We have breaking news for you in newark, new jersey, the firefighters are battling a massive fire that started in an abandon building before spread ing to other buildings. Cars were burned, and two firefighters were injured. One slip ared on ice, and another had to be helped from the scene. Frozen conditions are making it difficult for the crews. They say they have limited access to water. A man accused in the pier 39 terror plot is set to be arraigned today. The general Attorneys Office released the indictment including a bomb charge. He had planned to funnel people into pier 39 on Christmas Day so he could shoot them. He was arrested after talking about his plans to undercover agents. And jail guards who beat a santa clara inmate to death is to be sentenced today. Jurors convicted the three men on seconddegree murder chargs s in the death of michael tyree. Tyree died in his cell in 2015 at the countys main jail. His death sparked massive reform at the santa claras prison system, and each of the guards faces 15 years to life in prison. And new this morning, cleanup is reportedly expected to ramp up over to the coming weeks from the last years deadly fires. Officials say that than fox the federal contract from the burlingame removal company, they may be able to remove the debris in two months. And now some companies are backing away from offering insurance to some in fire prone areas. We will have hit or miss rain and not raining the whole day, but a better chance as we go into the late morning and early afternoon and some of the spotty showers may briefly produce some heavy rain and gusty winds, continuing for the south bay until later on this evening when the front finally starts to clear the bay area, so we will be tracking the rain and u how much to expect in a few minutes. As we head over to the traffic and what is happening this there in the bay area . Yes, over here, you can see the bay area is looking nice, but we are looking at the big issue along the santa cruz mounta mountains. You can see the Speed Sensors with a road hazard and a downed pole, and the rightofway is closed completely, and it is backed up from the summit to bear creek road. This is going to take a while ark and there is a to work carefully to repov the power lines, and so if this is the commute, you want to head out now, because this is not going to give us an update of time when they are expected to open up the lanes, and right now, one of the lanes is open. The Transportation Leaders are going to be holding a final vote next week, and the hike would roll out in three phases as we have reported in the past provided that the motorists approve it. It would go up one tlar next year and another dollar in 2022 and then in 2025 to cover the bay area bridges except for the golden bay bridge. And new this morning the California State Senate is considering two bills on Net Neutrality. And the measures would require the Internet Service providers to adhere to guidance that were terminated last year. The rules will mean that the companies will legal were illegally required to treat all online traffic equally. And the chair mman of the te site rico says that he is backing out, because of security concerns. Sources say that he had received Death Threats over the Net Neutrality issue, and traditionally the chairman would participate at the worlds large a arest technology conference. We are starting out this morning and everybody is getting ready to the wet friday and it is a warm one, too, as the cold front starts to move in, and here is a look at the rain on the radar and now, most of it has been over San Francisco, and the peninsula, and parts of the north bay and we will start to see the rain working into the south bay later on this morning and check out the sevenday forecast at the bottom of the screen and it is going be cooling down, and we will have for the most part a dry weekend, but we start out with rain this morning. Here is a look at the the temperatures, and still 60 degrees in palo alto, and it is 58 degrees in san jose, and livermore is 49 degrees and chilly there in fairfield and oakland and walking out to 58 degrees and with the highs today only making it up to 60 degrees there, and also in San Francisco, and upper 50s for santa rosa and as the rain takes longer to make it into the south bay, the temperatures will be warmer, and well get a few more of the peaks of sunshine, but it is looking like for the most part the temperatures are going to be gradually warming up as we are looking for the morning commute for the south bay. It is going to be dry at 7 00 and a slight chance of rain at 8 00 and the rain chances are going up as the day goes along so be prepared for at any point some rain could drop. In the main reason why is because it is scattered as we look at what is going to happen as we look at the computer model for the day, and it does show that the rain does start to become a little bit more widespread for the north bay. And by 11 00 this morning raining in San Francisco and along the coast as well as Santa Cruz Mountains, but san jose is dry. We could have light sprinkles and quick passing showers and not expecting any heavy rain and still a chance of showers throughout the evening. So as the models plot the potential of getting low amounts of rain for parts of the east bay, and the south bay, but then the farther north you go, we will see some higher amounts of rain and it may be highest over San Francisco and napa, so watching for that rain to move in, and let me know what you are doing this weekend. Well, a lot of people are looking to make their way into the weekend, and so far, everybodys morning commute is off to the easy start except for the folks dealing with the Santa Cruz Mountain highway and 17 usually has a couple of issue, but one thing that is happening, it backs up, a road hazard that is being reported that is a downed tree that knocked down a downed pole, and now along i17, the road is closed, but the good news is that the crews are there to clear it out, and the hazards there to see the slowing up towards bear creek road. We will keep an eye on it, because if you go through the Santa Cruz Mountain, and you know how messy and horrible that drive can be. And live look in san jose along 101 and we can see that the traffic is building and the south bay has managed to maintain some pretty decent clear roads this morning. Back to you. All right. It is friday morning, but we are starting to see a couple of incidents out there on the road, and it is because we are starting to see more of the buildup in this 5 30 hour. Overall, everybody is okay with the exception along the Santa Cruz Mountains, and monitoring the road hazard blocking the lanes from summons road to bear creek. But a quick update on the bridge drive times. Westbound 80, nine minutes of the bay. And 12 on the san mateo bridge on westbound 92, and still no metering lights on at the the bay bridge. 5 31 right now, and happening today, the sentenceing in the kate steinle murder case. Yes, the man who was acquitted of her killing, but he was still convicted on a firearm charge. We have a look at what happens today with pete. Pete . Yes, good morning. The legal drama continues in the kate steinle case with that sentencing hearing taking place in the hall of justice here in San Francisco. The big question today is whether a new trial is going to be granted from the judge when it comes to the weapons possession conviction. Garcia was acquitted in the 2019 shooting death of kate steinle at pier 14 with the jury deciding he was not guilty of murder and manslaughter charges, but they dispute that he had possession of the firearm, and they claim that the jury was not informed about the transitory weapon, and that he held it briefly, but not long enough to call it possession. A retrial would be bogus says the prosecution, and regarding this ruling the last week. The judge is likely that the weapon weapons possession conviction will stay unchanged, but they expect the arguments of the jur are ri instrjury instructions to continue. I think that there was an instructional error to the jury, and if a new trial is not granted, this is a strong groundwork for an appeal. And the sentencing hearing is set to take place at 9 00 a. M. Now, police are looking for this man in the surveillance and they believe he has been arrested. We have been telling you about that assault and robbery at Harker Middle School academy. We will have more on that hearing at a noon. And today, you have heard about fire and fury because the white house has been railing against the book all week. We have been checking on stores who were not expecting high demand, but now book, inc. In palo alto said that the phone is ringing off tof the hook. They only ordered 15 copies and people have paid for them. Few people have placed special orders in person, and i bet you that person on the phone is calling about this book. High demand. And mos books in berkeley only ordered four copies, but she will be ordering others if there is a demand. This book portrays the president as ill equipped to be a president touched off a firestorm in washington. And awe tis are looking for two men they belief are tied to a fire inside of a east bay business. This is the surveillance image of the two men they are looking for. They said that somebody set a fire on purpose inside of the bathroom on purpose in union city. It happened two days before christmas, and that business is on nilz and alvarado road. Those suspects may be brothers. And now, flu is in full swing across california and Bay Area Medical Center s as are ta extra precautions. The numbers are showing that the influenza numbers are spiking unusually early this season. There have been four flurelated deaths already this year. And to prevent spreading the flu, visitors will be restricted to anyone under 16. And now this includes escondido hospital in california where special tents will be used. In early october, we start planning with supplies, staffing that we would need, and doing a mock setup of the tent, and making sure that we are ready in case we have to use this. This year, we did have to the use it. Across the state, there have been 17 people under the age of 65 who have died from flu this season. Happening today, the california Highway Patrol is going to welcome its newest officers and all 108 cadets will be sworn in this morning at a Graduation Ceremony in sacramento. They have wrapped up 28 weeks of intense training and they will serve divisions all across the state. And now, Traffic Control is where i get my information from, and so i will be talking to the graduates soon. And so, now sh, the only issue the bay area that i have been monitoring is along the Santa Cruz Mountains, the road hazard and a downed tree and pole with powerlines and they have the ride lane closed along 17 at idle wild. And we are seeing the delays there with the road hazard, but they are actively working to clear it out, and as soon as they do, they will have an update of what happened with the downed tree, because they did not report exactly what went down, but they are on the scene. And now, looking outside at the traffic maps 880 is typically the busiest highway even on a friday morning and proving true. It is still not busy. L lets move on to the next camera. Look at that. And close eye on that one. Yes, i think that some folks as kari said, a short week, and so to take the whole week off. Yes, taking off today as well. So as you are laying in bed and relaxing, making the plans for the weekend, it is going to be a nice one. The rain are we are seeing right now is clearing out and by tomorrow, a few clouds are still in the mix, and cooler temperatures and breezy winds along the coast. It is 55 degrees and the bay is 59 and the inland 60 degrees and then sunday, mid50s as well, and fairly dry weekend, and if you are headed to santa cruz, highs of 62. And 60 on sunday. In napa valley, the highs in the 60s with mostly sunny skies and a nice weekend to go tasting the wine at the vineyards. Going down to santa barbara, it is going to be warmer tomorrow, and that is the best day up to 70 degree, and 65 degrees on sunday. As we get a live look outside in squaw valley, still some light showers and seeing it changing over to light snow by saturday morning, and then as you are ready to come back home, it will be in the upper 40s and the rain and snow will have cleared. The woman had been out drinking with friends and picked up in the Early Morning hours. That driver is being held without bond. People in one north bay neighborhood are in shock after police say that a man went into a home and sexually assaulted an 8yearold girl as she was sleeping. Police at rohnert park say that noah holland took a garage door opener from an unlocked car, and then went into the bedroom of a young girls asleep and took the off of his clothes and sexually assaulted her. The neighbors are shocked. And the kids are running around on the scooters and the bikes, bikes, and so we would not expect that, but people are sick. A crucial clue helped officers to track down the suspect. The girls screams alerted the mother, and the suspect fled w but he left behind his personal belongings. This morning, the Concord Police are asking for your help to identify this woman. They say that Martha Javier and also known as gabby javier is tied to a murder and arson investigation. They say she intentionally set fire to a mobile homea and man there was injure and in Critical Condition still. A Health Warning about lettuce is making headlines. It could be weeks before they could pinpoint the outbreak of e. Coli. They believe that romaine lettuce is to blame. 60 people in the u. S. And canada have been sickened by the e. Coli and three of them in california. A person in each country has died. An investigation is underway right here in the United States. And it is going to start out this morning where you need to make sure that you prepared for it all even though it is feeling nice and mild, the wind kicking up today and times of rain pazzing through the bay aer rea lets get a close look of what is happening here, and the south bay and the east bay is dry, and we are starting to see the rain moving through the north bay and approaching San Francisco. We will start to see the showers moving back into the city by about 6 19 so you will have another 30 minutes orrer so before the rain starts to come down in San Francisco and this then move across the bay to oakland with the showers moving off to the north and east. You have a little bit while longer in oakland if you are ready to head out the door. The temperatures in the low 60s and most of rus close to that already, and once the cold front starts to sweep through later today, and things start to get cooler, and as you are getting dressed the this morning, and you have the rain gear, and the rain boots and the rain jacket or the umbrella and something to help keep you dry, because even though you not seeing the showers right now, you dont want to be caught out there unprepared. And now, as we are looking at the radar now, seeing the heavier showers to the well north of us this is a weak system and it is going to bring some additional light rainfall totals on top of what we have had with the highest chances of rain on the north bay, but whatever we start to see the heavier pockets of rain setting up this afternoon, we will see at 2 30, the rain moving through the east bay and north bay and the peninsula. San jose is dry for most of the day until later on this evening where there is a quick round of showers passing through as the cold front passes. As we go into the weekend, we will have dry condition, and then take you to monday where the next storm system is going to be moving in, and this is much more significant and heavier rain fall in the forecast. This is going to be happening, too, with tropical moisture to boost the rainfall totals, and so we will have more rain in the forecast this week, and we need it, because we will be keeping up with the rainfall deficit. Looking at the temperatures in the mid50s in San Francisco and a nice way to get out there to enjoy before the next round of rain moves in. And inland expect low 60s and we will tell you what to expect coming up in the next couple of days. But as we are heading over to vianey, we are seeing some slow spots in the bay area. Some slow spots indeed. As kari has been mentioning the rain, it is just slow it down a little bit. In california, we are not used to driveing in the crazy rain, but we have a u couple of systems coming in, and overall, the bay area traffic maps is showing the issue in the Santa Cruz Mountains with the downed power line on summit road. They are actively working the clear it out, and i am waiting for the update in a little bit and as soon as it comes in, i will give it to you. Westbound 101, 13, and northbound 87 from highway 85, only 10 minute, and on northbound 17 before the road hazard, it is not bad at a 8 minute, and if you are take a live look at south bay in san jose, we have more people hitting the road, but it is a fairly friday Morning Light commute and over to you. Good morning, chris and marcus, and today is the competition for the women at the sap center, and in 24 hours, the Skating Committee will announce which ladies are chosen to represent the United States in south korea. We have jackie wong a fomer figure skater himself and a reporter for rockford skating, and looking at the local athletes, and of the two women, you think that one still has a chance some yes, karen chen has a dance and paulina has a chance after making the olympics four years ago, but if you are looking at the short program, it is coming down the karen chen. That is this afternoon. As a former figure skater yourself, can you tell me what maybe what kind of pressure is on her to perform, and especially in a sport like this where they are expecting perfection . Well, it is not her first rodeo, and she is the National Champion from last year, and she knows what it is like to be under this pressure, and so, when, you have trained all of your life for a couple of minutes on the ice, it is, you know, you get used to it, and, you know, she generally has a very good head on her shoulders ash wend will see how it goes. Are and the usa skating is based on points and not much in the way offal politics in t temings of who is going to go to pyeongchang . Well, the u. S. Figure skating has a list of criteria they go on, and the u. S. Figure skating championship is a huge part of that. And so barring something a little bit crazy, the top three are probably going to go. And on sunday morning, we will be hearing about the men who will be chosen and vincent cho of palo alto and what do you see about him . He has a great chance. In the short program, he made a couple of kind of one major error, but a u couple of minor errors that you would not see unless you were looking at the replay, and those are things that he can fix, and if he does that, he has got some of the hardest technical content in the world, and this is how he is going to make it. Does he have a reputation to be able to perform under that kind of pressure . Yes, he won the silver, and the world junior champion last year, and that is a lot of the big credentials. And nathan chen is expected to be the best hope for gold, and he is known for flawlessly executing the quads, a swroend seen it, and we were talking off camera, but will there be quints in the sport . Maybe at some point. But right now, at this point, the technical boundaries are really, really getting to the limits at this point. You know, i think that there is some change in technique if quints will ever happen. Er for people who are new to figure skating like myself who have only seen it on tv, but who would come here to sap Center Tonight or tomorrow or sunday, and what do you think that youd want them to look for or maybe something that is not obvious to get a better appreciation of the sport . Yes, a lot of people talk about the jumps, because that is what you see, and that is the difficult stuff. It is really for me looking at in betweens is really important at the speed and the power and the sound of the blade that they make, and that they make on the ice, and those are the things that the judges are looking for and the intangibles, and really, it is the skaters who are going to be bringing the crowd to their feet are the ones who are going to be the ones who can really project to the audience and make us feel something. And you know, the audience wont be looking for that. They will sense it. And quickly, do you get nervous watching as a former competitor . All of the time. All of the time. You cannot not.
