Hurricane irma is pummelling puerto rico. Nearly 950,000 are without power. Also dealing with flash flooding. The National WeatherService Warns of a high threat to life and property. Irma is blamed for at least three deaths so far in the caribbean. It december mapted the island of barbuda, damaging or destroying every building. Maggie rulli has the latest. Reporter Hurricane Irma is tearing through the cribbual with 180mile an hour wind. It is really ripping right now. Ive covered hurricanes for more than 25 years. This is unlike anything i have ever seen. Reporter the streets of tourist hot spot st. Martin under water. The airport reportedly destroyed. Were here outside, shaking the doors. Reporter on the small island of barbuda, seen in the center of irmas eye, the Prime Minister says some 90 of the islands buildings are destroyed. In puerto rico, potentially the worst storm to hit the island in a century. Now florida is gearing up for a direct hit. Never had a cat five. Never experienced it and it is just scary. So far more than 1,000 flights have been cancelled to and from miami this weekend. The lines for water wrap around the block. More than 25 of gas stations in Miami Dade County are already out of fuel. Gas is running out everywhere right now. Floridas governor says he is working to get more fuel, and President Trump has already called a state of emergency for florida, puerto rico and the u. S. Virgin islands. The latest path has irma approaching florida saturday and hitting miami as a category four hurricane. By sunday possibly making landfall across florida sunday evening and continuing to weaken to a category two by monday evening. This is one of the most dangerous, but hurricane jose not far behind, threatening the Leeward Islands and hurricane katia in the gulf is expect to make landfall in vera cruz. The urban search and rescue Task Force Four barely made it out of texas helping with harvey damage when they got a new indicakatie utehs. Nearly 30 people are already on the road, having left houston monday. We caught oakland chief james bower as the crew fuelled. We headed towards home and things changed and we turned around. We made it to new mexico and we got a phone call late last night. The four rescue boats and two zodiacs never made it back to the oakland warehouse. The shelves are already empty because the equipment has been sent out. It is definitely uncommon to have this quick of a turn around. Reporter more than 50 other Task Force Members fly out tomorrow. They will stage in alabama until receiving mission order, enfazed by receiving backtoback deployments. Theres a sense of honor and were honored to be able to help people. Reporter firefighters come from 18 different agencies and there are civilian members. One of the great things about having that many agencies involved is that the impact on any one agency is minimal. What a flight it must have been, flying in between bands of a devastating hurricane. Delta says the flight was completely safe, with the pilots working in tandem with dispatchers and airline meteorologists to chart the flight plan. The medical Examiners Office says the victims all were in their 80s and 90s and found alone inside their homes. No 911 calls were made by them asking for help. San francisco hit 106 degrees last friday, setting an alltime record high. During the heat wave, the citys 911 system received more than 2400 calls for help, doubling the average volume. That overwhelmed city ambulances and slowed response times to more than 10 minutes for lifethreatening call also and 17minutes for nonlifethreatening call also. Mutual aid was called in from sacramento. Jerry downs was struck by his own vehicle in farng lot of ingrid b. Lacy middle school where downs was the band director. Downs but he was ultimately pronounced dead at the hospital. There are now flowers at the parking lot where teacher jerry downs was hit by his own vehicle. Pacifica police say it somehow roll away before it struck and killed him. School staff was shocked when they heard what happened. Basically he his car crushed him or his van ran him over, something. He was trying to stop it or something. Reporter downs was the band director at ingrid b. Lacy middle school and ocean shore elementary, a position he held for 15 years. I was like, i want to be that guy or something. Reporter students looked up to him and parents admired him for his passion for music and devotion to the students. He spent so much time after school with the kids. He did competition, marching band, concert band, he did drum line. He spent an awful lot of his personal time. Reporter and if students didnt have the money, downs would never hesitate to help. Whatever they needed, you know, for marching band, whatever instruments, he would buy instruments, he would buy uniforms, he would buy shoes. He was a generous guy. Authorities are searching for two inmates who walked away from a federal prison camp in dublin. Officials say Anna Armstrong and Irene Mitchell left the minimum security facility at 7 15 monday evening. Both were serving time on federal drug charges. They dont have a history of violence, but anybody that escapes from a Prison Institution we consider to be dangerous because theyre on the run and theyre considered fugitives. Earlier today, mitchell was spotted in rural livermore. According to the Alameda County sheriffs office. They tweeted this photograph of her covering her face when someone tried taking a shot of her. I always like to say that i am more than a daca recipient. I shine light to my mothers story. Reporter Gabriella Garcia cruz was three years old when her mother brought her to the United States illegally. She has always known daca was not a longterm solution for immigrants. If theres anything that powerful that came out of this is the opportunity to unite as a community, the opportunity to say it is not just 800,000, it is actually 11 million undocumented people including my mom. Reporter she felt the support of the community at the vigil. Not going to sundend them ba somewhere else. Most are educated and employed. They add so much to our country. Because we respect the dignity of every human person and they have the right to be part of this great country. Reporter 15 states and the district of columbia filed a lawsuit to stop President Trumps plan to end daca. San jose and Santa Clara County are planning litigation. A Santa Clara University law professor said they could cite prejudice. People challenging daca might point to statements by the president in the past about how he views mexicans or immigrants generally. Michael bennet hired attorney against his case against las vegas police. Goodell released a statement saying he represents the best of the nfl. His brother got emotional about the incident. We have some high level clouds as you check out the moisture coming in from what was once Tropical Storm lidia. Weve been seeing numerous thunderstorms in the Sierra Nevada and it has been going on all afternoon and evening. Obviously a fire danger heading towards tomorrow and we see more of that, but that tropical moisture is keeping us on the muggy side. Humid in some areas. You will notice the dew points are in the low 60s from oakland to san jose right now. But that tropical moisture did provide a treat in the sky from our emeryville camera. Look at the sunset. Is that spectacular or what . You see the high level cloeds, the fog down below. We are just going to keep you entertained with some beautiful sunsets because this one was equally gorgeous from our south bay camera here. Sun went down at 7 31 and there was a nice burst of color as the sun was setting. The clouds were rolling in. It was a cooler day today. Were going to keep the cooling trend going as we head towards tomorrow, and that tropical moisture may actually bring us more than just clouds tomorrow.
