Cals graduation is set for this weekend. Abc seven News Reporter Leslie Brinkley took a look at expectations on campus. The happy weekend the big uc berkeley Commencement Ceremony will take place saturday at 10 30 a. M. At california memorial stadium, where thousands of undergraduates will get their diplomas. They are limited to four tickets each for guests, and the usual protocol is in place as it is for football games. No backpacks, no banners or signs allowed, and a clear bag policy. There are also 90 other graduation related ceremonies and events taking place around campus over the next few days. Today, sather gate is wide open, but the tent encampment on the steps of sproul hall is still growing larger, with barricades set up to block access in places. Campus police can be seen keeping an eye on the plaza while private security guards are visible as well. Any plans for protests or events going into the graduation weekend . That all depends on the university, so were playing it day by day. Berkeley has long experience with commencement outs that were interrupted at times by protests dating back to the 1960s. The University Says everything is going forward. As usual, were going to be prioritizing using the ability of graduating students their friends and their families to participate in and to enjoy one of the most meaningful days in their lives. Hotels near the campus say parents are already checking in for graduation events, and thus far, no one is inquired about security. Graduating seniors say theyre not worried. Theyre excited. As far as the protest goes, i think its a good thing for them to, you know, be preaching what they want to believe in and as far as im concerned, ive never had a problem with safety at uc berkeley. Im Leslie Brinkley, abc seven news. Pomona colleges commencement is this week, and theyre preparing for the possibility of protesters interrupting ceremonies. A camp went up monday morning right in front of the main stage. The Southern California college was one of the first to have an encampment, and some students were arrested after entering an Administration Building and occupying the president s office there. How long are you going to stay here . Until Pomona College divests. So even if that means commencement this sunday, youll be here. Yeah. We will not rest. I can understand where theyre coming from, but again, you know, this class didnt have a 2020 graduation. And, you know, now they might not even have a 2024 graduation. Commencement events start on friday and conclude sunday morning. The school says it has offered to meet with the protesters. Theres now an investigation into the violence between protesters and counterprotesters that erupted a week ago on the campus of ucla. It will use some of that technology that i helped identify the january 6th rioters at the us capitol. Reporter josh haskell, from our sister station in los angeles, explains. Ucla announcing tuesday theyre launching an investigation into the violence that occurred one week ago on the night of april 30th, when counterprotesters arrived at the gaza solidarity encampment and started attacking those living in royce quad. The investigation is being led by the newly created position of chief safety officer, filled by rick braziel. A detective from the lapd will help as well. In a statement, ucla chancellor gene block said in part avc, braziel and i have directed ucpd to invest whatever resources are needed to conduct a rapid and thorough investigation into the violent attack. Ucpd is currently reviewing all available footage from last tuesday night and speaking to witnesses who were present. We urge anyone who saw the violence firsthand or who has information about the attack to report it as soon as possible. Theyll look at cell sites who hit what, when, who was with who. Uh facial Recognition Software certainly will be employed. Uh uh vehicle license plate readers. Meanwhile, on uclas campus, theres more security than students as learning is taking place remotely this week after inperson classes resumed monday. But protesters quickly came back to campus. The encampment was cleared five days ago, but cleaning crews are still working to remove graffiti off the exterior of royce hall. Its almost like an eerie feeling. So like today, i was only here because i had to take a test and like seeing nobody here on like a tuesday afternoon. Its like a weird feeling, like, especially like this area is always packed with people. Its tough to. Its kind of weird, like tension. I was excited to go back, but i also kind of enjoy, you know, respecting things and like letting things take their place. We have an update to share about a story we brought you last week of a San Francisco man who says he received not one, but two racist, hateful deliveries on his doorstep in recent weeks. Neighbors tell me they are leading a rally saturday morning in alamo square to show support for terry williams. Back in april, terry says he found a doll with a noose around its neck at his door, along with a piece of paper. So covered with slurs we couldnt show them on tv. This weekend. Terry told us another racist package with threatening language landed on his doorstep. San Francisco Police say they are investigating both incidents. Sky seven was over a fire that damaged at least two buildings this afternoon in oakland. This is at the intersection of east eighth street and sixth avenue. You can see the flames that are shooting out of that Apartment Building on the corner. They also spread to the home next door. Now, as bad as the fire looks, the Oakland Fire Department says no one was hurt. However, 12 people inside the home were displaced. Its not clear if anyone was living inside the Apartment Building. It was covered in graffiti and had boarded up windows. The cause of the fire is, of course, under investigation. Suspect has been booked for multiple charges, including vehicular manslaughter and felony hit and run, after a dramatic and deadly crash in san jose this morning happened right in front of andrew hi hig school at the intersection of center road and east capitol expressway. Abc seven news south bay reporter Dustin Dorsey has new details on the investigation. On a deadly intersection in san jose. Claimed another life tuesday morning. Multi vehicle accident with three patients one patients unconscious, not breathing just before 730. San jose police say this red truck was speeding westbound on capitol expressway. The driver then ran a red light at the intersection of center road, just outside andrew hill high school. The red vehicle collided with the bicyclist and then collided with another white truck that was traveling northbound on capital expressway. They had the green uh the bicyclist. Unfortunately sustained a major injuries and was pronounced deceased there at the scene. Sapd says the bicyclist was an adult and he is sadly the 17th traffic related death in san jose of 2024. The driver of the white truck was also injured and the driver believed to have caused the crash is in jail after police say he attempted to leave the scene, a Good Samaritan stopped and held him until police arrived. He was booked into santa clara countys main jail on multiple charges. Debris was spread out in a several block radius, as investigators worked to put the pieces together of what happened during this deadly collision. Although the crash came just before classes started at andrew hill, a district spokesperson told us students were not involved in the accident. However, the school still felt the impacts, with investigations shutting down surrounding streets that is in all directions on capitol and center road, and its because the accident is pretty large considering the amount of vehicles that were hit related to this actual accident, and theyre going to be closed for a significant amount of time. It was at least five hours before traffic began moving again on both sides of the busy intersection, center road and capitol expressway are identified as dangerous corridors in san jose due to the amount of lanes in the high speeds drivers use in todays deadly crash serves as a reminder in san jose. Dustin dawsey, abc seven news. A man suspected of hitting two pedestrians today in San Francisco is now in custody. According to police, the man hit the first person at about 755 this morning in the tenderloin. That victim wasnt seriously hurt. Officers spotted the suspect driving recklessly a short time later and started chasing him. Thats when police say he hit a 14 Year Old Girl walking near francisco middle school. The student was crossing from one side of the street to the other, making their way to class, and thats when they were struck by by the vehicle. And were trying to figure out how, but it may have been just it may have been the side view mirror of the vehicle. The girl suffered a broken shoulder and cuts on her head, but those injuries are nonlife threatening. Police say they arrested the driver along the embarcadero opposite the exploratorium shortly after ending the pursuit. Coming up next, the budget concerns at San Francisco Unified School District. Diving deeper into this critical issue for the bay areas Largest School district, lets get straight to abc seven News Reporter ryan curry, who is live for us in San Francisco, with the latest on the discussion happening as we speak. Ryan yeah. Dion. Ama. Good evening. Beginning at 630, thats when the open session will begin. Where they will plan to be discussing the budget. Right now, the state essentially has control over their finances. A difficult situation thats drawing mixed reaction from parents and students. In San Francisco, School Board Members are preparing for their first meeting since the California Department of education announced s. F. Usd will soon run out of money. Two fiscal experts, whom the state appointed a few years ago, are now authorized to suspend or reverse Financial Decisions made by the superintendent or the board. We send our kids off to school every morning, anticipating, you know, theyre going to be supported, to learn, to thrive, to have everything they need. Meredith dodson is in charge of the districts parent coalition. She fears the states control means parents or others in the city wont have as much of a say in the districts moves. Will the district not take parent and teacher feedback as seriously . Because they cant, because the because the state is making all the decisions now. So i think that is a real fear. Its a real valid fear. At tuesday nights meeting, superintendent matt wayne is expected to outline what the state advisors want the district to do. S. F. Usd has been struggling financially for years and faces declining enrollment and potential School Closures amid talks of a strike among school staff. In a statement, s. F. Usd said the San Francisco Unified School District has been taking and continues to take serious corrective actions on its budget to address ongoing fiscal challenges. On friday, s. F. Usd received notice from the cdc that because sf usd is still in the process of implementing its plan to resolve deficit spending, the cdc is revising the certification of sf usds march budget report from qualified to negative. And we believe that the cdc has gone too far in trying to intervene. While we know the cuts are being made, cassandra curiel, the president of the teachers union, says she and the district have made a lot of progress to find room in the budget. Over 30 million of expenditures could be saved in areas that are actually pretty far away from students, and its ideal that they do that. The cdc should have seen by this point that the district is making these efforts to do that. One of the restrictions already in place is a hiring freeze. The district has struggled to bring on new teachers the last few years, and curiel says halting the process is detrimental to students. There should be no classroom where a student starts the school year with no teacher. Thats inappropriate. Now, we did reach out to state superintendent tony thurmans office. The union wants him to intervene. We didnt hear back from his office. The union hopes that they want to continue working with the district, to continue to resolve any sort of budget issues before the state has any sort of intervention. Were live here in San Francisco. Ryan curry, abc seven news. All right, ryan, thank you. Now, as you can imagine, these money problems did not happen overnight. No years of buildup. And now its coming to a head for sf, usd. So joining us to give us more context on the problem facing San Francisco unified are lyanne melendez, who has decades of experience covering education and sf usd. Yeah, i think we should start about how did we get here in the first place . Yeah, well, theres so many factors. First of all, you had declining enrollment for years and the School District really didnt address it like they should have. Right. It was business as usual without downsizing or reducing personnel, for example, which is what they should have done now. Also, this is a district which has always had extra money. But again, instead of saving for that extra for, you know, curriculum or extra programs, they they decided to spend too much money. And so thats not fiscally responsible is what im hearing by a lot of people. Now, you also had the fiasco of the payroll, which everybody will tell you, that you that the district needed a new payroll system and they purchased one. But it was really never put to the test by other large School Districts. And of course, as we all know, it failed and it cost them millions and millions of dollars. So is there a plan moving forward thats going to help . So what im hearing is that we should expect layoffs, hiring freezes. There will be schools that perhaps will be closed or consolidated. Its not going to be pretty. Now, again, this is a superintendent that he was a leader of a School District in hayward, a not a big School District. People say to me that what he needs now is a group of people that he can trust. People with knowledge, experience and people with great enthusiasm. Tonight for Solano County, runs until 8 a. M. Thursday for the other areas, it is 1 to 11 a. M. Tomorrow. Wind gusts will be up to 45 miles an hour. Its a northerly wind sustained 20 to 30, and that wind tends to dry out the atmosphere. The only good news is over the weekend we did have rain, so the fuel moistures are running higher in terms of fire danger. Its not going to be as high as it would be if we didnt have the rain. Reporter the jury in Donald Trumps historic criminal trial laser focused on Stormy Daniels on the witness stand, listening closely and furiously taking notes during her testimony in the case. The defense calling for a mistrial over her testimony, but the judge denying that motion during crossexamination, the defense tried to play up daniels animosity for trump, the back and forth growing hostile, the judge stepping in numerous times. Defense attorneys also questioning daniels credibility, asking, youre making this up as you sit here right . Insisting daniels is driven by money and is making up stories to reap profits. Daniels testifying that she hated trump and wanted him to be held accountable. Her testimony resumes on thursday. Trumps defense says he was trying to protect his family, not his president ial campaign. But daniels told the jury he never expressed any worry about his wife finding out. Reena roy, abc news, New York Justice delayed in Donald Trumps classified documents case a federal judge today indefinitely postponed the trial in florida, citing significant issues around classified evidence that would need to be worked out before the criminal case goes to a jury. Trump is accused of keeping classified documents that he took with him after he left the white house in 2021. Now to an update from the abc seven news iteam. The los angeles innocence project, which is representing scott peterson, filed a motion in court today requesting new dna testing on some evidence in the case. Peterson was convicted in 2004 of killing his wife, laci, and their unborn child. Earlier this year, the los angeles innocence project. Motion filed today argues that new dna testing for some evidence is needed and is something that could have changed the outcome of the trial. This comes just two weeks before a final hearing on the matter. When the judge could rule on this, tiktok and its Chinese Parent Company bytedance, are fighting back against the us government. Tiktok could be banned in the u. S. If bytedance doesnt sell the popular social media platform in the next 9 to 12 months, President Biden signed that order last month. In the lawsuit. Tiktok and bytedance say the order is illegal because it infringes on its users First Amendment rights. The white house did not immediately comment on the lawsuit. Crews had to herd the sea lions away as they fixed those docks. The repairs are now done, but the harbor master says some of the sea lions may be a little cautious about coming back.
