Racist . Republicans and democrats weighing in on the matter despite the denial. He said these hatefilled things, and he said them repeatedly. The fallout this morning. And mega winner, the young man claiming the giant jackpot, 451 million and hes only 20 years old. What he is saying about his rich future. Hey, good morning and happy saturday. Millions of you waking up to weather that is changing by the minute right now. Yeah, a major storm that carved a path of destruction across the country is moving out as we come on the air. Behind it a rush of cold air so if youre feeling warm air right now, youre most likely in for a rude awakening. As this storm moved through the midwest and northeast, it brought with it a treacherous cocktail of heavy snow, freezing rain and sleet all of which combined to cause highway accidents and closures. The northeast dealing with major flooding. This morning we want you to look at this video out of jefferson county, new york. Chunks of ice just washing up on the road. Not what you want to see. And as we mentioned, after the floods, the deep freeze. Look at this map of the frigid temperatures about to set in and rob is tracking it all. Rob, good morning. Good morning, guys. Be careful what you wish for. Big warmup this week that obviously is causing its own set of problems. This storm, you see the cold air where the rain and sleet is turning over to snow. Thats where the frigid arctic air is and this storm coming a week after the big blizzard but going coast to coast and really an entirely different beast. Another massive winter storm slamming the east dumping snow, sleet and rain creating dangerous conditions from the Tennessee Valley through new england. Outside nashville yesterday a massive pileup involving dozens of semi trucks and cars shutting down the westbound lane of i40 and nearly killing Walter Kohler and his wife. My wife screamed that somebody hit us in the back and push you had us to the side and another semi that couldnt stop and a headon collision and smashed us from the front so got hit from the back and the front. Reporter overnight in ohio state and kentucky, heavy creating whiteout conditions on the roads there causing multiple accidents. And near pittsburgh, rising temperatures, melting snow and relentless rain causing flooding and overtaking roadways. The conditions are only worsening. Reporter this timelapsed video in upstate new york showing what an ice jam can do rising the river quickly before the ice flows downstream. Dangerous conditions continue after the storm as a blast of arctic air sends temperatures plummeting over 30 degrees. A winter storm now in parts of pittsburgh as this 12hour loop shows you where the moisture is going. The heavy rain across boston is going to move out quickly as will most of this winter precip but its the temperatures that will be shocking. 60 is what it feels like 24 boston. Just down the road in binghamton feels like 5 below zero. You get an idea of the temperature gradient. When it comes in, it will be a shock to the system. Windchills today will be in the single numbers across much of the area and then going in tomorrow morning talking about temperatures and windchills much like they were just a week ago. So, winter, guys, is back. Dan and paula. That warm front lasted five minutes, but i did enjoy it, rob. Thank you. It is january. It is. Now to the breaking story overnight. Nge terrifyi moments a Greyhound Bus when a man pulled out a gun. Yeah, that led to a highspeed chase across state lines. This morning were hearing from some of the 50 people who were on board. Abcs Stephanie Ramos is in washington on the story. Stephanie, good morning. Reporter dan and paula, good morning. Passengers on that bus said they were absolutely terrified and they didnt know what to do when this guy started saying he was going to kill them, and they were even more confused when the driver of the bus didnt stop even after rolling over spike strips. A male hispanic has a gun in his hand on a Greyhound Bus. Reporter overnight, a horrifying ride for dozens of passengers on a Greyhound Bus. A male hispanic, short black hair making threats that hes going to kill everybody on the Greyhound Bus. He has a. 32 in his hand. Reporter police receiving reports of an armed Man Threatening to kill other passengers as the bus traveled from milwaukee to chicago around 10 00 friday night. Police from both states joining the highspeed pursuit shutting down the highway in both directions as they closed in on the bus. Tires are starting to shed. Reporter the bus finally coming to a stop 45 miles in the trip in wadsworth, illinois. All 50 passengers escorted off the bus safely. He said he was going to kill us, that he was going to put a bullet in our head. Reporter the suspect was taken into custody, dozens of police cars blocking traffic as police investigate. This morning, state police tell abc news thankfully no one was hurt. Everybody was okay. I mean, because you dont know what to do in those kind of situations so you just do the best you can. Reporter so scary. That man was arrested and the passengers are just thankful that it all ended the way it did. Paula, dan. Stephanie, thank you. Politics now and the president is waking up this morning at maralago where he will spend this long mlk day weekend and, once again, he is dealing with a racially charged controversy. Republicans and democrats are weighing in on reports that the president used profane and disparaging language while describing countries that send us immigrants including many countries in africa and haiti. Abcs david wright is on the story for us from West Palm Beach for us. Good morning, david. Reporter good morning, paula and dan. President trump is on the defensive over those vulgar comments hes allegedly made behind closed doors at a white house meeting on immigration reform. The president has offered a vague denial but others who were there in the room insist that he did say it and to say this is causing an uproar would be an understatement. Today we gather in the white house to honor the memory of a Great American hero, the reverend dr. Martin luther king jr. Reporter right after signing a proclamation celebrating dr. Martin luther king jr. s legacy, President Trump faced a barrage of questions. Mr. President , did you refer to african nations as [ bleep ] nations . Mr. President , are you a racist . Mr. President , are you a racist . Reporter trump ignored them. The president denies uttering the derogatory language attributed to him in connection to haiti but not in connection with countries in africa. He said these hatefilled things, and he said them repeatedly. Reporter senator dick durbin was the only democrat in that Oval Office Meeting on immigration. He said put me down for wanting more europeans to come to this country. Why dont we get more people from norway . That was exactly what the president said. Reporter senator Lindsey Graham was there too. The president was very gracious. Reporter initially graham kept private about what trump allegedly said behind closed doors but now admits he spoke up. The president and all those attending the meeting know what i said and how i feel, he said. For him to confront the president as he did literally sitting next to him took extraordinary political courage and i respect him for it. Reporter during the Campaign Trump spoke in more flattering terms about haiti. The haitian people deserve better. Together we will build a relationship based on mutual respect. Reporter but he prides himself on tough talk on issues like immigration famously saying this about mexico. Theyre bringing drugs. Theyre bringing crime. Theyre rapists and some i assume are good people. Reporter some republicans are willing to give trump the benefit of the doubt. I think he has an unconventional way of communicating and hes a diamond with a number of rough edges. Reporter now the president invokes dr. Kings dream as a vision he shares. He tweeted, great opportunity missed. Too bad. This is obviously a delicate issue. The language attributed to the president has ruffled feathers not only in this country but around the world, especially in those countries that he seems to take a dim view of. Ambassadors are being called in and dressed down and the African Union is calling for an apology to africans and to people of african descent around the world. Paula and dan. Yeah, definitely put us in an uncomfortable position. David, before leaving for florida the president had his First Physical since taking office. What can you tell us about the results as well as the physician who examined him . Reporter well, the physician is not that colorful park avenue gastroenterologist who said during the campaign that he would be the healthiest president ever. This is a rear admiral at walter reed hospital. He was actually president obamas physician too. The top line result is that the physical went extremely well and that the president is in Exceptional Health and we can expect more details on tuesday. David, thank you. David wright reporting from florida. Lets bring in abc news political analyst matthew dowd. Matthew, good morning. Good morning. So weve heard from Lindsey Graham and we heard in David Wrights piece that lindsay was in the room. Paul ryan, the speaker of the house, has also weighed in calling the president s comments, quote, unhelpful. What do you think overall about the way republicans are handling this . Well, paul ryan referring to what many are interpreting as racist remarks as unhelpful or as unfortunate is like we talk about a hangnail or me forgetting a hat on a sunny day. I think if the gop leaders in washington were a pasta and you were cooking them, they would not be al dente. They are as far as from firm on this on the president as possible, and im amazed at the gravitational pull of planet trump, how all these gop leaders have lost their principles after theyve gotten pulled into that planet. And it really seemed that democrats and republicans were making a lot of progress on immigration and daca, which expires in march. How big of a setback is this . I think its huge. You know, ive described before i think the president is a bit like wile e. Coyote. Every time he thinks hes going to have great success, he blows himself up in the middle of this. As you recall, the best of the presidency of last year is when he made that deal on the debt ceiling with nancy pelosi and Chuck Schumer and he was headed towards another deal on this on immigration, which the last two president s hadnt been able to do but the president seems to have thrown that off course by just mere of his facts of a meeting and the comments he made at the oval office. Just go back to those comments for a second. Im not sure they will move the needle in terms of his base of support in america. But how does all of this affect us overseas . Do you think there are global serious global repercussions . I think there was already questions about the president s leadership around the world as we saw last year, the president , this president , President Trumps confidence that International Leaders had in this president had dropped dramatically from what it was with president obama. And what this does is again reduces our ability to have moral authority in the world on many issues, human rights and keep in mind, dan and paula, that there are almost 6,000 troops in africa that we depend on and are in conjunction with those countries to fight terrorism. Thats put in jeopardy. All right. Our wile e. Coyote and pasta aficionado this morning. You never know where well go with matthew dowd. All right. Thanks, matt. We appreciate it. Sounds awesome. Bye. We do want to turn now to the flu which is considered an epidemic now. Every state except hawaii is reporting widespread illness and the new numbers from the cdc are out this morning. Those numbers include seven pediatric deaths reported this week, reported this week, and that brings the total to 20, and the hospitalization rate for children under 5 doubling. Our chief medical correspondent jen ashton is here with us this morning. Good morning. Good morning, you guys. Good morning, jen. So were at peak season. Right. What else are we learning about this cdc report . The cdc put out their weekly report yesterday as they always do on fridays, and in the last week theyve reported that we are now at epidemic level. That we expected because the numbers are going up. This is the worst flu season since 2014 2015, and the cdc has said this is really the first time that on some measure, some parameters, the whole country is really seeing similar levels of activity. The good news is that we may be at or close to peak. We will know that probably in a couple of weeks but, again, weve heard some tragic deaths reported this week. Most occurring in people in the vulnerable age group over 65 but to make no mistake, be very clear, this flu is taking the lives of young previously Healthy People as it always does and its tragic. Its no joke, but theres a lot of misinformation about the vaccine. Some people may hear the vaccine is not super effective this year and say, well, i dont need to get it. What do you say to them . Dan, its part of what i call the flu having a pr problem because people either think the flu is just a bad cold or they hear correctly that the vaccine is not that effective so why should i bother . Both of those things are untrue. We do have some data that suggests that if someone gets the flu gets the vaccine rather earlier in the season and then later gets influenza, they will have lessened severity, reduced risk of pneumonia, other complications and deaths, especially in the pediatric age group, so i want to be very clear, if you have not been vaccinated, there is still vaccine. It is important to get vaccinated. Even a vaccine effectiveness of 30 is better than 0 . And real quick theres that theory that when you get the flu vaccine youre actually getting live cultures of the flu. There is no live virus in the vaccine, so that is impossible. All right. Dr. Jen, thank you. Appreciate it. Were going to turn now to the devastating mudslides in california. The death toll growing now to 18. The victims as young as 3 years old. So devastating. This morning rescuers are searching for survivors through mud covered neighborhoods and abcs Marci Gonzalez joins us from montecito with more on their efforts. Good morning to you, marci. Reporter dan, paula, good morning. There is still so much mud, so much water out there that its hard to picture that this is a major freeway. You can see crews out here working 24 hours a day on alert that more victims might still be found here. With several people still missing this morning, crews are out relentlessly searching. Trying to peel away some of the layers to get into some of the voids. Reporter saying while time is running out to find survivors, they are not giving up hope just yet. We continue to operate in a rescue mode. We have completed the primary searches. Reporter more than 1,200 First Responders navigating dangers in the debris. Yeah, mike, how far down the wash are you . Reporter severed gas lines and swimming pools completely concealed by layers of quicksandlike mud. This is the worst thing ive ever seen. Reporter Officials Say every home in montecito has now been searched. In one friday they found joseph bleckel, the 18th victim of this weeks mudslides. Its hurting all of us. Its very heartbreaking. Reporter among the victims friends of amil garcia. You see down there is my car. Reporter who says his own life was narrowly spared as he drove on the 101 freeway tuesday morning. It was a wall of mud and debris coming down. So i step on the brakes and next thing i know, i get hit on the right side. A tree or a tree trunk pinned me down. Reporter garcia crawling out of the window of his suv wading through waist high mud to safety. We just consider ourselves lucky that we were able to escape and get out of it alive. Reporter so lucky. You can see his range rover still submerged there, and with so much left to clean up and the ongoing search for the missing, were told this interstate will remain closed indefinitely. Dan and paula. Such devastation out there. Our hearts go out to all those still missing. Thank you very much, marci. And we want to move things along and send things over to rob marciano. And that storm, whatever created those mudslides in california is moving across the country and hitting the east coast. Not every California Storm makes it over the rockies and to the east coast. That tells you how powerful it was and has evolved obviously, but scenes like this across parts of the northeast, ice floes and ice jams, this one in meadville, pennsylvania, between erie and pittsburgh, sometimes these get jammed up and the rivers rise quickly and create flooding problems, but that is a surreal sight. If youre a skier, we havent had much snow across the rockies. Breckenridge enjoying fresh powder yesterday and got out there and ripped it up. We got another storm system coming to the Pacific Northwest here. A couple will miss up in British Columbia and alaska. But a third one that comes in monday morning will bring rain along the coast, a little bit of wind and high elevation snows and will get maybe down into lake tahoe and a couple other systems im seeing towards the end of next week that may very well bring some more snow there good morning. Joining us now author deborah kopeka, author of the new book the abcs of parenthood. Youre all about mindful parenting. In your view what does that mean . Mindful parenting is about meeting your child where they are. We broke it down into an alphabet. If you are to take away 25 of the 26 letters and just left with a. A is for acceptance. Acceptance is really all that it is. Its about accepting your child who they are, not the child you wanted them to be so, for example, lets say you imagined weekends doing Little League and your child has no abilities in sports whatsoever. Its about finding out who that child is and really honing in on their special gifts. Sounds easier said than done. It is much easier said than done but what it means mindful means paying attention. One of the letters is j is for jazz. And we say that parenting is like jazz. You know, if you have sheet music for beethovens ninth. Beethovens ninth is always going to be beethovens ninth. Parenting is about learning to react to the other players just like jazz is. You have to take your child at each moment in his life and her life and react to that moment and to that place that they are. My parenting is awfully like heavy metal. Thank you very much. Another piece of mindful advice you give to parents is put the phone down which is super useful. Thank you very much. Deborah kopeka, author of the abcs of parenthood.
