Highway early this afternoon. The sunset solidarity march began at sloat and protesters marched to lincoln. Demonstrators have gathered again in vallejo to protest the death of george floyd. The city, however, reeling and really on edge after reports of looting over the weekend. Last night city hall was broken into. A fire was set on the first floor. That caused the sprinklers to go off. The citys mayor says it is now uninhabitable in the building, and the police chief is really appalled at what he saw happening. This was a coordinated attack by organized individuals seeking to cause destruction and harm to our community. And no such acts will be tolerated. Vallejo did issue a curfew last night that started at 8 00 p. M. , lasting until 5 00 a. M. It is in place until further notice. In danville, almost every single business on harts avenue is boarded up. You see messages supporting george floyd sprayed on some of the plywood. There has not been any looting in danville. A peaceful protest shut down traffic yesterday. A second march is scheduled for tomorrow. A major expansion today in curfew orders all around the bay area. This map shows the cities and counties impacted along with the times. Today san mateo and Contra Costa County supervisors voted to impose curfews. Contra costa countys curfew goes from 8 00 in the evening to 5 00 in the morning. The one in San Mateo County runs from 8 30 to 5 00. The Sonoma County town of windsor also instituted a curfew starting at 9 00 tonight. Those areas now join San Francisco and Alameda County as well as the cities of santa rosa, vallejo, san jose and santa clara. You see the times on your screen. Life in the east bay suburbs has changed dramatically in the last few days with more communities adding unprecedented curfews. Abc7 News Reporter Leslie Brinkley looks at the impact of the looting and the subsequent curfews, what theyre having the impact on the businesses. Boarded up windows. Tear gas. Curfews. Its all unfamiliar territory for east bay cities like walnut creek, lafayette, orinda and danville after sundays shocking round ofinere wereome vio tolus hebarricade the entrance to thi parking garage to keep people from rushing inside, maybe throwing things off the upper level. He said two men rushed him. One punched him in the back. The other took his cell phone, smashed it, and then stole it. Thats not supposed to happen anywhere. Its a bunch of crap that these thieves and thugs come out when there is legitimate protests going on. Covid virus was bad enough. Now we add this . Gee. Ironically today, the Contra Costa Health department announced Small Retail Stores can reopen tomorrow. But businesses spent upwards of a thousand dollars, money they dont have to spare, to board up windows. Its pretty much like what punch next. This Restaurant Owner says he has been forced to send employees home early as he stands guard over his business tlch was the fear of covid and now the fear of looting. I feel like there is decreased traffic to walnut creek. I think people feel they are nervous they could get trapped on the freeway or trapped in town with streets blocked off, and that impacts the business tremendously. Businesses hope this isnt the last straw. We hope its a brief setback. I think that many of them for sure are just barely hanging on. Walnut creek today changed their curfew to 8 00 p. M. The sameurwsed i orinda that imposed dinner takeout service. The county board of supervisors voted to impose an emergency curfew countywide Effective Immediately from 8 00 p. M. To 5 00 a. M. Im Leslie Brinkley, abc7 news. So are the latest restrictions infringing on our First Amendment rights . Abc7 News Reporter stephanie sierra spoke with protesters who were recently arrested. Stephanie . Yes, larry, weve heard from protesters arrested shortly ater the curfew was enforced in san jose. And its not just the lack of warning theyre upset about, but what they consider a violation of their First Amendment rights. Black lives are under attack, what do we do . Stand up, fight back mandated curfews enforced across most of the bay area. An unprecedented response to handle violent protests. When have we ever seen this before . Protesters like alex lee picturesed here are now asking that question after his arrest in san jose sunday night. Police have rolled up on to the curb in their police suv without warning to say hey, get the hell out of here, curfew is in everything. They stepped up to me and said hey, can i talk to you and grabbed me and said youre under arrest. Lee said he didnt know about the mandatory curfew that went into effect sunday at 8 00 p. M. But he describes his arrest as abrupt and aggressive. Were trying to explain what we were doing. We werent doing anything wrong. But they wouldnt visit. They said youre out here. There are no exceptions. Youre being arrested. The aclu of Northern California has called for an end to these curfews across the state. Criticizing this is the wrong way to handle disruptions to what have been otherwise peaceful protests. Im very frustrated that this curfew is used as an excuse to arrest protesters and repress freedom of expression. According to lee, the protest he attended sunday night was peacef peaceful. But i was in the back of the police wagon with my hands zip tied behind my back. Another man was thrown in there, and he was just watching what was happening from the doorstep of his apartment on fourth street. He was walked out to see i was being arrested and they arrested him. These arrests come as the board of supervisors announced a resolution that would prohibit a history of misconduct. Rs with Chesa Boudin Says there is a need for a statewide policy. When we give Police Officers a gown and a badge and the power to arrest and the power to use force, it is essential that we vet those individuals and that we hold them to the highest standards. And this legislation is a step towards doing just that. We asked the San Francisco d. A. s office if any protesters violating this curfew, if theyll be charged. And we were told its possible they will be carefully reviewing each case. Larry . Stephanie, do we know how many people in total have been arrested for violating the curfew orders if we look all across the bay area . Larry, we are looking into those numbers as we speak. Ive reached auto every city and county in the bay area. But information is limited right now. Just a few minutes ago, we did get a tweet from the Alameda County Sheriffs Office who said 122 people have been arrested for more than 380 felony crimes. But so far we do not know of any arrests being made in orinda and santa clara. We are still waiting to hear back from San Francisco, san jose, and san leandro. So well keep a close eye on this. Larry, kristen, back to you. Thank you, stephanie. Just minutes ago, we received an update on that huge march and protest that took place last night in oakland, the one that started at oakland tech high school. In fact, we showed you live pictures yesterday afternoon and into the evening. The march and the protest itself, they were peaceful, and actually inspirational to a lot of the folks who were on hand, but afterwards, it ended and police ended up citing about 60 people. So were talking 60 people who broke away from what was a peaceful demonstration estimated to be about 15,000 people in total. They came out. They showed out in great numbers, and even my own daughter participated in that march. That peaceful march marched all the way down to 14th and broadway and entered into franco gallo plaza where they had speeches, where young people spoke out about the Racial Injustice that theyve seen across this country, and they exercised their First Amendment right. And they did it peacefully. After concluding their event, those young people departed from the downtown area. Say about a thousand people broke off from that main group, and thats when a few incidents began. We saw tear gas that was deployed. You can see in the shots right now. Police say that happened after people threw rocks and bottles at officers. In san jose, protesters gathered at city hall to not only demand justice for george floyd, but to also hold local Police Accountable for their actions during recent protests downtown. Abc7 News Reporter chris nguyen has that s in the capital of Silicon Valley, a Community Comes together to protest ste suoundi of george floyd. We believe in a world where black people can live and love fully, pursue their dreams, care for their families, and shape and build power in their workplaces and communities without fear. At a peaceful rally organized by the san jose Silicon Valley naacp, many took to the mic to share their anger over the events of the past week. Demonstrators are demanding independent civilian Police Oversight in san jose after they say police were too quick to use tear gas and rubber bullets during the protests downtown over the weekend. I saw a defiant, courageous, bold energy of the Community Led by young people of color that had had enough and were shutting all down [ applause ] until they were heard. This all comes as concerns grow over bad actors online using social media to cause disruption. Whether its a bad actor or cyber criminals, they thrive in this environment because people are really in a situation where their logic is down, the emotions are high. So they just push all these agenda and a lot of people be hurting. Data analysts say social media algorithms are cultivating division at a time when people need to share their impatience about whats going on. Its really concerning that there are opportunists really taking advantage of this to try to sow divisiveness and violence and destruction. Despite the discommunity leaders say they carry on for change. I want you youngeople to know something about protest. We need you do it peacefully, because the power and the peaceful power. You can come again the next day. And you can come again the next day. In san jose, chris nguyen, abc7 news. All right. Hundreds of people in san jose vandalism done to local businesses in recent days. The volunteers we spoke to echo mayor sam liccardos message from monday. Starting tonight through friday, the Transit Agency will halt all bus service, meaning nobody will be permitted to board a bus from 7 30 to 5 00 in the morning. That is ac transit rules at this point. Most other transit agencies are not altering their service because of the curfews that includes muni and bart. They will be running. An making t making plans for summer . What you need to know. Im spencer christian. Our midweek heat spike is under way. Its going to be even hotter tomorrow. Ill give you a look at the today is tuesday, june 2nd, day 78 of our coronavirus shelter in place in the bay area. Santa clara county is loosening some restrictions this friday. Outdoor dining will be allowed as well as instore outdoor ceremonies and religious gatherings of 25 people or less. This afternoon, Public Health officer dr. Sarah cody talked about the move. The opening that our amendments are enabling this friday are pretty significant, and i think that were going to need to give ourselves at least three weeks to assess what the impact of this move and additional activity will be on how the virus is spreading in our county. Dr. Cody said the county has made Good Progress on having adequate testing and contact tracing. Outbreaks in Skilled Nursing facilities have been contained and hospitals remain well within capacity. Time now for consumer news. 7 on your sides Michael Finney here with a look at the headlines. Hi, michael. Hey, you guys. Ive got some interesting statistics here. The negative effect on the u. S. Economy of the coronavirus is expected to hang around and linger for more than a decade. Check this out. That is according to the congressional budget office. The pandemics economic fallout is expected to drop the nations Gross Domestic National Product about 8 trillion over the next ten years. Americans who have accidentally lost or destroyed their stimulus payment Prepaid Debit Card will no longer have to pay a fee to get a replacement there was a 7. 50 fee to replace the cards, be now money network, which distributes the card says the first reissued card will be free. The replacement fee will only be charged for each card after that. Now some people didnt realize the stimulus money was coming on a debit card rather than a check. So they threw the debit cards away. Thats why were seeing this change. American airlines will no longerfully out of Oakland International airport. The airline has only one flight originally originating, i should say, there. Tomorrows 12 41 flight will be the very last. Passengers affected by the change will receive a refund or can fly in or out of either San Francisco or san jose. Now 7 on your side reached out the american today and received the following statement. Were constantly evaluating our network to meet customer demand. Unfortunately, our service in oakland was not profitable. Were going to see a lot more of this as time goes on. Things arent going to go back to exactly normal as you two have been reporting constantly, and that certainly applies to the airline industry. Oh, for sure. Thank you, michael. Temperatures heating up today. But how do you even begin to make your summer plans with everything that is going on right now . Abc7 reporter Leslie Brinkley asked an epidemiologists at Uc Berkeley School of Public Health, somebody who is digging deep into all the latest research on covid19. We have to face summer by new rules now. What would this epidemiologist do . Would you go to a public pool . I personally would be prepared to go swim in a pool, but i would be cautious about the exposures i had to other people getting to the pool, getting out of the pool, getting dressed afterwards. To me, those are the risk factors. Would you go to a beach . We know the sunlight is bad for this virus. Being outdoors is bad for this virus. Less likely to be transmission. So i think if people can be on a beach and still social distance, can still show good intelligent behavior around mask use, i dont see a problem with being on the beach. Would you travel by plane . My own personal view is that it is possible to travel safely on a plane and through airports. With intense hand washing and mask wearing, would you take a road trip . The car is safer than going to the airport and getting on a plane because all we really need to negotiate is stopping for gas or using the bathroom. He says opt for bathrooms with a single stall like in a service station. I think if one can avoid a lot of people crowded into one bathroom at one time, that would be preferable. Would you stay in a hotel . I think in fact the risks associated with staying in a hotel are probably quite small. He says wiping down surfaces yourself would help. Camping may be safe, but sending your child to a summer day camp gets complicated. I think again, there is some risk associated with exposure to more people, of course. So, you know, you may be more willing to take that risk if you have no one in your household who is elderly. All of our summer experiences will be touched by the virus. In walnut creek, im Leslie Brinkley, abc7 news. Oh, for sure. All right. It is time to start thinking about summer, though, because its starting to feel that way too, spencer. Im not hearing you guys, but i hope youre hearing me. So im going to start telling you about the weather. It is really hot out there right now. Weve got sunny skies from coast to inland. Check out the 24hour temperature change. It is 10 to 16 degrees warmer in most bay area locations right now than at this time yesterday. Some of these temperatures im showing you right now are current, but they may be the high temperatures for day so far in most of these places. 75 right now in San Francisco. Mid to upper 80s at oakland, redwood city, san jose. 93 at gilroy. 69 at pacifica. And on we go to look for emeryville, looking westward. And its lets see, low 90s right now in santa rosa, petaluma. 99 at fairfield. 95 at concord and 93 at livermore. From sutro tower looking over San Francisco, these are our forecast features. The heat will peak tomorrow and record highs for tomorrows date are possible. It will be cooler at the coast, and a little cooler around the bay on thursday, but still hot inland. And much cooler and windier i might add in all locations friday and saturday. Heat advisory remains in effect, or i should say will be in effect for virtually all of the bay area. Tomorrow from 10 00 a. M. To 9 00 a. M. And in solano county, that heat advisory is already in eff p. M. Thursday. Of course, under these conditions, heatrelated illness is possible. Here is our forecast animation showing a little patchy fog, some thin marine layer developing during the overnight hours. But basically, tomorrow is going to be a sunny day all across the region. And tonight will be a mainly clear night, low temperatures not so low. Mainly low to mid 60s in many locations. So its going to be mild to warm overnight. And then sizzling inland again tomorrow with high temperatures in the 100s. 100 degrees to about 103 in places like livermore, concord, fairfield, antioch, cloverdale. The protest comes a day after protesters were cleared out of a park near the white house with tear gas so that President Trump may make his way to st. Johns church. As the protests continue to sweep the country, the political stakes may be rising for both the president as well as his critics. Experts here in the bay area watching those developments closely. As protests engulf washington and the rest of the country, President Trump is staking out his own ground, declaring himself the law and order president. I am taking immediate president ial action to stop the violence and restore security and safety in america. To many historians, the words have a familiar echo, vietnam war protests raging in 1968, Richard Nixon rode the same theme to victory, and many politicians have emulated his playbook over the decades. But San Francisco state Political Science professor Jason Mcdaniels says its not that simple. Nixons idea of law and order hold the incumbents accountable for this lawlessness, quote unquote, and vote for me, trump is going to have a hard time doing that since he is the incumbent. He says that is the situation that george h. W. Bush faced during the los angeles riots that followed the videotaped beating of rodney king and the unrest actually presented an opportunity for his opponent. Bill clinton came to los angeles. The National Guard was staging as well. Bill clinton came and made that a part of the campaign and sort of showed a different kind of message. And other observers argue that the staunch law and order message drew much of its early power from a kind of racial code. Ultimately, it becomes a way of telling White America that we have these people in control. But Professor James taylor of the university of San Francisco points to the policeinvolved shooting death of oscar grant at an oakland bart station a decade ago as a turning point. He says the power of cell phone video and other media is reaching a broad audience, and the result can be seen in the diversity of young students. His family took part in a massive march through downtown houston that an estimated 20,000 thereasnoer a ptes demonstrator gathered outside the state capitol. Demonstrators streamed through the streets of los angeles this afternoon. There is another big crowd in new york city as well. The big apple has been hit especially hard by looting, and the states governor, while pleading for peace, says he understands the anger. Theyre outraged. And by the way, i agree with them. What happened to mr. Floyd was a disgrace. It was repug manhattan to ameri repugnant to america. It was repugnant to any good policing strategy or approach. A public memorial for george floyd is planned for thursday. His funeral is set for next week in texas. Emotions are running high right now over the issues of racism and equality, and even covid19. Joining me now is michael stanton, Health Sciences professor and clinical professor from cal state east bay in hayward to talk about some of these issues. Thank you so much, dr. Stanton. Happy to be here, thanks. First we had covid. Now racial inequality and violence playing out. Talk about the cumulative impact on our psyche and mental illness. Yeah, you know, this is a really tough time for people right now. And i think its important for us to remember that in this time we should be thinking about, really, three things. Selfcare, taking care of our community and think about the larger Historical Context. What do you mean thinking about the larger Historical Context . Will that make us feel better or less stressed . Yeah. So when we think about the Historical Context about the influenza of 1918 or the trials and struggles that our ancestors went through, it helps us realize that we as a people have been through so much. And you know, that we are capable of getting through this too. I can see how that can make us feel a little better, but thats a collective thing that well recover as a society. But what about individually . What about if i or someone i love individually am at a breaking point right now . Yeah, i mean, like i said, this is a really tough time for people right now. Whether youre someone who is a victim of racial violence or a storekeeper whose windows were smashed, its tough for a lot of people. I think its important to remember that what i tell my clients is that there are a lot of things that you can do for yourself to stay healthy during this time. Things like, for example, a good diet, eating healthy foods. We know that oreos are bad for your weight maybe, but its also true that eating vegetables and fruits and whole grains is really good for your mood as well. Getting outside and exercising. We know that being outside is helps you get vitamin d, which actually fights coronavirus as well. So and then id say the last is sleep. Making sure you have a regular sleep time. There are some things that you can do, those three things just to really make yourself resilient to whatever youre going through in your daily life. What about the last of the three tenets that you just proposed, taking care of others, your neighbors, your community . How can we channel the emotions we feel and turn into it a positive thing into helping others . Yeah, we can do a lot right now. As a nation, were really hurting. Its important to remember that there are a lot of things that we can do. For example, we know that being involved in our community through local elections and at your school or your workplace, joining a Community Organization that involves itself with keeping our leaders, our police force accountable, those actually have incredible amount of impact in our community. Sometimes more so than on the national policies. So and just helping our neighbors. Reaching out is actually good for our Mental Health as well. Some studies show that, for example, being on social media particularly for too long actually leads to depression and negative emotions, really setting some times for us to stop and turn off our phones and our computers and instead focusing on discussions, engaging with people maybe on zoom, or at a distance can really be healing. All right. Professor michael stanton, cal state east bay with some great ideas for selfcare and taking care of our Mental Health. Appreciate it. Thank you. Thank you. And tonight, abc7 news will present a live prime time special, america in pain what comes next. Many of the images weve been seeing over the past week have been really tough. In fact, disturbing. It can be overwhelming, especially for children. They need you to be their guide, their protector. Five, teach. How to relax. Be the calm in the middle of the storm. It is okay to protest. It is okay to express your First Amendment right, to speak up against issues that people feel are unjust. But parents also and the older people on the streets need to know that there are young people out there, and theyre watching, and theyre absorbing everything that you do. So its important that we be good role models to these young people. Miriam hernandez, abc7 news. Hard topic to talk to kids about. Weve been having a lot of the conversations around our dinner table surrounding this, because my kids are teens, old enough to think what can they do, how does this impact them . But ama, your daughter is so much younger. Is she asking you about it in some way . Has she seen it in some way or sensed maybe that youre not well because of it . No. She is too little, kristen. She is only 2. So she is not watching the news. She is not on social media at all. There is no day care. So its not like anyone is really talking about it in front of her. Her Language Skills are just developing. So were trying to keep things as normal as possible around the house since she covid, whats covid to her . She just cant even conceptu conceptualize that. But for people who have kids who are a little older, i think a lot of great points are made there that you have to listen and see what they need and how you can help provide those tools that they need to help deal with this. Yeah. Great point. And spencer, youve got grandkids. So im sure you know what kind of conversations are being had with them. There a way to explain inequity on a level that they understand . What are you guys talking about . Its a daily challenge, kristen. My grandsons are only 5 and 3. They are just becoming aware of different skin colors and things like that. So they ask about that. But theyre not aware yet of whats happening on the news with the violent demonstrations and all that. Or with the unequal the deaths of innocent people at the hands of Excessive Force by policemen. So were having conversations with them about race and about how god made people different colors, and this is who we are and this is who they are, and were all equal, that sort of thing. My children, though, my children are in their 40s, and i still have ongoing conversations with my son about, you know, being stopped for no apparent reason when he is driving, and being very, very cautious to say and do all the right things so you dont invite any kind of overreaction from the police. Its a terrible thing to have to talk about, because it makes it sounds like im saying all Police Officers are bad, which we obviously know isnt true, but there are enough bad ones out there who treat people of color unfairly that my son and i continue to have this ongoing conversation. Yeah. Its difficult for all of us to navigate right now. Major expansion today in curfew orders around the by area. I want to show you a map that shows the cities and the counties impacted along with the times. A short time ago, palo alto put in a curfew. 8 30 p. M. To 5 00 in the morning. San mateo and in contra costa supervisors impose curfews. Windsor instituted a curfew, 9 00 tonight. It starts. Those areas now join San Francisco and Alameda County as well as santa rosa, vallejo, san jose, and santa clara. It seems at this point that the curfews are really one of the few tools we have to just keep things under control when night falls. I just want to make one point because it seems that we may be missing something here in all this with the groups of protesters and how things can take a turn for the worse. Youve got people out there protesting, they just want change. You also have the looters out there who are just trying to take advantage of the situation to get free stuff and smash things. But there is another group that really concerns me, because it appears as though there are organized groups of agitators who are just trying to fan the flames of turmoil. Ive seen three videos online of white people putting bricks out for others to use as weapons against the police. You know, who knows who these groups are, but they seem to be wellorganized. To me, thats a real concern, because once you have the frenzy of everybody running in all these different directions, the message gets completely lost when were talking about social injustice. There is a lot of misinformation in this direction out there, larry. Youre absolutely right. All right. Today is blackout tuesday. A day promoted by activists to observe, mourn, and bring about policy change in the wake of the death of george floyd. Major music labels as well as apple music and spotify are calling for accountability and change. Los gatos based netflix, amazon and hulu have all posted messages of solidarity on their official social media. Even retailers like lucky brands closed today in solidarity. But there is some criticism. Activists point out posting a bunch of tags clogs up channels of information on search engines. So theyre saying use a different so that people dont drown out the black lives matter messages. That should still be seen. And i would just point that out that i think its great that these companies are doing it, but its not a oneday thing. It cant be a simple gesture one time only. It has to be consistent in the way they support minority communities and communities where theyre suffering economically. And that takes a longterm commitment. Spencer . It does. It does. Im still encouraged, though, to see any effort to promote solidarity and unity, no matter how corny or simple it may seem. Its a good message to put out there right now. What do you think, ama . Well, you know, its interesting because i actually just saw something on instagram where its telling people telling black people not to blackout because its another form of oppression, and that people who arent black should blackout or at least amplify some other black posts. So there is a debate. Some think this is the right thing to do. Some think this is another form of oppression there so much to sort through here. Yeah. Its really confusing.
