Were going to start here with the surging coronavirus pandemic. America has just shattered the daily record again with more than 193,000 new cases reported in just 24 hours. Several state and local officials announcing new lockdowns, pauses, freezes and other restrictions in an effort to stop the spread in communities across the country and Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak says hes tested positive for the virus but is feeling okay. Both pfizer and moderna have reported that they should have enough data to seek fda emergency use authorization for their vaccines by the end of the month and President Trump says a vaccine will be available to the general public as soon as april. Abcs trevor ault is at New Yorkpresbyterian Hospital with the latest. Good morning to you, trevor. Reporter well, eva, good morning. To be frank the numbers were seeing are incredibly alarming. Just yesterday 16 states hit new record highs for hospitalizations, deaths are on the rise in 30 states, the spread of this virus is aggressively accelerating as we head toward the holidays. This morning, america engulfed by an onslaught of coronavirus cases. 193,000 logged friday, the u. S. On track for a million new infections this week alone. As i say to my patients, often when im worried ill tell you so you can worry with me and were there. Reporter states now turning to drastic measures not seen since the spring. New mexicos governor issuing a twoweek stayathome order as one county there ships in three mobile morgues. We are in a lifeordeath situation, and if we dont act right now, we will absolutely crush our current healthcare system. Reporter oregon rolling out its own twoweek freeze. Chicagos will kick in monday and the governor of north dakota with an aboutface issuing a statewide mask mandate as their state passed 700 deaths. Our situation has changed and we must change with it. Reporter as the cdc predicts 282,000 american deaths by december 5th. The compassion that you should feel when you see that number should go beyond just a statistic. It should be thats a human being. Reporter this mississippi family lost their mother, elaine mccray, who volunteered to be a covid nurse. And dont take this virus for granted because it is very real. Reporter and san antonio couple adan and Mariah Gonzalez both among those claimed by the virus leaving their 4yearold son behind. I sometimes dont even know what to tell him. What people dont realize, how real it is until it actually hits home. Reporter now hospitals across america rapidly filling up with patients hoping to avoid that same grim fate. But doctors like Anthony Hericks in south dakota say theyre running out of room. Weve also had to at times double up patients in single bedrooms in order to make room for extra people as well. Reporter in massachusetts, the dcu center is converting into a 240bed Field Hospital again. And this weekend, new York Governor Andrew Cuomo holding an emergency summit for Northeastern State leaders as friday new york eclipsed 5,000 new cases for the First Time Since april, but the nurses at New Yorkpresbyterian Hospital in manhattan are on the road, stepping in to help with the crush of patients in utah. Nurses like Natalie Torrance returning the favor for the help they received when this pandemic first took hold. When we walked into the Emergency Room Department one morning they had written, im thankful for the new york nurses here helping, and it was a really heartwarming moment to know that our help was also appreciated and that the nurses here were really thankful to have us here. Reporter and as Governor Andrew Cuomo plans his emergency summit with northeastern leaders this weekend at least one governor, connecticuts ned lamont is in quarantine after his chief spokesperson just tested positive. Whit. Seeing a lot more of that across the country. Trevor, thank you so much. Joining us now is dr. Tom frieden, former director of the cdc. Doctor, thank you so much for joining us this morning. We do appreciate it. I want to jump right to it here. You just saw a report that coronavirus emergency hitting new record highs. Weve seen a jump in cases blamed on halloween parties. Thanksgiving less than two weeks away. How should we be planning and preparing for that . Were seeing more cases in more places than ever before. Unfortunately, the numbers are going up, and theyre going to continue to go up and get worse. Weve hit more than 60,000 people hospitalized for this virus today. And within a month that number will likely pass 100,000. Were also going to see probably 2,000 deaths per day by the end of the year. Unfortunately, this means we have to change your thanksgiving plans. Travel to places with more or less covid than what youve got in your Community Results in spread of covid. Either you may bring it there or you may get it there. Time spent with others indoors for a long period of time without masks, eating, drinking, its a formula for the spread of covid. Thanksgiving is one of our greatest holidays. Its beloved, but this year were going to have to do it differently or were going to have a very unmerry christmas. No question about that. Yesterday on this program, i spoke with one of the cochairs of joe bidens new covid advisory board, dr. Vivek murthy. He said right now the biden team is not looking at a nationwide shutdown but instead a targeted strategy where you could increase restrictions in specific hot spots. Do you agree with that approach . Absolutely. Thats the right approach. You want to be nuanced and well timed with restrictions. Nuanced meaning there are some things that you really want to try to keep open. Absolutely health care, we need people to continue to get the care that they need to the greatest extent possible. K through 6 schooling and all kids in person in school really important to try to preserve that. Id like to see shopping preserved. Retail. If people will wear mask, not go out if theyre sick, distance, not have crowding. Increased ventilation, all would be necessary to keep that open but for many parts of the country, restaurants and bars are going to have to close for Indoor Dining. This is the reality if we want to protect our parents and let our kids go to school. Sadly weve seen more schools go remote because of the rapid spread. But i want to ask you about this, we saw that press conference at the white house suggesting that a couple of vaccines could be approved by the end of the year. Pfizer says its vaccine could be as much as 90 effective. Give us a reality check here. How optimistic are about these vaccines and when could people actually get it . Its very encouraging to have this kind of progress with vaccines, but theres still a lot we dont know. We dont know how long protection lasts. We havent seen the data from pfizer. We dont know if it will protect older people. Were not certain about safety yet, so rolling a Vaccination Campaign out is going to be something that takes many months and isnt going to be simple. Twodose series, different vaccines, need to train providers, engage communities, explain to patients, track for adverse events. Its a really big job so its great progress, i agree with that and thats well done, but its only the start of a long road toward protecting people with the vaccine and unfortunately, it will not be here in time to protect most of the country in the next few months. That means weve got the future in our hands. We need to do more by masking up, avoiding crowded indoor places, if we want our kids to stay in school were going to have to skip the afterschool pizza party. If we are going to be able to have a christmas not seeing horrible headlines, were going to have to cut down on the thanksgiving contacts. Thats going to be up to all of us to put in the work. Dr. Frieden, thank you so much. We do appreciate it. Thank you. Dan, over to you. A long road ahead, he said. Lets move to politics now and were expecting to see protests in washington, d. C. , today from Trump Supporters questioning the outcome of the election. Meanwhile, president elect biden is now projected to win the state of georgia, the first time a democrat has done that in nearly 30 years, a hand count audit is under way right now across georgia. As for President Trump, he is now projected to win North Carolina with projections in now for all 50 states and d. C. The Electoral College now stands at 306 for biden and 232 for President Trump. Thats the same margin by which trump won four years ago. Abcs rachel scott is in wilmington, delaware, where the president elect is working on putting together his new administration. Rachel, good morning to you. Reporter dan, good morning. Even as joe biden cements his president ial victory, President Trump has refused to concede an election that he has lost putting a smooth transition of power on hold. With just 67 days left in office, President Trump for the first time seemed to signal that his presidency will be coming to an end. I will not go this administration will not be going to a lockdown. Hopefully the whatever happens in the future, who knows which administration it will be. I guess time will tell, but i can tell you this administration will not go to a lockdown. Reporter the president stepping into the rose garden with a promise that a Coronavirus Vaccine will soon be on the way, but warned that new yorkers may have to wait. Going after the states Governor Andrew Cuomo. With the exception of places like new york state, he wants to take his time with the vaccine. He doesnt trust where the vaccines coming from. Reporter cuomo pushing back calling trump irrelevant. What the president says is just untrue. There will be no delay. But we do have a Scientific Panel that will review the protocol that the fda went through. Reporter by the time the vaccine is available, President Trump will have no say in who gets it. Joe biden will be the president of the united states. But as trump seeks to delay the transition, the president elect is still in the dark unable to coordinate with the White House Coronavirus task force and multiple other agencies. Access to ongoing work on distribution plans, Vaccine Development that engagement directly with the agencies would significantly help our preparations to govern. Reporter biden moving forward with his own Coronavirus Task force reaching 306 projected electoral votes overnight. But only four Senate Republicans have acknowledged him as the president elect and trumps team is still not accepting the results. It would look pretty bad if he did not attend the inauguration. It would look like sour grapes, wouldnt it . Well, i think the president will attend his own inauguration. He would have to be there, in fact. Repporter trumps personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani taking over the slew of election lawsuits, but judges in michigan and pennsylvania dismissed trumps case on voter fraud for lack of credible evidence. And while most republicans will not acknowledge joe biden as the president elect there are a growing number in the Republican Party who say he does need to get those intelligence briefings. President trumps former chief of staff john kelly saying the president does not have to concede for the transition process to start saying that any delay only hurts our national security, dan. Rachel, we know biden is working through the weekend with his Transition Team and hes made covid his priority. Hes been very clear about that. Meanwhile, the white house is dealing with its own outbreak now . Reporter yeah, this is the third outbreak in the last several months. This one coming after that Election Night watch party that President Trump hosted at the white house. At least 15 people in the white house orbit have now tested positive for the virus and this morning, sources tell us that a growing number of secret service agents, dozens of them, are now in selfisolation or selfquarantine. Eva. Rachel scott for us, thank you. Turning to the state of the economy, more than 21 million americans are claiming some form of unemployment insurance. The number of unemployed americans who are out of work six months or more increased by almost 40 last month. Now, those relying on federal assistance to get by face an uncertain future. Abcs Deirdre Bolton has the latest on what you need to know. Good morning to you, deirdre. Reporter good morning, eva. As millions of americans struggle to make ends meet, there are two federal emergency programs. Both part of the c. A. R. E. S. Act that are set to expire next month. This morning, the clock is ticking as federal relief for millions of americans is running out. Ive never been one to count on the government for help. But ive also never been one in a pandemic and had a country shut down either. Reporter Randy Williams lost his job as a manager of a casual restaurant this spring. After his state Unemployment Benefits ran out, the pandemic emergency Unemployment Compensation plan allowed him to pay his bills for an extended 13 weeks. This program is one of two that ends just weeks from now. One of the problems here is that, i mean the normal social safety net in this country has a big hole in it and usually the backup employment options are just not there so some of the longterm unemployed have very little option right now. Reporter the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance Program is another part of the c. A. R. E. S. Act which also expires at the end of december. It provides aid to workers who are usually left out of the system including gig workers and the selfemployed. Single mother victoria passmore was laid off from a Health Information Technology Company in june. I have to continue relying on my support system and savings and hopefully i can get a good job beforehand. Reporter democrats and republicans say they know how important these programs are but they have yet to reach an agreement. So far, both sides seem to be at an impasse. Our focus in the congress now in this lame duck continues to be on covid relief. I dont think the Current Situation demands multitrilliondollar package. Reporter but covid19 cases are growing and so are lines at food banks throughout the country. In seattle, Food Insecurity is ramping up. Americans struggling to get by. I think about that how our people are making ends meet. Reporter if you are struggling, contact your utilities companies, most have grace programs, they will work with you. Same to be said for banks for any kind of bank debt, mortgages, for example, you do have to call but the banks know they have to be flexible. They will work with you. Whit. Would it be safe to say that a core part of your message here is we as a culture need to get more comfortable with discomfort because we need to have these conversations if were going to move past this . It is uncomfortable at first. But when you do it long enough it becomes comfortable. What kind of conversations do you think we should be having after the election through which we all lived . Lets get back to unity. There is a core and central humanity that we need to get back to. Do you feel any different as a black man in america after this election . I just feel a sense of peace, at least the chaos, the public chaos, the visceral chaos has died down. There is quite a bit of debate around this question of white privilege, in particular, i know youve heard from folks who are white and dont feel privileged at all because they may have grown up economically disadvantaged. White privilege is not saying your life hasnt been hard but and your skin color hasnt contributed to the difficulty of your life. You can be white and still have a difficult life. So many people would counter that, well, i didnt grow up with money. My parents had to work hard. I am not privileged. Right. What would you say to that .
