America has already seen more thank 100 reported deadly drownings so far this year all with children under the age of 15 in pools and spas. Nearly half of the drownings happening last month alone. And drownings are on the rise so this morning, we put parents to the test. It looks like any other summer pool party, young people splashing in the water, parents enjoying the barbecue but somewhere in this pool five different swimmers are about to simulate that theyre drowning and were wondering if these moms and dads can spot them. Drowning can happen in just seconds and its often difficult to spot. Its happening to someone in this public pool right now. Can you spot it . There she is. Fortunately a lifeguard spots her and makes a rescue but its in residential pools where lifeguards usually arent present that the majority of drownings take place. Safety experts say part of the reason, distracted parents talking on their phones, grilling, socializing and supervising other children with no water watcher. A person with eyes on the water at all times. So weve invited this group of parents to a pool party assigning them tasks like running that grill and, of course, tending to their own young kids. Weve also added swimmers splashing in the pool but those swimmers are actually trained lifeguards and swim instructors from swim gym swim schools skilled in mimicking a drowning. The parents know theyre here to learn about water safety with some sort of demonstration beginning in about an hour but since drowning often happens when you least expect it, we begin right now. With cameras rolling, i watched from a garage just next to the pool observing some parents checking the water but mostly theyre focused own their assignments and the party and after 30 minutes there we go, she went under. Our swim instructor begins simulating a drowning struggling to keep her head above water arms clawing for the surface and just like the real thing, she barely makes a sound. Meanwhile our guests seem not to notice. More than a minute goes by. Shes still struggling and nobody is looking. Were now looking at more than 2 1 2 minutes and still nobody notices a thing. Reporter after more than four minutes, she simulates a worst case scenario, and stops moving. Remember, shes a trained professional and is just acting. Josh, from the American Red Cross has been watching with us. 4 1 2 minutes, still no parent noticed anything. Does that surprise you . It does not. Reporter kelly goes back to swimming, and we cue another swimmer, and another, and another. All mimicking a drowning, but nobody steps in. We dont realize how quickly these kind of things can go from just a Fun Pool Party to an incident where someone needs help. So now the kids will get out of the water and go get some snacks and theyre going to leave someone behind and that person is going to start drowning. Reporter after 30 seconds of purposeful struggling, this dad spots her. Are you all right . Within 36 seconds he noticed. Its great he noticed. We hope they would notice faster. Reporter he says in some cases swimmers can submerge in just seconds making them even more difficult to spot. Its time to reveal our experiment. There were four drownings that nobody spotted. Whats that make you think . My kids were on the deck so i turned my back. Doesnt mean there werent other kids in the pool. I got thrown off by the age. I think we took for granted they all knew how to swim. Reporter for the man who spotted our victim its too close to reality. You were visibly shaken. Why were you so nervous . Because it happened to my child. Reporter his daughter valentina survived, but he says when she was just 3, she began drowning in a hot tub. He was on the phone. I got a phone call and i got distracted and she was in trouble. So that was it. Reporter water Safety Experts say, one of the solutions is a water watcher, somebody standing next to the pool free from distractions constantly scanning the water for any signs of distress. Rotating every 15 minutes to avoid losing focus. We show the parents what they missed. This is that moment when shes motionless in the water. This seems to be very emotional for you. Theyre all our kids. What else do you say . Reporter and experts tell us the majority of pool drownings actually happen when there are no adults around at all. So consider having a foursided fence around the pool itself, not just the yard and there are pool alarms that will go off if your child gets too close or falls in but really supervision is key here. We told you how important it is to use sunscreen but how well do your kids apply it when theyre left tho their own devices. Becky worley has an eyeopening experiment. I chase my kids around every morning with a tube of this stuff and its a battle but experts say kids should put on their own sunscreen. All right. That sounds good but at what age do they actually do a decent job . You know how kids feel about sunscreen . They hate it. I dont want sunscreen on. I dont need it. I get annoyed. Sunscreen is icky. Its quite annoying. Reporter but parents know its a must. The American Academy of dermatology says even one blistering childhood sunburn is a contributor to later life skin cancers and while the cdc says children of all skin tones should wear sunscreen regularly, past Research Shows nearly four in ten kids dont. Why . Well, i submit this reenactment from my daughter. Put on sunscreen, emmy. No, i dont want to put on sunscreen. Reporter its a battle. Thats what i get. Mom, stop. But holly, a former elementary schoolteacher and founder of her own Sunscreen Company supergoop said there is ang alternative. 23 youre old enough to brush your teeth and wash your hands youre old enough to do your own sunscreen. Lets try. Were using a special camera. What sunscreen on it shows up as plaque and highlights any missed spots and start with 7 to 9yearolds to see if their application is thorough. They put it on then review what they missed. Each of these children applied. None of them hit the ears and the ears are actually very vulnerable to sun damage. Reporter another frequent miss. Children forget to apply it on into the hairline. Reporter something all the younger kids struggled with not using enough sunscreen. What do you see . I missed a lot of spots. Holly says the younger kids are afraid of getting sunscreen in their mouth or eyes. Were missing a few critical spots right around the eye area which is often where sun damage is first detected from an aging and skin cancer perspective. Reporter it showed kids using onequarter of the amount of sunscreen needed to get the protection listed on the bottle. The older group, 11 to 12yearolds were much more consistent. Devin used a lot of sunscreen. So did gus, also an 11yearold who seemed to get the why. I feel like i try to avoid it but i shouldnt because i know that having a grandpa who had skin cancer so i shouldnt get it, you know. I try to prevent. Thats a lot, isnt it . Holly says hes doing it right. Use enough that you can see it on your skin and rub it in until you cant. Reporter they learned a lot and the takeaway start them youngs but kids 10 and under need a lot of coaching to get adequate protection. All right, and we have becky and we have everett and then zena. You said the best way to have them put it on is do it with them. Ill give you the tutorial for your face. So im going to have both of you do it because its important for mom to do it too. Now, treat this stuff, its not precious. Treat it like ketchup. Start, okay, he goes right for there but heres the thing, gets the part that you miss. Get your ears and your neck first and then, look, you missed a little bit on the hairline so lets go right up in there and then straight down the face and get the lips is the technique. The impulse here is to create a platform where people can be the best parts of themselves. Were really trying to understand complex conditions and autism and figure out new treatments, new interventions that can change the outcome tore children then air families. Some live on its beautiful campus which is set in the Rolling Hills of the southern catskills mountains in new york and in homes that dot nearby hurleyville. The center grows food organically on campus selling some of it commercially but the food may have much more value than money can buy. In fact, a soontobe released Research Study says it can be life changing. The results are stunning. And once theyre released later on this year i think it will change the way were treating children with autism. Reporter Scientists Say theres a direct connection to diet and the health of the gast gastrointestinal system in autistic patients. The center for discovery has been at the forefront of this development. What we have found is that the gut micro different than other the children in the study. Food is medicine. If youre looking for salsa, to dip some chips into, this is chunky texas with serrano and pineapple. A little sweet, a little spicy, great on chicken and fish. I caught air on one jet ski, oh, im going up like over this big wave. I wanted to be in a show that my audience would respond to but a character that was more like me and also kind of wishful. I am a surfer but a not very good surfer so my character is an awesome surfer. I have always wanted to be a criminal. No, im kidding. Why not. I have this side of me that wanted to be an outlaw so these shes a thief and a criminal. Its fun. Theres nothing dark or heavy about it which is fun for me. It doesnt feel like im at work. Now on this fourth of july, we want to honor a true american hero, a pilot listen to this who flew more than 400 missions in three different wars. It is a story that is very close to robins heart because of her own family legacy. Heres robin with more. Reporter 30 years in the air force. 409 missions and 99 years young, colonel Charles Mcgee is an american hero. Wherever he goes in his iconic tuskegee airman red blazer all eyes are on him. Thank you for your service, sir. Appreciate that. Reporter the colonel, one of the first black Fighter Pilots who battled the enemy abroad and segregation back home. A black american, second class citizen, dig ditch, cook food, but do anything technical, impossible. Reporter but the Tuskegee Airmen made the seemingly impossible possible completing over 1,200 combat missions during world war ii. You might say the air force really led our country in providing equal access and equal opportunity for all. Reporter on this day of independence, colonel mcgee reminds us to set aside our differences and stand united as a country. We are all american now. Why do they want to say youre oh, youre africanamerican . Well, are you germanamerican . You have to realize its one of the big challenges of today to recognize all for who they are, what they do and how they carry themselves, supporting their country. How is school . Good. Good . The Tuskegee Airmen also known as the red tails and im an honorary member, thats why i have my red blazer, im also honored that i am the daughter of a Tuskegee Airmen, colonel lawrence e. Roberts and like colonel mcgee he shared his secret to success with his children and colonel mcgees are the four ps, perceive, prepare, perform and persevere. Sounds a lot like my daddy.
