Blanket Loan Forgiveness, Loan Subsidies, and Failed Job-Training Programs Are Not the Answer to Worker Shortages and Inflation

Education plays a critical role in developing workers’ knowledge, skills, and talents—as well as in matching these with new and emerging technologies. As a key factor in determining what and how much workers produce and earn, education is a fundamental component of economic growth and of personal well-being. Poor government policies have created an inefficient and monopolistic higher education system with sky-high tuition costs and a growing skills gap, and recent policies enacted in the name of containing the COVID-19 pandemic have created an unprecedented labor shortage.
