You know, a Million People getting displaced in palestine, palestine, more than 100 students taking to the streets outside galileo high school. How does it feel to be walking with so many of your fellow students today . It feels powerful. It feels like my voice is actually heard in a lot of times. It hasnt been free, free, free palestine and on the stairs of San Francisco city hall, more calls for peace. As the daughter of an israeli, as a jewish woman, as a human being, i say stop the madness. Stop the killing. We call for an immediate cease fire. We call for the opening of a humanitarian corridor to allow aid, medical equipment to enter gaza. Leaders of the world must and lastingr to negotiate a solutions. People from right here in the bay area have seen the tragedy and destruction in israel. Firsthand attempts for them to get home have been met with multiple roadblocks. After a frightening ten days, tessa morgan is finally back home in the bay area with her family. How are you feeling . Exhausted. Im very, like, surreal. I wasnt supposed to be here right now. I was supposed to be, like, going to work in tel aviv. Morgan, who is from sonoma, traveled to tel aviv ten months ago with a jewish youth group. She ended up staying to work in an art gallery. We first spoke with her saturday while she was still in israel. Sirens and blasts interrupted that first interview. You just part of the heartbreaking reality, morgan says. Many there are experiencing people i know who in the beginning of the conflict were posting those like missing persons fliers. I just watched them like kind of one by one turn into funeral announcements. Its wednesday. We met her the moment she got into sfo, but getting here wasnt easy. Tessa said flights were being canceled left and right and the few that were still flying were almost impossible to book. Everyone was scrambling to get on those planes. They were completely full. A couple tickets would pop up. You had to refresh the page like every ten minutes to see if Something Else would pop up. She eventually got a flight out of israel to portugal, where she continued on to sfo. Morgan wasnt the only one facing those challenges. In Sonoma County alone, ten people were trying to leave israel to return back to the bay area. Thats according to north bay congressman mike thompson, whose office was working to bring people back wednesday. He said most have been able to return. I talked to my District Office staff this afternoon and everyone who has been working one of these cases reports to me that there are people theyve been working with are either home or on their way home. But morgan and her family said they are not taking her safe return for granted. Our hearts are so heavy for the people of israel and really just hoping that everybody else has the same experience we do and getting their loved ones home safely because we know theres still a lot of a lot of people trying to get home to the us from sfo. Abc7 news viewers told us they felt the shaking there and stockton, modesto, other parts of the east bay and we visited isleton today shortly after the quake. There are no reports of damage or injuries. But a clerk at a local store tells us this was her first time experiencing an earthquake and it made for a few scary moments. All of a sudden i see everything shaking, like going back and forth like that. And i hear something falling behind me. There was three bottles of the smirnoff that luckily they were plastic. They were not bottles, but living it live. It was it was a very scary. Yeah for the earthquake also triggered widespread inspections of levees and other infrastructure in the area, but there was no damage to the delta supplies water to an estimated 27 Million People across the state. New developments now. The San Francisco Unified School District announced its reached a tentative agreement with its Service Workers union. It would give a 16 pay increase through 2024, plus a one time payment of 1,300. The union represents. The asiapacific Economic Cooperation summit is a very big deal. Dozens of best shelters across the city have spelled it out. Apec is going to be epic. This is an unprecedented event for the city of San Francisco. Expect a lot of security all over San Francisco. So what i can tell you is there will be an extraordinary amount of law enforcement, military and Public Safety personnel in San Francisco for this event so well above what anybody has ever seen here before. Along the outer perimeter, San Francisco police will be supported by about 1000 and officers. I cant think the california Highway Patrol enough. I cant think the us secret service, all of our partners up here in the inner high security zone at Moscone Center in yerba buena gardens, the secret service will secure the area with a 14 foot unscaled fence. The higher security zone will be limited to people with credentials. The secret service is also talking to local transit leaders over the temporary closure of the central subway that runs underneath the security zone. For security reasons, the yerba buena station and fourth and brandon stations of the central subway will need to be closed for the duration of the event. Were grateful, however, that were able to reroute trains. Bus routes will be rerouted to the outer edge of the zone. The powell street bart station will likely remain open throughout the summit. The map has been provided with maps of closures and impacted roads are now posted online. City leaders say theyre working to keep everyone informed and are asking people to be patient. New at six oakland mayor sheng tao is launching a new effort to disrupt Human Trafficking. Mayor tao launched a Human Trafficking Advisory Council today. Its made up of Police Survivor advocacy groups and Community Based organizations. Theyll gather regularly to map out the best strategies for prevention, intervention and enforcement. It is going to be community led. It is going to be survivor led because we know how important it is that we get this right. Hell bring is a lot of what this process is about and what we will be helping as we move forward. We will be investing resources into the healing process. Those resources include counseling, job training and placement and transitional housing. The council is a new part of the mayors safety plan for oakland. The state department of justice is teaming up with a federal task force to stop fentanyl trafficking at the california mexico border. Attorney general rob bonta made the announcement today in san diego. The county has seen a 700 increase in fentanyl Overdose Deaths since 2016. Thats according to the doj. While there, bonta led a closed door roundtable with federal state and local leaders. We cannot afford to be passive observers in the face of this crisis. San jose approved a plan to lease some land at villa del oro and santa ignacio avenue for a quick build shelter. Itll provide 150 beds once its being completed and is the brainchild of a philanthropist. Abc7 news south bay reporter Justin Dorsey explains why the city views this as a big win. What can a dollar get you . Can a soda candy bar . How about a plot of land . The San Jose City Council Unanimously approved a five year land lease to build a 150 bed emergency. Interim housing site. John sobrato and the Sobrato Organization is leasing the land to the city for 1 a year. What this would do is open up prime land to be part of the solution to homelessness. Thats not something weve done all of our sites today are on publicly owned land. City owned land. Vta land. Caltrans land. This is a potential game changer. The units will feature many of the amenities as other tiny home projects, but they will be solar powered with limited hookups to allow them to be moved off site when the lease is up. Mayor mehan says the average stay for residents in similar units is 6 to 9 months, with more than 50 moving to permanent housing. So he says 1500 people could be housed here over five years, creating a pipeline out of homelessness to combat the pipeline into homelessness that is far too common in our community today. While the city views this plot of land as an absolute win, the surrounding community is not as happy. We have lost trust and disappointed in our community, represented in mayor issa ajlouny says. Neighbors voiced their disapproval to this plan to their Council Member arjun batra, saying south san jose already has more tiny homes than other parts of the city Council Member barger agreed no more tiny homes in this area and would include this in his memo. The community was also surprised when his memo omitted this because the mayor would not agree. Council member barker then told the community he would ask for no encampment zone when the city council would vote. He failed the community again when he did not mention this in his motion, the approved plan would prioritize unhoused residents currently close to the new site when deciding who gets to live on the property. Council member batra says the council will explore designated no encampments zones near tiny homes in the future. But for now our goal would be to get this new site built and have those encampments which are there nearby, those people move into these things and clear out the encampment and hopefully never have another encampment appear in that area. Shes the teenager who vanished nearly 20 years ago in aruba. Today, the man long suspected of killing her pleaded guilty to extortion and in the process also confessed to the murder. Joran van der sloots plea was part of a deal with federal prosecutors. Natalees mother was emotional following todays proceedings. Joran van der sloot is no longer the suspect in my daughters murder. He is the killer. Its been 18 years since natalee disappeared and natalee would be 36 years old today. They i still miss her every day. Its been a very long and painful journey. He apologized in court today and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Van der slot is already serving time for a murder in peru.
