing incredibly well in the polls , hes saying well in the polls, hes saying dont get giddy over the prospect of an election win. And prospect of an election win. And you may well think that hes right to say that to the Party Faithful , because if they do get faithful, because if they do get giddy, as he puts it, they could actually maybe not get the job done. Actually maybe not get the job done. Theres a long way to go done. Theres a long way to go still. Yeah theres an interesting the sunday people interesting in the sunday people , thought a strange , i thought it was a strange place do an exclusive interview. Sir keir starmer today hes also paying also talking about paying handsome overtime to doctors and nurses. There you are. Nurses. There you are. Yes, its his £1. 5 billion plan to save the nhs. He reckons hes going to get most of that money from taxing non doms in this country. And its interesting how obviously, you know, the nhs is going to be front and centre of any labour conference, but more money into the nhs is what hes talking about. Well, is that going well before we going to work . Well before we cut liverpool, why dont we cut to liverpool, why dont we why dont we go to former ukip deputy and political deputy chair and political commentator suzanne of commentator Suzanne Evans top of the to you, suzanne. The morning to you, suzanne. Thanks joining us on thanks for joining us on breakfast. So i mean, they seem to be preparing for power. Theyre acting like there are governments in waiting, but is there still time for starmer to blow it or do you think theyve got theyve got history on their side . Right. Know , its like well, you know, its like they always say a week a long they always say a week is a long time in politics. Conference can be a a Party Conference can be a very time in politics very long time in politics indeed. And certainly i think the one thing, the labour the number one thing, the labour party looking the number one thing, the labour party this looking the number one thing, the labour party this party looking the number one thing, the labour party this Party Conferenceg to do for this Party Conference is not put a foot wrong and here we are already, as youve mentioned , keir starmer, laying mentioned, keir starmer, laying out expectation actions or trying to mitigate expectations by telling excuse me , its early by telling excuse me, its early morning. The Party Faithful not to get too giddy about their success in the rutherglen and Hamilton West by election in which we will call they have just stonkingly won with the snp losing a 16 point vote share. Losing a 16 point vote share. Now this is obviously good news. If the what happened in scotland was extrapolated out for a general election, then theyd be looking at having between 40 and 50 of scotlands 57 seats and that would massively help them on their potential path to power. But as we also know by elections are not necessarily a good indicator of what would come at a general election, but as you said, martin, definitely they are a government in waiting. They are doing phenomenally well. The conservatives are doing phenomenally badly. And they will want to make sure they dont put a foot wrong at this conference and try and tick those boxes. Nhs is clearly going be a big headline. Going to be a big headline. Thats the labours first point of call for any kind of election heanng of call for any kind of election hearing or policy announcements. And sure enough theyve come out with it straight away on day one. One. One. Yes, i mean its interesting that keir starmer is saying im going to put £1. 5 billion straight into the nhs to save going to put £1. 5 billion str butt into the nhs to save going to put £1. 5 billion str but a nto the nhs to save going to put £1. 5 billion str but a lot the nhs to save going to put £1. 5 billion str but a lot ofe nhs to save going to put £1. 5 billion str but a lot of money to save going to put £1. 5 billion str but a lot of money issave it, but a lot of money is already spent on the nhs and it takes a very brave politician to stand up and say actually whats neededis stand up and say actually whats needed is not so much more money, but a root and Branch Reform is the labor party or a potential Labour Government the only sort of government that could actually meddle with the nhs . I think you make a very nhs . I think you make a very good point there, ann, because i think the nhs and dare i say this, perhaps its early enough in the morning to be speculative, but i think you know, the labour party probably has greater support among the pubuc has greater support among the Public Sector and among the nhs, so perhaps there ideas might be might be more acceptable. I dont know. I think ive certainly had the feeling with all the strikes that weve had recently and weve certainly had some members of the British Medical Association very much hinting that the strikes hinting at this that the strikes have less about demands to have been less about demands to make the nhs better or for bigger pay rises. But theyve also been an anti theres been a very strong anti conservative message very often there. So that might be the case. Of course, the other thing that the labour party are going to announce at this conference and rachel reeves, the shadow chancellor, always already chancellor, has always already hinted is that theyre hinted at this is that theyre going to say that they will guarantee in law that any government making significant permanent and change spends permanent tax and change spends spending will be subject to an independent forecast of the impact by the obr. This is a nod to, of course, the so called liz truss mini budget, which didnt reference the obr. The problem with that is that is the obr going to ever say theres enough money for any new policies or new ideas . And as lord frost pointed out this week, the number obe numbers, frankly, arent worth the paper theyve been written on for some time. Been written on for some time. Um, so just doing policy and doing tax and spending by the obr computer is a recipe for endless stagnation. They will endless stagnation. They will they will inevitably be working from a perspective of caution. So if labour really does hold itself, even when it comes to the nhs, will the obr say theres money available . There theres money available . There could be a dilemma here in terms of what they say their policy wants to be, but what actually theyre allowed to do because another policy might stop them. Susan thank you okay, susan evans, thank you very that update. And very much for that update. And in fact, were now crossing live to join in fact, were now crossing live to political join in fact, were now crossing live to Political Correspondentn in fact, were now crossing live to Political Correspondent , our Political Correspondent, catherine up catherine forster, who is up there in the middle the there in the middle of the action. So, catherine, weve just heard about the nhs plans more money going in there, another £1. 5 billion. Weve got corbyn rearing his head later on. Quite a mixed day ahead. What can we expect . What can we expect . Yes , well, the shadow deputy yes, well, the shadow deputy leader, ann Angela Rayner, will be kicking off with the first big speech of conference at 11 30 this morning. The shadow 11 30 this morning. The shadow chancellor, rachel reeves, speaking tomorrow. Then sir keir starmer on tuesday and i think this is the conference where hopefully we will finally get some meat on the bones of what labour would actually do in power. What they would do in government if , as the power. What they would do in government if, as the opinion polls suggest it. Keir starmer because comes our next Prime Minister in a year or sos time. Now labour are in very good form, as you would expect, from that massive by election win up in scotland the other day where there was a 20 point swing to them. But of course things are them. But of course things are quite difficult because whoever comes into power after the next election , theyre going to be election, theyre going to be facing some very difficult economic choices because put bluntly, we havent got a lot of money. Were paying 100 billion a year just on paying debt interest. So labour are wanting to be seen as sound with money. You can trust us with the economy. Were not going to economy. Were not going to frighten the horses. Were going to be very, very careful with pubuc to be very, very careful with public spending. But that means public spending. But that means that its going to be quite difficult for them to come out and make big promises. But certainly they need to give people a positive reason to choose labour as opposed to at the moment it seems that a lot of the poll lead isnt so much enthusiasm for keir starmer or laboun enthusiasm for keir starmer or labour, but really that a lot of people are very, very cross with the conservatives. So they need to change that. And also we had rishi sunak last week painting himself quite audacious given the conservatives been in government for 13 years as the change candidate. We can certainly expect sir keir starmer to say no, no, no , we starmer to say no, no, no, we are the change. So weve already had policies on the nhs announcement about more scanners, announcement of 1. 5 billion for door trying to bring down the waiting list. Weve had down the waiting list. Weve had an announcement about more Affordable Housing. I think we can expect much more. But at the same time labour wants to be a little bit careful because a year out from the general election , what they dont want election, what they dont want is the conservatives nicking their policies. Weve already their policies. Weve already seen that a couple of times. Seen that a couple of times. Labour were talking a lot about a childcare offer. A big childcare offer. The conservatives have done that wes streeting , the Shadow Health streeting, the Shadow Health secretary was saying that yeah, a ban on smoking would be a good idea and lo and behold, rishi sunak has pinched that to okay. Catherine forster , thank you catherine forster, thank you for that update from liverpool. For that update from liverpool. We join you of course throughout the rest of the show. Right. Lets have a look at some of the other stories some of the other news stories that our that are coming into our newsroom morning. Newsroom this morning. Is set to shut the and wilco is set to shut the doors of its last high street shops for the final time as the collapse of the 93 year old retailer comes to a close. The retailer comes to a close. The discount hardware and furnishings chain has been shutting its 400 uk stores over the past month after tumbling into administration in august. And that will bring to a close one of the largest high street failures in recent years, with almost all of wilcos 12,500 workers being sadly made redundant. Redundant. Sad day and a significant quantity of what is thought to be cocaine has been discovered off the coast of dorset and hampshire. The National Crime agency is investigating after a fisherman discovered holdalls containing hundreds of kilos of white powder in the sea off purbeck more washed up on a beach on the isle of wight also, and the nca say the class a drugs would have originated in south america. South america. The prince of wales has told young environmental ists they must think big and dream bigger. If we are to protect the earth. In a foreword to a childrens earthshot prize book, william said that when he was a child, some people refuse to believe Climate Change was happening. The new Childrens Book aims to inspire young people to develop their own ideas to help the earth. That ideas to help the earth. That cocaine hole absolutely extra ordinary, just washing up randomly found that its dilemma. You know. Do you sort of hand it in or what do you do with it . You hand it in. I think thats what you do. You wouldnt get much but you wouldnt get much more for it, more than a thank you for it, would course not. But would you . Of course not. But that have been so that would have been worth so much market. Much on the market. Wow. That movie . Whats that movie . Is it whisky you remember whisky galore . Do you remember that . Movie from that . Whisky galore movie from back in day where the whisky that . Whisky galore movie from bac washed . Iay where the whisky that . Whisky galore movie from bac washed . Itswhere the whisky that . Whisky galore movie from bac washed . Its basically whisky that . Whisky galore movie from bac washed . Its basically that. Ky got washed . Its basically that. Of it is. Its that sort of thing. Mean, extraordinary thing. I mean, extraordinary things wash up on our things do wash up on our coastlines. Remember coastlines. Do you remember that once there container that coastlines. Do you remember that once ioffe container that coastlines. Do you remember that once ioffe ship container that coastlines. Do you remember that onceioffe ship containewashed came off a ship and then washed up this on the up and i think on this on the same full of lego. Same coast full of lego. Yeah. Theres rubber and theres one of rubber ducks as well. Thats right. Oh thats right. Oh thats right. Floated around that was floated around on the thousands and the ocean like thousands and thousands once word got that thousands once word got out that things ducks things like these rubber ducks and of and particularly it was full of little wasnt just little lego men, it wasnt just ordinary it was ordinary lego bricks, it was little. Little lego men. Got out, and once word got out, children sworn going to children were sworn going to those to pick the those beaches to pick up the little became little lego men. That became very of course, very collectable. And of course, it how many it does remind you how many containers are just containers there are just floating around in our that floating around in our sea that have container ships have fallen off container ships and cause real problem and cause a real problem problem, real hazards to other shipping. But fascinating when that sort of thing does happen. Unexpected haul for these fishermen on that day, thats for absolutely. Yeah, absolutely. Still to come, reality show big brother will be back on our screens tonight. But whats changed in the five years since it last on our screens . It was last on our screens . Well discuss in that next with stephanie. This is gb news welcome back. Its 724. Youre watching and listen to breakfast with and martin. Yeah. With anne and martin. Yeah. And Stephanie Bush is here with all of the latest showbiz news. Lovely to you. Hi. We news. Lovely to see you. Hi. We cannot believe i thought cannot believe that i thought big was dead. Big brother was dead. Yeah, it was. Yeah, it was. Its revived and its its being revived and its resurrected from dead. Resurrected from the dead. Five later, 2018, five years later, 2018, dwindling figures for big brother. It lost its spark. It brother. It lost its spark. It lost its magic. People just werent impressed with it anymore. It had a lot of controversy the past. Race controversy in the past. Race ism, sexism, all that stuff. Yeah but it wouldnt be big brother without bit of brother without a bit of control. A bit of control. We like a bit of controversy when comes to controversy when it comes to reality show, but its a reality tv show, but its a different age. And different day and age. And tonight going to see 16 tonight were going to see 16 new who will be new housemates who will be entering big brother house. Entering the big brother house. But as you can imagine, weve had a lot with reality tv shows in terms the landscape where in terms of the landscape where weve had former people say, you know, their Mental Health have been , people have been been affected, people have been cancelled there are cancelled because there are things on social things theyve put on social media. Itv have gone media. So now itv have gone above and beyond. So these housemates, theyve had respect and inclusion training. So this means that theyre going to know the right things to say on air and how not to offend people. Theyre going to have a social media blackout. So it means media blackout. So it means dunng media blackout. So it means during thing, during the whole thing, their family their family cannot post on their social media accounts. Itv have gone through all their accounts. So if theyve said anything racist, sexist , they wouldnt be racist, sexist, they wouldnt be on the show. Its not interesting. Interesting. Even their family wont be able say anything on social media. Total social media blackout until out of the show. Until theyre out of the show. And through and also theyve gone through psychological and medical assessments well that i can assessments as well that i can understand the duty of care and all the rest of it. But a politically correct big brother is a bit like an alcohol free beer, isnt it . Well yeah, but it wont happen. I mean, the itv find it hard because its being made by itv. It is being made by itv, wasnt it started on channel 4, started on channel 4 last time. It was on screens. Was on it was on screens. It was on channel five. And so now. Now its itv. Obviously feel so they obviously feel theres still you know, its still legs. Still got legs. Yeah, i say. Yeah, i say. And but but theyve always said the very beginning said from the very beginning that, know, have that, you know, we have psychological all psychological training and all the of it. Do they actually i youve been on it. Youve been on it. Yeah, i was on the celebrity version of this pronoun training. No, absolutely nothing. Absolutely nothing at all. It was rush. It was rush. It was itv. It was rush. It was itv. I it was rush. It was itv. I was just thrown it was itv. I was just thrown to the wolves, basically. But to the wolves, basically. But mind you, that really was before the day of huge social media. Yes. And thats the thing. And i think its so easy in itv need to cover their back now because youve had x factor, youve had love island , where x factor love island, where x factor contestants have come out and accused like different Production Companies of not looking after them. Love islands. Seen people islands. Weve seen people whove died by suicide. So it is whove died by suicide. So it is a big thing with these stars who are to go on because their are about to go on because their lives going to change lives are going to change forever. To forever. Theyre going to have that scrutiny and theyre that public scrutiny and theyre going be watched 24 hours a going to be watched 24 hours a day. Now, the star of the show for me geordie bloke in now, the star of the show for me big geordie bloke in now, the star of the show for me big brazils. Geordie bloke in the big brazils. Is he on it . No no. Is he on it . No no. Theyve got rid of him. This i theyve got to i dont know who theyve got to be the voiceovers, be doing the voiceovers, but he was much of the big was very much a part of the big brother thing, the best so brother thing, the best bit. So i theyve kind missed i think theyve kind of missed a trick there. And they i think theyve kind of missed a trick ii ere. And they i think theyve kind of missed a trick ii went and they i think theyve kind of missed a trick ii went on and they i think theyve kind of missed a trick ii went on it, and they i think theyve kind of missed a trick ii went on it, wed they i think theyve kind of missed a trick ii went on it, we hadzy i think theyve kind of missed a trick ii went on it, we had to the when i went on it, we had to the first task we had to do was build beds. Build our own beds. Oh, my god. Oh, my god. Were just there was a huge we were just there was a huge flat you know, things an flat pack. You know, things an ikea. Ikea. Yeah. Yeah. And we had to build our own beds. But by the look of it, this house, i mean, they look very proper. Lavish is given a whole a lavish is given a whole revamp. In elstree revamp. So its not in elstree studios its actually studios anymore. Its actually in and theyve in west london, and theyve called garden studios. So called it the garden studios. So i think they will be living in comfort , but theyre going comfort, but theyre still going to diary room to be things like the diary room where they talk about their problems. As see, weve got as you see, weve got pictures screen. If you cant as you see, weve got pictthem screen. If you cant as you see, weve got pictthem at;creen. If you cant as you see, weve got pictthem at home, if you cant as you see, weve got pictthem at home, itsou cant as you see, weve got pictthem at home, itsouveryt as you see, weve got pictthem at home, itsouvery as see them at home, its a very as anne said, a very lavish. It looks really Free Standing bath anne said, a very lavish. It looa; really Free Standing bath anne said, a very lavish. It looa raised Free Standing bath anne said, a very lavish. It looa raised plinth. Anding bath on a raised plinth. Im a bit worried about yeah, im a bit worried about there bath and also there being a free bath and also there being a free bath and also there viewing that there being a free bath and also there watch ing that there being a free bath and also there watch each that there being a free bath and also there watch each otherrt there being a free bath and also there watch each other having people watch each other having a bath. Yes. And apparently they are not going hidden. Theres going to be hidden. Theres going to be hidden. Theres going no privacy. Theres going to be no privacy. Theres cameras even from going to be no privacy. Theres carr outside. Even from going to be no privacy. Theres carroutside. So, even from going to be no privacy. Theres carroutside. So, no, even from going to be no privacy. Theres carroutside. So, no, noten from going to be no privacy. Theres carroutside. So, no, not in from going to be no privacy. Theres carroutside. So, no, not in the1 the outside. So, no, not in the loos, in the loos. Think loos, not in the loos. I think theyll have that bit of privacy, they are privacy, but i think they are going to be watched. Yeah, quite going to be watched. Yeah, quite funny. Its all about the funny. But its all about the money when it comes to big brother. Wins, brother. So whoever wins, theres of them to theres a potential of them to walk away between 50,000 and £100,000. Well, thats right. I mean, in my day you did the celebrity version. You did it for charity. So we werent paid anything in recent years, celebrities have been enormous amounts, been paid enormous amounts, havent i mean, this havent they . But i mean, this makes somebody makes or breaks somebody if theyre trying to make their career there been lots career. And there have been lots of long standing careers. Alison hammond, she was on big brother. She. Yeah she big brother. Now she. Yeah she came big brother josie came out of big brother josie gibson. So does make star gibson. So it does make star cars. But again, it can also land people into trouble. If you think about the late jade goody, there was that big racism round which reve early affected her. I dont know if she did intend those comments, but it did leave a black mark on her. But now jade goodys son is carrying on the legacy. But now jade goodys son is car|yes, on the legacy. But now jade goodys son is car|yes, strictly legacy. But now jade goodys son is car|yes, strictly so. Acy. Yes, strictly so. Yes, strictly so. The name hasnt come back. In terms of the set itself, it looks, as you said, quite swanky. It looks a sort of swanky. It looks like a sort of gansh swanky. It looks like a sort of garish kind of las vegas hotel. Now going have good now theyre going have a good time there. Now theyre going have a good tim they here. Now theyre going have a good tim they are. Now theyre going have a good tim they are. And i think they are. And i think itv have with big have to make their mark with big brother cant have brother now so they cant have something channel something similar as channel 4 did or channel five did. Its going presented aj going to be presented by aj odudu so even odudu and will bear. So even with presenting line with the presenting line up, its different. Its going to be different. Do you think itll be a hit or resurrect something do you think itll be a hit or past resurrect something do you think itll be a hit or past its zsurrect something do you think itll be a hit or past its sellect something do you think itll be a hit or past its sell by something do you think itll be a hit or past its sell by date . hing thats past its sell by date . Think when it i think i think when it i think people will be curious about it. So i think for the first few episodes they will get the ratings. But episodes they will get the ratings. But again, it all depends on the contestants. As depends on the contestants. As theyve got theyve said, theyve got contestants from all walks of life. Will cast the life. They will have cast the contestants carefully. Contestants very carefully. Yeah, all the yeah, so its all about the chemistry about the chemistry and all about the entertainment and a bit of scandal entertainment and a bit of sca yes, needs to be a bit yes, there needs to be a bit of romance, a of of romance, a bit of naughtiness, there . Naughtiness, doesnt there . Breaking down all someone breaking down all that stuff. Hopefully give them hopefully theyll give them plenty wine because plenty of cheap wine because thats fun starts. You thats when the fun starts. You know, time. Thats when the fun starts. You kno is time. Thats when the fun starts. You kno is that time. Thats when the fun starts. You knois that right . Time. Thats when the fun starts. You kno is that right . Well me. Thats when the fun starts. You knois that right . Well in . Thats when the fun starts. You knois that right . Well in my is that right . Well in my day, to earn the wine. Day, you had to earn the wine. I mean, that was the trouble. Oh, you werent given it oh, yeah. You werent given it for it. You for free. If you want it. You had your food with some for free. If you want it. You had of your food with some for free. If you want it. You had of stupid ur food with some for free. If you want it. You had of stupid task. Od with some sort of stupid task. That sounds a gosh, that sounds like im a celebrity. Me out. Celebrity. Get me out. Absolutely. Absolutely. The pressure was horrible absolutely. Because essure was horrible absolutely. Because ifsure was horrible absolutely. Because if you was horrible absolutely. Because if you didntjrrible then. Because if you didnt do very your you very well in your task, you didnt booze for didnt earn wine or booze for anyone else in the house. So do you have any regrets now . Yes. I should never have done it. It was awful. It was it was it. It was awful. It was it was awful. But i. I think this will be a success. You do . I think there is a market for it. Again. There is. There is. Well, especially as it gets to young people want to watch stuff and its not stuff like that. And its not love its something love island. Its something different. Do different. And people really do support different. What do find surprising is what i do find surprising is that of that this this blackout of social media. Yeah. Because i would have yeah. Because i would have thought thats what would make it nowadays. No , i think social is no, i think social media is such a heated place now and its it can be put the wrong thing there. Its over. Its over. Its over. I think theyre bothered about peoples Mental Health inside there when they get trolled. So yeah, from the outside its a huge issue and they need to be prepared for that. Yeah, great stuff, all yeah, great stuff, steph. All right. Guys. Right. Thanks, guys. Fascinating. Youre looking fonnard. What you fonnard. Let us know what you think. Watch well think. Youll like and i showbiz story , corries sattaur showbiz story, corries sattaur upsets visitors by going cashless. Yeah, its more than a showbiz story, isnt it, really . Its about. Its about the Cashless Society, which were all kind of railing against, to be honest, because it makes life so difficult for people who dont cards or want dont have cards or dont want to use their for every to use their card for every little apparently little purchase. And apparently the coronation street tour, which is a tour where you can go around set, used work which is a tour where you can go ar granada set, used work which is a tour where you can go ar granada and used work which is a tour where you can go ar granada and theyve work which is a tour where you can go ar granada and theyve always at granada and theyve always run very run this tour and its very popular and it is really worth going and seeing the kind of behind scenes of they behind the scenes of how they make coronation street. But apart only now the tour itself is £35. But you cant buy anything when youre there from anything when youre there from a cup of tea to souvenirs unless youve got a card. Theyre youve got a card. Theyre banning cash thats naughty banning all cash thats naughty. And payment choice. And the Payment Choice Alliance is person. Ron del nievo has said, i dont know how he knows this, but he says that ena sharples will be raging from her. She would. Ive had to her. She would. Ive had to explain to tom who ena sharples is, so ive said shes a standard kind of northern battleaxe in a hairnet. So hes got the kind of imagery there. But yeah, but i presume ena sharples, would. And sharples, i probably would. And actually team of actually maybe, maybe a team of battleaxes is what we need to defeat this kind of scourge of society. I havent been on one of these doors. You have . Yeah. Whats demographic . Do you whats the demographic . Do you get people get quite a few older people that have smartphones . That might not have smartphones . I think i i think you would. I think i think exactly think its exactly true. Actually. The kind actually. I think the kind of people would people who would go on a coronation street probably coronation street tour probably would be. I mean, theres all sorts, obviously, but you probably lot probably would get quite a lot of pensionable age and of people of pensionable age and people, just dont people, you know, who just dont have kind dont have those kind of and dont even you have card, you even if you have a card, do you want cup of tea or want to pay for a cup of tea or a bottle of water on your card . I mean, statement is just i mean, your statement is just like long when you do like mine as long when you do that although that kind of thing. Although its track of its very hard to keep track of what i dont like what youre doing, i dont like looking statement looking at my Bank Statement because just because its just its just pub, pub, nice potted history. Its a nice potted history. Its a nice potted history. Thats just me. But. Yeah, thats just me. But. But tom, on a serious point, you know, of erosion know, this this kind of erosion of is gathering apace. And of cash is gathering apace. And if its reaching places as far flung as the corrie sets or its becoming something that a lot of people are feeling quite cross about. Oh, definitely. Think one of those and i think its one of those things just because, say, things where just because, say, the vast majority of people, at least, of, you least, theyre kind of, you know, kind know, most people can kind of bump can bump along with this. They can adapt whatever. Theres always going proportion going to be that proportion of the its the population who cant. Its like discussion about like a similar discussion about ticket train ticket offices at train stations, that. Just stations, things like that. Just because straightfonnard in because its straightfonnard in theory doesnt mean its straightfonnard practise straightfonnard in practise particularly youre little particularly if youre a little bit if you bit older, particularly if you work with cash day to day. Theres of things theres all sorts of things which thought which just dont get thought about in a about when someone in a boardroom somewhere dreams up some we go some great idea that we can go cashless. It doesnt. Think its keeping cashless. It doesnt. simple, think its keeping cashless. It doesnt. simple, dont1ink its keeping cashless. It doesnt. simple, dont they . s keeping cashless. It doesnt. simple, dont they . Theylping cashless. It doesnt. simtheyrent they . Theylping cashless. It doesnt. simtheyre horrendous. Eylping cashless. It doesnt. simtheyre horrendous. If ping think theyre horrendous. If weve tills weve got to have cash tills and have change things have to give change and things like thats bother. Like that, thats the bother. They dont want that theory. Its so simple. All its all so simple. Its all so something goes down. Absolutely nothing worth aukus how is that simple . How is that simple . I wouldnt fancy 25 ena sharples desperate for a cup of tea. You know, he couldnt pay. You know, he couldnt pay. You know, he couldnt pay. No. That is what we no, no. But that is what we should should. Should should do. We should. We should put heads. Should do. We should. We should puti heads. Should do. We should. We should puti youveis. Heard of i bet youve never heard of sharples, you . I bet youve never heard of shetoes, you . I bet youve never heard of she to. Es, yto . I bet youve never heard of shetoes, yto google it. To have that to google it. To have that to google it. Who was the original big impression in the green room when sharples and minnie caldwell,. Hilda caldwell, hilda ogden. Hilda ogden . Yes. Yeah. Eddie yates. Yeah. Eddie yates. I mean, elsie tanner was the most glamorous version of a battleaxe. Absolutely. Yeah. But yeah, golden days dont make soaps like that anymore, do they . I dont know. I dont know. I dont know. I mean, curry still has quite, quite strong women characters imagine its characters that i imagine its great because you actually great fun because you actually go street, dont you . And you can your picture you . Anor ou can your picture you . Anor youran your picture you . Anor your selfie your picture you . Anor your selfie taken picture taken or your selfie taken outside the rovers. It it was on the one side it was it was on the one side of the of the manchester ship canal. Now its on the other because media because its gone to media city. So the original so its not the original original that you would go but it the part. But it it still looks the part. But it but it is its obviously been recreated with recreated very faithfully with cobbles. Cobbles. E cobbles. A beer in the can you buy a beer in the quarry. Quarry bar. No, no, no. Its a set. Its not but go but if not real. But if you go but if you to the harry potter one, you go to the harry potter one, you go to the harry potter one, you butterbeer. You can you can buy butterbeer. You can buy butterbeer, because my husband the husband saved the cobbles in the 40th anniversary episode. 40th anniversary live episode. Oh, noddy holder was the first celebrity guest they had starring in corrie, and his role was to arrive at the last minute with a a piece of paper. With a with a piece of paper. I dont know what piece of dont know what the piece of paper was, but something that he could and it saved could wave about and it saved the they the cobbles because they were going to be ripped up. Wow. So noddy the coronation. Oh, wonderful story. Oh, thats wonderful story. Where are they now . Well , no, theyre. Well, no, theyre. Well, no, theyre. Theyre still there. Theyre still there. Theyre still there. Theyre still there. They were going to pull them up put tarmac down instead. Up and put tarmac down instead. Yeah. One. Up and put tarmac down instead. Not1. One. Up and put tarmac down instead. Not sweet, one. Up and put tarmac down instead. Not sweet, tom. The sunday people. A strange place i felt for starmer give his for keir starmer to give his exclusive opening of for keir starmer to give his excllabour opening of for keir starmer to give his excllabour Party Opening of for keir starmer to give his exclLabour Party Conference. Of for keir starmer to give his exclLabour Party Conference. But the Labour Party Conference. But an interesting thats an interesting one on thats come into its in the mail begum pardon the theyre having a pop and assault on drivers. This is the theory see that Angela Rayner said that ulez schemes wont just be in rayner said that ulez schemes wontjust be in london, they wont just be in london, they will go to every town across britain. Whats the latest on this . So this story is pointing out that Labours National Policy Forum is a proposal before it in the either conference which is looking at essentially emulating what wales has started to introduce. Obviously theyve introduced their 20 mile per hour also theyve introduced their 20 mile per hour themselveslso theyve introduced their 20 mile per hour themselves powers ve given themselves powers which could up questions around could open up questions around kind charging and all kind of road charging and all these different sorts of zones. Obviously drakeford very obviously Mark Drakeford is very into down on drivers into clamping down on drivers taking money away even from new road projects. Now this is a little bit speculative insofar as its a proposal which makes reference to what wales are doing, does raise that doing, but it does raise that question, is whilst after question, which is whilst after the uxbridge by election where labour kind of snatched labour famously kind of snatched defeat from jaws victory defeat from the jaws of victory on the ulez, it on the basis of the ulez, it seems than anything seems more than anything else theyre difficult theyre in this difficult position a lot their position because a lot of their other prominent politicians, particularly in devolved assemblies and elsewhere around the are very in favour the country, are very in favour of kinds of schemes. Keir of these kinds of schemes. Keir starmer trying to starmer at best is trying to look both way on this issue as he likes try on many he likes to try to do on many issues, some point issues, but at some point theyre to have to take a theyre going to have to take a position to position and its quite clear to me theyre probably going me that theyre probably going to more drawn towards to be more drawn towards pleasing people the kind pleasing people in in the kind of metropolitan where of metropolitan centres where a lot vote as as lot of their vote is, as well as their politicians and their own politicians and representatives just trying representatives and just trying to make hope that dont to make hope that people dont nofice to make hope that people dont notice going to notice. But this is going to become issue for become such a big issue for people, you say, people, particularly as you say, it not from it spreads out not just from london country. London but around the country. Heres yeah, heres heres susan. Theyre sorry no, theyre tweeting away. Sorry no, because you completely get the fact that its fine and well to like put transport policies across. If youre youre a across. If youre if youre a cyclist of london. Cyclist in zone one of london. But meanwhile in the real world, in world, where you in the real world, where you live, depend on car. Live, you depend on your car. And i think and the labour party, i think just had so many positions just have had so many positions on to. Stand on where theyre going to. Stand on where theyre going to. Stand on ulez schemes. What do we believe now . Well we cant believe now . Well we cant believe anything. And the yeah, particularly the you know, hes looking the line, you know, hes looking both you the line, you know, hes looking both the, you the line, you know, hes looking both the, the you the line, you know, hes looking both the, the many you the line, you know, hes looking both the, the many faces you the line, you know, hes looking both the, the many faces ofou the line, you know, hes looking both the, the many faces of keir know the, the many faces of keir starmer. He can look in 360 direction time. Direction most of the time. I think thats because think because thats because he has to has no idea which way to jump to make, best kind of make, to make the best kind of idea and the he to idea and the way he ought to jump idea and the way he ought to jump anything. Obviously is jump on anything. Obviously is just think and jump on anything. Obviously is jussay think and jump on anything. Obviously is jussay what think and jump on anything. Obviously is jussay what you think and jump on anything. Obviously is jussay what you want hink and jump on anything. Obviously is jussay what you want t01k and jump on anything. Obviously is jussay what you want to domd jump on anything. Obviously is jussay what you want to do and to say what you want to do and to say what you want to do and to say what principles are. To say what you want to do and to s on what principles are. To say what you want to do and to s on this, principles are. To say what you want to do and to son this, i principles are. To say what you want to do and to son this, i pthinkles are. But on this, i just think theyve discovered, havent they, theres a new way to squeeze motorists more squeeze the motorists for more money theyve realised money once theyve realised how much they can why is much money they can make. Why is anyone stop doing anyone ever going to stop doing that . Thats a real that . Thats thats a real dangen that . Thats thats a real danger. Were now. That . Thats thats a real dange billion. Now. £1 billion. £1 billion. Sadiq khan is taken every yearin sadiq khan is taken every year in london and think a lot year in london and i think a lot of eyeing that of politicians are eyeing that and lips. And licking their lips. Last week as with somebody last week who worked in boris who actually worked in Boris Johnsons office when he was a labour mayor and when he was london mayor of london, london mayor, not labour mayor. And he london mayor of london, london mayttheres abour mayor. And he london mayor of london, london mayttheres no jur mayor. And he london mayor of london, london mayttheres no way iayor. And he london mayor of london, london mayttheres no way they . And he london mayor of london, london mayttheres no way they would le said theres no way they would have in what they what have brought in what they what they they they brought in because they understand keeping london understand that keeping london in moving or any city in particular moving or any city moving really the best way to moving is really the best way to actually not have congestion and to not have so much toxic air and what actually is happening now is just defeating all of that. Okay, lets look very quickly. Look, susan, at the idea that labouris look, susan, at the idea that labour is trying to think whether its possible to bring back student grants. Back student grants. Well, yes, which i would be really, really pleased about because ive always thought that charging students to go to charging student s to go to university is, is a is a terrible idea. But can we get lets have a little, little poll down. What do you think the labour thing how do you think labour thing how do you think labour will fund. Well theyve already taxed non doms to put 1. 5 billion back into the nhs. Into the n hs. Into the nhs. Oh no, theyre just going to charge students charge the richest students parents so. Parents more so. So their parents. So their parents. Well, richer students will have to pay more. So it says its actually going to hit the middle class graduates. So theyre expect that if theyre going to expect that if you they if youve got a you if they if youve got a ceiling on where your parents because its all about what your parents say and isnt it you were means tested for were always means tested for kind of a grant in the old days. Seems ridiculous. That just seems ridiculous. That just seems ridiculous. Yeah. Yeah. Well, levying a larger student shouldnt be that biased. But. But look what im saying biased. i but. But look what im saying biased. i had but look what im saying biased. i had aut look what im saying biased. i had a fullnok what im saying biased. i had a full grant. At im saying biased. i had a full grant. I im saying biased. i had a full grant. I cameaying is i had a full grant. I came from a very working class background. In fact, i got background. In fact, i got a National Coal board grant on top of my full grant. I could never have afforded to go University Without ive repaid have afforded to go university withwmany, ive repaid have afforded to go university withwmany, many ive repaid have afforded to go university withwmany, many times e repaid have afforded to go university withwmany, many times e rtaxid that many, many times in tax over years. For the idea that many, many times in tax ov grants years. For the idea that many, many times in tax ov grants forrs. For the idea that many, many times in tax ov grants for the for the idea that many, many times in tax ov grants for the poorer he idea of grants for the poorer students to have equality of grants always means tested. They were they were i didnt get a full grant and i was actually in a single parent family at the time. And there was no way we met it. Met it financially. We it. We met it financially. We i should have got a full grant, but i a journalism course but i did a journalism course and they said that was actually and they said that was actually a vocational thing only a vocational thing that only rich kind of did, which rich people kind of did, which i could never understand. So they could never understand. So they said, because if you said, oh, because if you if youre journalism, then said, oh, because if you if youmust journalism, then said, oh, because if you if youmust be journalism, then said, oh, because if you if youmust be able urnalism, then said, oh, because if you if youmust be able toralism, then said, oh, because if you if youmust be able to afford then said, oh, because if you if youmust be able to afford it. En you must be able to afford it. So i did a 75 so i just went to i did a 75 grant and lived it. So i just went to i did a 75 grant and lived it. I didnt grant and lived on it. I didnt get anything. My parents meant grant and lived on it. I didnt get an ithing. My parents meant grant and lived on it. I didnt get an it up. My parents meant grant and lived on it. I didnt get an it up. Theyparents meant grant and lived on it. I didnt get an it up. They didnt, meant grant and lived on it. I didnt get an it up. They didnt, butant to top it up. They didnt, but thats how it was the old thats how it was in the old days. I still think a days. But i still think thats a better what weve better system than what weve got just seems to tom, but it just seems to me, tom, that a good idea in that theres half a good idea in this, is the labour this, and that is the labour party should be the party of equality opportunity. Party should be the party of eqlitity opportunity. Party should be the party of eqlit shouldpportunity. Party should be the party of eqlit shouldpportunparty the it should be the party of the working it should be working classes. It should be helping but then helping the poorest. But then they it by taxing rich they flip it by taxing rich students again. It just it just, i think, sends out two messages. Yeah, no, it does. And i think its difficult as well because labour to have because labour are going to have such relationship with such a weird relationship with the Higher Education the question of Higher Education and because theyve the question of Higher Education and us because theyve the question of Higher Education and us into because theyve the question of Higher Education and us into this because theyve the question of Higher Education and us into this mess1se theyve the question of Higher Education and us into this mess by theyve the question of Higher Education and us into this mess by vastlye got us into this mess by vastly expanding universities. Correct by expanding universities. Correct by this 50 target, by completely neglecting vocational skills , you then its got into skills, you then its got into a situation where even the people who end up particularly feel who do end up particularly feel for bright working for the kind of bright working class who up at class kids who end up at university find that the university now to find that the degree that got worth degree that theyve got is worth so would have so much less than it would have been early. And then been previous early. And then also the working class also for the working class kids who whose talents lie elsewhere desperately forms of desperately need more forms of vocational arent Vocational Training and arent getting so nice see getting it. So its nice to see that labour reopening this that labour are reopening this question, but not in this muddled they seem know. I mean, putting up to i mean, putting it up to something in excess £20,000 something in excess of £20,000 and is any job and then how on earth is any job that why theres no that you get why theres no correlation. Now i dont think between university between going to university and what anyway. What kind of job you get anyway. I absolutely been i think thats absolutely been smashed. Too smashed. And it is because too many going and it has many people are going and it has devalued completely while devalued it completely while theyre nose theyre paying through the nose. Rather than rather than this rather than rather than this wouldnt idea to wouldnt it be a better idea to just support just throw their support completely the idea of completely behind the idea of more and more apprenticeships , more and more apprenticeships, apprenticeships that really mean something and that you something and that give you a job . At of the day . Job . At the end of the day . Talking interesting jobs, talking of interesting jobs, weve been we were talking about an hour werent we, about an hour ago, werent we, about the that its 50 years ago the fact that its 50 years ago to since the first to the day since the first commercial station started commercial Radio Station started in this country and it was lbc and since then, i think the next day after lbc opened up because they were the first ones to get a proper commercial licence in this country. And then it was this country. And then it was Capital Radio the next day. So to sort of help us celebrate that, why dont we talk to roger day now . Roger is a famous radio broadcaster , has been well broadcaster, has been well throughout his career , started throughout his career, started on radio. Caroline i think certainly in offshore radio, became a key pioneer in commercial radio in this country. Then went on to do lots of bbc stuff. I mean , hes been of bbc stuff. I mean, hes been all over the place, but hopefully he can join us now. Yes, there you are. Yes. Hello, roger. Yes ive had more stations on british rail , is had more stations on british rail, is answer to had more stations on british rail , is answer to that . Rail, is the answer to that . Yes. Oh, yes. Oh, yes. Be quite easy to well, thatd be quite easy to do i right . Do nowadays. Yeah so am i right . You caroline , then . You started on caroline, then . Well, was a small station well, it was a small station before that called radio england, then to on england, then got to on caroline, which was the big start of course that caroline, which was the big stan so of course that caroline, which was the big stan so very of course that caroline, which was the big stanso very popular course that caroline, which was the big stanso very popular and se that caroline, which was the big stanso very popular and we hat caroline, which was the big stanso very popular and we hoped was so very popular and we hoped we were paving for land we were paving the way for land based commercial radio. Yeah it took a while to happen. It did happen, didnt it . It did happen, didnt it . 50 years ago today you went actually on lbc at the beginning were, you know , i wasnt. Were, you know, i wasnt. No, because im just a pop jockey. Ive got a serious journalist like you people. Um, journalist like you people. Um, and Capital Radio turned me down for the job. I was, i was up so upset because id just been voted a top ten disc jockeys and i thought without me, you wouldnt have a blooming licence. And i was very annoyed about it. So and i was very disappointed with the early days of, of well they called it independent local radio, funded by advertising. They didnt call it commercial radio. And i got into trouble with the iba, who were very strict for calling it commercial radio. But of course there were a lot of restrictions in days. You could only in those days. You could only play in those days. You could only play records for nine hours a day, had fill up with day, had to fill it up with chats and live music. It was a complete and also so the local butcher owned stations, you know, a bit like football, like Manchester United was run by a butcher and now theyre all run by multi billionaires. So for like radio has changed considerably over the years. But eventually we got going and i started at piccadilly in manchester. Voice one on air, yeah, yeah. Um, and that was yeah, yeah. Um, and that was such a fabulous station because i loved being in manchester. Its a superb place, but we had fun up there. And philip birch , fun up there. And philip birch, who ran it, also ran the offshore station radio london, big l so it was like a pirate onshore, really. And we were very naughty boys because were in manchester. There was no internet in those days. So the in london had no idea what we were doing, but it was a media revolution because of course most of us until that point had been weaned on the bbc, which, you to me as a youth felt you know, to me as a youth felt quite starchy. Felt quite controlled , it felt quite controlled, felt a bit dull, to be honest. So radio along so commercial radio came along and made it fresh, zingy and just made it fresh, zingy and just made it fresh, zingy and a bit wacky, a little and a little bit wacky, a little bit anarchic. You know bit anarchic. You didnt know what going to get. And what youre going to get. And that was half the fun. Oh, did really stupid oh, we did really stupid things up there. I did a marathon for about three marathon on air for about three days and we did stupid things. We were always going out. We used to broadcast live from the football grounds. We were always doing broadcast. We just doing outside broadcast. We just related to the local population and of course in manchester, you know, they they hated anything coming from london, really. Although im a southern jesse, they took to me. I was a naturalised northerner they naturalised northerner and they they loved what we did. And they used to call radio used to call us radio manchester, a bit manchester, which is a bit upsetting that the upsetting because that was the bbc yeah, thats right. Bbc stage. Yeah, thats right. You were. Piccadilly is no, you were. Piccadilly is one the most famous one of the most famous ever. Yeah. Youre still it as yeah. Youre still at it as well, boom well, though. Youre on boom radio. Radio now. I the Talent Police i know the Talent Police havent up ive been havent caught up yet. Ive been getting away with it since 1966. And yeah , boom, radio came along and yeah, boom, radio came along and a bit like gb news. Were broadcasting to people who felt unrepresented, you know , that unrepresented, you know, that there isnt anything speaking for us because i always look at you guys on a sunday morning. I cant believe im actually on this programme. Oh, brilliant. And because i love it and so yes, the old people, you know, the baby boomers have been ignored. So were waiting for them. And its going ever so them. And its going ever so well because radio two has gone younger and playing rap music even, and lost ken bruce even, and theyve lost ken bruce and lost a lot of listeners. And were benefiting from that. Weve david hamilton, weve got david hamilton, the first ive been first time ive been on a station not oldest i ill tell you what, though, youre both doing great and you both sound incredibly young. Its lovely to talk to you. Thank you much for joining thank you so much for joining us. An absolute pleasure us. Its an absolute pleasure and privilege to know that you you watch time to time, you watch us from time to time, too. Yeah super curry last too. Yeah super had a curry last night by the way. Oh, im very to hear it. Oh, im very glad to hear it. Oh, im very glad to hear it. Make sure you have for breakfast. Thats the breakfast of thats of champions. Apparently. Thats what noddy holder has. Susans just what noddy holder has. Susans jusiyeah, lovely to talk , martin. Like you, my dad was a miner, so we come from similar backgrounds. Good lad. Good lad. Cheers. Thanks, roger. Always a pleasure. Good stuff. Thank you very much indeed. Yeah. So its lbc much indeed. Yeah. So its lbc that 50 years ago today. That started 50 years ago today. David jessel was the guy who presented the morning show from 6 9. And then at 9 00 there 6 to 9. And then at 9 00 there was a show that started started called two in the morning , and called two in the morning, and the two were paul callan and janet street porter. Yeah shes still going strong. Shes still going strong. Yeah, its a its an interesting point. All this coming back to panel now. Coming back to the panel now. Sues i used to really like commercial radio when was commercial radio when i was a kid felt, kid because itjust felt, um, i didnt to hear i heard didnt like to hear i heard people that sounded like me for the first time, not necessarily the first time, not necessarily the pronunciation kind the received pronunciation kind of that i the bbc was a bit posh, wasnt it, in those days, but also commercial radio also i think commercial radio now a huge opportunity now must have a huge opportunity again have again because the bbc have obviously so much obviously rolled back so much now on their local radio programming. Theyre closing so many theyre closing down so many different aspects of different kind of aspects of that, but actually maybe theres more for commercial more opportunity for commercial radio than there ever was. And radio than there ever was. And also to see somebody also how good to see somebody like him who at 78 like like like him who at 78 still broadcasting. Yes. Because why not . Youve got every link in. He knew that we would be talking about curry. He knew how to kind of get all the theres nothing wrong with these skills as you yeah and i do think as you say. Yeah and i do think as you say. Yeah and i do think a lot of places do kind of come away and get rid of away from that and get rid of people too early people far too early when theyre people far too early when the thats great and thats a great point. And boom its like going back boom, its a bit like going back to thing. Its like to the cash thing. Its like theres theres market theres a theres a huge market of appreciate of older people that appreciate stuff direct and they dont want listen to rap music. They want listen to rap music. They want stuff for stuff that delivers for them. Booms filled a gb news has booms filled a slot. Gb news has filled thats been filled a slot thats been called quick im all for quick and nimble. Im all for it, especially the bbc it, and especially the bbc forgets who its audience in forgets who its audience is in large part people who are large part the people who are listening in real time, large part the people who are listtpeople in real time, large part the people who are listtpeople who in real time, large part the people who are listtpeople who are real time, large part the people who are listtpeople who are watchinge, the people who are watching broadcast skews the people who are watching broadca older skews the people who are watching broadca older because ews the people who are watching broadcaolder because of s the people who are watching broadcaolder because of the heavily older because of the fact we know. Fact that we all know. You would terms but you would think in terms of terms of of the programming, in terms of some people theyre some of the people theyre selecting, sometimes that everyone old. Yeah, everyone is a 21 year old. Yeah, yeah. Overgrown student effectively , thats how theyre effectively, thats how theyre accessing. Theres loads of but theyve wrong accessing. Theres loads of but theyve because nrong accessing. Theres loads of but theyve because youre 21 year actually, because youre 21 year old, students arent old, overgrown students arent listening ordinary old listening to ordinary Old Fashioned radio or youtube. Theyre watching on their on their device. Theyre not. They know what they want. Its like an in joke in our house. That one of the adverts was because it was so parochial and local to dad and local was come to our dad for chops , which is like a for your chops, which is like a real local radio thing. And we say the time when its, say that all the time when its, when is kind a when something is kind of like a bit , kind of when something is kind of like a bit, kind of like very, when something is kind of like a bit , kind of like very, very bit, kind of like very, very parochial we do it all parochial or local. Here in the uk, the met police have ramped up Police Patrols across london to target individuals celebrating the hamas attacks in public. Well, joining us now is a military and defence analyst, colonel simon diggins. Good morning to you, colonel. Thanks for joining us on this sombre day. I guess the first question we have to ask is how did this attack happen in the first place . The Israeli National defence system is renowned as one of the strongest in the world, and yet seemingly by land, sea and air, hamas just rolled into the country uncontested. Uncontested. Yeah, i think one of the issues for the israelis will be to look at their systems. This is very reminiscent to what happened 50 years ago with the yom kippur war, where, again, the assumption was the israelis security, intelligence security, their intelligence apparatus and everything would prevent a of surprise prevent a kind of surprise attack, which actually occurred. And israelis were looking and so the israelis were looking very hard at their systems and trying understand was trying to understand why it was they up. Now they didnt pick this up. Now why dont know. I mean, in why we dont know. I mean, in terms of the analysis, theres been various indicators , been various indicators, conversations taking place between iran, hezbollah , who of between iran, hezbollah, who of course, one of the proxy organisations operating from from from from the lebanon and hamas itself. And theres clearly sort of exchange of information, ideas and indeed technology. So whether the technology. So whether the combination of all those things have for this have came together for this particular , it happened particular occasion, it happened on on jewish sabbath. So particular occasion, it happened on a on jewish sabbath. So particular occasion, it happened on a holiday jewish sabbath. So particular occasion, it happened on a holiday. Jewish sabbath. So particular occasion, it happened on a holiday. And sh sabbath. So particular occasion, it happened on a holiday. And it sabbath. So particular occasion, it happened on a holiday. And it wasbath. So particular occasion, it happened on a holiday. And it was also so as a holiday. And it was also a holy day. So they probably assumed that the Israeli Defences were old, like yom kippur would be slightly down, but there will be very Detailed Analysis of what was that analysis of what it was that they which to led this they missed which to led this attack. Yes. Yes. And there surely to be, and there surely has to be, because we on outside of all because we on the outside of all of have always believed of this have always believed that israeli that theres Israeli Intelligence is second to none. And yet, as many commentators are saying in todays newspapers, its almost like israels 9 11 moment. Not only has it been a terrible attack and theyre going to be rising numbers of casualties, liz, but it just happened out of the blue, it seems as though israel was taken totally by surprise. How can how can their intelligence have failed them so badly . Badly . Its very hard to work that out. I mean, as i said, there may be one of the things id be interested to try and explore and to scratch away with this quote, painful for them to work it out. But israel itself has been house against been a house divided against itself, certainly the last itself, certainly for the last yean itself, certainly for the last year, including for the first time amongst Security Forces time amongst the Security Forces. Theres a theres a report that in several months ago that came in several months ago where one of the most famous reserve fighter and bomber squadrons basically refused to serve. Just wonder whether serve. And i just wonder whether that sort of division amongst themselves , the lack clarity themselves, the lack of clarity about their mission was or about what their mission was or what doing country what theyre doing as a country led not necessarily the guard led to not necessarily the guard going down, but people not working together. Mean, working together. I mean, we have in system, in this have in this system, in this country, system which is at country, a system which is at the top of which is a joint Intelligence Committee where all the work together. The agencies work together. Notoriously, the americans who have significantly more intelligence assets of intelligence assets than all of us struggle sometimes to try and bnng us struggle sometimes to try and bring that together. But its it does rely on trust. It does actually rely on trust. It does actually rely on trust. It does actually rely on trust. It does actually rely on people having of what having a common sense of what the is. The question the mission is. So the question i the israelis would i think, for the israelis would be how is the internal be is how is the internal divisions within their country led situation whereby one led to a situation whereby one agency something, agency has understood something, but theyre not talking to the other because they see other one because they see themselves biased. Now themselves as being biased. Now thats speculating, but thats slightly speculating, but you get into the you have to try and get into the sort of detail of that, try to understand why they failed to pick out what is clearly absolutely major offensive by hamas. Hamas. Colonel diggins , the idf and colonel diggins, the idf said they were to going open the gates to hell. Some breaking news here. Israeli fighter jets have been targeting buildings known to contain hamas in telligence, bombing has continued food through the night. There are still eight positions within israel still where hamas, palestinian forces are are being gathered or gathering and being fought back. We have now the next stage of whats rapidly approaching towards an all out war, dont we . Yeah. Yeah no, we do. And its not to say that it would just be confined to the gaza border. As said, there are gaza border. As said, there are very strong links with hamas and with also some militant groups operating at the west bank. It is perfectly possible that that will be spreading out from there. Again, thats what happened at yom kippur. So the syrians came in with with the then the egyptian forces. So then the egyptian forces. So were now not in a game of interstate warfare, but that kind of spreading of the threat from different locations might also be also be an issue. And no doubt the israelis are thinking very hard about that as well. Very hard about that as well. And course, as with any and of course, as with any war, there are human beings and human suffering going on on both sides. But if we just think about the hamas operatives who got into israel and then took hostages and have apparently taken them back into gaza, presumably theyre using them or intend to use them as human shields . Shields . I think so. I mean, i think its one of the things theyll try and use to try and prevent the israelis from conducting a absolutely full out assault on it. I mean, not that would be an easy thing the israelis to easy thing for the israelis to do. I mean, the gaza strip is a third most populated area in the world by people per per area. World by by people per per area. It really is. Thats the nature of the country to try and conduct an all out assault onto onto what is essentially a very heavily urbanised area. Would be an act of extraordinary violence. And misery on a on a scale we havent seen since the second world war. So i hope they wont think like that. But nonetheless, they will no doubt be thinking about how they can use those hostages. Hostage taking thing do. Taking is a wicked thing to do. There excuse for it there is no excuse for it whatsoever. And i hope that saner heads and the people who have what you might have got what you might call decent influence on the the decent influence on the on the on the hamas will say to them, this is not a good thing to do. Its going to lead more its going to lead to more and more revenge. Please give those people and, you know, people back at and, you know, that be start of that might just be the start of something little bit more something a little bit more humane a little more humane and a little bit more sensible. But, know, hostage sensible. But, you know, hostage taking wicked. Thats sensible. But, you know, hostage takin theyve ked. Thats sensible. But, you know, hostage takin theyve just thats sensible. But, you know, hostage takin theyve just done. Lats what theyve just done. Colonel diggins, what do and colonel diggins, what do you see as the broader geopolitical fallout of this . There scenes there are extraordinary scenes yesterday iranian yesterday in the Iranian Parliament where the parliamentarians were parliamentarians there were chanting death to america. Of course, recently, biden has course, recently, joe biden has donated 6 million to the Iranian Regime to try and make peace. That looks have fallen flat. Meanwhile, in the lebanon, hezbollah are rumoured to be gathering on the border. The whole area, not just israel and the gaza strip, looks on edge now, doesnt it . It doesnt. It does indeed. I mean , it does indeed. I mean, theres always, always an issue theres always, always an issue there where the sense is there is a sort of you know, theres a tinder box waiting for someone to throw a match into it. The unkage to throw a match into it. The linkage with iran is clear. As i said, hezbollah or their proxies, theyve been operating in lebanon. Theyre also operating syria. And hamas operating in syria. And hamas are proxies for them being are also proxies for them being supported by the Iranian Intelligence and hezbollah intelligence and by hezbollah itself in terms of Information Technology and all those sort of areas which are enablers to this kind of warfare. So, yes, there is always that possibility it might spread spread further from from there. The issue of the from there. The issue of the bidens money, i mean, i think that was probably a mistake. But there are domestic pressures, which are are there as which are which are there as well. And the the iranian well. And the it the iranian government does not have a good regime, like, if you like, honounng regime, like, if you like, honouring the spirit of what was been going on. They often use that as exploitation. You know, again, hard because theyve taken would be taken hostages and would be trying to exploit that again. Thats what theyre trying to do. And you understand the. And you can understand the imperative the perspective imperative from the perspective of trying get of President Biden trying to get americans back in. It then americans back in. But it then provides of, if like, provides a sort of, if you like, an for the iranians to an open door for the iranians to do something wicked as they have just and either directly just done, and either directly and their proxies. Just done, and either directly ancand their proxies. Just done, and either directly ancand thereszir proxies. Just done, and either directly ancand theres no jroxies. Just done, and either directly ancand theres no doubt. Just done, and either directly ancand theres no doubt people and theres no doubt people waking even more of this waking up to even more of this news. Frightening enough news. It was frightening enough yesterday. Know, yesterday. But, you know, the talk going on at the talk of war going on at the moment, we have to, i suppose, remind ourselves that even though theyve never opened, admitted israel is a nuclear force, it . It admitted israel is a nuclear force, it . It is. Force, isnt it . It is. It would be very hard to identify what a sensible target would be for them with this. I would be for them with this. I think the time they they went became nuclear was an era when there was worry about proliferation. An we do know proliferation. An we do know that hamas had links through to north korea and theres no doubt that there is a possibility, at least , that they have the least, that they have the possible of some kind of Nuclear Technology will have been discussed with them from there. Thats quite special. I dont thats quite special. I dont have full details on how theyve done that. I know that. But they say they have had links through with north is with north korea. North korea is a Nuclear Power and its also a power that has used and spread, if you like, information around nuclear around the Nuclear Weapons around the world. , there is theres world. So, yes, there is theres always possibility that always that possibility that sits in the background. Sits there in the background. Colonel diggins bringing and colonel diggins bringing this back to great britain, there were scenes in parts of london last night of locals celebrating what hamas had done with palestinian flags. The metropolitan police today issuing a warning that they will clamp down on such activities. How much of an issue do you think this kind of division is on british streets as well . Im delighted the metropolitan police are taking a hard line with that. I mean, whats happened in in israel and on the gaza area is actually shameful. I mean, attacking people , taking hostages is just people, taking hostages is just shameful. Whatever the political shameful. Whatever the political tensions and lets not no, none of us here are naive about the kind of the issues that divide israel and palestine, how complicated are, how complicated they are, how historic and deep historic they are and how deep rooted some those challenges, rooted some of those challenges, however they are from there. This not the time to be using this is not the time to be using that celebrate what basically that to celebrate what basically is a wicked terrorist is a very wicked terrorist attack on two mostly peaceful people and its shameful that there are people in this country who can unaware of what who can be so unaware of what you might call the boundaries of conversation, dissent , to use conversation, dissent, to use this opportunity to do that. Im disappointed but delighted that the metropolitan police has taken a hard line, and i hope they continue with that. Simon diggins, okay. Colonel simon diggins, thank a thank you very much. That was a superb analysis. Thanks for superb analysis. Thanks for joining us today on gb news breakfast. One wonders if its going to come the Labour Party Come up in the Labour Party Conference. I think could conference. I think it could well be issue. Jeremy corbyn, well be an issue. Jeremy corbyn, for instance, is chairing a panel today. Well, the whole the whole left of all the hard left have been very pro palestine. Yeah and one hopes that anything they do say doesnt sort of ratchet up the ante because we need to sort of keep this cool. Need to sort of keep this cool. And whats been very, very interesting and as i look at the social media output of politicians around conference is everyone does tend to look for kind of angles and the normal, very pro Palestinian Labour Party mps have been conspicuous by their absolute silence on this issue in the last 24 hours since the events of yesterday morning. I think theyre being told and whipped to stay zipped on because they know on this because they know how incendiary it can be. David lammy has condemned it. Keir starmer has condemned what happened yesterday. Theyre behaving like with a tight ship, but conferences, particularly with fringe events, thats a different matter. Yeah , it can get quite heated yeah, it can get quite heated in various places. Well, the in various places. Well, the labour conference, as you Labour Party Conference, as you know, and it know, is in liverpool and it kicks today and it is likely kicks off today and it is likely to be last before the next to be the last before the next years to be the last before the next years expected general election. Yeah. Labour leader sir keir starmer heads to the gathering with lead in the with a Comfortable Lead in the polls after the partys seismic win they called it in the win as they called it in the rutherglen by election in scotland this week. Can we expect from so what can we expect from today . Lets hear from our Political Correspondent catherine forster, who has the very liverpool. Very latest from liverpool. So labour conference kicks off today here in liverpool with deputy leader Angela Rayner speech at about half 9 11 and were expecting king labour to present themselves as the change we heard rishi sunak last week , we heard rishi sunak last week, rather audaciously given the conservative, have been in power for 13 years now, saying that he was the change. Sir Keir Starmers message is going to be no labour. Actually is the change. Now of course theyre 20 points ahead in the polls. Its looking likely that sir keir starmer will be our next Prime Minister, though of course we know things can change very quickly , but a lot of that lead quickly, but a lot of that lead is not so much that people are wildly enthusiastic about him or indeed about labour, but really there are a lot of people are very, very fed indeed with a very, very fed up indeed with a current government. So so labour will plan to offer their sort of positive vision for why people should choose them. So i would expect to be a lot of fleshing out of these five missions that keir starmer has mentioned, including making britain a green Energy Superpower power, having the highest sustained growth in the highest sustained growth in the g7 and nhs fit for the future , cleaner, safer streets future, cleaner, safer streets and opportunity everywhere. And and opportunity everywhere. And now weve already heard some policy ideas around the nhs. More scanners , for instance, 1. 5 more scanners, for instance, 1. 5 billion for bringing down waiting lists and also an announcement yesterday on affordable social housing. So lets see what emerges over the next few days here in liverpool. Well bring you all the latest i catherine, thank you very much indeed. Right. Lets see if we can cross now to our West Midlands reporterjack we can cross now to our West Midlands reporter jack carson we can cross now to our West Midlands reporterjack carson. Midlands reporter jack carson. Hi there, jack. Have you been taking the temperature of the locals or at least the delegates . Yeah certainly some good expectation in the air for laboun expectation in the air for labour, of course, at this Party Conference. Of course, liverpool very much a labour heartland, a big labour city. And keir starmer did actually write to the, to the people of liverpool before of he arrived yesterday of course he arrived yesterday here at the Labour Party Conference. Of course he says that imagine if labour had been in power. He he called this city the developing driving fonnard, trying take the opportunities trying to take the opportunities of the saying that if of the future, saying that if labour in power, the labour have been in power, the city would be so much stronger and so much greater. Hes really trying of course g up this trying to, of course g up this labour heartland, up. These labour heartland, g up. These labour of course labour heartland, g up. These labougoing of course labour heartland, g up. These labougoing to of course labour heartland, g up. These labougoing to be of course labour heartland, g up. These labougoing to be keycourse labour heartland, g up. These labougoing to be keycowthey were going to be key if they are going go out into are to going go out into communities try and convince communities and try and convince of course those labour voters, if going of course if they are going to of course come still for labour and come out still for labour and also those swing also try and turn those swing voters to and make him, of voters to try and make him, of course, next Prime Minister. Course, the next Prime Minister. Its certainly few days its certainly a big few days here conference. Of course, here at conference. Of course, as he to out his as he looks to set out his vision the next labour vision for the next Labour Government, vision being government, his vision for being Prime Minister. Bakhmut fadden, who partys now who of course is the partys now national coordinator, who of course is the partys now National Conferenceoordinator, who of course is the partys now National Conference isrdinator, who of course is the partys now National Conference is goingwr, who of course is the partys now National Conference is going to says this conference is going to be policy rich. Of course, hes had criticism, keir starmer, hasnt he, about changing his views on different policies and not being clear not necessarily being clear about the labour party about what the labour party would were in would propose if they were in government in reaction to some of the things. Of course rishi sunak has done. But pat mcfadden said going policy said this is going to be policy rich set out that rich and really set out that vision. Heard catherine vision. As you heard catherine mentioning there, lots of policies, rumoured policies, of course, rumoured and well. That one and reported as well. That one on housing announced on Affordable Housing announced yesterday. Thats certainly going down well in places going to go down well in places up here the north, of course, up here in the north, of course, particularly of course, particularly, of course, with affordable being so Affordable Housing being so important people, important to many people, particularly here in liverpool as well. But of course, when it comes to people , it comes to comes to people, it comes to labour particularly. Of course theres of views theres a wide range of views across that party there is across that party as there is with political party. So of with any political party. So of course really on, of course labour really big on, of course labour really big on, of course their green agenda, course on their green agenda, on, making green on, on making britain a green Energy Superpower. Of course Energy Superpower. But of course weve peoples power weve got the peoples power this that im going to this morning that im going to be presenting and speaking to. One is a former one of one of those is a former one of the people on the panel this morning former labour morning is a former labour member, member of the the member, a member of the of the unison well. And hes unison union as well. And hes not keen, so keen, so sure on not so keen, so keen, so sure on such commitment to net zero. Such a commitment to net zero. And think possibly a lot and i think maybe possibly a lot of older generation, of the older generation, particularly older labour particularly the older labour supporters, might will have some worries around the spending and the can the commitment that labour can make zero. Of course with make to net zero. Of course with also improving like also improving things like pubuc also improving things like public around Public Services around the country of good country as well. So lots of good policy ideas that i think will go well, particularly here go down well, particularly here in maybe in liverpool, but also maybe some some of those some concerns from some of those older members older Party Members who are a little bit concerned about where exactly all this money is going to from and how keir to come from and how keir starmer a fiscally starmer can form a fiscally responsible government. Responsible government. Carson, thank you okay, jack carson, thank you for update from liverpool for that update from liverpool and the thing that i think about all of this is, is it seems to me that keir starmer is winning in the polls by not really saying or doing anything. Yes, he hes just not winning he is. Hes just not winning by default. Yeah, hes not being as bad as other as the other lot. And i think this is the time a out there in gb a lot of people out there in gb news land who loaned the conservatives their votes the conservatives their votes in the last 2019 the red last general in 2019 and the red wall, especially will be wanting to us your medals. To know, show us your medals. What for . What do what do you stand for . What do your what about your policies . What about immigration . Answer immigration . Ill answer the tough the tough questions, notjust the nhs comfort zone. Nhs and the comfort zone. Well, exactly. Theyre leaking out little bits today about put about what theyre going to put £1. 5 billion the nhs. £1. 5 billion into the nhs. Theyre going to pay generous overtime to doctors and nurses , overtime to doctors and nurses, i presume as well, to try and do something about the waiting lists by taxing non doms. And lists by taxing non doms. And there are a few other bits leaking out, but nothing so far on immigration and actually nothing so far on cost of living either. Now he may well be either. Now he may well be saving that for his big speech. Youd hope so, because i dont think any more they can say, oh, cant put our ideas say, oh, we cant put our ideas out there. The tories might nick them. Now this is the conference before general election. Before the general election. I think get off the think people now get off the fence, it out, put it to the fence, put it out, put it to the people and let them have a clear choice, clear point of difference. Thats voters want. But give him a chance. Its only of the conference only day one of the Conference Today and havent got today and they havent even got started yet. You point, i think if you get my point, i think voters feel that shows what you stand for. And let us make a choice. I would leafing choice. I would just leafing through sunday papers and choice. I would just leafing thr0lwhat sunday papers and choice. I would just leafing thr0lwhat fellinday papers and choice. I would just leafing thr0lwhat fell outy papers and choice. I would just leafing thr0lwhat fell out ofyapers and choice. I would just leafing thr0lwhat fell out of the rs and look what fell out of the observer today. A whole leaflet on theres a whole leaflet on how to be parent. We were how to be a parent. We were talking about that. Some the talking about that. Some of the worst problems in society. Weve talked a lot about rugby so far this morning. Looking ahead 430 this afternoon, briefly , afternoon, tottenham briefly, top of the table man city arsenal, the big one. Well you say briefly. I mean, its possible they could stay there depending on the result from later today. Is from later today. But this is a real of the titans. 430 at real clash of the titans. 430 at the emirates, arsenal versus manchester now Manchester City. Now psychological psychologists , psychological psychologists, martin, as you know, in sport is extremely important. Arsenal extremely important. Arsenal have to somehow get past their nemesis, Manchester City, if theyre to make any inroads into progressing towards challenging for title and not just for the title and not just challenging maybe think challenging, maybe even think about winning the about actually winning the thing. The only problem is that theyve last 12 theyve lost their last 12 League Meetings at home away League Meetings at home and away against and against Manchester City and theyve taken some real chastening scorelines in that. Sorry, but on the receiving end of scorelines of some very chasing scorelines in that time last season, for example , all three times example, all three times manchester dispatched Manchester City dispatched arsenal. Thought, we thought arsenal. We thought, we thought for world until at least for all the world until at least about april. That arsenal were going win everything going to win it. Everything fell into with they were into place with them. They were getting needed. But getting results they needed. But again, that again, they came up to that hurdle of Manchester City. They lost the etihad. Couldnt lost 4 1 at the etihad. Couldnt do interesting here, do it. Whats interesting here, the the pitch as the dynamic off the pitch as well, its been spoken about before, arsenal before, but arteta the arsenal manager, was the manager, mikel arteta, was the assistant to pep assistant manager to Pep Guardiola manchester for guardiola at Manchester City for a of number of years, a number of a number of years, having each other from having known each other from their in much earlier their time in spain much earlier in career. Guardiola was in their career. Guardiola was asked his press conference a asked in his press conference a couple ago, he said, is couple of days ago, he said, is it that just a mini me it true that hes just a mini me of you, or is he just a smaller version of prototype of you . And guardiola absolutely not, guardiola said, absolutely not, because dress better than because i dress much better than him, that be . So him, so how can that be . So well a at their well get a look at their outfits later on today. But i mean , arsenal are unbeaten. Mean, arsenal are unbeaten. Manchester beaten at Manchester City were beaten at wolves manchester wolves last week, but Manchester City ahead by a point. And city are ahead by a point. And you just think that when city get a few players back later in the season maybe they might click if arsenal click into gear but if arsenal are to make any kind of are going to make any kind of challenge this season and sustain to sustain it, theyre going to have games like this. And have to win games like this. And today would be great point to today would be a great point to start, but a loss for man start, but a shock loss for man city their last outing. City in their last outing. Will that affect their psychology just be psychology or will it just be business usual . Business as usual . Well, look, no team apart from arsenal in history of well, look, no team apart fronpremierl in history of well, look, no team apart fronpremierl in backry of well, look, no team apart fronpremierl in back in of well, look, no team apart fronpremierl in back in 2003, the premier league back in 2003, four ever gone four has ever gone through a season without losing one game. So its not uncommon for city early the season win, early in the season to win, to lose the odd here. While lose the odd game here. While there, forget, they lost there, dont forget, they lost players the summer theres players in the summer so theres a adaptation as they a period of adaptation as they kind juggle their options and kind of juggle their options and see got. And also see what theyve got. And also have manage injuries well, have to manage injuries as well, dont i dont expect, dont forget. So i dont expect, i given given how big this i think given given how big this match think go match is, i think theyll go into with having had into it with with having had a little bit of a reality check next season. I think city are going to be too good for manchester for arsenal on the day them win 2 1. Day and i take them to win 2 1. Like to bring nottingham i like to bring Nottingham Forest last forest into this played last night against crystal palace. A of a boring game of the a bit of a boring game of the day it. It wasnt a bore draw. It was a little bit boring, but the bottom of the table already aiden is starting to feel like squeaky bum time for a lot already. Only lot of teams already. Hes only three there between all three points there between all of clubs. So cant of those clubs. So we cant forget again. They lost forget again. Luton. They lost yesterday they yesterday to tottenham. They missed of a goal. It missed a sitter of a goal. It could have been 1 0 up. They look, they look for every, look, but they look for every, every episode man walking. Yeah, possibly. Then ive yeah, possibly. But then ive been teams who been looking at the teams who came from the championship came up from the championship and look than and they look weaker than theyve long, long theyve looked for a long, long time. Since 1997, 98 have we time. Not since 1997, 98 have we seen every team that came up and go immediately. I think go down immediately. And i think that a that could that theres a chance that could happen year. I wonder happen this year. And i wonder whether because of whether its because of the finance, luton town, for finance, because luton town, for example, have been in the example, have not been in the premier before in their premier league before in their history. The incentive for history. So is the incentive for them up to the premier them to come up to the premier league dont gamble everything on even if you on staying up. But even if you add just modest, just modest additions take additions to the side and take the million and off the £100 million and off of finishing bottom maybe the finishing bottom in, maybe the premier has created this premier league has created this problem all by itself. I mean, as say, still early yet as i say, its still early yet luton are the with luton are off the mark with a win want to overturn win they want to overturn a couple of weeks ago, didnt they, which outstanding. But they, which was outstanding. But burnley mean beaten at home by burnley i mean beaten at home by chelsea four goals to chelsea yesterday four goals to one have got one Sheffield United have got one Sheffield United have got one all so as one point all season so as i say, the promoted look say, the promoted sides look as if theyre be in well, if theyre going to be in well, in they almost certainly in fact, they almost certainly will in the shake up will be in the in the shake up for relegation at the end of the season. Theres no question about that. For the as well, you and for the fans as well, you know, get and get know, to get promoted and to get hammered week, not hammered every week, its not much it . When i used to much fun, is it . When i used to play much fun, is it . When i used to play got play football and we got promoted, was promoted, getting promoted was the worst thing that ever happened because we got happened to us because we got mullered we happened to us because we got mu|mullered we happened to us because we got mu|mullered every week we happened to us because we got mu|mullered every week ande happened to us because we got mu|mullered every week and when got mullered every week and when we i was we got relegated, we. I was outside right . The dressing not left back in the dressing room. Go. Room. There we go. An old joke yeah, yeah. Its an old joke that have heard that one that you may have heard that one before, the of the before, but the fact of the matter is, im saying is matter is, what im saying is take and run and go take the money and run and go down and it. Its down and enjoy it. Maybe its not worst in the world. Not the worst idea in the world. No, not. What well, no, its not. But what what do is they go what clubs tend to do is they go down, reassess. M ay down reassess. May down and try they may be a go down and try and go up again from a position of stronger position of a stronger position basically. So nonnich city, for example, went down. They built a training example, went down. They built a train can attract better players. They can attract better players. It boost it means they can boost their youth do kinds of youth system and do all kinds of infrastructure issues that need to say, to be resolved. So, as you say, theres, you know, its possible you fighting. You can go down fighting. Sometimes its better to just take and run. Take the money and go and run. Point, aiden yeah. On that point, aiden take and run. Its take the money and run. Its been mate. For been superb, mate. Thanks for coming both. Coming in. Good to see you both. Thank you. Do stay with yeah, thank you. Do stay with us because our headline yeah, thank you. Do stay with us becalcomingyur headline yeah, thank you. Do stay with us becalcomingyur next. Ine makers. Coming up next. And i think surprised by at think youd be surprised by at least the stories well least one of the stories well be covering. For instance, how fast do you think Freddie Flintoff he was flintoff was going when he was driving that car on top gear, which resulted in the terrible crash frankly nearly crash which frankly nearly killed him and has probably killed him and has probably killed the programme. How killed off the programme. How fast do you think he was going . Well tell in few minutes well tell you in a few minutes theres help for households. Are you over state pension age . If your weekly income is below £201. 05, or £306. 85 if you live with a partner, you could be eligible for pension credit, even if you own your home or have savings. Its worth, on average, £3,500 a year, and you could get help with heating bills and more, plus cost of living payments. Well come back. Its 841. Youre watching or listening to breakfast with an anne martin. So yeah , we are going so yeah, we are going headune so yeah, we are going headline making. Were having headline making. Were having a look at any of the news stories that are popping up from the newspapers this morning with suzanne holder and tom slater. Suzanne holder and tom slater. And just before the break, i was talking about Freddie Flintoff. And this terrible crash that happened when he was filming for top gear. And weve always top gear. And weve always imagined that he was going at one heck of a lick. Imagined that he was going at one heck of a lick. In imagined that he was going at one heck of a lick. In fact, one heck of a lick. In fact, i think we were told it was Something Like 150 miles an houn Something Like 150 miles an hour. So but in the mail, its giving us a different story. It is. Its saying he actually the accident happened when they were going at 22mph, which is quite surprising. But it has been about nine, ten months since this accident. And nobodys seen anything on Freddie Flintoff for quite while, until quite quite a while, until quite recently. Clearly when recently. And clearly when he was you can see that i was pictured, you can see that i think his half of his face has been very paralysed and hes had lots of operations. But the lots of operations. But the story here and the details that ive seen says that the car he was in didnt have a roof. It did have like a halo thing, but he was dragged along the tarmac by on his face. And some of the some of the people working on the show actually have counselling after they saw i like i said from the beginning, weve all been imagined or i thought we were actually told it was Something Like, im sure ive seen a crash as part of the that may have been of some of the route been some of some of the route that he was doing. But when the crash was on bend. Was on a bend. So it was he was on a bend. So it was it was it was taking a corner and flipped over onto and it flipped over onto its roof. He didnt he wasnt wearing there wearing a helmet. And there wasnt roof to the car. And wasnt a roof to the car. And thats where the injuries were sustained. And also kind sustained. And theres also kind of a bit of misinformation going around. Nobody is absolutely around. Nobody is absolutely sure gear has been sure whether top gear has been completely cancelled or not. They seem to have paused it, but theyve theyve kind of flip flopped but obviously, flopped on that. But obviously, investigations have been launched. Doesnt to investigations have been lal any ad. Doesnt to investigations have been lalany particularioesnt to investigations have been lal any particular blame. To investigations have been lalany particular blame. It to investigations have been lalany particular blame. It is to be any particular blame. It is its a tragic accident, obviously. I think what happened here is it was a three wheeled car, so they had to two wheels at the front, one at the back and it was the first corner. Tipped it into the first he tipped it into the first corner rolled. So it corner and the car rolled. So it seems he was applying seems like maybe he was applying his usual driving technique to an unusual vehicle and a tragic accident happened. But at low speed, it just goes to show you he over. There no he rolled over. There was no cage car. You he rolled over. There was no cage car. You can see cage on this car. You can see a picture of it there. Yeah it just headrest. And his just got like headrest. And his his head was literally the first thing that touched a thing that touched down in a way, real lesson way, its a real lesson to us all, it, that. All, isnt it, that. Yeah, you can imagine a terrible would happen at terrible crash would happen at 150. Learn that 150. But when you learn that something so changing could something so life changing could happen. Yes. Albeit in slightly unusual circumstances at 22 miles an hour. Yeah it shows that maybe we need to pay an awful lot more respect to the way we drive and to certain of the vehicles that we drive with and you should take and that you should take all sorts sort of sorts of different sort of Safety Measures and you do see people as well, you know, driving around, especially in cities , on bikes sometimes motorbikes. And when they arent wearing a helmet, you do kind of think what are you thinking . Because the injury that you can the kind of injury that you can sustain is just so life changing. Yeah. Cut to one of tom should we cut to one of yours its obviously labour yours now . Its obviously labour Conference Today. Conference kicks off today. The daily mail obviously are having a this time. Its a pop at labour this time. Its about the fact labour is pledging for pledging to make it easier for people to change sex and i should say would naturally expect mail on sunday to go expect the mail on sunday to go after labour on some of these questions. Has been an but this has been such an open for labour party but this has been such an opeso for labour party but this has been such an opeso long. r labour party but this has been such an opeso long. So labour party but this has been such an opeso long. So thereyour party but this has been such an opeso long. So there is1r party for so long. So there is a policy which is being considered by National Policy forum policy which is being considered by would 1al policy forum policy which is being considered by would lookolicy forum policy which is being considered by would look at y forum policy which is being considered by would look at y f process which would look at the process of gender recognition. Of course, few years has course, the last few years has been with of these been bound up with all of these rows or not rows over whether or not so called gender should rows over whether or not sointroduced. Der should rows over whether or not sointroduced. Essentially should be introduced. Essentially making it a matter of self declaration the question of your quote unquote gender identity. See, this would identity. See, this would look at quote here, talking about at the quote here, talking about the process is the current process is intrusive, outdated and humiliating. You currently have humiliating. You currently have to live within your new acquired gender two years. You need gender for two years. You need a to have this kind of sign off of a in plan, we saw a doctor in the plan, as we saw proposed scotland , was proposed in scotland, was originally pare originally to kind of pare that back think labour are in back. I think labour are in a really difficult position here, first all, they are first of all, because they are butting up against biological reality and opinion the reality and the opinion of the vast of british vast majority of the british public. Starmer public. Keir starmer has thankfully on this thankfully moved on this question. But the best hes managed so far from saying that it wrong to say that that a it was wrong to say that that a woman is an adult human female. Hes now said that his current position is 99. 9 of women dont have penises. But as mathematicians, clever and ive pointed out, thats still an awful lot of penises. And this pointed out, thats still an avthe lot of penises. And this pointed out, thats still an avthe sortyf penises. And this pointed out, thats still an avthe sort ofyenises. And this pointed out, thats still an avthe sort of issues. And this pointed out, thats still an avthe sort of issue which this pointed out, thats still an avthe sort of issue which isis is the sort of issue which is that on this is one of those things which i find so fascinating because keir starmer has wilfully upset the of fascinating because keir starmer hasparty lly upset the of fascinating because keir starmer hasparty on upset the of fascinating because keir starmer hasparty on so set the of fascinating because keir starmer hasparty on so manye of fascinating because keir starmer hasparty on so many particular his party on so many particular issues. As kind of issues. He campaigned as kind of corbyn, but who would be willing to do up his tie and sing the national and then on all National Anthem and then on all those economic policies hes u turned, of u turned, theres all kinds of things been happy things on which hes been happy to raise hackles amongst his kind rank file because he kind of rank and file because he wants electable on this wants to be electable on this issue, vast majority issue, where the vast majority of are on same page, of people are on the same page, which it should be which is to say it should be respectful to trans people. They shouldnt any meaningful against in any meaningful way, but as but there is such thing as biological sex and there are rights that. He rights which flow from that. He feels of properly of feels incapable of properly of actually saying that out loud on the other. And i think thats going to come back to bite him. That a consistent point isnt that a consistent point with people isnt that a consistent point with really people isnt that a consistent point with really know people isnt that a consistent point with really know what people isnt that a consistent point with really know what starmer dont really know what starmer stands for on a on a great many things. Labour party on things. And the labour party on the they are its just the one hand they are its just the one hand they are its just the nobody really the culture war. Nobody really cares as saw cares about this. But as we saw in with isla bryce and in scotland with isla bryce and the biological man who said that a woman who was put into a jail, womens jail, it is incredibly emotive and it does motivate voters because its about protecting women and fairness. It is about fairness and its also skewing statistics left, right and centre. When youre recording crimes by the gender that somebody is presenting by and not by their biological. So you do have, you know, far more women now apparently committing Sexual Offences and rapes, which theyve never done before now. And how to treat that. It puts the police and it puts the legal system and it puts courts in a very difficult position. And it also means that were going to miss how deal miss out on how to deal with certain issues. If were if certain issues. If were if were misunderstanding who is committing how do you committing those, how do you deal . Do come deal with that . How do you come up how do you put up with policy . How do you put up with policy . How do you put up measures in up with put Safety Measures in place youre actually looking place if youre actually looking in wrong for in the wrong place for the people who are involved people who are who are involved in certain things . In certain things . I think thats and isnt i think thats also and isnt the totally out of the debate totally out of proportion well . Yeah i mean, proportion as well . Yeah i mean, it me every single day it seems to me every single day theres some big trans issue that gets people hot under the collar. And is it really proportionate . It cant be, can it . I think its proportionate, but only insofar as behind the scenes. This these policies have scenes. This these policies have been coming in and changing. So and now people are finding out about them thats why about them and thats why theres them theres such a plethora of them. People werent aware that you had of gender had all of these kind of gender neutral various neutral policies in various different people different corporations. People werent different corporations. People wnwast different corporations. People wnwas a situation not just in it was a situation not just in scotland, but even in england, where have where you could have sex offenders womens offenders being put in womens pnsons offenders being put in womens prisons everyone assumed prisons because everyone assumed that its just matter of that its just a matter of common that wouldnt common sense that you wouldnt do that. I think the reason assumed do that. I isense,1e reason assumed do that. I isense, and ason assumed do that. I isense, and i;on assumed do that. I isense, and i;on asthatzd common sense, and i think that wasnt common sense, and i think that waspeople the media. Well, people blame the media. Well, theres a story every day, but actually, if actually, like you say, if people made that people arent made aware that actually the biggest actually some of the Biggest Companies the Country Companies in the country have certain might certain policies that you might work , but you dont work for them, but you dont know is actually the medias know it is actually the medias job to let people know that that kind thing is going on. Job to let people know that that kiniand thing is going on. Job to let people know that that kiniand theres going on. Job to let people know that that kiniand theres going ofeeling, and theres a lot of feeling, i think, this legislation i think, that this legislation has happened stealth has happened by stealth and people it, people are becoming aware of it, and i think rightly, and they are, i think rightly, often on to often quite cheesed off on to the point, that the next point, susan, that leads into somebody leads us neatly into somebody that cheesed that people are often cheesed off with. London mayor sadiq khan. Off with. London mayor sadiq khan. Yes. Khan. Yes. Whats done now . Whats he whats he done now . Whats he done now . Basically . Yeah. Hes basically . Yeah. Well, hes calling government to calling on the government to expand identification expand acceptable identification for. For voters. And the point hes making and its not a bad one actually on this point, i dont think is that things like youre going that things like if youre going to identification to take identification with you to take identification with you to will all need to vote, which we will all need to vote, which we will all need to not everybody aware to do and not everybody is aware of. All, hes saying of. So first of all, hes saying everyone be aware Everyone Needs to be more aware of you might Everyone Needs to be more aware of up you might Everyone Needs to be more aware of up denied might Everyone Needs to be more aware of up denied yourt Everyone Needs to be more aware of up denied your vote. Turn up and be denied your vote. But like didnt realise but things like i didnt realise Discount Travel cards for pensioners allowed. But as pensioners are allowed. But as proof identity at the polling proof of identity at the polling station, not student id or station, but not student id or young peoples travel, theres a reason for that. Well, what is reason for that. Well, what is the reason for that . When the reason for that is when you well, reason you apply. Well, no. The reason for that is when you for for that is when you apply for a pensioners you have pensioners bus pass. You have to show valid get it right show a valid id to get it right , like a passport or a drivers licence. Dont have licence. Whereas you dont have to apply Valid National to apply a Valid National acceptable form of id to get a student so the pensioners student card. So the pensioners valid validation has been validated. Validated. Why cant i just get a student then . I must have student card then . I must have to you must have to something. You get but you but you can get one, but you dont show id to get dont have to show id to get it. Therefore that student card hasnt an hasnt been verified against an acceptable documentation. If you get me. Anyway, im digressing. Get me. Anyway, im digressing. I do. I do get it, but i think thats a very interesting. I do. I do get it, but i think about a very interesting. I do. I do get it, but i think about because |teresting. I do. I do get it, but i think about because becausej. I do. I do get it, but i think about because because we what about because because we talked it in the green talked about it in the green room the you room and i think the word you used just looks a bit. Used was it just looks a bit. What word used . What was the word you used . Of this i was. I wasnt aware of this detail. Youve got detail. But if youve got a situation where older people are able obviously able to vote, thats obviously going the away going to skew towards the away from party shall we from the labour party shall we say. So its going to look rigged. Was the case. Rigged. If that was the case. But say, theres always but as you say, theres always more to these things more nuance to these things and a course, a lot of people, of course, historically have been saying, well , is that left well, why is it that the left are against voter id . There have been because there have been allegations, course, and allegations, of course, and provable. Know, provable. You know, imprisonments vote rigging in imprisonments of vote rigging in certain left wing boroughs, including Tower Hamlets . Including Tower Hamlets . Well, this is, i think, when it comes to this, youve to it comes to this, youve got to you have carefully, you do have to tread carefully, because that because i think anything that puts extra hurdle because i think anything that puts someonea hurdle because i think anything that puts someonea hubeing able between someone and being able to a problem. Between someone and being able to could a problem. Between someone and being able to could also a problem. Between someone and being able to could also i a problem. Between someone and being able to could also i canyroblem. Between someone and being able to could also i can imagine and it could also i can imagine this being a problem for this also being a problem for older least older voters as well, not least because wouldnt aware because they wouldnt be aware that carry because they wouldnt be aware that so carry because they wouldnt be aware that so adding carry because they wouldnt be aware that so adding hurdles this. So i think adding hurdles between their ability this. So i think adding hurdles bevoten their ability this. So i think adding hurdles bevote , their ability this. So i think adding hurdles bevote , youve their ability this. So i think adding hurdles bevote , youve got their ability this. So i think adding hurdles bevote , youve got to 1eir ability this. So i think adding hurdles bevote , youve got to do ability this. So i think adding hurdles bevote , youve got to do itbility to vote, youve got to do it very carefully. Its very carefully. I think its also quite clear that where very carefully. I think its also have clear that where very carefully. I think its also haveclear a at where very carefully. I think its also haveclear a at vofere there have been a lot of controversies, its often around postal voting and kind of harvesting and that sort of sense, is necessarily sense, which is not necessarily a turning your a case of turning up to your polling id, polling station with your id, that said, i think as that being said, i think its as long as these rules are, if we are have rules , they are to have these rules, they have enforced an have to be enforced in an evenhanded proportionate evenhanded and proportionate way. And also just to sure way. And also just to make sure everyone about them, everyone knows about them, because to be everyone knows about them, beaiuse to be everyone knows about them, bea situation to be everyone knows about them, bea situation people to be in a situation where people are turning vote turning up, expecting to vote and that would be a real and cant. That would be a real problem. Definitely us very okay, tom, tell us very quickly price a pint quickly why the price of a pint is getting out of proportion again, is essentially its just overhead for publicans at this point in terms of both their energy bills, which are still a lot higher than they were historically, as well as rents and so on. So were getting to the situation where, according so were getting to the sitthe on where, according so were getting to the sitthe office where, according so were getting to the sitthe office forlere, according so were getting to the sitthe office for national rding to the office for national statistics, they statistics, i didnt know they looked statistics, i didnt know they lookwthey do. The typical cost that they do. The typical cost is at £4. 62 per pint and is already at £4. 62 per pint and its looking like its going to top £5. And its one of those things really believable , things really believable, especially if you think about how many thousands of pubs have been closing over the course of the ten, 15 years, kind of the past ten, 15 years, kind of post smoking theyre really post smoking ban. Theyre really under anyway. And now under the cosh anyway. And now all of this situation where there have been struggling to compete with the supermarkets and retailers whatever and the retailers and whatever and the retailers and whatever and going to be in real and were going to be in real trouble if these things kind of get completely out of hand. And its which its its something which its difficult that kind difficult to see where that kind of to be of allowance is going to be made for. They freeze for. You know, they freeze beer duty like. The duty all they like. But at the same time, these prices are still yesterday still incredibly high. Yesterday i pint at i bought a pint of beer at paddington station. I paid for pint guess what . I paid for a pint of lager. Of lager. No , £6. 50. £8, no, £6. 50. £8, no, £6. 50. Im so angry. I drank it. Im so angry. I drank it. Theyve got another one very, very quickly. We must get this in. Susan. Why do people who earn more money, why are they more likely to cheat on their partners . Well, i dont know why it is, although we could all probably have guess. But apparently, have a guess. But apparently, statistically, true statistically, it is true that if money as a man, if you earn more money as a man, you are more likely cheat. You are more likely to cheat. But youre a lower paid woman but if youre a lower paid woman and youre more likely, well , and youre more likely, well, the daily star is used, the phrase, they cant keep their hands to themselves. Well, on a low. And the headline low wage. And the headline theyve got, which like , is theyve got, which i do like, is that a wallet in your or that a wallet in your pocket or are just pleased me. Are you just pleased to see me. Is but are you just pleased to see me. Is yeah but are you just pleased to see me. Is yeah , but are you just pleased to see me. Is yeah , there but are you just pleased to see me. Is yeah , there is but are you just pleased to see me. Is yeah , there is a but are you just pleased to see me. Is yeah , there is a naturalut but yeah, there is a natural kind of solution to that though i think in some ways, isnt there . This pay . But is this equal pay . But is this equal pay . Is this this wondering is this is this wondering wantaway men or is it the fact that actually theyre very desirable and therefore they have women for themselves . Thats theyre telling have women for themselves . Yes,. s theyre telling have women for themselves . Yes, but theyre telling have women for themselves . Yes, but buttheyre telling have women for themselves . Yes, but but thevre telling have women for themselves . Yes, but but the personing us. Yes, but but the person telling us that a car dealer. Telling us that is a car dealer. Well the person would think well the person i would think top of people top of the list of people you shouldnt trust is a second hand car you go. Shouldnt trust is a second hand car it you go. Shouldnt trust is a second hand car it comes you go. Shouldnt trust is a second hand car it comes from you go. Shouldnt trust is a second hand car it comes from becausej go. Shouldnt trust is a second hand car it comes from because if]0. Shouldnt trust is a second hand car it comes from because if you but it comes from because if you want to know where these want to know where all these statistics , its easy for me to statistics, its easy for me to say coming from its say coming from, its illicitencounters. Com , which illicitencounters. Com, which apparently noted pollster which is a dating site for married couples, which i have to say i dont quite understand the point of, but there you go. Oh, and they have a logistic in rich blokes getting dating websites. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Mm. Mm. Oh, thank you for being fabulous headline makers us fabulous headline makers for us today. Some brilliant stories today. Some brilliant stories actually. The one we didnt actually. And the one we didnt cover is the size the ozone cover is the size of the ozone hole, apparently three hole, which is apparently three times the size of brazil and could get larger. Were going to be tasting a touch of curry because today is the last day of National Curry week and we thought wed celebrate by having oh, i dont know if were going to have hot or cold curry hot. I think even an and i think weve even got an alcohol and i think weve even got an alcnoh, all right. Okay well, oh, all right. Okay well, thats going to spend thats how were going to spend today do know how today. But do let us know how youre spending afternoon youre spending this afternoon in most parts of the uk as you just heard there, its fairly good morning. Its 9 00 on sunday, the 8th of october. These are the stories weve been covering for you this morning. And the israel Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has vowed to take revenge against hamas. Take revenge against hamas. Meanwhile, our Prime Minister, rishi sunak , says the uk rishi sunak, says the uk government stands in full solidarity with israel against what he said was a cowardly and depraved attack from the palestine militant group. This is what middle east security analyst Seth Frantzman told us earlier. Earlier. The terrorists were able to penetrate at 29 different locations , apparently. So it was locations, apparently. So it was a it was a huge and unprecedented attack. And it does appear to be a huge lapse in security. I mean, there are a lot of civilian communities along the border, but those communities have faced threats, you know, since the 1950s. So this is a known quantity. This kind of threat. Kind of threat. And the labour conference kicks off today in liverpool. Gb kicks off today in liverpool. Gb news will be there bringing you every twist and turn from sir Keir Starmers final conference before the general election next year. Yean yes, labour are here in liverpool with a real spring in their step after that huge victory against the snp. Could sir keir starmer be Prime Minister in about a year from now . Now . And as the 2024 us election looms closer, donald trump has been campaigning in iowa. Earlier we spoke to chair of republicans overseas, greg swenson, who discussed the main priorities for americans and the harm caused to the economy by the Biden Administration as he put it. You bring up a great point. Martin usually americans in terms of elections dont really know. Foreign policy doesnt rank in the top. But the economy has been really damaged by bidens policies, specifically by those policies. And some wonder if he did it on purpose. Why would you do this when you know that youre going to have inflation from reckless spending . And of course , all eyes 7 and of course , all eyes are and of course, all eyes are on this october heat wave. Jonathan vautrey has your weather. Heavy rain continues across parts of scotland today , whilst parts of scotland today, whilst areas further south will once again be experiencing unseasonable warmth. Join me unseasonable warmth. Join me later for all the weather details. Details. Yeah, good morning. Im Martin Daubney. And im anne diamond , and and im anne diamond, and this is breakfast on gb news. Well, in a couple of moments, were going to be joined by a chef wholl be able to tell us and you how to celebrate the last day. Today of National Curry week. So maybe that will curry week. So maybe that will give you food for thought if youre thinking of what to have for lunch. Maybe you will be able to eschew , if thats the able to eschew, if thats the right word , the traditional right word, the traditional british sunday roast and go instead for a curry. Or maybe youre one of the many people whos got in touch and said, well, actually had a curry last night and still got some left over and youre actually having it for breakfast right now. I feel quite vindicated that other because other people do that because whenever sort of tuck into whenever i sort of tuck into last nights leftovers, which i really to i feel a bit really like to do, i feel a bit kind of dirty doing that. Like its to its a wrong thing to do. Oh, no, ive always loved doing that. Yes, i think its a treat if you come down the next morning kitchen and you morning into the kitchen and you realise you didnt finish realise that you didnt finish off you had night and off what you had last night and theres really nice theres Something Really Nice already cooked for you. Was joy early on we already cooked for you. Some was joy early on we already cooked for you. Some sous joy early on we already cooked for you. Some sous holderirly on we already cooked for you. Some sous holder duringwe already cooked for you. Some sous holder during the had some sous holder during the newspaper review and we found that holder, you that that noddy holder, you know that noddy holder, he likes cold curry for breakfast, although she says she doesnt let him have bed. Have it in bed. You know, maybe thats not the right place to have but the right place to have it, but whatever having for your whatever youre having for your breakfast, watch us this breakfast, as you watch us this morning, day, wont morning, have a great day, wont you . Lot of serious you . Theres a lot of serious news as well. Course, news about as well. Of course, the Palestinian Islamist group hamas. You know, hamas. Of course, as you know, this yesterday, we were this time yesterday, we were telling launched huge telling you, launched a huge attack on israel out of attack on israel almost out of the blue with israeli officials reporting about 2500 rockets being fired from gaza, as well as sending fighters across the border. Yeah, hamas militants and expectedly stormed into southern towns across the region on a jewish holiday where residents were urged to stay close to bomb shelters through these attacks, hamas fighters killed at least 2250 israelis throughout the day and escaped back into gaza with dozens of citizens who are now being held hostage. And in response to the surprise attack, more than 230 gazans were killed when israel responded with one of its most devastating days of retaliatory strikes. The israeli prime strikes. The israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, declared that israel would take mighty vengeance, as he called it, and he promised to reduce gaza to rubble after the deadliest day of violence in israel since the yom kippur war. 50 years ago, fighting between both sides continued overnight in parts of southern israel and reports now suggest that at least 480 israeli and palestinian , as have been palestinian, as have been reported, as dead following the attacks here in the uk. The met police have ramped up Police Patrols across london to target individuals who have apparently been celebrating these hamas attacks in public in the uk. Hamas has considered a Terror Organisation , of course. Well, organisation, of course. Well, joining us now is a charge daffairs of israel to the uk, oren maumusson. Thanks for joining us in the studio this morning. A sombre day, a surprise attack. And i guess the first question we have to ask is how was security breached . Seemingly unaware. And the hamas seemingly unaware. And the hamas ruled into israel with no resistance. How did that happen . Thank you, martin. Thank you for having me here this morning. Yesterday, hamas opened war on the state of israel and it chose to do so. Now in a religious to do so. Now in a religious houday to do so. Now in a religious holiday , while people were holiday, while people were making their way to synagogues to pray. And it shows to do so after a period in which israel tried to deescalate the situation and try to make the lives of people in gaza better. Lives of people in gaza better. But this time, this war is different. This is a different different. This is a different war. This war is in our streets. Hamas terrorists infiltrated our towns , our villages, our our towns, our villages, our homes , trying to shoot down an homes, trying to shoot down an elderly people , women, children elderly people, women, children. And, you know , so often and we. And, you know, so often and we can discuss those as well. We discussed the geopolitical strategic situation. With your permission this morning. I want to share also the small stories that make up the big story. To share also the small stories that make up the big story. An that make up the big story. An israeli family in their living room in a village. Israeli family in their living room in a village. This is on room in a village. This is on video and theyve got terrorists inside their living room. And inside their living room. And you can hear the shouts as the terrorists are shouting at the at the people. You can hear at the people. You can hear a little boy crying , mommy , what little boy crying, mommy, what are they going to do to us . Another video , this video , you another video, this video, you can see an israeli teenage girl. She has been dragged in the streets of gaza. Terrorists are streets of gaza. Terrorists are pulling her by their hair, by her hair, by her. Pulling her by their hair, by her hair, by her. Hair thank you. And you know, you know, you can see this girl. And you know, you know, you can see this girl. And she has can see this girl. And she has blood all over her body , blood all over her body, grabbing her by her hair. And the terrorists shove her into a car. And her eyes, petrified car. And her eyes, petrified eyes thinking what theyre going to do to me. These eyes stay to do to me. These eyes stay with you long after the video is gone. With you long after the video is gone. You talked about emotions gone. You talked about emotions. I have two girls. We all have children. And i ask you here this morning, what kind of people will commit these atrocities to other people , to atrocities to other people, to children , these are the children, these are the terrorists we are dealing with. Terrorists we are dealing with. And just think of a situation in which , god forbid , in the which, god forbid, in the streets of manchester or liverpool , you would have liverpool, you would have terrorists walking in your streets trying to shoot down civilians and to take into captivity as many people as they can. Children, we know that they have children. This is what we have children. This is what we are dealing with. Are dealing with. Oren, can i just ask we know that in the situations youve just described , people have been just described, people have been taken, children have been taken as hostages back into gaza to presumably be used as what we call human shields. As so when call human shields. As so when Benjamin Netanyahu says we will reduce gaza to rubble, how can you do that when you know youve got your own people being held hostage inside gaza . No nobody really wants out and out war, do we . Obviously, we will not and we cannot discuss military schemes right now on air. But i can tell you this. We will win this war. You this. We will win this war. We will win this war. But it will be with a very hefty price on this war has been going on for my entire life. If i remember it as a boy, you know, my children now saw this on their screens yesterday and we were deeply moved by what we saw. And i was having to explain to them, this has been going on of my life. Going on all of my life. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. You say you will win this war. What victory look war. What does victory look like . This has been going on now for like lifetimes, know, for like lifetimes, you know, thank you this very , very thank you for this very, very accurate question. Accurate question. Victory looks like having your family safe. I think this is what we would ask for. Your children. This is what i ask for. My daughters. This is what the people of israel is asking from the government of israel. And the government of israel will you answer . And will prevail. And this is what the government of the uk will do. And i think you mentioned earlier the Prime Minister sunaks strong words and President Bidens strong words. Absolutely because people see it for what it is. This is these atrocities are nothing that weve seen in the past. So yes , weve seen in the past. So yes, a victory will be removing the threat of hamas and allowing our families to live in peace and quiet. This time yesterday morning was when we first started to see the pictures and we were reporting on what was happening and we could barely believe our eyes because it seems like such a giant step backwards to be taking such actions against, you know, human being or human being seems so wrong. What was it like for you yesterday morning when you realised this was going on . We can see how moved you are today. As you said, youre a parent. What was it like for the rest of the people, your colleagues that you work with here in london . I cant describe it in words. Cant describe it in words. We all have family in israel. Ihave we all have family in israel. I have family in beersheba very close to where the terrorist launched this attack. But he launched this attack. But he rockets fell on on the houses and streets of tel aviv and the rockets fell in jerusalem. So we are all struggling with this. Are all struggling with this. But we are united in the sense that this is a war that we must win. And we will win. But i want to share with you a this is tragedies that we are dealing with. You know, there was in the kibbutz nirim. This is a kibbutz near gaza. This is an israeli uk family. And again, they hear family. And again, they hear their in their home and they hear gunshots and then they understand that the terrorists infiltrated their home. They run to the safe room. They hear the to the safe room. They hear the shootings inside their home. They hear the terrorists trying to break their way into their safe room and then the terrorists decide to set fire the apartment and they have a baby named kai. So what do they do . They take the baby and they do . They take the baby and they raise him as much as possible, high as much as possible to the window. This is what were deaung window. This is what were dealing with when in ive been to israel many times and love your country. Your country. As far as i remember, you still have national service, i think, in israel, dont you . So young people do their national service. So presumably now you are going to conscript those young people. So again, youve probably got family who may be involved, who may be called up to actually serve in some way. To actually serve in some way. How do you feel about that . Obviously , the families are obviously, the families are worried , but families are united worried, but families are united knowing that this is the right thing to know it. Its literally fighting for our homes. Thing to know it. Its literally fighting for our homes. Yes. And fighting for our homes. Yes. And fighting for our homes. Yes. And fighting for our families. Yes. Fighting for our families. Yes. So well do whatever it takes. And security will will restored. Well be restored and we will regain main peaceful and quiet and safety to our families. Oren , thank you for sharing oren, thank you for sharing such a moving set of stories with us this morning. I feel quite choked myself. Thank you. Quite choked myself. Thank you. Thank you. Yes thank you, indeed. Youre watching breakfast on gb news well be back with you in a welcome back at 9 18. Youre watching and listening to breakfast with anne and martin this morning. It does, because will know this. It does, because naturally marinades. Naturally it marinades. Like when you its like anything when you when something and have when you make something and have it it always it the next day, it always tastes whether its tastes better whether its a stew, its a curry or stew, whether its a curry or whatever it may be. Oh, is that why . Oh, is that why . Because course all of the. Because of course all of the. Yeah. Yeah. On marinating and carries on marinating and even some people marinate food and it in the and then they put it in the freezer and you keep it in the freezer. So a frozen curry carries on maturing does it . Its essence to it. Its its got an essence to it. Its like a cheese or fine wine. Like a cheese or a fine wine. What have we got here . Right. So what weve got here in front of us, basically, its all vegetarian starters. Ive vegetarian for starters. Got halloumi. Then weve got a traditional daal just traditional daal. Daal is just a lentils boiled and then just tempered top , which is tempered at the top, which is just a few cheeky spices with oil thrown on the top. And oil just thrown on the top. And then then then finished off and then youve chickpea curry. In youve got a chickpea curry. In the they have the punjab, they have a breakfast the morning, breakfast in the morning, chickpeas is so healthy for you. And you can see the curry leaves that are in there. Its just stunning, stunning. The spices in that its fantastic. Its my freshly ground its my own freshly ground spices. I grind my own spices myself. Well, this is what i was going to ask you next. Well, obviously , as advocate well, obviously, as i advocate for cooking at home, make it yourself. It does have a smell better, doesnt it . It smells better. It smells better. Okay. Whats the easiest one of those dishes to make . Of those dishes to make . Well, im going to tell you the last dish because i never got around to it. And this is the curveball. Brown them or clarify do you brown them or clarify them . It doesnt make no difference. Right. Just have a go. If you brown it, it makes the curry more brown. Yeah. Just like a stew if you dont brown it you got a lighter curry just have got a lighter curry so just have a you can go into the a go it then you can go into the realms of trying out some people blend it some people boil it beforehand. People get it. Beforehand. Some people get it. Its borderline burnt. Its literally borderline burnt. Maybe this lunchtime. Or maybe this evening. Absolutely. Onions. Then what . Start with onions. Then what . Start with onions. Then what . Two things. The holy the next two things. The holy trinity because goes trinity. Because everything goes in threesomes , i in threes. Food, threesomes, i call them ginger and garlic, ginger and garlic, ginger and garlic. They get garlic. So once they get together marriage, they are together as a marriage, they are just its a party just like, its a party happening, great. Them blend does it m atter . Does matter . Does it matter . I need to have a go at it. Whether you grate it, blend it, crush it, slice whatever. Just have slice it, whatever. Just have a go and thats the basis. Then you throw in your protein or your lentils or your or your meat or whatever you meat or fish or whatever you want have a play want and just have a play around. Can coconut around. You can use coconut milk, could plain water, milk, you could use plain water, tomato, you know, already tinned tomatoes. With that, tomatoes. And then with that, even just added salt and even if you just added salt and pepper stirred it pepper with that and stirred it around pretty much got around you pretty much got a basic yeah yeah.
