Some moderate shrapnel was seen in the south west of this location, about four miles away, away from where we are. The situation in the south, in the gaza strip. We know that the rafah Border Crossing between egypt and gaza has remained closed. However the us are hopeful that it will reopen and they said so two hours ago. A spokesperson in cairo reaffirming that they are hoping that it will open at some point this afternoon. But so far no good news has come from the south. At the same time in gaza city, the un said that some of its fuel trucks had been taken from its facility in the north. We dont know who did that, but that reports just come in the last hour. Theres a realistic possibility that that was taken by north as they by hamas in the north as they seek to use those fuel supplies for their own ends. But theres for their own ends. But theres also been further extremely troubling developments in the north where more artillery fire has gone from northern israel into southern lebanon as the israeli war cabinet says do not test us to iran. Iran of course, has been sabre rattling extensively over the last three days, in particular with its foreign minister meeting with the leader of Lebanese Hezbollah. That terrorist organisation that more volatile and violent terrorist organisation in lebanon with greater capabilities than hamas , greater capabilities than hamas, really reaffirming the support of the tehran regime towards its proxies in the region and in to particular Lebanese Hezbollah fighters who are engaging with the idf in southern lebanon and northern israel. And there is skirmishing along the border with syria. But apart from that, at the moment, i dont see any state intervention into this conflict of obviously the elephant in the room is iran, which supplies hezbollah with its weaponry. But the fact that the americans have moved a hugely powerful Carrier Battle Group into the Eastern Mediterranean and are sending another one, i think is a warning for all others malcontents who might wish to get involved to stay their hand because they cant compete with the usa. Especially i say especially i mean the british hostages supposedly at least ten of them that are in there at the moment. It all appears to have gone quite quiet about all that. Well, its very difficult to talk about hostages because im very conscious that many people who are directly affected by it, friends and family , find this a friends and family, find this a most difficult time. However, most difficult time. However, i dont my personal view is that the rescue of the hostages is not the primary aim of the israeli soon to be happening invasion. The primary aim is to invasion. The primary aim is to eradicate hamas. The problem with hostage rescue is, first of all, you have to know where they are and then you have to work out how youre going to get to them. Now, ive absolutely no doubt that all sorts of special forces organisations from all sorts countries are sorts of Different Countries are either or working to either in theatre or working to be in theatre to sort this problem out. It wouldnt surprise if the seas were surprise me if the seas were somewhere together with the American Special forces and others, but the big problem is where are these people and can they be extracted safely . You mentioned there that you think that the sas might be involved in some way. Can you elaborate on that . I suspect there might be either based in cyprus at the moment or perhaps in one of the royal fleet auxiliaries which were sending to the Eastern Mediterranean, or indeed therell be israel because therell be an israel because theres great cooperation between special forces of what i might call the western nations. Bit of gaza . Well, that is, you know, a very a very pertinent question. And there is no doubt there are people in gaza that dont want to leave that for their own ideological reasons. They dont want to cede ground to israel. They dont want to leave that city. Theres those that want to stand and fight alongside these Hamas Terrorists. There are others who simply are unable to leave because elderly , infirm in leave because elderly, infirm in hospital with serious ailments. Hospital with serious ailments. And there are others, lets be honest, who are being prevented from leaving by hamas. Now, from leaving by hamas. Now, there has been, according to the idf, multiple incidents that they have recorded from their drone footage that shows vehicles across the road south from gaza city trying to block people from going. Now, clearly, when youre talking about hundreds of thousands of people , hundreds of thousands of people, its difficult for hamas , a its difficult for hamas, a terrorist militia, effectively , terrorist militia, effectively, to try to stop all of these people leaving. But there are efforts to do that, some staying willingly , others being forced willingly, others being forced to stay. I find it absolutely bizarre that egypt is not being more forthcoming, supposedly , we forthcoming, supposedly, we look, by the way, on our television screens, if youre watching us on tv or online, we are now taking live images of gaza where theres the occasional smoke occasional plume of smoke that comes there. We also comes up from there. We also have a couple of other live shots. One from the lebanon border as well, where there could potentially be more action, almost definitely will be more action. So israel will face a fight on at least two fronts there. And we also have a couple of shots that well bring to you a little bit later on from inside gaza itself in khan younis , which is where a lot of younis, which is where a lot of people have been gathering outside hospital there. So but outside a hospital there. So but mark, yeah, it does appear that no matter what happens, israel is going to face a battle on a few fronts. And of course, hamas have tunnelled in. Yes so in the last hour, weve heard from Benjamin Netanyahu speaking at the opening of the parliaments winter assembly, urging his people to prepare for the continuation of the war. He also went on to warn iran and hezbollah not to test us, really reaffirm saying the situation there in the north where there is continued skirmishes on either side of the border, as the idf and hezbollah trade rockets and small arms fire and artillery in an escalating situation. Even the prime situation. Even the Prime Minister also went on to say that the countrys efforts to recovering some 199 hostages from the gaza strip would be relentless and that they are committed to that action that is something that they will try all they can to achieve. But also in they can to achieve. But also in the last half hour, a hamas affiliated Radio Station in the gaza strip has reported that the israeli side has shelled the rafah crossing. Obviously this is an unconfirmed unverified report. Weve seen some footage from the live stream of the rafah crossing, which does so show an explosion there. But obviously, we cannot confirm at this time the cause and the origin of that shell. It does origin of that shell. It does come, however, in the context of the last 48 hours where there was an explosion on a convoy heading south down one of the two main supply routes from north gaza to the south. After the on civilians to the idf called on civilians to flee the area in the north. Now, hamas alleged that the idf carried out an airstrike on the convoy. The idf, of course, very vehemently denied that and said that there was no Israeli Air Force activity on that location at the time. Some analysts who specialise in open Source Research i have reviewed the footage and said that there is no frame of a projectile hitting that truck when hamas claimed it was struck by the israeli side. So conflicting reports in a very fluid and dangerous and uncertain situation on the rafah crossing where tens of thousands, at least have gathered, hoping to get into hoping to get into egypt. Story while on the other side, the egyptians are waiting for confirmation. Indeed negotiating with the israelis and the americans about whether or not humanitarian aid can enter from the south because the situation in the south is as the un say, untenable. They say the spectre untenable. They say the spectre of death is looming over that situation. Theres extremely dangerous and people there are desperate for some form of the blockade to be lifted so that the spiralling humanitarian situation does not worsen the israeli side need more civilians to move from the north to the south so that they can continue their bombardment of the north on hamas military capabilities and prepare the ground for that likely and imminent Ground Invasion. They cannot do that. Invasion. They cannot do that. They cannot expect civilians to move south so long as the south of the gaza strip remains so dangerous, remains so deadly, and humanitarian and is a grave humanitarian situation. So a very tense situation. So a very tense scenario here in israel and in the gaza strip. An escalating situation in the north, a worsening situation on the south and the and Benjamin Netanyahu saying prepare for a long war. The continuation of the war is ongoing. Yeah, prepare for a long war. Now, charlie, youre obviously at a hospital there. I understand that they are treating people already at that hospital. Jewish Israeli Military casualties. Is that how bad is that situation . I mean , bad is that situation . I mean, were not actually hearing a huge amount of that. Its all very much about whats about to happen, whats going to happen on now. On the ground now. But casualties mounting already casualties are mounting already right . Casualties are mounting already right . Thats right. Hundreds of soldiers have been this facility been treated at this facility since october the seventh. The attacks that happened in southern israel by Hamas Terrorists , theyre referring to terrorists, theyre referring to it here israel as black it here in israel as black saturday, one of the worst days in the countrys history. The start the worst violence start of the worst violence theyve seen here years. Theyve seen for here 50 years. Today, visited patients in today, we visited patients in the burns unit. Many civilians were burned in their homes in some of the kibbutz and the small communities in the south. When hamas launched missiles and set fire to homes. As peoples as people sheltered in them, weve seen some appalling footage of what happened down there, people really suffering in ways that i cant really describe on television. Just the worst injuries. But as horrible as the situation is here at this medical facility, as deal medical facility, as they deal with and appalling with those grave and appalling injuries, theyre preparing for the worst to come. They say that this hospital is on a war footing, that they know that with this imminent likely with this imminent and likely invasion the medics were invasion on all the medics were speaking here, saying that speaking to here, saying that the to because the worst is to come because as more fatalities will if more fatalities will occur if and israel invades the gaza strip. And he was saying that youve really got to take it very slowly and indeed any ground operation involve intensive urban fighting is very, very difficult indeed. And i think mr barak , former general barak barak, former general barak really has a point in saying that this will have to be phased. If you rush at it. Patrick, the different forces will get confused. Its terribly difficult for Ground Forces to communicate date when youre going in in urban operations. I saw it in the early years in 73, in west belfast, in derry , where in west belfast, in derry, where british troops had to be stopped from being communicating with each other from one street to the other because they then get confused. They get confused by the gunfire and they think that, you know , a friend becomes foe you know, a friend becomes foe and foe becomes friend. And thats going to be multiplied so many times with what were likely to see in northern. And also, robert, just finally and quickly with you, the israelis will be confronted by an enemy that actually welcomes us death, wont they . These are the kind of people that to die for that that want to die for a higher power and a higher cause, which with it, i imagine, poses its own problems. And what this comes down to is that we havent skilled our own population and that lies at the door, not only of this government, which party has been in power for 30 years, but it goes back beyond that as well. And effectively weve relied on other peoples skills, on importing other peoples skills orindeed importing other peoples skills or indeed a lot of unskilled labour simply because theyre willing to do the work that some of our people arent willing to do. And that is the problem that we have now. We have to do two things. First of all, as far as unskilled labour goes, we have to make sure that at our own population does it and if it doesnt do it, that it doesnt get paid for sitting at home doing nothing. But as far as the skilling goes , thats a very skilling goes, thats a very different matter. It means the government should have already made an assessment of the level of skills and the numbers that we need in things like health, education, whatever it might be. And that we should be planning to train our own workforce. To to train our own workforce. To oh, simply rely on bringing in skills from outside, then yes, of course , of course. Nothings of course, of course. Nothings going to go down. Why would it . No, indeed. Category c, which are secure, but not requiring the degree of security which as and bs do. And also i brought in a prison ship which labour derided as the hulks and then kept for another nine years as its always possible to find extra accommodation if you have to. And as for deport ing foreign prisoners as you have to be slightly careful for this reason , you need to be certain that if theyre imprisoned because they have committed offences in this country , that theyre not just country, that theyre not just going to go back to be released in their own country, but that theyre going to carry out a sentence there. Now, usually the sentences are harsher than ours, but sometimes times theyre softer. So they could actually get an advantage from being deported. And so you have to deported. And so you have to balance things properly. Its not easy. Im not telling the government its easy. What i am saying to the government is that they have sat on their hands and done nothing for far too long. Suppose some people might i suppose some people might think, well, look, i dont really whether or not they really care whether or not they serve massive sentence abroad serve a massive sentence abroad as not here in as long as theyre not here in britain taxpayers are paying as long as theyre not here in briitheir taxpayers are paying as long as theyre not here in briitheir ta atayers are paying as long as theyre not here in briitheir ta at hiss are paying as long as theyre not here in briitheir ta at his majestysng for their time at his majestys pleasure , well then pleasure, well then youre rather dismissing victims rather dismissing the victims and youre saying, well, it doesnt matter what they suffered, you know, as as suffered, you know, as long as we rid of these people, we just get rid of these people, we just get rid of these people, we if theyre going we dont care if theyre going to their country. To go free in their own country. And think that does matter and i think that does matter to the victims. So as i say, its not easy, but it can be done. Im not saying you dont deport anybody. Im just saying there are things you have to take into account. And yes, that will free up some space, but its not going to anything its not going to meet anything like size of the challenge. Like the size of the challenge. And for that, we need new prison places and we need them quickly. And they should have already been and they been put in hand and they havent been because jeremy hunt doesnt to spend. He is doesnt want to spend. He is absolutely fixated on not spending. Youve heard him say spending. Youve heard him say very recently, no tax cuts. He cant afford it. Ignoring the fact that tax cuts themselves drive growth. He is ultra cautious. Its like a boy scout with some pocket money in it. And if i spend it on this, its not there anymore. Rather than do i need this a lot and we do need prison places. Need prison places. Yeah. And especially if were seeing some of the prisoners breaking out of those prisons anyway, in no small part due to staffing issues and overcrowding that at some point it does appear to be a slightly false economy. And just just quickly and lastly, if thats all right. Ive got to get your views on what we saw today. Rishi sunak and keir starmer in the house of commons speaking as a united front, about how theyre front, saying about how theyre going back israel. Theyre going to back israel. Theyre condemning going to back israel. Theyre condenstuff. How do you see of this stuff. How do you see this playing out . But sometimes attributing it to the uk government, saying thats what is proscribed by them and of course the united the eu as well. But today, though, we are well. Because were talking about a situation which is affecting lots of people , all their lots of people, all their families and friends. Yes. Well obviously, the British Jewish Community has been quite affected by what weve seen over the past eight weeks, since last weekend. And weve seen absolutely horrific scenes from israel committed by hamas, which is designated by the British Government. Other governments, as a terror organisation. The acts terror organisation. The acts which have occurred fall very clearly under any reasonable definition of terrorism. So they definition of terrorism. So they are absolutely horrific. I dont are absolutely horrific. I dont think i need to go into the depths. I think people are already very aware of what has occurred and theres been a lot of disappointment. If not outrage from a lot of us in the Jewish Community, because the bbc refuses to call them what they are , which is terrorists. They are, which is terrorists. And we feel that thats at the very least mistaken, if not at a disservice to their their their listeners and to the Jewish Community in this country. Weve heard from the bbc who say, well, actually the role of journalists is to tell a story , journalists is to tell a story, but also allow people at home, including yourself, to make up your own mind, to describe what your own mind, to describe what you would say this group is. What do you say to that . Thats what theyve said. Thats what they said. But in any kind of journalism, youre always going to have some some aspect of presenting a certain light because othennise they would just be stating these are the fatalities. This is what this organisation called this, this organisation called this, this other organisation is called. When youre presenting news, youre always presented in some kind of way which has some kind of implications in terms of value judgements and its understandable. The bbc is a national broadcaster, they have impartiality is very important, but there is no reasonable way in which one could not call hamas a terrorist organisation. The bbc themselves have said that nobody could doubt the horrific nature of what hamas has done and still theyve theyve called plenty of other organisations and individuals, terrorists time and time again. Terrorists time and time again. It just seems strange that they, when it comes to these acts which are the most the comparable to hamas is comparable to hamas is comparable to hamas is comparable to isis in the sense of the horrific nature of their crimes. And this and, and last weekend saw the most jews killed in a single day since the holocaust. It seems very strange that considering all of that , that considering all of that, they would not consider it to be an impartial and objective to call them the terrorists that they are. What do you hope to get out of this gathering or protest, shall we say . Do you hope theres a theres a change at all . Because there have been pretty strong on their line when it comes to this issue . Well i think theyve already shown that they have some understanding of they have some understanding of the antenna ability of their position. Theyve already started in some segments saying that hamas is designated a terrorist organisation by by Different Countries , but they still cant countries, but they still cant quite say it themselves. So if theres one thing we would like out of this is that the bbc and other news media that arent currently doing so call hamas the terrorists, that they are. We think that its very reasonable. We think that there is no reason to be afraid of being seen as biased, because what we do be biased against a terrorist organisation that massacred over now 13 over 1300 israelis, men , women and israelis, men, women and children, kidnapped them, raped women and burned people alive, burned children alive next to their parents. Theres no real reason not to call them that. And its so, so if theres one thing that we hope is that they change their position on this. Change their position on this.
