Because we still do not have a standard, centralized, coordinated plan to take our nation through this response. Time is running out because the virus is still spreading everywhere. Reporter bright says early inaction by the government cost lives, especially those of health care workers. He described the moment he realized the federal response was falling short, detailing an email he got from a manufacturer saying their supply of n95 masks was decimated. And he said, were in deep [ bleep ]. The world is. And we need to act. And i pushed that forward to the highest levels i could in hhs, got no response. Lets begin with the new alert issued by the cdc warning doctors about the mystery illness affecting children thats possibly linked to covid19. Weve reported symptoms of this inflammatory disease include fever, rash, swelling, and red eyes. Many of the cases in new york were seen four to six weeks after coronavirus cases reached their peak. Whats the takeaway from this new alert from the cdc, and whats the message you want to send to parents . First of all, thank you so much for having me. This what is called a multisystem inflammatory syndrome that is similar to kawasaki syndrome is something that the cdc sent an alert out for us physicians to report specific criteria. For parents, if your child feels unwell and is sick, go to your pediatrician, whether its a telemedicine visit or to an emergency department, to get checked out. Usually these children or young adults who have this appear very ill. So it would be very identifiable for the parents. All right. Lets switch to the race for the vaccine. We just got a Progress Report from researchers at Oxford University and its pretty encouraging. What are we learning and whats the timeline looking like . Its an excellent question, and i know we all want an effective vaccine as soon as possible. I think that theres plenty of viruses out there, theres some viruses that very much want a vaccine developed, covid19 is one of those. Some of those prior viruses weve yet to find a vaccine and its been decades. What this particular study shows is there is promise a vaccine is possible but its still in its early stages. Hard to say what the timeline is. I think i would be hopeful to say that well have a vaccine thats effective by the winter of 2021. And thats a guess. We really dont have as much information. Dr. Gharahbaghian, a lot of people are eager to start traveling again. A top member of congress is calling on airlines to only book planes at twothirds of capacity for social distancing. It comes as one Infectious Disease expert says he actually believes he got infected on a plane even while wearing a mask. He believes that he was infected possibly because he touched his eyes after touching a surface. Personally, do you feel comfortable flying on a plane right now . Well, im not going to get on a plane unless i must. And thats what the cdc guidelines and recommendations provide us. Unless its essential travel, theres no need to fly. And of course, wearing a mask, washing your hands, not touching your face, especially your eyes, your nose, and your mouth. And if you do have to travel, then i would probably recommend not eating food with your hands, especially if you havent washed your hands beforehand. But there is a risk. And first and foremost, if youre sick, then dont travel at all. For any reason. Its very important for us to be able to take care of each other, and the first way to do that is to not go out in public or socialize with anybody if youre sick. Our thanks to dr. Gharahbaghian there. As she mentioned, the concern is maybe someone is sick, then they board the plane and youre in this confined space. Another major concern is the food trays, contaminated objects like seat belts, bathroom sinks. You know those airline magazines that everybody touches and puts right back . Yeah.
