Because i mean, do all men do one thing . cause then that means all women do something else. So i am going to challenge him, and hes the expert. Im an expert at failing at relationships, but i got it right recently, so well talk about it. [ laughter ] our first guest wrote todays modern love column in the new york times. Its title how the worst date of my life became the best. So, heres the story. She went out with a guy she says was a knowitall and completely forgettable. And she literally forgot him. Now, fastforward 24 years. She goes out with him again not realizing hes the same guy but theres more. This time around, it was love, and theyre with us now. Please welcome bonnie altucher and her boyfriend rich meeter. Thank you so much for joining us. Hi. I love this story. Okay, bonnie, tell me this. What went wrong on the first date, the first time around, 24 years ago . Well, i had just separated from my husband. I had been separated for about a year. I thought, okay, its time for me to look for somebody new. I looked. Theres no internet at this point, no online dating. I look at the new york press. It has a lot of personals ads, and im very skeptical, but i see one. I think, this is a great ad. So i we meet at the peacock cafe in the village. It doesnt exist anymore, but we met there. And i see this guy who i think is really goodlooking. We talk. Hes really interesting. Hes saying all his favorite movies, his favorite bands, and theyre all my favorites, and when he does this, im like, oh, thats my favorite band too, and oh, i love that movie too. Thats amazing. And the more i do that, the more i see his face falling. Oh. And im thinking, whats going on here . Im trying to connect with him, and more and more i feel hes distancing himself from me, and im really not enjoying this date by the end. Rich, what was your impression of that date . Very different impression. I was 37. Id never been married. So i was going on all these dates through new york press personals. And back then, you didnt see someone until you met them. Right. I met her, i thought she was beautiful, i thought she was really interesting, really smart. And what really blew me away is we just had every little detail of interest in common. And my reaction to this amazing thing was it just kind of i was like a deer in the headlights. So you were mesmerized. I was mesmerized. She thought you were not interested. Exactly. Okay, so, you both go your separate ways, and the date was a bust. He called me. Oh, he called you . And then . And when he called me, i had already decided somebody who makes me feel this insecure on a first date is not getting a second one. Okay, so it was done. Move on. Except. Oh, boy. He asked me out, and i said, im sorry, but the last two days, ive just decided to get back together with my husband. So i lied. [ laughter ] i didnt want to hurt his feelings, so thats all i could come up with. Okay. And thats what i said. So you lied to him to get away from him . Yes. 24 years later, um, how did you reconnect . At that point, i was really separated from my husband. I started i didnt but, you know, i started dating a little bit, just a little bit. I went on bumble. I saw this great profile. I really want to meet this guy. Oh, so i love that its modern now. So you started out in the blackandwhite paper. Now 24 years later were on the internet. Okay, this is amazing. Now i see him. We were writing back and forth to each other. I meet him, and im all excited. And then it just fell flat. Like, we had a conversation. It was fine, but i felt he was trying a little too hard. I wasnt feeling any chemistry. This was this guy here . Yes. And i just felt like, well, you know, i liked him online, but in person and, you know, i felt like at my age, i dont have that much time to keep seeing somebody did you not look at him and recognize him from 24 years ago . No. No. He looks very similar than before. Did the name ring a bell . No, i couldnt remember how many dates had you gone on that you would forget this man . Quite honestly, like three, but i had i really i mean, 24 it was one hour 24 years ago. I just did not remember him. Rich, did you recognize bonnie . Not at all. What . What year was this again . 1993. What were yall on in the 90s that you dont remember . [ laughter ] wild times back then. So, you didnt remember her. The names didnt ring a bell . Both no. How did you realize that you were the two people who 24 years
