I spoke with councilman steve fletcher. Councilman fletcher, thank you for joining us. Let us say our thoughts have been in minneapolis as you deal with his death and the unrest that followed. Why do you want to disband the minneapolis Police Department . And what comes next . Weve looked at ways to reform this department and do not think it is possible. We have met resistance at every turn when we attempted reforms. We need to form a new Public Safety approach, that will actually keep people safe and align with our citys values, and doesnt cause the type of harm that our Current Department is causing. The stats show that Violent Crime has been down in your city and the crime rate is still high for your population. Those there are those that say they need the place. To that, you say . We need a comprehensive Public Safety approach. It has not correlated to police staffing. It hasnt necessarily worked to have police. We spend close to 200 million a year on police. As you noted, crime has fluctuated and the strategies are not necessarily been effective. So, it is not that we are dismantling a system that was working. We are dismantling a system that wasnt working well for us. Seeing if we can design something better. I believe that we can. I took a reform approach. I believed that we could fix the system. You know, i have atoning to do for taking as long as i did to come around to the kind of dramatic change that needs to happen. Because everything that we tried to do, we would get resistance from the federation and ignored by the officers. We would get noncompliance with the rules that we passed. Everything that we were trying to do wasnt working. Your mayor, jacob frey, asked for more officers last year to handling whats happening in the city. Earlier, he was booed from a protest. Our thanks to the councilman there. Its not unprecedented. The city of camden, new jersey, did it in 2013. I covered that story for our abc station in philly when that happened. Now, camden is being used as a model when it comes to starting over. When it comes to dismantling and starting over essentially and having a major reform. When it comes to the headline people say it seems radical and crazy and it turns political really fast. I want to read you something from the New York Times over the weekend.
