The train jumped to his aid before Oliver Tyrone Williams was fatally stabbed. My heart is truly broken over this. It breaks my heart that this goes on bart trains and there is no Police Patrolling these things. Reporter bart confirms that the fight between williams and suspect gejermaine brim was fir reported to them as the train left the station tuesday afternoon, and that officers responded one stop later at south hayward. Williams intervened when the shoeless brim allegedly tried to steal the shoes from another sleeping passenger. Williams was killed with his own knife. Did you know he would have carried something as selfprotection perhaps . Protection. The world is crazy. Thats why he carried it. Thats why he had a knife, for protection. Reporter brim made his first court appearance, covering his face and hiding behind a wall. He is charged with five felonies, including firstdegree murder, carjack and theft. Williams family was seated in the courtroom to represent the brother they lost so suddenly. He was the one that kept our family together, and hes always told me to always tell people that you love them before you hang up the phone. Because you never know when youre not going to see them again. Reporter now brim is expected back in court here on december 5th. Yesterday we learned that he had walked away from a san leandro hospital just hours before the stabbing. Today we learned through Court Documents that he was actually released on his own recognizance in a felony case out of San Francisco when this incident occurred. Live in dublin, laura anthony, abc7 news. Laura, you mentioned that case. Do we know specifically the charges that brim is facing in San Francisco . Well, we learned late today, larry, through sources in San Francisco that he was facing two felony charges and two misdemeanor charges related to the negligent discharge of a firearm some time in San Francisco, an incident that occurred over this past summer. All right. Laura anthony reporting live in dublin, thank you. The stabbing death was top of mind for passengers and staff at this mornings bart board meeting. The meeting started with a moment of silence for Oliver Tyrone Williams. And then it was time for public comment. News station agent suzanne gambel told about watching nearly 30 people an hour jump the fare gates, and about a scary experience she recently had at the south hayward station. I called the police on a man who was chasing a woman on to the train in south hayward. He hurdled the gates to get at her. The bart board has selected new fare gates, but right now is looking for funding. Building a safer bart is part of building a better bay area. After tuesdays stabbing, bart announced it would add more police as well as Community Service officers and fare inspectors on platforms and trains. Abc7 News Reporter kris reyes rode bart all day to look for the extra police presence. Im going to be riding the daly city train. Im going to be riding the pittsburgbay point train and the warm springs south fremont train. And im going to tell you what i see. Were also going to be talking to riders, seeing if theyre seeing more security, and if they feel safe on the train. Are you seeing more security on the train this week . No. I cant say that i have. No, i havent. Reporte not really . No. Not this week. There is no security. There is no bart police. She actually spotted security upstairs, and she has a message for them. Come downstairs. If youre all huddled up there, we dont get the help we need. Why dont you disperse and come see where all the action is . It would be important for bart to have more police, even though having police on the train isnt necessarily going to mean that youre going to be safe. But maybe that presence would help. Are you worried because of happen had here at hayward station this week, the murder that took place . Yeah, because its been happening more and more often. I carry pepper spray. I carry a screwdriver that is this long. I have a stun gun on me because i take bart every day, and especially when i come on bart at night, im always watching. I watch everything, even not for myself, but for other people as well. I just got off the phone with bart officials. Were waiting to see if we can get an oncamera interview. They did tell me there is not only increased security personnel on their system, there are more Police Officers. We spotted our first bart police right there. I will tell you this. Every rider that weve spoken to, they have not seen any increased security. And so why did kris not see Many Police Officers . Bart provided this explanation. All patrol officers are required to ride trains during each shift. We also have a team of officers who are dedicated to riding trains during the peak of commute. There are as many as 58 trains in service. Most shifts are staffed with about 30 officers. So we do not have enough officers to be on every train. We rely on our bart customers to be our eyes and ears to reported illegal activity. Our officers will respond. So what do you want to see on bart . Better transit . Part of building a better bay area . Share ideas by joining our building a better Bay Area Group on facebook. An international incident. Almost all of todays outages affected people in the north bay. Were talking napa, solano and in calistoga, people had their electricity restored around 1 30 this afternoon. Many residents hope this is the last power shutoff that they will endure for a long time. Some of them now own generators after dealing with these multiple outages during the past two months. We turn on the generator, but then it doesnt generate certain areas of the house. I have to go spend 58 yesterday at steves hardware to get more extension cords. It makes a lot of difference. Weve got things like fish tanks and things like that that need to keep going. Some homes and businesses still are without power. Pg e hopes to have their electricity back on later this evening. Those power shutoffs, theyre all weatherrelated. Lets bring in spencer christian, take a look at the forecast. Spencer, the wind has died down, and youre seeing some rain out there . That is true. Abc7 news is focused on building a better bay area, tackling the tough topics that affect our quality of life, like the housing crisis and the role that tech plays in theay area. Today youtubes ceo made a sizable donation to a nonprofit and google. Org joined in with an even bigger donation. Lyanne melendez takes a closer look at what a difference the money will make. The nonprofit hamilton families has an Emergency Shelter and helps place families into permanent housing. That inspired youtube ceo whose daughter was working on a report on homelessness. As i listened to her opinions and reactions, i realized i didnt have a lot of answers for something that was so important and affecting so many families in the bay area. The obvious place to come to get the big picture was hamilton families. Last year the nonprofit helped 700 families. According to their records, when they leave hamilton, 87 of families are stabilized after one year of being placed in permanent housing. So she got the information she needed for her daughter, and today she and her husband paid it forward, donating 500,000. Google. Org also gave another 850,000. For a total of 1. 35 million to boost the work of hamilton families. [ applause ] even with two incomes, the reality is that families can sometimes end up on the streets. People who have been working minimum wage jobs are not able to find Affordable Housing in the bay area. The National Alliance to end homelessness estimates that a chronically homeless person costs taxpayers more than 35,000 a year. But those costs are reduced by 50 when they are placed in supportive housing. At the end of the day, opportunities like this give us hope. It reminds us that this is not just a moment but a movement. Hamilton says donations like those help transform outcomes for future generations. In San Francisco, lyanne melendez, abc7 news. And this week abc7 news is focused on fremont. The citys filled with examples of building a better bay area like helping people prepare to work here. What made you realize that we need to start a program like this . Well, we are here in fremont, and fremont is the manufacturing hub of the Silicon Valley. Tech jobs arent just for engineers. You can make a good living as but you dont feel good. But there is so much more, like all this. Its where we work, live, and love. All of our cities big and small are facing the same problems and everyone is looking for solutions. Thats why abc7 is looking for answers and inspiration in communities throughout the region and revealing how theyre tackling the same big problems. How is fremont working to build a better bay area. So as you know, all this week weve been focusing on fremont, and fremonts efforts to build a better bay area. With land Still Available for housing, tech campuses and industrial development, some fremont residents expressed concern during our monday town hall about too much urbanization and how that might change some of their historic district. So we went to get some answers to their questions. Abc7 News Reporter david louie explores the citys plan to be, quote, strategically urban. There is construction under way all over fremont, which concerns some residents who attended the abc7 news town hall meeting on monday. Our phil matier read one of the questions submitted. We talk about a lot of special districts in the area, and how are you going to preserve them . Irvington is one of those special districts, which dates back to the gold rush era and was later incorporated into fremont. It retains an old west feel at its crossroads known as five corners. Fremonts Community Development director says fremonts identity is to be strategically urban with a new focus on housing such as the warm springs bart the more suburban parts of fremont dont need to change dramatically over time. Theyll change some over time there will be some new development. But really, the bulk of development will be focused in these key locations. People who live and work in irvington say there is a need for housing, but the kind of housing going up tends to be multihousing units. And they bemoan that its changing the character of the community. They work at tangles salon in the heart of irvington. Youre losing the feeling of your neighborhood and being able to talk to each other. And everything is just so fastpaced. A family store and restaurants and all those things have been demolished, and theyre building all the high density housing where there is no sense of community. Yes, urbanization is happening across fremont, but residents of the irvington, niles, and Center Districts will be watching closely. In fremont, david louie, abc7 news. The east bay used to be home to a large number of blue collar jobs, but over the years, the rise of tech, most of those jobs have gone away. Still, it turns out new manufacturing jobs are available. There just arent enough people trained to do them. Now a new program in fremont may have the solution, and its one that could be used as a model nationwide. Abc7 News Reporter liz kreutz has the story. In Silicon Valley, fremont is the capital for advanced manufacturing. Its where tesla has its factory. But for those businesses looking to hire, theyre running into a big problem. My name is brian paper. Im the chief operating officer at bay area circuits. Its important for us to be a manufacturer located in Silicon Valley because thats where all of our customers are. But that comes with its challenges. And up with of those is labor. On top of an aging and retiring workforce, manufacturing jobs are changing. And because of that, companies cant find people to fill those jobs. When we bring students in to our facility, their impression is that theyre going to see people standing on an Assembly Line turning a wrench. Thats really not what it is anymore. Thats where fremonts eloni Community College comes in. Hi, youre recording already this is a professor of Electrical Engineering and a head of the manufacturing programs, specifically tailored to train students in new manufacturing. Welcome to our makeshift lab. She took us into her classroom, a temporary portable until the colleges new building opens next year. So thats a line filling robot. Inside students are learning how to operate robots and 3d printers. I know there is misconception with smart manufacturing, people are going to lose their jobs, robots are taking over the world. But thats a real stereotypical fallacy. What made you realize we need to start a program like this . Well, we are here in fremont, and fremont is the manufacturing hub of the Silicon Valley. And we were constantly getting told by companies around in fremont hey, we need a program to train technicians. Yes, we have engineers, but we dont have technician eloni is Community College in california with this kind of program. They have a partnership with tesla and have been nationally recognized as a center for excellence in smart manufacturing. I think that now we are trying to remove the stereotypical fallacy that you could earn a good wage. You can also earn pretty good salary. Without four years. Youre better off. As she showed us around the soon to open new engineering building, she explained how there are other benefits to the two year program too. I think this is going to bridge the equity gap. More people of color, more women getting in and getting out because most people that are economically disadvantage have had a lot of responsibilities, their parents, theyre caring for others. So they really want the get in and get out. So thats what our program is tailored to what its doing. I say building a better bay area. Yeah, definitely. It is building a better bay area. Yeah, definitely. In fremont, liz kreutz, abc7 news. Fremonts largest employer is tesla, and they are making a big announcement tonight that will unveil an electric pickup truck. Its called the cybertruck. Ceo elon musk tweeted that the unveiling will happen in l. A. Near the spacex rocket factory. That t announcement will be live streamed starting at 8 00 p. M. Testimony on capitol hill wrapping up a marathon week of impeachment hearings. Fiona hill, a former white house russia expert and david holmes, a senior Ukraine Embassy official both testified today. Here is abc News Reporter rachel scott. Fiona hill warned of the 2016 election. I refuse to be part of an effort to reg jit mize an alternate narrative that the Ukrainian Government is an adversary and that the ukraine, not russia, attacked us in 2016. That message from hill served as a direct contrast to what the Top Republican on the Intelligence Committee said just one day earlier. The thing that the democrats have been unwilling to accept is that their operatives got Campaign Dirt from ukrainians in the 2016 election. Hill, a former senior white house official who reported directly to former National Security adviser john bolton said bolton had serious concerns about the role of the president s personal attorney. In the course of that discussion said that Rudy Giuliani was a hand grenade that was going to blow everyone up. Several witnesses have painted giuliani as a central figure in an alleged Pressure Campaign against ukraine, pressure the president has repeatedly denied. Diplomat david holmes gave lawmakers his take. My clear impression was that the Security Assistance hold was likely intended by the president either as an expression of dissatisfaction with the ukrainians who had not yet agreed to the Burisma Biden investigation, or as an effort to increase the pressure on them to do so. But for holmes, it was phone call he overheard between President Trump and the u. S. Ambassador to the eu Gordon Sondland that stood out. Here he is actually having that contact with the president , hearing the president s voice and them talking about this issue of the biden investigation. And the president s message to his party has been clear. Stay tough. Hold the line of defense. He believes that these hearings are unfair, but democrats say they are moving forward with tis investigation with or without the cooperation of the white house. Rachel scott, abc news, capitol hill. Massachusetts lawmakers passed a bill today banning the sale of flavored vaping and Tobacco Products that law would also cover menthol cigarettes. If approved by the governor, the bill would also levee a 75 excise tax on vaping products. It would help pay for counseling to help people stop using tobacco. A bay area mother and daughter fundraising for pank cancer researc, and how theyre combining their personal story and a love this month is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness month. And on this world pancreatic cancer day, a bay area woman and her mother are turning their love of jeopardy into a campaign to find a cure. Here is abc7 news anchor dion lim. We love you, alex. To say lauren mara and her mother jane are fans of jeopardy could be an understatement. I grew up watching jeopardy as a kid. I still watch it every night with my mom. But their love for alex has become more meaningful in the last few months after alex revealed he had stage 4 pancreatic cancer. So my dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer when he was 12. We were really inspired by his honesty after his diagnosis. That was back in 2004. For two years, ed mara fought with toughness, and as he called it, a passion to win. He was the type of person that would get up every day and be grateful for what he had and grateful for life, and he had a passion for it, to work hard and to fight hard against his disease. Laurens father passed away in july of 2006. We miss him terribly. We miss him every day. Every year since her fathers passing, lauren and her mom fund raise for the cause. They even made this video and campaign asking for checks for alex trebek to Fund Research for everyone touched by the disease. I hope that he would be proud of us. I think in a way, it gets harder every year. Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest forms of cancer with a fiveyear survival rate of less than 10 , which is why fundraising for a cure is so important. We dont know enough about the biology of this disease in order to understand how to appropriately stop it in its tracks. Question is whats next . Answer is hopefully a successful fundraising campaign. In San Francisco, dion lim, abc7 news. And you can watch alex trebek host jeopardy every night at 7 00 right after abc7 news at 6 00. As we head to black friday, thoughts turn to Holiday Shopping and toys for children. A Consumer Group has put out its annual trouble in toy land report. Toys have become much safer, yet a quarter million families went to the African American last year after a little one swallowed a toy. 7 on your sides Michael Finney is here. They put this out every year, and its a good warning to keep in mind. I toys bring so much fun and development, but can they also pose a threat . Several products in a report saying some toys can harm children evein wto ng way. Watch out for. Playing with slime, stretching, twisting, smashing can be fun, creative, calming. Just dont eat it. It has very high concentrations of boron. Of the California PublicInterest Research group says four brands of slime were found to contain boron, a material made of borax which can cause nausea and vomiting. It says here do not eat. It could be dangerous. However, some kids might not resist the temptation to try. So here you can see very very lightup. This toy registered at 87 decibels, far too loud for the youngest child. If its annoying to you, its probably not good for your kids either. Babies, infants, toddlers are always putting things in their mouth. This fishing toy is meant for older kids. But if younger siblings get ahold of the little parts, they might swallow them. This is small enough to fit inside a toilet roll. It means its small enough for a child to choke on it. Which is also a concern with magnets. This is a stretch reliever meant for adults. We have hundreds of very powerful magnets. And if a child swallows a couple of them, it can cause serious internal damage. Finally, the Traditional Party balloon, seemingly harmless. The problem is if a balloon like this gets popped, there is all these tiny small parts. Little pieces that kids might chew on. Were not saying that toys with small parts shouldnt exist in the world. But we are seeing that parents with very Young Children need to be aware. Now the Toy Industry Association says this report is needlessly scaring parents, saying toys are among the most regulated and safest of all categories of consumer products. And it says toymakers adhere to all government standards. Now ive posted the entire response by the Industry Group and the full trouble in toy land report, pardon me, on our website at abc7news. Com. Now do you have a Consumer Problem . I want to hear from you. My 7 on your side hotline is open monday through friday, 10 to 2 00, 4159548151. You can also reach me on my Facebook Page and through abc7news. Com. Good information. You got to keep an eye on your kids. You a little one. The people who make balloons, they wont even give them to your kid if theyre under 2. If they pop and the little piece of balloon, they can easily choke on it. And it happens so fast. Got to be careful. Lets get to spencer and rain. Coming soon. Its coming next week. Right now we have calm conditions. Here is live doppler 7. Mainly clear skies tonight. Dry, of course. And this dry pattern still causes concern about fire. Meanwhile, let me call your attention to a beach hazard statement. We have rough surf right now, and this statement will be in effect from 4 00 a. M. Tomorrow to saturday. Wave heights are a bit elevated and there is an increased risk of sneaker waves mainly for our northnorthwest facing beaches. On we go to overnight conditions. Mainly clear skies, but well have passing high clouds and a few low clouds will develop near the coast. Overnight lows mainly in the mid to upper 40s. A little chillier in the north bay valleys. We go to tomorrow. Sunny, dry day. Mainly sunny with some passing high clouds. Highs will range from about 60 at the coast to mainly low and mid60s near the bay. Mid and upper 60s inland. Now lets get to the point that larry is excited about, the approaching rain. Here is our forecast animation. By tuesday evening, we expect rain to be moving in from our northwest, and the system will also bring some snow to the sierra, and the showers will continue into wednesday morning and wednesday evening.
