Our team covering all the angles on this Global Health emergency. And we certainly do say good morning, america. Happy to be with you on this monday morning. So much has changed in a short amount of time, but what has not changed is the american spirit. At home in connecticut this weekend, neighbors helping neighbors, doing what we could to support local small businesses, staying within the guidelines of social distancing. Its been important. Even here in the city you can tell it has slowed down. People are listening to most people are listening about staying inside and doing the right thing, but you can tell central park was a lot more empty. People keeping that respectful distance as we are right here this morning. The whole world is now in the grip of this virus. Overnight every American Peace corp. Volunteer has been ordered to come home. Take a look at this extraordinary image from vatican sunday when pope francis gave his blessing to an empty st. Peters square. Usually thousands of people packed in that scare to hear the pope. We have a lot to get to and heres what we know right now. Worldwide there are more than 160,000 cases confirmed and the global death toll now topping 6,000. Cases in the United States soar past 3,000. The cdc recommending all gatherings of 50 or more people be cancelled for at least the next eight weeks. New york city among the cities and states closing bars and restaurants to dinein customers. New york city closing its Public School system, leaving more than a Million Students home this morning. Nationwide, 64,000 schools are closed. Thats impacting more than 30 Million Students. Closing those schools a tough decision for new yorks Governor Andrew Cuomo. Well talk to him about that and also his calls to bring in the military to help hospitals. The Surgeon General is going to join us as we learn a new vaccine is being tested. We begin with breaking news for our viewers in the west. Its another tough morning on wall street. The dow down nearly 11 . Trading was suspended because they dropped so much. We want to go to rebecca jarvis. This came despite the rate cut from the Federal Reserve . Reporter thats right, george. The sell off since stocks have reopened has continued despite the fact that the Federal Reserve took Emergency Action last night cutting Interest Rates to near 0 in a coordinated action with Central Banks around the world. Goldman sachs thinks the gdp will be at its lowest level in 30 years. So many questions about the impact on the economy. This just beginning on wall street. Theres been a cascade of closings all across the country. Reporter new yorks mayor say these closures are meant to save lives. This morning, extreme measures across the country to try to slow the pandemic. The cdc now recommending no gatherings of 50 or more people as Top Health Officials warn it could get worse before it gets better. The worse is yet ahead for us. Reporter President Trump urging calm, asking people not to hoard those Household Essentials while many store shelves across america are wiped clean. Theres no need for anybody in the country to hoard essential food supplies. Reporter nationwide at least 64,000 schools are closed, impacting more than 30 Million Students. From los angeles to milwaukee to new york city, the Largest School district in the country. Its going to be very difficult for a lot of families. Reporter mayor de blasio saying schools will remain closed until at least april 20th. Officials scrambling to provide much needed meals for kids and a plan for remote learning. Theres no reason to put us in jeopardy if we can easily have a Good Alternative at home. Reporter starting tomorrow the mayor of new york city also ordering the closure of all bars and movie theaters, restaurants and cafes limited to takeout and delivery. Illinois ordering restaurants to close, only allowing them to serve takeout. In california the governor calling for similar shutdowns including wineries and urging home isolation for all adults over the age of 65. We believe its appropriate under the circumstances to move in that direction. Reporter and as spring break is set to kick off, miami beach and ft. Lauderdale announcing sunday they are closing some beaches and enacting a 10 00 p. M. Curfew. The mayor of miami now quarantined in his home after being diagnosed with covid19. I was very shocked initially but then i realized quickly that i had to go public with the information because i come into contact with a lot of people. Reporter at u. S. Airports, chaos as americans rush home following travel bans on european countries. People waiting shoulder to shoulder in long lines for medical screenings. Drivethrough testing now increasing, cars lining up in wilmington, delaware, and in that containment zone in new rochelle, new york, Health Care Workers fully covered reaching through a window and taking a swab. Now, one very important note. Despite all of the closures, the National Security council is now saying that rumors of a nationwide quarantine are fake and theyre adding in a tweet that there is no national lockdown. The cdc has and will continue to post the latest guidance on covid19. Still, people are trying to figure out what these unprecedented changes will actually mean for their every day lives. Robin . Unchartered territory, okay, whit. The spread of the virus in the u. S. Has been dramatic. Take a look just two weeks ago. There were 80 confirmed cases in ten states and now there are more than 3,700 cases in 49 states, all but west virginia. Health care workers are now also starting to test positive. Eva pilgrim is at Lenox Health Hospital here in the city. Good morning, eva. Reporter good morning, robin. Hospitals all across the country are battling this virus and preparing for it to get worse. Here in new york city all hospitals will now be cancelling, postponing those elective surgeries to preserve resources, beds, equipment and staff, as they get ready for the crush of patients that could potentially come in. This morning, hospitals on the front line of the fight against coronavirus bracing for a possible spike that could overrun the health care system. In boston, theyre reassessing their supplies, gloves, masks, ventilators, preparing for the worst. Were setting up also testing sites, alternative sites of care, to make sure that we can test patients and so that patients with mild illness dont come into the hospital. Reporter as Health Care Workers try to help the patients coming in, multiple workers at brigham and Womens Hospital have now tested positive for covid19. The hospital contacting all patients and staff who may have been exposed. In ohio a nurses union is demanding more protective equipment to safeguard against infected patients. We are very concerned that when this virus peaks that we have enough of this equipment for our nurses to take care of our patients properly. Reporter the number of Health Care Workers testing positive for covid19 is growing. A National Institutes of health employee, a Health Care Worker in newark, new jersey. This obviously becomes a risk when it happens more and more often because the supply of Health Care Workers is of course affected. If you start quarantining more and more folks on the front line who see patients, that becomes a risk in and of itself. Reporter and multiple caretakers in that nursing home in washington, now some are calling for more help from the u. S. Military, asking the president to mobilize the army corps of engineers to add medical facilities and ensure hospitals are able to care for the patients that may flood in. I think making those preparations is a good idea now in case we might need them. Reporter now doctors are pleading with people, if you are one of those who are hoarding those n95 masks, theyre asking that you donate them to a health care facility. There arent enough of those masks, and they say they are critical to them being able to take care of people as this outbreak continues. George . That is so important. Okay, eva, thanks very much. Lets bring in new York Governor Andrew Cuomo now. Governor, thank you for joining us. I know its been a trying time. Lets start with this hospital situation. Youve warned that the hospitals in new york and across the country could be overwhelmed and think its time to call in the military . Yes. Good morning. Good to be with you, george. Look, we have been behind this disease from day one. We saw the disease developing in china back in november. We werent ready for it, and weve been playing catchup ever since. You have to get ahead of this, right . Its not fighting the last war, its fighting the next war. The next war is going to be overwhelming our hospital systems. You look at any of these projections and you see that coming. When you see that chart of the curve, i see it as a wave and the wave is going to break on the hospital system. We dont have the capacity to build more hospitals quickly. The only way would be if the army corps of engineers came in, worked with the states to retrofit existing buildings. Take my college dorms. Take my Surplus Property and retrofit it for more hospital beds, because, george, that is going to be in need. I know youve spoken with the president about this. Has he accepted your argument . I weve talked. I sent an open letter to him yesterday. I did talk to him about the testing which was going very slow and i said let the federal government get out of the testing business and allow the states to take it over. He allowed us to take over the testing, and weve made great progress on the testing. But again, that was yesterday. Tomorrow is going to be the wave breaking on the hospitals. Now, just to give you an idea, the state of new york, Major Health Care system, i only have 50,000 hospital beds. I only have 3,000 intensive care unit beds, and these people are going to need the intensive care unit beds. The only hope we have now at this late date, retrofit existing facilities. Get some of the people from the hospitals into those new medical facilities and then backfill the hospital beds with the coronavirus. States cant build, george, as you know. Only the federal government can build. Its the army corps of engineers, thats what they do. Let them come in today, today, because time is short. And this federal government has to get more engaged. Theres been no country that has handled this that has not nationalized it. You just did a piece on all the Different Things different states are doing. This Patchwork Quilt of policies doesnt work. It makes no sense for me to do something in new york and new jersey to do something else. Is this new federal standard i close the bars. They go to new jersey. Is this new federal standard enough that basically no gatherings of 50 or more for eight weeks . George, no. You need the specific rules. Just take that litany that you went through. Every state cannot come up with its own rules. Youll just have people going from state to state. If i say you cant go to a bar in new york, you know youll go to new jersey. Youll go to connecticut. Youll go to wherever you can be served. Thats the last thing we want. Set the National Standards and lets live with them. Otherwise, again, you come up with this ad hoc system thats not going to work. I know you were reluctant to close the schools, especially because of concerns about child care and student meals, but the schools are closed right now. Have those issues been resolved . Well, i closed the schools yesterday, new york city, nassau, suffolk and westchester, the main density of our cases. But i closed them with the condition that those local governments come up with a child care plan. Because, again, if you follow the reasoning i laid out, your crisis is in the hospitals. That is what is going to happen. The crisis of hospital capacity. You close schools, nurses dont come to work. Health care workers dont come to work. Now you have a real problem. So, i have no never had an issue with closing the schools, but i want to make sure and i demanded new york city, westchester, rockland, nassau, suffolk, im closing the schools. You must have a child care plan and a food program because many students get their food, as you know, from the schools. It is so important. Governor, thank you for your time this morning. Thanks, george. Michael . All right, george, thank you. As hospitals brace here at home, some countries are taking more extreme measures overseas. Germany closing its borders to several countries including france. Spain joining italy, putting all 47 million citizens on lockdown for the next two weeks. Officials driving through towns using loud speakers to tell people to stay inside, while italy faces its toughest day yet, reporting 3,600 new cases and 368 deaths in 24 hours. But there are moments of hope, everybody. Take a look in spain, a social Media Campaign prompting families to come on their balconies at exactly 10 00 p. M. To cheer and support heroic Health Care Workers on the front lines and im sure those workers appreciated the acknowledgment for the important work theyre doing. Now lets put a smile on peoples faces during this difficult time. With school plays cancelled nationwide, some stars are giving kids an audience on social media. Jennifer garner saying the show must go on, people, encouraging kids to show off their vast talents. Broadway star Laura Benanti had the same idea. Take a look. I know for me my High School Musical was like a lifesaver. So, if you would like to sing a song that you are not going to get to sing now and tag me, i want to see you. So many beautiful voices, such talent all across the country, kids sharing their videos. In our next hour were going to speak to laura about what inspired her callout. Were going to continue with the latest on the coronavirus, and our exclusive with nba superstar Donovan Mitchell who has tested positive while his utah jazz teammate rudy gobert received backlash after jokingly touching reporters microphones a day before he tested positive. Were going to speak with donovan from isolation in just a moment. But first, paula faris with the story. Reporter this is the moment the first nba game was canceled in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic after Utah Jazz Center rudy gobert testing positive for the virus. The positive test coming just days after gobert mocked the virus by touching all of the microphones and recorders in front of him at a press conference. The next day, goberts teammate, allstar guard Donovan Mitchell, tested positive as well. Mitchell took to instagram to discuss his diagnosis, saying, hopefully people can continue to educate themselves and realize that they need to behave responsibly both for their own health and for the wellbeing of those around them. And over the weekend there was another positive test in the nba. Detroit pistons forward christian wood, seen here playing against gobert, tested positive. Now gobert is apologizing for the way he handled the coronavirus outbreak. I wish i would have taken this thing more seriously and i hope everyone else will do so because we can do it together. Reporter for good morning america, paula faris, abc news, new york. Our thanks to paula for that report, and now joining us is Donovan Mitchell in isolation. It is great to see you, donovan. First of all, how are you feeling this morning . Great to see you too as well. Thank you for having me. Im im fine. You know, things are going well. Just in isolation. Got a unique setup. But yeah, no fever, no symptoms as of right now. Im just blessed to be able to be okay. Were thankful to hear that. What are doctors telling you right now . Right now the biggest thing for me is just to stay in isolation and just be able to keep to myself. I have no symptoms which is a unique situation. No symptoms now and you had no symptoms when you were tested. You didnt feel ill at all . No. I keep making a joke when people ask me. I would say if you were to tell me i could play in a sevengame series tomorrow, i would be ready to lace up. Like i said, im really blessed that thats the case. Tell us what the testing was like for people who may have to be tested. Its actually interesting, you know. So as you know, we all got tested and, you know, for me for us, it was a swab down the throat. It was about 15 seconds of probably the most discomfort i ever had. I ended up crying. Tears came out of my eyes when they started going up in this area. It was definitely unique, but im glad i was able to get it done. In paulas report we heard from your teammate rudy gobert, and he has been very apologetic and he has admitted also that he was reckless, though he didnt know at the time that he was going to test positive, but still his actions were were reckless. Have you had a chance and again, he has apologized. But have you had a chance to have any communication with your teammate . To be honest with you, robin, you know, it took awhile for me to kind of cool off, you know, and i read what he said and i heard what he said. So im glad hes doing okay. Im glad im doing well. Im just really happy, to be honest, robin, that its just i hate to say its just two of us but it wasnt the whole party. At the end of the day neither him or i have children at home. I know i have teammates that have children, have some staff that have children at home. So im glad that we were able to kind of contain it as much as possible. Thankfully the vast majority of people will recover. But can you just again just tell people what your message is for them this morning . Im asymptomatic. I dont have any symptoms. I could walk down the street. If it wasnt Public Knowledge that i was sick, you wouldnt know it. I think thats the scariest part about this virus, is that you may seem fine, be fine and you never know who you may be talking to who theyre going home to. Youre in isolation. Yeah, drink of water. Always. Got to stay hydrated. Thats true, always. So what are you doing . Youre an active guy. What are you doing in isolation . How are you occupying your time . Movies and i think some of the basketball world saw yesterday, some of the guys watching old highlights. Ive been doing a lot of that. I watched myself through college. I watched myself through the nba. Its kind of bringing back good memories. But you miss the game, miss playing in front of some of the best fans in the world in the nba. And the School Children all across the country and i know, donovan, that youre doing something to help out there in your community with them. What is it . Yes. So right now im working on a partnership with the Salt Lake CityGranite School district. Thats about 88 to 90 schools, about 66,000 kids just being able to provide them meals, you know. In that particular district in Salt Lake City, its home to some of the most Vulnerable Children in salt lake. I just want to be able to give back because like i said this is time will tell. You really dont know. You cant say. Doctors cant pinpoint a date, so for parents who may not have the money, you know, being able to not send their kids off to school to get food i think is a scary feeling for them and i want to be able to make sure that theyre set and they understand that, you know, guys like myself and whoever may have their back. Appreciate your generosity there, donovan, and great to hear about your father. In all sincerity, glad youre doing as well as you are, and appreciate very much you taking some time to spend with us. You take care. Yes. Thank you so much. Be well. He visited his father whos with the mets and fortunately came back negative but you heard him talk about how uncomfortable the testing was, but hes the first to admit how grateful he was to take the test. Its kind of disconcerting to see how well hes doing, but he has it. You may think that you are doing fine, but you cant just think of yourself. Think of the others as well when you are going through this. Dont be selfish basically. No. Great job, robin. Coming up, how to keep your family on track in the new normal everyone, including the kids, working from home. And up next, the right way to do social distancing. We are back now with one of the most important steps we can take to fight the spread of coronavirus, but theres a lot of confusion about what social distancing really means. T. J. Holmes is in central park with more. And, t. J. , medical professionals say you can still go outside but you just have to be smart about it. Reporter yeah, stra, what social distancing means, just give me my space, man. Just give me some space, but the confusion comes at a time were being told to stay away from each other. Then why did i see that restaurant packed last night, and why are people still going to the movies . Well, for those still trying to get out there, not wanting to social distance, well, some places are about to force you to do so. Six feet, thats how far the cdc says you should stay apart from people to practice social distancing to stop the spread of covid19, but over the weekend, scenes like these at restaurants, stores and on the street. Not much distancing, and we got mixed messages like this from california congressman devin nunes. If youre healthy, you and your family, its a great time to go out, go to a local restaurant. Likely you can get in easily. Lets not hurt the working people in this country. Cleaning off the shelves. Go to your local pub. Reporter now a crackdown. California, ohio, new york city, illinois, washington and massachusetts ending Dinein Service at restaurants and bars. Police cleared out new orleans iconic bourbon street as a new normal sets in. Im practicing as much social distancing as i possibly can. I dont go out. Reporter the cdc hoping people limit activities outside the home to slow the spread. Shannon, an american living in northern italy, says she understands why the precautions are necessary. We have tried to spend time doing things as a family, and it does get a little boring. But weve realized after listening to pleas from medical staff whos been working 22 hours a day, 7 days a week, the only thing that a person whos not a doctor or a nurse or a fireman can do to help is that we can stay home. We can stay home and not get sick. Reporter all right, you dont have to, of course, go out for some things. Yes, you have to go out and get food, but you dont have to go bowling. Think of it like that. And yes, for the idea of fresh air, it is good. A lot of people out here taking runs on their own but you dont want to go outside and be at a picnic with ten people necessarily, stra. Think of it like that. Just stay away from people as much as you can. You look like you picked a good spot to do that, t. J. Thank you for that. Were joined from washington by u. S. Surgeon general dr. Jerome adams. Dr. Adams, the cdc recommended that all events consisting of 50 people or more be canceled for at least the next eight weeks, and on top of that you have people going to businesses. Restaurants are still open in some places. Should we go to stores . What should we do . Should we stay home and not go anywhere and not have any visitors . What is your recommendation . Well, great questions. And first of all, i want to say thank you for that story on Donovan Mitchell because its important for people to understand that when we look at the south korea data, 96 of people who actually had flu symptoms tested negative for covid. So again, for most people youre still going to be at low risk for getting it and if you do get it, the south korea data says 99 of people fully recovered. So we want people to keep things in context, but we also want people to understand that, look, our numbers are where italys were about two weeks ago. Now is the time to really lean into mitigation strategies, social distancing, making sure youre washing your hands frequently. What i would recommend to folks is what tony fauci said yesterday. Now is the time for us all to understand that we all have a role to play. Even if you are at low risk, you dont want to be the one to take coronavirus to your grandmother, to your poppop and cause them to end up getting what could be a fatal illness because they are at highest risk. So we want people to lean into supporting local businesses in a way that allows social distancing. You saw in california, more people are encouraging carryout instead of going to restaurants. As you mentioned, the cdc has said that we shouldnt have any large gatherings over 50 people for over the next eight weeks. Youre a member of the president s task force and weve been hearing the first vaccine is being tested and that a new drug is being used in severely ill patients. So what can you tell us about that . Well, those are pharmaceutical interventions. We dont expect a vaccine to be ready to roll out for at least a year. Important for people to know that a vaccine, if its developed, will help us for the next round of coronavirus. The first round really is going to hinge on us leaning into hand washing and social distancing. Remdesivir is a medication that people are experimenting with to treat coronavirus. And, again, that looks promising thus far, but whats really going to get us through this are those tried and true Public Health measures that weve been talking about all along. I think its also important to note that yesterday there was a briefing at the white house where we helped america understand we really feel like weve turned the corner on testing. Were going to focus first on Health Care Workers, the people who take care of the people and also those at highest risk, people over 65 with symptoms, but we feel like over the next week and im already hearing it. People in communities are saying im seeing testing now. Im seeing more testing now. So we can get a better handle on the number of cases in communities, but people still, whether youre positive, negative, whether you get a test or not, if you have got respiratory symptoms, you probably have an Infectious Disease of sorts. Its just as likely to be the flu as covid, but you should stay at home. Things we can do, social distancing and washing your hands. Dr. Adams, thank you so much for the helpful information. We appreciate your time, thank you. Thank you. George . Wonderful to have him. Love how he said poppop. Havent heard that in a while. I know, its been a while. You have been doing. Giving me the jitters. Whats going on there . Right now, were going to get to our gma cover story and the big question on the minds of so many this morning, how to see your doctor when were supposed to be social distancing. The answer is telemedicine, using your phone to see your physician. Its now exploding in popularity and amy is here with more. Good morning, amy. Hey, good morning, michael. Yes, sitting in the Doctors Office in the emergency room surrounded by people there for the exact same reason, you are sick. But, now when social distancing is the biggest weapon we have in fighting covid19, telemedicine could save lives. Telemedicine, or seeing a doctor remotely via video, phone or text, has never really picked up steam until now. In a crisis such as covid19, our goal is to really benefit the public to decrease the risk of infection, and telemedicine is a perfect opportunity to do that. Reporter it allows those who are immunocompromised or quarantined to get doctors advice from home. It can also keep patients who believe they may have the coronavirus out of the emergency room where they could spread the disease to others. Some are just looking for reassurance like 54yearold sharon from maryland. Dr. Mia is able to examine sharon over the video call. Sharon feels her neck for tender lumps, takes in deep breaths. Can you give me an ahh. Ahh. Reporter and right now some companies are seeing huge increases in tele health visits. Multicare, the Largest Community based Health System in the state of washington, says its seen a 1,300 increase in average daily visit volume this month versus the last six months. Right now our most common visit is upper respiratory infection which is common cold, sinusitis, fever, cough. A lot of these are symptoms you see with covid. Reporter 80 of diagnoses are made through taking a patients history. Here, no . While i might not be able to listen to someones lungs i can look at their respiratory pattern if theyre breathing fast. We can have the patient take their own heart rate. Reporter sharons visit took ten minutes. The reassurance is awesome. Thats number one. And number two, me not having to go into a place that has germs around it, if i dont have to expose myself, thats terrific. New york state now has the most coronavirus cases in the country and so Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced that all Insurance Companies will waive copays for telemedicine treatments. We may see that happening in other states as well. George . Okay, amy, thanks. Lets get to dr. Jen ashton and her team. Lets talk about this telemedicine idea. How can people get started with it . I think its already taking off impromptu because of the times were living in. First check with your doctor or provider to see if theyre able to do it and those providers also have to check with their Insurance Companies. Not all Insurance Companies in the past would reimburse providers for a telemedicine consult but ive already been doing this for a while with my patients. So you will be seeing more of it and i think it has a massive potential here. Lets get some questions from our viewers. Brenda asks, if i suspect i have the virus, do i need to get tested or seen by a doctor right away . Can i wait it out at home until i get better . This is whats really important, george, and this really evolved over the weekend. A lot of people are developing mild symptoms, and again as were seeing the kinks worked out in the testing process, its still hard to get tests, right . Six months ago if you would have stayed home, you should do that now with the assumption or presumption that you may, in fact, have coronavirus. What does that mean . That means you stay home and isolate yourself because you are now ill, and as much as you can from the people in your home, in your apartment for at least a twoweek period. If you have just had a contact exposure, that is not right now an indication for testing. We have to be clear about that. But, it is an indication for selfquarantine, so when you selfquarantine, meaning youve been in touch with someone or contact with someone who you know is positive, a confirmed case, you should selfquarantine with the assumption that you are infected. That means you dont go out for dinner. You dont go to the gym. You really hunker down. Thats really, really important. Heres a question from rebecca. Im 69 and having complete Knee Replacement surgery next week. Should i postpone it . That is the recommendation right now by the American College of surgeons. They put out an official statement on friday saying they are recommending the postponement or rescheduling of all elective procedures and were seeing major hospitals and medical centers follow in suit, including by the way screening procedures like mammograms or colonoscopies. Postpone them for the short term. This is an Emergency Preparedness disaster situation in this country and it is important for people with elective screening procedures or elective surgeries to really do their part in unburdening the health care system. Important information, jen. Thanks very much. Keep your questions on the coronavirus coming in for dr. Jen. Tweet us with the askgma. Robin . All right, george. Thank you. Beyond the medical concerns so many of us are dealing with anxiety and stress as we try to navigate our lives during these uncertain times. Here with us now is dr. Janet taylor to bring us some peace of mind this morning. Thank you for being with us. The anxiety, i dont have to tell you about that. You go to a store, grocery store, the shelves are empty. Good luck trying to find something even like toilet paper and you say anxiety and that goes hand in hand. Absolutely because our brains keep us safe and healthy and right now theres so much uncertainty that stress and anxiety comes from that. So we try to establish control by getting that last bottle of purell or filling our grocery cart, but the reality is our control is not going to come from that. Our control is going to come from us having more information and then retraining our brain to relax. How do we maintain a healthy mindset . We have to reset because our brains are our biggest ally in that sense, but if we understand when were really stressed it taxes so much energy from our body so we have to recover which means this is a time to get good sleep, to practice healthy eating, and focus on our diet and get exercise. Also, its important that you have an information plan which is that you have your medications, you know your insurance status, if youre underinsured or uninsured, where you can get tested, keep a list of medications and reach out to elderly or family members to give them that information. Lastly, you want to practice healthy coping. Its great to go well, now nobody is going to go to bars but historically well cope in unhealthy ways. We want to be around friends and hang out and drink, but meditate. Practice positive thinking. But you know what, you alluded to this a little bit, the loneliness though, thats part of it. In fact, google said its higher searched now, loneliness, than ever before, so how do you deal with that, the feeling of isolation . The key is to practice connectedness and togetherness while distancing. So you can connect on social media. Use those apps that help you connect and check on other people. Establish whether youre lonely or bored because theres a real disruption of our structure now, so how do you reintegrate that into your schedule. Understand that doing other things for other people can connect you and now you can work on new hobbies and interests. Thats right. I like how people are saying why dont we call it physical distancing, not social distancing. You want to keep a physical distance but you still want to find different ways to socialize. Also part of this, janet, is the fact that we know its going to end at some point. We just dont know when that is, and that adds to the anxiety. Theres no question because again its uncertain. Our brain doesnt like that. One of the things is to anticipate. Were in this for the long haul. Now so reestablish your sense of purpose while you have this time, your gifts, your values, what you give to other people, and really use this to connect with yourself and others, and then know that this well get through this and use your experience from this thinking about other times that youve gotten through stressful periods and build on it knowing that well be okay. Thats a good point there. That is so good. This too shall pass. We have had times in all of our lives that we thought, oh my goodness, this is never going to end, and it does. I know were going to be checking with you from time to time. Thank you for being here. Thank you, robin. For more ways to reduce anxiety, visit goodmorningamerica. Com and we hope that you do that. Now were going to talk about preparing your kitchen for coronavirus. With more and more americans staying home many are stocking up on items. Were here with bon appetit food editor at large, carly lalli. She has her list of pantry essenti essentials. People are stocking up. Big time. Its one thing to stock up and its another thing to be wasteful. How can we stock up without being wasteful . Dont go out right now and spend hundreds of dollars on food that you dont already enjoy, use or could put aside for a future emergency. So look at what you already keep in the house and replenish those things. So first up you want to make sure youve got cooking fats. You cant really make anything without some oil, some butter. Butter stores great in the freezer. Everybody is talking about rice. Get your grains, your quinoa. Cook those in batches, keep them in the freezer. And then all of your basics, pasta, canned tomatoes. What are things that last on time that we should have on hands . Hard cheeses, salami, jerky, those things are going to hold up better than fresh meat or protein. Got to have condiments. Were going to be eating a lot of tuna is a lid salad. Onions, potatoes, garlic, keep it in a cool, dark place and thats going to last a long time. I know about cheese. Were cooking Grilled Cheese sandwiches for everybody later at home. Good. What are some of the fresh items to stock up on . Dont forget about produce. Everyone is going nuts on pantry stuff. Theres a lot of vegetables and fruits that will last a long time. Broccoli, cabbage, leafy greens, citrus, apples, oranges, keep that in the fridge weeks and weeks. You can do big batches of that stuff. Youre going to crave it and its a lot of nutrition. A lot of people are saying if im going to be quarantined or distanced from everyone, i need some sweets. Absolutely. Whats up on the dessert side . If were hunkering down, there should be some pleasure. Make sure youve got your baking staples, baking soda, baking powder, jar of nutella. I like to have chocolate that you could snack on but also chop up and make some chocolate chip cookies with the kids. Well, i guarantee you some of our staff is going to take that home today. Thank you so much. Thanks for having me. Coming up, the show must go on. How broadway star Laura Benanti is making sure students still shine despite the quarantine. Good morning, everyone.
