The coronavirus pandemic has had a terrible impact, obviously, on call businesses. 110,000 have already closed across the country and seven million more are at risk of the same fate. To address that, the Small Business administration is handing out billions of dollars in loans to help Companies Pay their employees. But the i team is investigating many reports of possible fraud. I Team Reporter dan noys has a story you will only see tonight. Its been only four months since President Trump signed the cares act. I wanted that to be a good signature. Reporter that set up the Paycheck Protection Program and five million Small Businesses have already received more than half a trillion dollars in low interest loans that may be forgiven. It is meant to keep employees on payroll while the businesses are impacted by covid19. So it is our tax dollars. This is our tax dollars. The Small Business administration tells me so much money went out the door so quickly, that provided an opportunity for possible fraud. Some abc 7 viewers checked the list of businesses who received ppp loans and contacted me with questions about an applicant from the south bay who used 88 in his Company Names. 88 cloud computing, 88 enterprise services, 88 investment empire. The owner claimed to have 48 employeed and received between 350,000 to 1 million for each of those businesses. I ran the Company Names and they all come back to this 39yearold. This is his picture from linkedin. Tran told me his businesses are real. He insisted he has 48 employees but when i asked to see his operation he hung up. I ran the address listed as the headquarters for those businesses and turns out its his mothers house. I stopped by there several times and never found anyone home and i repeatedly called him and texted him. Im waiting for that call back. I also went to the home in san jose and found people lounging on his kauch. Does he own this house . Yeah. Is he here . No. I walked up the driveway at his sara toga home. I work at channel 7. Why do you need him . Im doing a story on him. I never heard back. The Small Business administration also had questions for him. Records show he formed those four companies in the last couple of months, well after the pandemic started, and that would violate ppp guidelines. Ppp program was for businesses that were already in business before covid19. Miriam explains the sba guarantees the loans but it is up to banks and lending institutions to process the lending applications and review a businesss financials. Three of the online lenders he used, fundbox, harvest and lendistry did not return my comments. Obviously sba takes this seriously and any type of fraud or abuse will be investigated and will not be tolerated. The fbi has formed a ppp Fraud Working Group with the Small Business administration and opened nearly 100 investigations with more than 42 million of potential fraud identified so far. The sba tells me tran was on their radar before our call occ occurred. And well say on it. The oakland as hosted their Season Opener tonight four months late because of the pandemic. Were gonna do this peacefully. Announcer speaking out. Hear me when i say that it is time for me to speak my mind. Announcer wanting their voices to be heard. I feel like its my duty to stand up. Ive always been a fighter because of the color of my skin, im constantly treated as if ive done something wrong. Announcer hear us now, a special episode of tamron hall. Never giving up on me black lives matter, then, now, and will always matter. Welcome to a very special edition of the tamron hall show from my house. 2013, the cofounders of the black lives Matter Movement gave us the phrase black lives matter. Three women, alicia garza, patrisse cullors, opal tometi. Thank you. I know a lot of people have thought that phrase was alienating, that somehow it meant that other people did not matter, and perhaps the deliberate misunderstanding of that phrase is how we got here. Can you hear me now . You might remember that commercial. It was all about, can you connect while talking . We now know the connection in discussing the issue of race and Police Brutality was somehow interrupted over and over again, and now we know we always knew that it was a matter of life and death. Its been the silent, and sometimes loud, plea from black people, the can you hear me now . When will you hear me . How do i get your attention . That was unheard. And then we saw this incredible vision over the past few weeks, a sea of young people from all backgrounds who said, collectively, were gonna break through the noise. The 24 7 rightful concerns of covid19, the spiraling economy, all stopped because their revolution would be televised and we would have to watch. Theyre the generation of kids who watched the towers of 9 11 fall. Many of them suffered from ptsd, anxiety attacks, because 19 years, imagine. They watched the images of the towers fall. Some of them had parents there. They learned about it in school, they watched tv, 24hour news cycle, and it tore at their core. But the cycling of the images of the towers falling had its impact. I compare that to what black children have had to watch for many, many years, for 25 years, of images of people dying on camera. Now, when i was a kid, we had a photo that was often shown to me of emmett till, the child who was murdered, and his mother, at the time of his funeral, said, show his body, so they will never forget what happened to this innocent child, a victim of a hate crime. That was something i always grew up with. Now you have young kids under the age of 30 who have constantly seen these images, but recently, they saw the beginning, the middle, and the end of a confrontation involving a black man, george floyd, and they watched his life end on tape. What does that do to a child . What does that create in ones heart . And what does that create as it relates to the change that they want . Well, it created a revolution. This is a long, hard road to change, and we know that. Thereve been so many inspiring videos that im sure youve shared. Ive seen them. Ive shared them with my friends and family. But lets be real thereve been some gut punches too. In fact, i saw a video just this morning of two white men mocking the death of george floyd, one pretending to have his knee on the neck of the other. That is an example of why the road to change continues to be long, and it is painful. You know that. So i wanted to hear from these young protesters that weve been seeing in the streets. Perhaps they will be the barricade, they will be the new road, to change. So were gonna dig into their hearts and hear from them. Take a look. At the end of the day, lets talk facts. Guys on the ground, hes laying on his stomach, he have handcuffs on. Its four of yall, one of him. Four of yall, one of him. Who has control of the situation . Its a marathon, not a sprint and this is an institution. [dramatic music] that our country was founded on. We are here to care about black lives, not to ruin them. For too long, weve been waiting for this time, and now that we have our white allies, and now that we have their attention i stand here today exhausted. Black minnesota, were done dying. And white minnesota, you are done hiding. This has been a White Wakanda for far too long where black bodies drop like flies. Joining me now from around the country, Leslie Redmond from minneapolis, ryan staples from ofallon, missouri, Jaquay Williams from north carolina, Arianna Evans from maryland, and hana smith from virginia. Thank you all for joining me. Leslie, let me start with you. You heard me. I compared this trauma to what kids experienced watching 9 11. You are at ground zero of this latest crisis of Police Brutality, so i think about all of the videos, all of the moments captured on tape that you have been exposed to all of these years, and some without consequences, of black people being killed on camera. Did you ever imagine that Something Like this would happen where you are . I am, unfortunately, not surprised. I think for black people in america, White Supremacy has always been the root issue for us and so i think that if you were asleep or if you had become elite, then maybe you had become comfortable enough to think that this was not our reality, but people who are still on the ground and who still, very much so, are impacted by the melanin that they have, i dont think they were surprised at all. This has been a long time coming. My hope is that our brother george floyd will be the last and that we can actually see some systemic reform and change because as i said in the video before, we are done dying. Ryan, you were just 12 years old when Michael Brown was killed, the video released of him being shot, and that left a lot of room for some people to say, as they did, listen, when i was a younger woman with the rodney king, what happened before . What you know, all of these missing pieces that jurors and some within the public say they needed, but with george floyd, what did you see in that video that made you know that this was the change . What i saw is hatred. What i saw is generations of white people oppressing black people, and through his eyes, you could see pure hatred. Ouwhpened before
