Row shimma and nagasaki. We are live this morning in seoul. Good morning. Reporter good morning. This is a huge escalation of the nfrontation here. It was a Massive Underground detonation. The North Koreans now claim that they have a very powerful Nuclear Weapon that can be put on a long range missile. Its a direct threat and warning to the United States. Pictures from north korea set to show its Supreme Leader inspecting a long range mifl ready to arm with a nuclear warhead. But hours later a massive seismic event, 6. 3 on the richter scale. Global analysis estimating an explosion many times for powerful than the bombs that leveled naga sake. A claim not independently confirmed and widely doutd when the north made the same claim in the past. A bold act of defiance despite repeated warnings. They will be met with fire, furry and frankly power. Reporter north korea threatening to fire missiles at guam. Last week firing a missile some 1700s miles over northern japan. The u. S. Responding with a huge unprecedented show of force along with south korea and japan. Some of americas most sophisticated war planes flying over the peninsula, a mock bombing raid. Yet today the north korean shrugging all that aside conducting what appears to be their sixth nuclear test and by some estimates the most powerful ever. Here in south korea the president who has been pushing for diplomacy and reconciliation with the north says that he will not let this latest provocation go unpunished. We understand u. S. Officials have been in church with their counterparts in this part of the world and we understand theres a plan for the president of south korea to have a tell conversation with President Trump at some point during the day. Thank you. Nbc garrett hague, the president is obviously not happy about this latest nuclear test. Hes up early tweeting about it. Reporter the president s First Response is came this morning with a series of tweets beginning around 7 30 this morning. The first tweet reads in part, north korea has conducted a Major Nuclear test. Their words and actions continue to be very hostile and dangerous to the United States. He continues north korea is a rogue nation, a great threat and an embarrassment to china. Some news in both of those tweets. Confirmation from the highest levels of the u. S. Government that this was, in fact, a nuclear test by the North Koreans. Thats important given how north korea somehow misrepresents their achievement. The president describes their actions as hostile to the United States and not just to our friends and allies in the world. This is a great threat and embarrassment to china. All along the president has tried to tie the Chinese Government to north korea and somehow use china to help contain north korea. He hasnt been successful thus far but again clearly hoping to pressure china to do more on this issue. In a third tweet that just came out the president also talks about south koreas strategy and critiques it. South koreas strategy of apiecement. Tough words for an ally he will need to work with going forward. Lets head back now overseas to china. North koreas closest partner in the region. Whats the latest there . Reporter another International Crisis in which the chinese and the russians are key players. The chinese president , president xi giving a keynote speech here in which he did not once mention the north Korea Nuclear test but at the same time the Chinese Government releasing a statement in which it has condependent those tests. Meanwhile the russian president flying in to this city meeting with president xi and other World Leaders while the russia say they are deeply concerned by the test and calling on all sides to keep calm. What the chinese desperately want here with pressure on the chinese could help resolve the situation, what they desperately want is stability in the region. That is exactly what they are not getting. Halley . Thank you. Jeremy bash is a former chief of staff in the obama administration. Good morning. Good morning. Put this into context. What is the significance of what just happened in north korea . Who claims by the north korea this morning, one they detonated a hydrogen bomb. This will be their sixth undernuclear test but perhaps even more significant is the claim by the north Korean Leader they are able to put it on top of a intercontinental ballistic missile. That means a Nuclear Weapon could reach the mainland of the United States and hit american cities. What is the goal for him . What is the end game . They have always wanted to build up their Nuclear Arsenal and trade away for food and to feed their own people. Now they just want it for regime survival. They want it for the ultimate card to play against those people in south korea, japan and even the United States who would call for regime change. What are the real options for him here . What does the white house do next . Very few and bad limited options for the president here because weve tried sanctions and diplomatic pressure. Hes trying to motivate china with his tweets and south korea by saying diplomacy has not work. I think the white house is going to have to consider limited military options this week. Thats what i suspect. Meetings in the white house will revolve around here. You think well know by the end of this week . Who knows. I think there will be a lot of consultations with allies. Youll see strong statements coming out of the state department, Defense Department and the white house about military options on the peninsula. Jeremy bash, thank you for being up with us this morning. While the president is facing down this International Crisis hes dealing with another huge challenge here at home. The long and painful recovery after Hurricane Harvey. President trump and the first lady visited texas and louisiana this weekend, offering comfort to the victims. National correspondent miguel in bridge city, texas. Good morning. Reporter the official death toll here stands at 43 after harvey. The damage is in the billions. For so many its measured one home at a time. Halley. Thank you. Chuck todd is nbcs political director and moderator of meet tmeet the press good morning. Good morning. We got the administration dealing with all of this, not just harvey and congress coming back and debt ceiling, tax reform and now this threat from north korea escalating again. Every administration has a lot to deal with. Is this one spread too thin . I hope not and the administration certainly is not supposed to be designed to be spread too thin. Politically, i think the question is, is the president is this president capable of being spread too thin because i think all president s have that, the administration can handle this but can the president s focus do that. This is going to be a month that would be tough for any president but he put himself in a deep hole politically. Hes got the lowest Approval Ratings any of any first term president in the modern era and he enters the month he spent the month of august picking fights with republicans in congress. His response to charlottesville is still, i think, having causing more problems for him politically, so all of that on top of what you just started the question with, so yeah to say the least, september is going to be a pretty crucial and rough month for this president. You mentioned some of the fights the president has been picking on twitter, in person with some of these republican leaders. You got this hurricane now thats swept through texas and louisiana, changed the landscape there and seems to be changing some of the landscape in washington when it comes to some bipartisanship for relief money, et cetera. Do you see that having an impact on some of the fights coming up in september at awe . I do a little bit. Charlottesville actually changed the bipartisan nature of congress too. I think youre going to see Congress Work across party lines on a handful of issues, whether the white house is involved or not. I do think harvey considering that there are so many Texas Republicans in leadership positions in congress, both in the house and in the senate, i do think it should smooth things for the debt ceiling that you wont see a ridiculous fight over that. It should smooth things for getting the government funded before the end of the month. I think on that front temporarily but halley, lets be realistic. Every time we think we have one of these moments where well have bipartisanship and maybe the political rhetoric will cool, it lasts literally for moments. And then we move on. I think september theyll get past these rough things but hell be right back to the brinksmanship type politics by the end of the year. Watching it all from washington, chuck todd. Thank you very much. Be sure to watch meet the press today as the city tries to recovery after harvey. Dylan is here now with a check of the weather. This other powerful hurricane, it could be taking aim at us this weekend. Next weekend it is still very far away. Its worth watching at this point. Ill get to that in just a second. Harvey is now finally moving away. Were starting off with heavier pockets of rain in new york city and Northern New England will see the heaviest of the rain and finally will get harvey out of here. We are going to see some improvements there. The heat out west, we have temperatures that are most likely going to break records today. Well top at well above 100 degrees and were going to see more humidity around. That should help with the fire danger. Here is irma. Even though she is very far away it is forecast to develop into a category 4 hurricane as early as wednesday morning and then its going to make its way toward the bahamas and theres a possibility that it could effect the southeastern part of the United States depending on how the steering current drive this thing. Its far away but still a very powerful storm and there are indications we could see some impacts in the u. S. Were going to see. We are waking up to some very warm temperatures, specially for the south bay at this hour. 83 degrees. 82 for the peninsula. Trivalley, 75. East bay, 73. Nice and mild in San Francisco at 71. North bay at 64. We do have a little bit of cooling going on. Not so much for inland areas. We are still expecting a climb into the triple digit heat. It looks like we may get some slight relief along the coast. And thats your latest forecast. Thank you very much. Stick around were looking at the highs of the week. Thats right. No lows, just Holiday Weekend high including the teacher with a very unique way of teaching her students about geography. Plus one dads incredible reaction whether he found out whether his new baby say boy or girl. Since it has been a tough one in the week of Hurricane Harvey, we thought lets go with highs today. No lows allowed. Cool . I like that idea. Lets get into it. First high belongs to a large man with an even larger heart. Check him out. J. J. Watt, the all pro defensive end for the houston texans. Ferocious on the football field, but a total softy when it comes to helping others. He is especially dedicated to cheering up kids in the hospital. After harvey hit his adopted city, he set out to raise 200,000 to help storm victims. 200,000, thats a lot of money. Lets say he succeeded and then some. Do you know what the total is now . More than 17 million. I said it so many times before, but i think the worst times bring out the best in people, and were seeing that in abundance right now. J. J. And his teammates are going directly into the community to help. Right now, he is trying to figure out how the money can be best used for people in houston, beaumont, and the entire area. Dylan, 17 million. This is one of my favorite stories to follow. Every morning i wake up, whats the total to. His videos are so heart felt, i feel like it pulled in a lot of people to help out. He is speaking of folks, neighbors helping neighbors and strangers helping strangers. Next high belongs to teachers nationwide back to the school year or getting ready for it, going the extra mile in the classroom to make learning fun. Those teachers are everywhere. This morning, we want to show you one in particular, dropping some knowledge in a beat. Turn up the temperature like were in africa. I just give you the data. Thats teacher erica buddington, rapping about the earth and its continents. The school is the capital Harlem Charter school founded by shawn ditty combs. Those kids will remember that forever. I am in my 30s, i remember songs my teacher taught about states and president s. I do, too. I have a few in my head, but ill spare you. Thank you for that. Next from noting hill in london. You think of that movie and Julia Roberts saying im a girl standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her. What we have here instead is a Police Officer standing in front of a crowd, asking them to love his dance moves, getting egged on by the dj. Definitely not a stiff legged Police Officer that you might think of. Dudes got moves. Especially hot with all that stuff on. He has the vest and the hat. The whole nine yards. Thats amazing. Wish i could dance like that. And in honor of willie hanging with his kids, a different dads reaction when he got a big shock in the delivery room. Eric and his wife were at the hospital, ready to welcome their fourth child into the world. They already have three girls, both sides of the family have had 20 girls in the last nine years. They hoped for another girl, even picked out a name for her. Then this happened. Its a boy yeah yes finally its a boy oh my god are you sure . Yes, they were sure. And by the way, eric says he has always loved his daughters more than anything. He didnt know he wanted a boy so badly as well until like that moment. Think he will be a little spoiled . I think for sure. I dont know if your husband had that reaction with calvin there. No, it wasnt that intense. Because you knew. We knew we were having a boy. Takes the surprise out of it. Thank you so much. Coming up next, were taking a look at Julia Louisdreyfus on the comedy career that started on a saturday night live stage, has taken her to seinfeld and veep. And the everyday heroes that hopped in to help with harvey. Hopped in to help with harvey. Head over to facebook where the heart beats warm and true, thats texas. Where we always welcome you, thats texas. Hopped in to help with harvey. Head over to facebook where we always find a way, thats texas. [phi anne. Its how edward jones makes sense of investing. Supercool notebooks, done. Thats mom taking care of business. And with the 25 cent event, Office Depot Officemax takes care of mom now, all this just 25 cents each taking care of business jose vicky 2shot i m vicky nguyen. Along side vianey arana good sunday morning. It is september 3rd. We want to start you out with a look at hazy san jose. Good morning. Im vicky nguyen. Vianey arana is standing by with a check of the micro climate forecast. We are under a weather alert. We are. We may get some relief along the coast for today. I did mention that yesterday. Take a look at the temperatures right now. In the south bay, already at 83 degrees. We are actually a lot warmer than we were yesterday when we started out the day. In the peninsula, 82 degrees, trivalley at 75. San francisco, 71. East bay, 73. North bay, 64. The National Weather service has downgraded some locations from a heat warning to a heat advisory. Mainly for the coast and the inner bay. Thats because the highs will be inching closer to the 80s, possibly upper 80s and 90s in some areas. Not as hot as what we would see, slightly cooler. We have a chance of seeing that. These areas still remain under excessive heat warning includes the hills. We will talk about your monday forecast, rain chances. You are kidding. Looking forward to it. Just about the entire bay yar has fe area has felt the effects of the recordbreaking heat wave. San francisco, no exception. Kids cooled off under sprays of water. It was one of the citys designated cooling stations. Admission was free. This was a scene at delores park. A second day of triple digit temperatures kept a lot of people away. This is great video. People who brave the extreme heat ended up clustered on to the shade leaving most of the rest of the park wide open. Were you expecting delores to be really packed . It is a really nice day and nice weather. It is like not. Everybody is just in there on claves of shade right now. The heat affected just about everything. Light rail service on union metro was slowed down for part of the day because of heatrelated equipment issues. B. A. R. T. Slowed its trains systemwide. Engineers were concerned the rails could warp in triple digit temperatures. The heat brought a lot of people out to San Franciscos ocean beach and it drew a lot of people into the ocean. It can be dangerous for those that are not used to the surf and the rip currents that the ocean beach are known for. Firefighters rushed a man to the hospital after he was found unconscious. He is expected to be okay. The crowd at ocean beach was about four times what it normally is. A great way to keep track of this heat. Download our free nbc bay area app. It is an specially great resource right now. People are hoping for a break from the heat. Download it and you can get the forecast for your community. Coming up at 7 00 on today in the bay, bringing down the old bridge. A delicate operation on the bay this weekend. We will have that plus all of your top news stories and vianey back as we look at the rest of the week. For now, back to the today show. Well see you back here at 7 00. If you ask a seinfeld fan about their favorite moments s from the show, you know elaines dance moves are at the top of the list. It is moves like that that made Julia Louisdreyfus a household name. Got a first big break as a cast member on saturday night live. Might have missed her with eddie murphy, billy crystal, martin short. She wasnt in the shadows for long. She rocketed to stardom on seinfeld, one of the most successful sitcoms in history. Has show is still going strong in reruns today. Now she stars in one of the hbo series everybody is talking about, veep, which finished a six season not long ago. She sat down earlier this year at yankee tavern in south bronx where she was shooting an episode of veep. Julia, great to be back in our hang out. Yeah, it is nice. Never seen it this empty. So many great nights together. Memories, and like blackout periods, but we dont have to go down there. Julia louisdreyfus just feels like an old friend, from saturday night live to seinfeld to veep, shes been in our lives, making us laugh for a generation. Julia first was discovered in 1982, a junior at northwestern university, she was performing improv with soon to be husband brad hall. One night, saturday night live producer dick eversol was in the audience. It was like one of those horny movies, we saw you perform, do you want to be on snl. Were like hmm, yeah. Was that even on your radar at that point . No, i didnt even know they were the theater. Thank god i didnt know. I would have totally screwed up. At 21, julia became snls youngest cast member. Many of the first homesteaders were women. Wasnt what i hoped it would be. Oh mary, you always make me laugh. Off stage. It was a pretty dog eat dog world, lot of drugs, wasnt female friendly. I was dumb and green. I didnt realize it was so druggy, all these sketches would come in, 18 pages long, writers going h ha, ha. And then larry david came in. He was as miserable as i was. We kind of bonded. Writer producer larry david and comedian Jerry Seinfeld created a pilot for a show about nothing. The feedback on the pilot people dont realize wasnt good. Didnt test well, i dont really know. Theres a famous line in that that jerry and larry has in their homes, no segment of the audience wanted to see the show again. Julias character was added after that reaction to the pilot. Seinfeld as you may have heard ran for nine seasons, leaving at number one as one of the most iconic shows in television history. Elaine, this is my aunt stella. Stella did you feel it turn at some point along the run and say this is a different show now and we are growing the audience. I felt when they put us on thursday nights, prior to that we had a crappy time slot. All of a sudden our audience was growing and growing. I think of it as this incredibly exciting time of my life, it was a really, really good gig. So where do you go from seinfeld . Eventually she went to another hit, the new adventures of old christine. Then in 2012, another starring role and another big hit. Theyre calling you the no bs vp. Damn right they are. On the hbo show veep, she plays egotistical foul mouthed selena meyer. A politician that wants nothing more than to stay in office, any office. There are no votes in space, theres nothing there. What exactly is selena meyer doing in south bronx now . Shes very focused on her post president ial legacy, shes very much still considers herself relevant as post president ial persona. You have been Vice President , president. Senator, congressman. President has been taken away from you. Yes. The president called . Did the president call . Sue, did the president call . No. Why do you think the show has clicked with people. I think people are always interested in sort of the idea of showing whats in front of the camera so to speak and then behind the curtain, whats really going on. I think thats the appeal. To understand what it takes to be the countrys number two, she met with Vice President s al gore and joe biden. Both Hillary Clinton and Late Supreme CourtJustice Scalia are counted among the shows many fans in washington. Im going to call that stupid potus myself. You went off the air june last year, would have been safe for a reasonable person to assume that Hillary Clinton would be the next president of the United States. Yes. She did not become the next president of the United States. She didnt . Wait, what happened. Check your phone. I have got to get on social media. How did that suddenly change the way you thought about this show . For a minute it sort of rocked our world, i will say on election day because we all did in fact think it was going to go a certain way, but we have two great things going for us on this show. One, we never identified parties. Selena is neither republican or democrat. We have a lot of people from both sides of the aisle that dig this show. All think were making fun of the other guys. Im proud to be here for. National volunteer week. National volunteer week. All the late night shows are taking on donald trump. Do you feel you have to have some voice in that conversation . Not on our show. Our goal is of course to be funny, but we are not satirizing current politics directly. You personally have been outspoken about donald trump. Gave a speech at the sag awards. Im an american patriot, and i love this country. And because i love this country i am horrified by its blemishes. And this immigrant ban is a blemish and it is unamerican. Im a concerned citizen, this ban had just come down and i felt very strongly about it, so i thought i would say what i did. I will destroy you in ways that are so creative, they will honor me for it at the kennedy center. Whats the next mountain to climb for you . Is there something you havent done and want to do . I would like to relax. Youre not good at that. No. I would like to chill out for a period of time. This show is tons and tons of fun to do, its very work intensive. All of that i love, but i think i need a little chill out time. But i want to keep working. So if there are other jobs out there, ill take them. You quickly add that. Theres only so much calm i can take. By the way, julia told willie the Democratic Party reached out to her about running for office in real life. Her answer not in a million years. To see her talk about her comedy heroes and women like tina fey and amy poehler who look up to her, check out web extras at today. Com sunday. Next week, mindy kaling is here, opens up for first time about being pregnant and what kind of mom she will be, all as she gets ready for her hit show the mindy project. Thats next week on sunday today. Dylan is back with a final check of the weather. This week, things take a turn in the southeast. Out west, it is hot. We are going to see sunshine return in the northeast. As we get to middle of the week, well see scattered showers and storms on the east coast. We will see pockets of heavy rain. Heat wave continues out west, dry in the middle of the country. By end of the week, we have to keep a close eye on irma, major hurricane. We have to see if it will have impacts on the southeast. Otherwise, by end of the week, it will cool down out and thats your latest forecast. Thanks very much. Next, tom brokaw heads to small town wyoming to see how people on all sides of the Health Care Debate are dealing with it in real life. Maria is an incredible mom. Next next when Congress Heads back to work this week, one thing they wont be talking about is health care. The attempt to repeal obamacare fell flat when the bill died on the senate floor. But the debate over all this is anything but dead, and it is not just about politics, its personal. Tom brokaw went to wyoming to see firsthand the reality of dealing with medical care on main street america. Reporter howell, wyoming is a classic small town in can do country, the american west. Border to border, wyoming is republican territory. Trump won by almost 70 . Cowboy tough. But even cowboys need health care and in howell, that means two choices. A new subscription service, 307 health, or for a monthly fee, you have instant access to a physician for basic needs. This model of care says look, were going back to it is me and my patient in the room. Reporter across town, Powell Valley health care hospital, 25 beds, a small medical staff, and economic pressure, big pressures. Some of those pressures are the result of obamacare requirements. Wyoming now has only one insurance provider for obamacare. And about 20 of hospital patients are on medicaid. It would be higher, except in the rugged west many of those eligible would rather take chances, instead of government aid. Theres no amount of money that we can spend thats going to make everybody have perfect health. Reporter dr. Reed is a local surgeon, wyoming native, the kind of citizen any town would be proud to have. His family home schools two children and theyve adopted a child with Cerebral Palsy from haiti. He just wants to help people and raise his family as strong christians. If you could reinvent the American Health care system overnight, what would you do . I think getting people to be responsible for day to day decisions that they make, our health is a gift. What we have to do is steward that gift and steward it well. Mind if i listen to your heart and lungs . Have at it. Reporter sarah durn ee brings the same to her job at the clinic. Shes is not happy there are no women on the Senate Republican team trying to change health care. Were at work and were at home and do we really have time to become politically active and involved . Probably not as much as we should be. Reporter in washington, the blame game for health care muddles on with no early resolution in sight. In towns like powell, wyoming, all across america, health care is an everyday urgent concern for citizens, employers, care givers, health care for them is not a gotcha game, it is life and death. Tom brokaw reporting from powell, wyoming. Next up on sunday today, dylan has a look at the everyday heroes among us who jumped in to help in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
