We have all of the olympic highlights coming up in a bit. Well start with the news. The top story, the fallout from the president s twitter tirade over the weekend, ripping everyone except for russia in the wake of stunning, new indictments tied to election meddling. Weve got two reports now and well start at the white house with nbcs kristen welker. Kristen, good morning to you. Reporter good morning to you. The president is pointing the finger of blame at just about everyone except Vladimir Putin and moscow, after special Counsel Robert Mueller indicted 13 russian officials and 3 businesses last week. The kremlin this morning is calling the allegations unfair and baseless. And now a number of the president s critics are accusing mr. Trump of failing to stand up to russia. This morning, new signs the president s frustrations with the russia probe are boiling over, after special Counsel Robert Mueller charged 13 russians with engineering a massive social media and Field Operations campaign aimed at meddling in the 2016 election. Over the weekend, the president played the blame game, lashing out in a tweet storm, to president obama. For doing nothing to thwart russia. And at the fbi, for missing signals sent out by the Florida School shooting. Accusing the agency of spending too much time trying to prove russian collusion with the Trump Campaign. There is no collusion, he wrote. And in one stunning tweet, the president writing, they are laughing their asses off in moscow. Get smart, america. The president s critics slamming him for not calling out the interference itself. I think this indictment is not only indictment of the russian figures involved, its also an indictment of the inaction of this administration. Reporter even most republicans acknowledging the enormity of indictment. What this indictment has told us is what weve known all along, russia is not our friend. This is his job. This is what we wanted him to do. Reporter all weekend, the president was on defense, denying he ever absolved russia of meddling in the election. The russian hopes is that the Trump Campaign colluded with russia, it never did. But the president has frequently cast doubt on whether russia meddled. I believe that president putin really feels and he feels strongly, that he did not meddle in our election. That was a democrat hoax. It was an excuse for losing the election. Reporter the president undercutting his National Security adviser, after h. R. Mcmaster said on saturday as you can see with the fbi indictment, the evidence is now really incontrovertible and available in the public domain. Reporter the president firing back. General mcmaster forgot to say that the results of the 2016 election were not impacted or changed by the russians. While its true the indictment does not say that russia changed the outcome of the election, american intelligence officials have said they have no way of calculating the effect of the interference. Now, the president was up and tweeting overnight, not about the russia probe, but about oprah. Almost baiting her to challenge him in 2020. Tweeting, just watched a very insecure Oprah Winfrey, who at one point i knew very well, interviewed a panel on 60 minutes. The panel was slanted and biased. The facts incorrect. Hope oprah runs so she can be exposed and defeated just like the others. Theres been speculation about whether Oprah Winfrey would run for president after she gave that impassioned speech at the golden globes. But oprah said she is not interested. As for the president , he returns from maralago later today. Savannah . Kristen, back to russias attack on the u. S. Is the Trump Administration planning to do anything about it . Reporter thats the key question. So far, the president has shown little appetite for retaliating against russia. Mr. Trump didnt mention anything about retribution or next steps in his tweet storm over the weekend as we saw. And for context, congress has passed sanctions against russia, savannah, for interfering in the election, but so far the Trump Administration hasnt actually imposed them. The only robust sanctions that have been implemented against russia was under president obama. Now secretary of state Rex Tillerson did say over night that the administration is evaluating possible sanctions for individuals, still Many Democrats and some republicans say this Administration Just isnt being tough enough against russia. The critics say, the root of the problem is that the president takes personally the issue of russian meddling. He sees it as a tool that democrats are trying to delegitimize his victory. And that, critics charge, may be clouding his judgment. Savannah . Kristen welker, thank you. The president s words are adding fuel to a growing call of action from survivors of the Florida School shooting. Whats different in the aftermath of this shooting is that were hearing a very loud voice from student survivors. Reporter teenagers born after the 1999 columbine shooting the heart is in this movement reporter calling on tougher gun laws and a march on washington. His neighbor said he smashed golf balls into his car. He was a nice kid when he was nice. Until he would lose his temper. Then, he would just be crazy for a little while. Reporter a 2016 state report obtained by nbc news, Mental Health counselors found that cruz was depressed and cut himself. Mr. Cruz stated he plans to go out and buy a gun the report found. It is unknown what he is buying the gun for. His mother told counselors he suffered from adhd and his outism and that his behavior stemmed from a recent breakup. Cruz had drawn religious epithets on his school backpack. Since cruz resides with his mother and receives inhome Mental Health services, no other referrals or services were needed. Do you think the state should have done more . We have different agencies. I think doing the best job that we can, but its being done in individual silos. Reporter after cruzs mother died in november, he went to live with james and kimberly snead. Kimberly told the south florida sun sentinel we had this monster living under our roof and we didnt know. We didnt see this side of him. Now, parkland is grieving for the 17 victims. Over the weekend, six funerals, and today two more. It will be a week of mourning and determination. We dont want thoughts and prayers. We dont want it. We want action. We want gun control. We want our kids to be safe. This is unacceptable. S. Team, behind Zachary Donohue and Madison Hubbell. Who placed third after the first two rounds of competition. Madison hubbell and Zachary Donohue made a big statement on olympic ice. It was an emotional day for me, trying to let in the gratitude of being here and also be strong. Reporter another american duo, evan bates and Madison Chock skating their way into seventh place. These two project to the rafters. They always perform for the top of the arena. This short dance is no exception. Reporter from the rink to the mountaintop, where big air snowboarding is making its debut here at the pyeongchang games. Can i just tell you, the level of riding right now in this qualifying event for womens big air, it is just pushing the level. Reporter after two qualifying runs, jamie anderson, julia marino, and jessika jenson, pushing into the top 12, pushing their limits, guaranteeing them a spot in the finals later this week. Is far behind several other countries in the overall medal count, the u. S. Olympic committee telling nbc in a statement, theyre proud of team usas accomplishments so far and are, quote, excited to see what happens in the second week as we continue to provide athletes everything they need to be successful. As for the medal count this morning, norway still leading on a record pace, by the way, for overall medals at the Winter Olympics. Team usa stands in sixth place overall. Theres plenty of live action on nbc tonight from pyeongchang, including the finals of ice dancing, the twomen bobsled and the womens halfpipe in freestyle skate. Craig, thank you so much. Heading into these games, one of the big storylines was the doping scandal that led to russias ban. But the ioc allowed some russian athletes to compete. And now one of them, a medal winner, in fact, has reportedly failed a doping test. Nbcs Stephanie Gosk has the latest on all that. Reporter good morning. When you think of doping, you dont think about curling as a sport that comes to mind. This morning, its at the center of a brewing scandal and so are the russians. Married russian couple alexander and anastasia pulled off a miracle third place finish in mixed curling. After the competition, they said they were proud to have won russias first medal in the sport. Celebrating at the team house, the couple were greeted as heroes, signing autographs for fans. But all of that came crashing down. Today the organization that investigating doping confirmed he is the focus of a new case. He tested for a new drug that can boost stamina, according to the new york times. The sample will be tested twice to be certain. The Russian Curling Federation told the a. P. That he tested clean as early as january 22nd and that someone, perhaps a rival on his own team, may have spiked his food during training camp. The International Olympic committee had suspended the russian team from these games after finding it guilty of systemic doping. Those allowed to compete are referred to as the olympic athletes from russia. We caught up with Matt Hamilton from the u. S. Team, who beat the russians in a match during mixed curling competition. How does doping potentially give you an edge in curling . Um, so, if youre strong and have endurance, you can sweep longer and harder. You have more margin for error when shooting. Better sweepers you have, the bigger window you have to miss. Reporter hamilton and his sister finished seventh overall. Its a little different than like crosscountry or something where youre going full bore. All the time. Theres more finesse and you dont always need your brute strength. It stinks. It was a great start to the ice dancing competition for team usa, with three teams in the top seven heading into tonights finals. And we were there. Overnight, team usa was back on the ice, showing off style and grace. All three pairs of ice dancers turning in some showstopping performances. Led by u. S. National champions, Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue. They are currently in medal contention following the Short Program. You looked like you were having fun. Is that whats going on out there . Thats what i told her. Just have fun. Reporter evan bates and Madison Chock also dazzling the crowd. I cannot stress enough how proud i am for you skating like that. Then we saw ice dance live. We were impressed. We thought it would be fun to give it a try together. Weve gotten along well together. We have a pretty good relationship. It was natural. Reporter but the u. S. Is facing stiff competition from tessa virtue and scott moir. They had a jawdropping performance. The ice dancing competition, not known for its controversial, has had a fair share of its moments. Back home in the u. S. , viewers noticed the song despacito was used by three different teams. Here comes another despacito. Reporter the song, lighting up social media. And frances dance team suffered an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction during their skate. A problem with the costume. We have a region thats developing that were going to see storm after storm after storm into next week. Unrelenting rain. The flood threat corridor off of the eastern seaboard pumps up moisture northward and blocks the storms from making their ware further to the east. You can see, as we go into the week, consecutive storms over the same region, anywhere from three to five, six inches of rain plus melting snow the 8 to 12 inches of rain, from michigan to texas, may cause flooding by sunday. Youve had a rollercoaster olympics . Definitely. The last few days have been an emotional rollercoaster. I hit rockbottom with both Short Programs. The long program was the highest of my high in my competitive career. Its been incredible. Im happy i was able to lay that down here. We were there during your program. And al, savannah and i, i dont know if they were the loudest and most obnoxious people. In case you missed us, i want to give you a taste of what it sounded like. Are you ready . Yep. Woo. Woo. Yes. Yay. That was just before security took us out. I heard you guys. What was so awesome, nathan, first of all, i know you were thinking of doing five quads. You decided at the last second to do six. You didnt talk to your coach. You decided you were going to throw down. Tell us about that process. After the Short Program, i fell so much, i had nothing to lose heading into the long program. And i figured this would be the best opportunity to try Something Like this, something a little crazy. But again, i had nothing to lose. And i wanted to see what i could do, i wanted to test myself. Im glad i chose to do that. Had you done the six quads in practice . You knew you could . I attempted it in practice and it was never successful. This was the most successful it had ever been. Its crazy. Its like go big or go home. When you look at your olympic experience, how would you describe it . It was a rollercoaster. Im so glad i pushed through. I never gave up after that Short Program. Both Short Programs were really awful. To bounce back within 24 hours, im really proud of that. When you think about it, Scott Hamilton was here. He said, you know, nathan showed he actually was human. He watches you. He says you never, never, never mess up. When you look at it now, do you think it was nerves, like all that scrutiny and the spotlight . That did play a role. I was focused on medals. It made me super timid and cautious. Thats not the way to compete. I took all of that weight off of my shoulder and allowed myself to enjoy my experience at the olympics, enjoy my performance for the people. And you guys, i heard you guys, i heard the entire crowd. Every Single Person that sent me a message on instagram or there cheering me on helped so, so much. Are you going to join us in beijing . This weekend, jon lillis twisted and looped his way to nearly winning a medal for the u. S. Thats how you get in the top six, right there. Huge reporter his family, so proud. In the end, he didnt medal. Good there. Reporter just having the strength to be here was a big victory. Jon was 8 when he started jumping. At 14, a coach asked him to move to lake placid. Do we want him at 30 years old think i could have been something . So we figured wed let him try it. Reporter miky and chris followed their big brother into aerials and mom and dad and jamie moved to a smaller house to pay for training. Last fall, three skiers, two going to the olympics. We were sitting pretty. Im michael lillis. Reporter then, one morning last october, jamie realized Middle Brother mikey did not wake up yet. I yelled up to him, and he did not answer, which is unusual. He was a light sleeper. I went up the stairs, and i knew as i hit the landing, something was really wrong, and i need immediately when i went into his room. And then i called 911 and i cal. And i just said, i need you. Reporter mikey died in his sleep. They say they still dont know why. Went from on top of the world to about as bad as you can get. Reporter in his grief, jon kept jumping. When he didnt feel like doing another jump, he would hear his brother say, get up there. Reporter jon made the olympic team and a hash tag was born, jumpingformikey. The rochester community, rallying to support the family. During the olympics, jon wore his brother mikeys jumping suit. Its the closest thing i could have to keep him with me. I think he would have thought it was the coolest thing ever. He was a superfan as well as an athlete. I think all athletes are. If you compete at a high level, you have to love the sport that youre involved in, whatever it may be. But just seeing my brother, chris face and knowing how much fun he was having, i think that mikey would have thought the world of it and being here and seeing everything going on, i think he would have thought it was a cool scene. This happened on east gate lane near highway 4 in martinez. This mornings fire started at about 1 30. Firefighters say it was a result of that same fire reigniting from yesterday. Because that building was already evacuated there were no concerns about injuries. As for the original fire, investigators believe that was caused by someone leaving a pot unattended on the kitchen stove. One firefighter was injured in yesterday mornings fire.
